He clarified quickly, but avoided eye contact again. "Apparently everyone agreed and thought it'd be a good prank...I guess?         "You're right. I should put you down then." Scarab said, shaking his head as he made a move to hover the cube over the surface of the water and earning a flustering whine from his prisoner.

       "Alright, you win, okay? What do you want? Do you want me to admit I want you to keep touching me? I want you to stroke over the edges again? To dig your claws in? Squeeze me? I've never been cubed before and this is the closest thing I have to actual physical touch, okay? Excuse me for being a little desperate."

       "Not quite what I was after, but the begging is nice." He admitted, dragging the tip of his claw down one of the edges, feeling the entire shape shudder. "Keep going."

        "With jokes like that I might." Fabian muttered, but his gentle voice remained playful.

        "Speaking of," Jordan nudged the pair as they passed, "Your boyfriend is waiting. Get a move on so we can go." They headed over to help their coworker lift the gear onto the desk.

        "Again?" Fabian sighed, following then with Shaquille close behind.

        "You know it doesn't take the scrap until you do it." Jordan said, dusting their hands off and looking back at him. "I've worked this job two years and I've never seen Jeb so responsive to an employee."

        "You never listen to me." Orbo sighed, rolling his body and eyes while he skirted around the smaller being. "Orders. From. The. Boss. Our new auditor did some digging on that unauthorized universe, made some good points. The new guy's a lot more likable than you, but for some reason he liked your work ethic. Put in a good word and the boss agreed. No more rogue universes, no more Prismo. Few hundred years ago I probably would've put up more a fuss, but you changed him. Really dragged down his vibe, maybe this was for the best."

        Scarab's claws pierced the wall, their grip the only thing keeping him standing and grounded as he fumed but listened, powerless to change this.

        "Anyway, should be going. Congrats on the promotion. You finally got your wish, mate. How does it feel?" The orb dropped a specialized cane at his feet, the clatter punctuating the silence, and his lack of response earned a scoff. "Ungrateful as always, eh, Scrabby?"

He wavered and drew in his claws, pressing his fist to the surface instead while he regained his nerve. "Yet, I fail once. Once. And my wings were mutilated. Ripped from my back for my incompetence. So I would always, always remember my place. To do as I was told or suffer the consequences, but not you. No, never you. You spit in the face of my punishment everyday you continue to exist."

        Prismo didn't speak, no words could communicate everything he wanted to say and everything he was afraid to.

        It tapped its chin again, humming in thought before pointing at the snuggling one. "Well, that one would seem to be our affectionate side. It's quite small..." Then it shifted to the bug shouting at that one, "I'm assuming our confrontational or defiant side."

        "Anger?" Prismo asked as he held up the pickle jar, the beetle inside jumped and stomped before trying to bite him through the glass.

        "Anger." The scarab agreed before shifting to the one making a mess. "Mischievous side. And-" It paused on a sixth Scarab.

        They both watched as it sat in a dirty microwavable dinner plate and pulled off its arm. Munching down, the appendage regrew with each bite it took. Once the limb was back, it ripped it off again and continued eating itself.

        "We don't talk about that one..."
