Here's a query for YOU: who do you think Lynette befriends first outside Guna and Mist in Kardia? And who does she befriend first of HER own volition?
I love this ask so much you don't even know.
Tumblr media
For some clarity; for most Rune Factory games, when it comes to their protagonists and the possible love interests, I usually headcanon their ages as older than the game(s) hint at them being. So keep that in mind, and maybe add between 5 to 8 to even 10 years to your headcanon age. [I won't name any numbers, and that'll just lock me into my own math.] But treat these folks as their prime adult selves after the events of the first game, not ""kids""~
Mist is obviously the "friend whether (you) like it or not." Raguna is roped in by that genuine, adorable charm and Lynette would fall for it, too. Look at her, a second person so ready to extend care and forgiveness... And Lynn will just have to accept it and begin to move on into her new life. It's the easier choice. Better than feeling so goddamn sorry for herself (or worse, as we saw the lengths Ethelbard was pushing her to). Even if it feels strange being in such a tight knit and supportive environment, and even if she'll look for cracks that prove it's all a lie.
After Mist, though, once she forces herself to try and live in a new place...
Lara and Tabatha and Jasper wind up becoming nice to talk to.
[ With a bonus of Sabrina and Godwin, with the questions of Newmann and Felicity. ]
Lara likely puts up a furious air at first, How many people could have been hurt, how many HAD as those stupid things were put around town... (Not to mention those RUMORS that spread about how Raguna lost his memory....) but quickly comes to realize that Lynette was involved, but not solely, entirely responsible. Not to mention she sees Lyn as someone who is... Tired. Dragging themselves through every day. Lara gives a deep sigh. So. She aids this new member of the town under the promise that Lynette helps others as she tries to help herself. While those medical visits become less and less, both women can't help but cross the street and seek one another out to talk. They may not have much in common when it comes to interests or tastes, but. It's nice. Sometimes you don't need all that. A connection can just be there.
Tabatha and Jasper feel like easy conversation. Both are used to more sharp natured persons, so they wouldn't be offended. And both don't put stock in local prejudices, political lines, and the nonsense of governing bodies (Jasper with his ties to the Sainte-Coquille business affairs, and Tabatha connected to that+comparing to her original home). I feel like both would be very quick to see past where Lynette is from, and her previous "occupation."
Jasper is such a kind and happy fellow. I could see him just wanting to know about what it was like as a person in Sechs Aristocracy, if it's similar to what he's heard from x, y, z.... Asking Lyn about her life, not job, probably helps break some ice. Maybe Lynette gets to gossip about petty, tiny things that she hadn't gotten to enjoy before. And how about that line of meats from those critters native to the heart of the empire...? Oh Jasper NEEDS some of those cuts- marinated in a very specific way, Lynette swears on her life (and it's just a joke this time).
And Tabatha? She's so calm. So soothing. She won't force Lyn to talk, but will listen when the other dares to break the silence. She seems to know how to enter a conversation and could find the perfect, small gift to make someone's day. I've drawn Lynette before in alternate clothing before so she's not in her military gear, and I stand firm that Tabatha made that set. They're good for the local weather, they're made of comfortable, fine material... and it's got to feel better not being in something that made Lynette stand out so much.
Bonus in Sabrina and Godwin, who are names that wouldn't leave me alone when thinking about this.
Godwinnn. He's skeptical and rightfully so, but as everything calms down, he has to take a chance. It's either hold that grudge and be retaliatory forever, which would strongly influence those looking at him for his decision, or choose to trust this person and get back to some semblance of older life. He prefers the peace of the latter, and is rewarded- especially when she does find her own pattern in the town. In fact, he's able to, well, "forget" about her, in a good way. She's a face he'll greet with an "Oh-! Didn't know you were coming, how are things?" since he doesn't hear much about her. But it's a positive feeling. A hearty greeting. Not just a nod and a walk past.
(She has to be brought up in tangent given our affinity for her, as well, but Felicity was watching that decision- and she's. It's not that she didn't support the decision, and she doesn't think it was the wrong choice... but Felicity's going to need to see some effort and proof. This is a risk. Like Lara, but a deeper rooted feeling. Stronger if she's paired with Raguna, as she'd hear those rumors, and be disgusted by them. But she could be won over, if more slowly, as her patient FP/LP mechanic implies.)
I feel like, for some reason, Newmann would keep some distance, questioning Godwin's decision, while Sabrina would be able to immediately see this new townsperson means no harm. Sabrina keeps an open seat at the bar and the restaurant and could act as a conversation or a buffer- detract attention from some of those who haven't yet become comfortable with their new neighbor. Sabrina doesn't care for bullshit, and she's got a good example to set for her son. I almost wish Lynette were a jump older still, as these two could've been a fun freaking dynamic!
Double bonus; Ivan hates the living daylights out of her and there is absolutely no recovery, due to my headcanon of him having witnessed Raguna's abduction before his memory loss. Lynette also knows who Ivan really is, she'd done her research. This is a pact to act civil among civil people. That's it.
I know I've joked about not absolutely adoring RF4's characters as much as most people, but one thing it did that I appreciate was those conversations you could trigger if multiple towns people are standing near one another in a scene/on a holiday/etc. It'd be fun to get others talking not to Raguna, but to each other, to hear what they'd think. Early game, invasion time, post game...
RF1s. Please. I'm begging you.

"And this-" Her skip-step up the library stairs came to a jarring halt when Selphy snapped the parasol shut and flashed it up to her shoulders. Teal eyes stared forward, sunrise burning within them, stoking anger that felt so out of place. Mist could only stand, one foot off the ground, as confused as a critter in lamplight. Had something happened? Did she not hear? Selphy was normally so joyous, someone who could match her own energy! Oh, the conversations they'd shared- "Are you... introducing them to everyone in town?" "I..." Mist risked - yes, risked, for she didn't like looking away from the librarian in that mood - a look down the slope, toward her former roomate of a good time, who stood guarded. Grounded. Tense in a way that she hadn't seen the woman use for a few years. Ready to fight. "Yes-" Selphy huffed, indignant, dismissive. "Don't bother. I know who she is. And I don't want her anywhere near my home."
Mist just wants everyone to be friends---
There's a theory out there that Selphy is a runaway royal from the Sechs Empire. I like the idea that Selphy is a member of the family who used to rule before Ethelberd took power... and that a certain Commander's family aided in that coup.
So there's a lot of animosity, huh!

Glad you're feeling a little better!! Maybe one of your favorite locations from Frontier? I haven't played it but it looks beautiful from what I've seen
Tumblr media
Thank you for this ask, Twig. It was a wonderful excuse to paint a background, which is my most favorite thing♥
I have to say, I waffled on this decision because there's so many things "your favorite location" could mean; most story memorable, most beautiful, place with the best music, etc.
Eventually I decided on the game's second dungeon,
LAVA RUINS.
In a way, this place is none of the above; it doesn't have my favorite music from the game's soundtrack (that would be the Snow Ruins).
It isn't my most beautiful (Raguna's homestead or the Town Square with full Runeys, just, yes).
It isn't the most story memorable (that, again, belongs to Snow Ruins. Notice a pattern?)
BUT. This place won out over its wintery cousin in this art choice because it has personal significance, in the place where I got nearly softlocked in this game for four. years. all because I had the WORST rng known to mankind.
A tip, if you ever get one or two pieces of silver at this point in the game, covet them. Make them into an icy hammer, or a nice sickle. Then you unlock the rest of the game. Try to not be like me, who simply never got a silver drop, who had to kill mini golem after mini golem after mini golem in vain hopes that were almost never fulfilled. My younger self, in my first year of college, could only find the time to play this game during summer and winter break. And it took... several tries.
I have such a love-hate relationship with it. I hear the first minute of this place's theme in my head, and can remember the run to a certain junction where those golems spawned. I remember the RELIEF, and how FAST I got things done after I got that little piece of ore. The white whale of my Rune Factory life was slain. It is also just, an amazing place lore wise that sets the tone for the rest of the game; a Rune Research Facility, destroyed by some experiment done there years and years ago... These Raguna games are subtly dark, yo, and I love it.
All in all, this is not a true to life representation of this place. I no longer have a save file where I can run around and take screenshots, so I decided to not base this on any particular area. The patterns on the place's walls seem to be mainly geometric from screenshots I found, so I decided to make up my own patterns. Two of the game's bosses are hidden in the walls, and a Terrable is in between them. Because, well. I can.
Also, the dungeon theme for the road;

OH I suppose I've never really explained this, my bad
No, I don't generally consider Kyle a result of Raguna/Lynette - though I'd love to explore that, as I am a lover of AUs. Like, seriously; more AUs means more good stories!
Personally, my view is that Kyle would've been a couple years old when the first RF game ended, so a toddler when his mother made her flight to Kardia. (Which also implies a daring trek back into the empire to smuggle her son out, heck yeah!) Kyle's father is then likely someone she split up with due to sheer personality difference, perhaps them not having any true drive or direction in their life, and Lynette wasn't going to put up with "dealing with TWO children." So. Out the door you go, he who was forgotten. Lynette, being a busy military figure, has a trusted caretaker that she paid to take care of the boy in her absence.
This decision was made originally by the note that Kyle isn't a powerful Earthmate, and there aren't hints of royal blood in him, like there were for Raguna. And I've stuck with it the oast few years~
I DO, however, occasionally think of Raguna as step-dad AUs, because that is SUCH a nice image. The shamed commander doing her best to adjust to new life among the people she was going to kill, who have slowly softened up to her thanks to various efforts, including the word of the trusted Earthmate- and then the fellow is a kind, positive presence around poor confused and homesick Kyle...
As for Frontier... This is honestly my FAVORITE headcanon 👀
I tend to consider its events as post RF1, but in a weird way. Like how a lot of books are written to be standalone, RF1 gives us details of Raguna wandering, having lost his home, and looking for someone familiar. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but that game also does not place nearly as much emphasis on Raguna's lost memories, so I infer he has some to work with (the first game). And once in Trampoli, he can't help but help with the place's problems that need an Earthmate's touch to fix. So- why the transition from one city to another? Why did Raguna leave his previous home (and mayhaps wife)? Why did some rf1 characters cross over, but not others?
For me... The Sechs invaded a second time. Without Terrable to help, without early warning. And they succeeded. (The empire's return in RF4 and Venti's inability to guard the border strengthen this idea for me.) Characters were scattered, and Raguna wound up with the group in Trampoli.
So I do consider Frontier canon, but with some personal opinions along the way~

My spread piece for the Level Up! A Rune Factory Adventure Zine! which went live back on April 20th! \o/
The Zine is a completely free download with some amazing photos, artwork and writing, so check out the link above to get yourself some nice Rune Factory content from across each of the games♥
I can't explain how glad I was to get that Danaan Cave assignment. [Well, actually, I can! Under the cut :B]
I was ecstatic when I saw I had earned the Danaan Cave assignment, because... Once upon a time, I was a little 13 year old Margot, back in the early days of 2007, playing the first game of the series for the first time. I had always wondered- had always yearned for more of a fight back in that cave. Sure, we take down the tank. Sure, we wind up getting Commander Lynette onto our side, after getting her life spared.
But it's an old game. Everything happened so quickly.
What if we had to take her down, first? She's got those medals. Those weapons. What a rush, what a BOSS that would be.
The Tank was a distraction.
She's the real test.
It's always been a personal headcanon of mine that it was Commander Lynette who took Raguna down the day he was taken and drugged to wipe his memory. So in Danaan Cave, now, it's round two.
Lynette. Raguna. Sword v Sword.
So much more on the line.
And we, as Raguna, win. And we pass. The tank smoking. The snow falling.
The Sechs Machines rumbling in the distance...
And now, she's got to help us take down her former boss.
Thank you to the Zine folks for this outlet, and to my significant other and sister who helped me with feedback on my art, itself~

Not gonna lie. These two pieces of dialogue give me a lot of ideas. Alone, they’re not much, but if you combine them with that old idea/report that a shipwreck is what separated Ivan and Raguna as kids...
It also made me wonder; why doesn’t Raguna just build a small bridge, or use something to float, across the moat to get to Misty Bloom? The moat isn’t the biggest, even if we ignore convenient video game landmark sizes/distortions. Or, why doesn’t he learn a spell to freeze the water? Surely the idea of an ice spell that freezes part of a body of water isn’t too crazy for this universe? Or, why not use an earth/rock spell to create a surface to walk on? Even if that surface lasts only the briefest of moments? [Assuming that the rocks don’t remain permanently displaced like in earthbending. But what if they do remain? All the more reason to try, right?]
Why are we forced to wait for winter in order to enter that cave? Why is the natural deep freeze the only thing that makes Raguna feel like it’s safe enough to cross? Why wouldn’t he be confident enough in something he did (spell) or something he made (bridge, boat, something)?
So the idea came to me- maybe Raguna is averse to large bodies of water. So none of the above is any conscious thing. And considering Ivan’s distaste for stormy weather combined with the shipwreck rumor, maybe Raguna doesn’t like storms either.

This may be something I work into my portrayals of him, in future art or those writing project, as I can see a lot of possibilities arising from it--

Margot’s Rune Factory Headcanons #3;
Y’know, for the longest time, I was confused by [RF1] Camus’ artwork;
Tumblr media
As a kid, I never realized that Camus had a dark sleeve; I thought that his left arm was a prosthetic, with the leather bits seen being what helped hold his prosthetic on. I thought it was so cool, that the dude who knows about monsters and their care did his work with a false arm. And then I realized, uh, wait, I had misremembered.
To this day, I still prefer to think of him having a prosthesis; maybe it’s something almost reminiscent to Fullmetal Alchemist’s Automail, or maybe it’s something more magically powered, given the RF universe? Either way, his father is the town’s doctor, it makes sense that his son would have something super fitted to him~

Margot’s Rune Factory Headcanons #2;
I stumbled across this personal headcanon in notes I’d taken from my last playthrough (on top of all the babble I did about the library's books last week);
#2 - “Grimoire” is a word for the Earthmates who are connected to a Dragon [in this case, Terrable], and thus are able to wield their power.
Tl;dr - Raguna could be a Grimoire, and Ethelberd tried to become a Grimoire.
I’ve messed with this thought for several days, so hopefully this makes sense.
Headcanon that the word “Grimoire” has lost a great deal of meaning as time has gone on. Terrable has been sleeping, resting for so very long- in my headcanon, he’s been resting since the day Fiersome was sealed away. Terrable, for the longest time, had the best chance to share his power with Earthmates. Meanwhile, Aquaticus preferred to guide Earthmates instead of lending them power, and Ventuswill has given so much of her own energy to the land that there’s not any power she can spare. Truthfully, however, there hasn’t been anyone to truly wield Terrable’s true power, or any Native Dragon’s power, in generations.
There are some modern day Earthmates who are strong enough to feel Terrable’s presence within the earth. (Headcanon: Doctor Edward is one, as is Ivan, as is Raguna.) Some of those Earthmates have even had strange dreams of communication with Terrable - reminiscent of the dreams in RF:Frontier - but that’s it. (Ivan is one of those few- and the most trusted to the King, mayhaps.)
Nowadays, “Grimoire”’s correct meaning is mainly only used correctly in Norad’s Capitol and Sylphia, among royal researchers, mages, and knights. Even then, the term is used incredibly loosely, and quietly. (Ventuswill isn’t exactly about to spill secrets when she is weak, and the ‘right person’ isn’t around.) Among the rest of the country, the ‘Grimoire is a dragon’ or ‘Grimoire is a mage’ legends have become increasingly popular, ideas that stemmed from two halves of the truth. (The tale has become one of Kardia’s tourism drives; visitors enjoy the small town’s festivals and a chance to get a ye olde photograph at the base of the mountain.)
Meanwhile, the Sechs were on the right track, in having the idea that using an Earthmate would be a good way to get to Terrable… That an Earthmate and the idea of Grimoire were connected…
No one is sure of a Grimoire’s true form because no one is quite sure who a Grimoire will be, not anymore. It’s not often there’s an Earthmate strong enough, a situation dire enough, or an Earthmate with the correct will and drive to handle that power. Those who fit that criteria become the dragon’s messenger, just like those Earthmates of old who worked alongside Terrable to seal away Fiersome, or those who Ventuswill befriended long ago. (And it’s probably a good thing Fiersome doesn’t seem to be able to lend anyone power.) A true Grimoire would be granted powerful magic and stamina, a gift fromthe Dragon themselves, some of their essence in their veins- a force beyond any monster or mage in the mortal plane.
And that’s why Etherlberd was so desperate to get his spell right- first, against Terrable, second, against Ventuswill. He needed to figure out how to wield that power, to become a Grimoire, or something close to it, before someone wielded it against him.
So, to repeat, tl;dr - Raguna essentially = Grimoire, and Ethelberd tried to force himself to become a Grimoire.
And, personally, I’d like to see something where a RF hero actually gets to use that power, instead of the Dragon showing off all on his own. Not that Terrable driving off the Sechs Army wasn’t satisfying, but like. Let the Earthmates have their Thor: Ragnarok moment!
Please note; I haven’t beaten Tides of Destiny yet, so if that happened, I wouldn’t know. Also no spoilers pls I’ve avoided them thus far and would like to continue <3
And again, these are all personal headcanons made for fun, not meant to be hard facts or game lore <3
