Finally, Saudi biotech Plastus[2], which converts organic waste into biodegradable plastic, won first prize in the Rocket Fuel Startup Pitch Challenge at the LEAP Expo in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The jury wanted to salute a circular economy model and an alternative to the use of fossil fuels.
Created in 2021 by Nouf Alhazmi, a Saudi bio-engineer and Yousef Abukhdair, a former American-Palestinian financier, Plastus has developed a patented technology to manufacture bioplastics from food scraps (frying oil, apple trunk, orange peels) and through a fermentation process. The used fermentation process of bacteria is with environmentally friendly carbon source. Its PHA bioplastics fully break down in the environment in two months but has a shelf life of two years, as per a Wired report. Petroleum (aka traditional) plastic on the contrary never disappears and can pollute not only our bodies but also our delicate planet with microplastics.
“This is so huge. It will make it possible to finish the entire retrofitting stage and make so much happen for us. I’m speechless,” said Plastus CEO Nouf Alhazmi.
In addition to Plastus sealing the main prize, Rwanda’s Bag[3] Innovation secured the early-stage startup prize of US$150,000. Other prizes included the Aviatrix Award for most innovative startup pioneered by women, which went to Saudi Arabia’s Takadao[4]; the Technology for Humanity Award won by Nigeria’s RiceAfrika[5]; Wicrypt[6], also from Nigeria, taking home the most impressive startup in the Metaverse and Web 3.0 domains; and, finally, the UAE’s Verofax[7], which was recognised for the most ground-breaking use of Artificial Intelligence.
