FEAR AND LOATHING IN DOMESTICATION
pairing: josh kiszka x reader warning(s): mentions of alcohol, references to sex, depression, & anxiety  synopsis: in better terms, josh kiszka is a rolling stone, and when the pandemic causes the band to settle down for an undisclosed amount of time, reader helps josh come out of his slump note: title & reference to that one interview. you know the one. as someone with a fear of domestication as well, i related so hard to josh when he talked about settling down, and this came out of that. it’s just a lil something !! also posted on ao3 if you would like to check it out there instead. hope you all enjoy !! x
Josh was a vagabond, a nomad, living a peripatetic lifestyle of hopping from city to city overnight by bus or jet, bouncing between venues and interviews as if he was born to do so. Staying in three-star motel rooms in the middle of nowhere became a part of his lifestyle, one that he became quite adjusted to after three years on the go. Even while visiting home he was between family and friend houses, checking in on old stomping grounds, visiting studios hours away, anything to stay busy. In the clearest sense of terms, he was a rolling stone.
So, as everyone imagined it would happen, he began to lose his sense of self in 2020. One second the band were planning the release of an album, preparing to hit the road and play stadiums in South America with Metallica in the spring, and then the next they were hit with the news of cancellations and push-backs to everything they had been working towards. With the rise of a pandemic they were forced into a hiatus and into the first real break any of them had received, if they didn’t count the few days visiting home last holiday season.
He and the rest of the band hunkered down in Nashville and Josh started to live in his worst fear - domesticity. He was waking up at the same time every day in the same city, he was living the same life day after day, and it became old very quickly. While catching up on rest and exploring a new city was fun at first, it started to look like every other city before long. The adventure he would wake up to with excitement was no longer around. He had been forced to settle down, and he felt like a trapped animal trying to gnaw its own leg off.
And like the rest of the band and the management team, you hated seeing him that way.
The relationship between you and Josh was short, but you knew Josh for years, and you noticed the differences in his personality immediately once you followed him to Nashville following the shut down of your own job.
You once swung by the studio with a surprise lunch for the boys and the team and he was struggling to write lyrics on a notepad in the other room, surrounded by crumpled and balled sheets of paper. He would stay up later at night scrolling through airline websites for flights out of Nashville to random cities (as long as he was traveling, he told himself), and he shifted through hobbies to find anything that stuck (which eventually was reading and painting) (there was a corner of the living room filled with stacks of books and canvas paintings).
And you tried your best, even when times were hard on you, too. In order to boost Josh’s spirits and get his mind off the persistent idea that he was stuck in time, you attempted baking new treats and made him try them after dinner, you dabbled in bartending and made new drinks with tequila, set up painting dates in the backyard after work, bought books from second-hand stores you thought he would enjoy, and bought new and random vinyl for the nights spent in during summer storms.
But the bright blue, cloudless summer skies and warm breezes rustling the trees of summer became the red of maples and the bronze of oaks of autumn. Everyone hoped things would be different, maybe even just slightly, but nothing had changed at all. The band was still in Nashville, making the best of their time off to expand the album and the universe it was set in, and you were back to working, but only remotely, so Josh insisted you stayed with them instead of traveling back home at seemingly the height of the worst so far.
When the long, hot days turned into cooler mornings and long nights with the sun setting at five p.m., the effect of the year had finally hit everyone. Everyone was tired, they felt defeated.
So in one last desperate attempt to boost spirits and morale, everyone set off on their own adventure and escaped Nashville in the early days of December. Danny was going to Los Angeles, Sam was going skiing in Montana, and you knew that Josh and Jake needed their own trip. So after a few phone calls and exchanged emails over a week, you booked a trip for the twins and their family in Key West. It was something small - a rented RV for the dreaded sixteen-hour drive south, but what awaited them was a week in a rented beach house and days on a boat in the Gulf.
You booked it for everyone, you wanted the boys and their family to let loose and spend some time together before work drove them away again, but you weren’t going to lie and say you didn’t book it with Josh in mind. He was a fan of the beach and islands, history, and the water and sun and sand, and after months hunched over a studio coffee table writing and working endlessly on the album design, he deserved time to himself, to recover, to recoup.
You told him before bed on Thanksgiving day. The Kiszka family had come down from Michigan to celebrate the holiday, and they did with dinner and a fire in the pit in the backyard with music and plaid blankets and smores under the stars. After staying up talking to his mom, Josh had come to bed last with the lingering scent of fire smoke in his hair and Corona on his breath, and he met you under the covers, nestling his face in the crook of your neck before pressing a soft kiss against your skin while wishing you goodnight.
Humming, you rolled over and rolled into him. He chuckled and wrapped an arm around you, and that’s when you, in a sleep-deprived state, began to rattle off all of your plans,
“Tell your parents to stay for another week.” You said, eyes still closed, half-asleep.
Josh paused. “Why?” It wasn’t something he was opposed to, but it caught him by surprise.
“I booked a trip for the rest of us. While Danny and Sam are gone.” You laid your head on his shoulder, pressing a gentle kiss to his chest. “We leave for Key West in four days.”
And the shot of adrenaline that ran through Josh was something he hadn’t felt in quite a long time. The last time he got excited about going anywhere was to a new record shop that opened up a few streets over from the house. He quickly sat up in the bed, looking down at you (now laying sideways) in the dark with a smile.
“You’re fucking joking,”
You laughed and reached out for his hand. “Not at all,” you said bringing his hand up to kiss the palm, “I’m going to pick up an RV in a couple of days, and we can surprise your parents and take them shopping for clothes and everything else we need.”
Out of what seemed like a rush of euphoria, Josh threw himself on top of you, peppering your face with kisses and you laughed at the show of affection and at the tickle of the growing mustache he managed to grow (and pull off). You turned your head, holding his cheeks, and kissed him.
“Now, come on, let’s get some sleep.”
“Well that’s unlikely - now I’m going to lay here and think about all the dumb shit we can do.” He said, sliding under the covers and sliding an arm around you.
You just laughed and nestled your cheek against his chest, listening in to the quiet shuffling in the hallway outside the door of everyone going to bed, to the ticking sound of the clock on the wall, and then to Josh’s voice,
“Do you think they have pirate themed dinner cruises?”
“If they do, I’m sure you’ll find out about it.”
And he did.
(There wasn’t one.)
But you found so much more than you two ever dreamed of. Trading dreary Nashville for a bright and warm island, you welcomed the hot breeze and sun-kissed skin.
And even though there wasn’t a pirate themed dinner cruise, you watched Josh come alive in a new environment. You strolled hand-in-hand with him through the butterfly and nature conservatory, letting him rave about the multicolored birds and point at flowers he thought you would like while capturing them on film. On Duval Street he pulled you to get caricature portraits done, he ordered shots for everyone in the bar after a night spent swimming. He roamed Dry Tortugas National Park with Jake, admiring the view and history within the brick fort walls, and first thing one morning he pulled you out of bed to get breakfast and visit the Ernest Hemingway Home, so you sat with him on a bench in the morning light and drank coffee and pet the roaming cats that passed by.
The last night on the island you woke up naked without Josh beside you, and you turned to see him sitting on the balcony with the white sheer curtains billowing around him, writing in the journal he always kept on his person. A smile tugged on the corners of your lips.
Josh was falling in love with life again.
And you were falling in love with life again, too, because Josh was so passionate about living it.

Taylor Jade Powell
Taylor Jade Powell  came to a “MUSE” w/ Kyle Yearwood back in June and signed up to be a volunteer that same day! Outside of CM she is a writer at a creative advertising agency, enjoys listening to a lot of books, going to the movies, and getting to know the city. Do you have an audio book recommendation for her or a Baltimore gem she should know about?
What do you love about Baltimore's Creative Communities?
Baltimore's creative communities have reignited my passions to create. When your job doesn't always provide that fulfillment, spaces like Creative Mornings help me to fight creative fatigue and burnout. I've met some amazing people and learned some life lessons that will help me in my career. I will never forget the first CM talk I went to and talked to Kyle Yearwood afterword. It just a 10 minute chat, he helped me gain the confidence to pick up the camera I was allowing to collect dust. I became a volunteer that same day.
What are you passionate about?
I'm passionate about people and their stories. With a background in journalism and music production, I like to think of myself as a multimedia storyteller. I think stories can move people. They can rally people behind a cause. They can inspire understanding. They can give a voice to the voiceless. As crazy as it may sound, I think a good story can create real change. So I'm passionate about telling them. I am also passionate about family, mental health, my emotional support animal Chance (second photo), getting Trump out of office, and music.

Steve Cavaselis
Steve joined the CM/Bal team this past Summer. Steve started as many of our volunteers start (including the co-organizers!) by showing up each month as a CreativeMornings attendee and then wanting to get more involved! Now you’ll find him setting up chairs, jenga-ing everything into a car at the end of the event, greeting you with a smile as you arrive, or at @dwatkinsworld talk he was probably trying to take a photo with you holding up the CM/Bal sign!
What do you love about Baltimore's Creative Communities?
The opportunity to experience different types of art in different mediums wherever you look; it's a magical convergence for the senses.

Amanda DiGiondomenico
Amanda has become our resident graphic recorder, creating incredible illustrations of our speaker’s talks. Outside of CM she is a freelance graphic designer & illustrator. She has co-founded Baltimore Letters (@baltimoreletters). Baltimore Letters has regular meetups where they talk, draw, and “generally geek out over lettering.” Peep their IG for upcoming events, and tag #baltimoreletters so they can share your work!
What do you love about Baltimore's Creative Communities?
I love how resilient Baltimore is, and connecting with the city's creative community is an amazing reminder of how vibrant our city is.
What are you passionate about?
I'm passionate about my illustration work, and currently, I'm really into drawing maps, but I also love drawing women and lettering. Even more than that, though, I'm passionate about being an entrepreneur, and I absolutely love talking to other small business owners about how they do it.

Maria Goodson
Maria joined the team back in June. Outside of helping you take your photo in the @pixilated Photo Booth each month, she runs a monthly reading series called Writers & Words (@writersandwords) that features four writers each month, one in fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and the genre-defying “wild card” category which in the past has included a playwright, a scientist, and a children’s book author (and everything in between). The next Writers & Words is Tuesday, December 10th, 7 p.m. at Charmington’s, 2601 Howard St, 21218, featuring Jalynn Harris, Khadijah Z. Ali Coleman, Neda Toloui-Semnani, & Marco Rafalà!
What do you love about Baltimore's Creative Communities?
The people! Baltimore is full of Doers, people who are not just amazing at coming up with great ideas, but who actually go out there and make it happen! I'm constantly inspired by Baltimore's creative communities.
What are you passionate about?
Reading and writing and getting things done. Beyond that, I love nothing more than making cool stuff with other people, and connecting cool people to one another to do the same.

Kate Reed Petty
Kate joined the CM/Bal team in June. Outside of wrangling with the green screen setting for the photo booth each month, she is a writer with her first novel “True Story” debuting next year on August 4! Find it at your favorite local bookstore: http://bit.ly/CMKateBook
What do you love about Baltimore's Creative Communities?
This is such an amazingly supportive place to be a creative person. People in Baltimore show up for each other, and I'm always humbled and inspired—just seeing the energy at Creative Mornings events, it's better than caffeine.
What are you passionate about?
Storytelling!
Tumblr media
Patti Provance
Outside of CM/Bal she builds networks of donors who care about Baltimore and the surrounding counties at the United Way of Central Maryland. Patti is also involved with WoW, Women of the World Festival. The free event centers gender equality and  takes place on Saturday March 7th.
What do you love about Baltimore's Creative Communities?
I love that Baltimore's talent takes so many different forms and I love how people show up for each other.  One of my favorite things about Creative Mornings is coming to see someone talk that I don't know very much about and then seeing all the people who do and are just pouring love on the speaker.  Its really incredible to watch and experience.
What are you passionate about?
Building a better world for and by women and girls, Baltimore, discovering new creative outlets.  Ask me about my garden :)

Sabina Besra
Sabina joined us early this year and has been greeting you as you arrive and getting you checked in each month! Outside of CM/Bal, she is the Graphic Designer at Howard Hughes Medical Institute. She’s always looking for camping buddies to share adventures with. She has her eye on Yellowstone + Grand Teton Early September 2020 and Everglades + Dry Tortugas + Biscayne in Late December 2020. Get in touch!
What do you love about Baltimore's Creative Communities?
My favorite thing about the Baltimore creative community is how friendly and welcoming everyone is, this includes everyone from my fellow volunteers to the event attendees and even the vendors.  I love that CreativeMornings/Baltimore holds true to its core value of making everyone feel like they belong, especially a quirky/clumsy/goofball like me. I'm also constantly inspired by the amazing talents and stories that this city brings out.
What are you passionate about?
I'm passionate about design and its ability to tell stories and make people feel a certain way when words are not enough. I also love to travel in my pastime because I believe this world is filled with incredible views and even more amazing history. My favorite way to explore is through hiking and camping trips, which I’ve had the enjoyable opportunity to do in 13 National Parks so far.

Take 5: Cool Planters, Art Chocolates, a Clickety-Clack Keyboard + More
Every other week we’re inviting one of the Design Milk team to share five personal favorites – an opportunity for each of us to reveal the sort of designs we use and appreciate in our own lives from a more personal perspective. Technology Editor Gregory Han kicks off the Take 5 series…
1. Tortuga Platform Planters Set Over the last several months I’ve found myself withdrawing to the haven of a family of plants as a de-stressing mechanism. Spending quiet time coaxing growth seems apropos during these days when we all feel a bit stuck and stifled. As an avid collector and caregiver to this small ecosystem of house plants, I’m often repotting specimens that have outgrown their planter to maintain their health. I’m also always looking for an excuse to buy new planters to complement my leafed family. These nesting natural stone concrete planters are my current favorites, appealing to my affinity for brutalist forms, but one softened by gently speckled hues.
2. andSons Chocolatiers Signature Set “They’re almost too beautiful to eat”. Almost. As a chocoholic who has been known to scrape his teeth across hardened blocks of baking chocolate in more desperate times, these drops of artistic confections offered a much easier and drastically more satisfying experience. While everything in the set proved delicious (and beautifully designed), the Yuzu Verbena ganache is the specific bite I’ve been recommending everyone try – a sharp citrus-laden aromatic that fades into a creamy blanket of white chocolate that slowly drapes every taste bud like a sultry come-on.
3. Microsoft Surface Headphones 2 I don’t know when it happened, but somewhere down the line my relationship with headphones changed. While I still pop in earbuds while on a call or to listen to music while working out, my daily drivers in front of the computer have to be large-and-in-charge active noise canceling headphones. When my neighbors are working on their deck, the garbage truck is banging down the street, or when the cacophony of a young family of ravens proves unbearable, these are the headphones I reach for. Can I be frank? I wear these as often without music as I do while listening to my playlists, enjoying the silence they provide with a button press. Those 13 levels of active noise cancellation really do a magical job of taking the edge of all the noises listed above, but what I really like about them is even after hours on end with them on, my ears don’t exhibit the cramped soreness often felt in the past – perhaps the most comfortable over-the-ear cans I’ve tried.
4. Tetra Elbow Pipe Until very recently this pipe – a gift – has been left unused. Not neglected. I’ve appreciated it this entire time for its totally tubular sculptural aesthetic and it kept a prominent spot on my bookshelf with promises of “one day”. That one day finally arrived, and I reached for the curved borosilicate glass pipe shaped with the pose of a resting cat, lit up, and discovered Ninon Choplin’s design takes on a mesmerizing allure with smoke traveling its length. It works as good as it looks. Tetra’s catalog is filled with other similar objects of purpose disguised as works of art, but this one wins on both counts.
5. NuType F1 Wireless Mechanical Keyboard Keyboards can be a sort of love or hate affair. I used to be in a non-committal relationship with Apple’s wireless keyboard for years, using them because they looked great and hardly took up any space across my narrow desk. Then I discovered the wonderful world of mechanical keyboards and haven’t been the same since. The tactile pleasure of striking these low profile keys equipped with Kailh Choc low profile mechanical switches delivers heavenly, indescribable ASMR pleasure. They just make it feel like you’re typing with purpose, but without being overly distracting. I’ve since bought another one for myself and gifted one to my wife, who agrees, these keyboards look, feel, and sound great – ideal because we can both clickety-clack in rhythm together now.
