The Middlesex University
Tumblr media
I am doing my internship at The Middlesex University. This university, which is founded as an institution in 1878 and became a university in 1992, has 4 campuses. They are located in London, Dubai, Mauritius and Malta. The campus where I am working is of course the campus in London, more specific in North-London. This campus has a total of 23.000 student at the moment and has a large offer of courses you can follow. What I noticed the first couple of days I worked here was that the university cares a lot about the environment. For example; every new building they build has a rooftop with plant on it so they give something back to the environment. Also, on the same buildings, there are “living walls”, These are walls on the outside of the building with a lot of plants on it, another way to give back to the environment.
Tumblr media
Apart from all the studying, there is of course a lot of other things to do. for example; there are lots of different groups of people with similar interests who organise activities so they can make new friends and have a good time. You can also do some sports at the campus, there is a fitness available and you can do some other sports like handball, tennis,… Every week, I follow 1 lesson for one hour, Thursday from 11 till 12, I’m attending the class Marketing. It’s very interesting to see how everything works in a classroom, and of course the lesson itself is very interesting. Also experiencing how a working place looks and works, it’s very helpful to see what I want to do later. And I’ve also learned that it’s not just always everybody there one desk every day, here they have some offices that have loads of tables, but everyday you may have an different table, it’s just who sits there first, gets to keep that space for that day. luckily, the department where I work, everybody has there own desk so you don’t have to clean up every day.
Tumblr media
When you entry the main building, you get to the “quad”. this is a very big, nice place where you can sit, eat something, order a coffee,… It used to be a big outside place, but they’ve changed it so now you have a roof above your head.

Africa’s Future: Collaboration with Foreign Universities

Africa’s Future: Collaboration with Foreign Universities
Tumblr media
Foreign satellite campuses in Africa can help the continent reduce skills gap caused by students leaving to study abroad and often settling there.
Nelson Mandela rightly put that: “Education is the most powerful weapon, which you can use to change the world.”
Pan-African leaders such as Mandela, Kwame Nkurumah, among others advocated for education. Since then, the continent has experienced vast development spanning the banking and medicine, agriculture, to technology fields among others.
Dating back the colonial times, more Africans were encouraged and even funded to study abroad, an effort that brought positive and negative impact on the continent in equal measure.
Worth noting is the fact that the first university in the world was African – Al Karaouine, in Fez, Morocco (859 AD). The institution was founded by an African woman. It was not until 229 years later, that the first European University was built at Bologna in 1088 AD.
So, where did we lose to the Western education? The answers lie in the disruption brought about by slavery, colonialism and destruction from the 15th century on. Additionally, insufficient resources have forced African students to seek education abroad.
Commendable it may be, however, often African graduates settle abroad after studies. The education immigration leaves Africa deprived of innovative and vibrant youth to drive the economy forward.
Thierry Sauzier, the chief executive of Medine Group told the African Report: “There is a huge shortage of skills in Africa and a real problem with talent-poaching.” Mr Sauzier said the shortage was due to educating Africans in Europe or the US. Often, most of the graduates settle abroad after. Medine Group is building an education hub of the Mauritian campus of the UK’s Middlesex University.
Satellite campuses
One way to harness its vast human and natural resources in the direction needed, Pan-African icon, Kwame said is “to allow the African genius full expression”.
Educating African students locally will benefit the continent more. To support Africa to close the skills shortage, western universities are creating partnerships to offer quality education in the continent through satellite campuses.
South Africa is a major beneficiary of such partnerships which has seen many African students heading South of Africa for further studies. Education in the regional campuses is not only cheaper, but is also customized to address local development challenges.
Mauritius is yet another country that has opened its doors to foreign universities in efforts to expand education in the country and in Africa as a whole.
Sauzier is trying to persuade corporates to think about sending their local staff for degrees in Mauritius as a way of keeping expatriate worker costs down. He quoted by the African Report.
Besides South Africa and Mauritius, a report by Campus France shows that Morocco and Angola are also catering to a large number of African students. According to the report, the partnerships between western universities are an “investment for the future” for Africa.

easyJet pilots first to graduate with BSc (Hons) in Professional Aviation Pilot Practice Degree
Today marks the graduation of the first group of easyJet pilots on the first airline-supported BSc (Hons) Professional Aviation Pilot Practice PAPP degree. This unique degree course, designed specifically for pilots, was launched in 2013 in a partnership between airline pilot training and simulation organisation L3 Commercial Training Solutions (L3), (formerly CTC Aviation),  Middlesex University and easyJet.
The seven pilots graduating today – Anna McGrady, Steven Hadley, Matthew Archer, George Baker, James Rose, Reece Montagu and Jack Shaw are the very first in the country to graduate on the degree programme and all started their professional flying careers flying with easyJet.
They are the first of over 130 students currently enrolled on the Middlesex University degree course while completing or having completed their airline pilot training at L3’s Airline Academy.
The BSc (Hons) degree in Professional Aviation Pilot Practice (PAPP) is awarded by Middlesex University and run through the Institute of Work-based Learning. This time-efficient degree does not require cadets to attend a university campus and enables them to gain two professional qualifications (airline transport pilot licence and degree) within three years.
The first two years of the course are completed at L3’s Airline Academy, through training on an airline pilot career programme alongside parallel, practice based university work. Study continues beyond their initial airline pilot training once they join easyJet, flying as a co-pilot while completing their third and final year of the degree, allowing them to learn while they earn.
Training to become a pilot while completing the degree can also provide aspiring pilots access to student loans to help finance their studies.
Speaking about the graduation today Brian Tyrrell, easyJet’s Head of Flight Operations, commented:
“I am delighted that the first of our pilots participating in this degree are graduating today as it is absolutely vital to easyJet’s future that we have a pipeline of talented young pilots coming through.
“We have been delighted to work in partnership with L3 Commercial Training Solutions and Middlesex University to offer this degree course for our pilots which builds on the easyJet cadet programme that offers a clear career path for all pilots joining easyJet.
“L3’s Airline Academy graduates join easyJet as co-pilots and once they have completed their first year with us they can then join easyJet as permanent employees.  After flying for a further two years and reaching 2500 hours with easyJet they then become Senior First Officers.  From that stage the aim is to achieve their Command and become Captains.
“With easyJet’s continued planned growth the time taken from First Officer to Captain is likely to be quicker than at other airlines. Beyond that there are further opportunities for pilots to develop their career whether that is into a training or management role.
“What this means is that those pilots joining easyJet now could well be looking at achieving their Command within 6 years. All our pilots will be flying on a modern fleet of aircraft, with industry leading punctuality, high quality training and an unrivalled European network and those  joining easyJet can be confident of a long and successful career.”
easyJet pilot, Anna McGrady who is graduating commented:
”I am thrilled to be graduating alongside my colleagues today on the BSc (Hons) in Professional Aviation Pilot Practice. This course has given me the opportunity to undertake a degree alongside my commercial pilot training. The degree is designed in a way that fits very well into the flight training schedule, with no degree modules required at key pressure points – for example, during the 14 ATPL exams that all pilots undertake.  I consider the degree has taught me to be a reflective practitioner, continually assessing how I can improve my performance.
The degree course also qualifies students for a student loan, which helps towards the costs of commercial pilot training. Having achieved my commercial pilot’s licence during the second year of the degree, I was employed as an airline pilot with easyJet in the final year, which also eased the financial pressures.
Throughout the degree course, I’ve received considerable support and encouragement from easyJet, L3 Airline Academy and Middlesex University.  There has always been someone to approach for advice and it has always been willingly given.  I am extremely pleased that I chose to undertake this degree.”
Alan Crawford, President of L3 Commercial Training Solutions commented:
“We are delighted to continue our partnership with both easyJet with Middlesex University to provide this innovative qualification and to celebrate the incredible achievements of our graduates here today. Developing new avenues for professional development means we remain at the forefront of pilot training, providing current and high-impact training to aspiring pilots in total alignment with airline requirements.”
Mick Betts, Director of Aviation Programmes at Middlesex University, commented:
“We are delighted to see the first group of students on this innovative new degree about to graduate. They have been a pleasure to work with throughout and their achievements on this work based degree is a testimony to the quality of the training they receive at L3’s Airline Academy, at work in their first year at easyJet and in their academic work with Middlesex.  Our degree partnership with L3 Commercial Training Solutions has worked extremely well and with over 130 students now on the programme this group will be the first of many professional pilots to graduate on this joint programme”.
Anyone wishing to apply to the Generation easyJet Pilot Training Programme and integrate a degree into their training can do so via L3AirlineAcademy.com/easyJet

MEDIA BUYING FOR DIGITAL MARKETING
Tumblr media
A digital marketing plan is a document sharing the details for all the planning of a company’s digital marketing campaigns or actions (Penalver 2019). How to structure a digital marketing campaign plan? A successful digital marketing plan has to consider among many other things, media planning and media buying.
A media plan is the entire, collective result of both of the above including a final evaluation of the campaign’s effectiveness. Media Planning is the process of selecting the optimal combination of media outlets for advertising a particular marketing message. It involves researching, identifying, analyzing, comparing, planning, and working around a brand’s budget. Media buying is the complementary, secondary process by which an individual or agency takes the insights gleaned from the media planner and begins to find and negotiate buying ad space across the intended media channels. This can be automated or done manually depending on preference, objectives, audience, budget, and so forth (mediatool.com).
Conducting a situational analysis before media buying
This is the process of critically evaluating the internal and external factors that affect an organisation. This is done before a new product is released or a new initiative is taken. A situational analysis will bring light to strengths, challenges, weaknesses, opportunities and threats affecting a company (Lake 2020). Factors that are analysed in a situational analysis include:
Product situation. The product has to be determined. You may want to view this definition in parts such as the core product and any secondary or supporting services or products that you sell. Viewing your products and services separately helps determine how each relates to your core clients’ needs.
Competitive situation. The main competitors have to be analyzed. Determine how they compare to your business such as competitive advantages.
Distribution situation. In terms of the distribution, a review has to be done in terms of how you get your products to market, such as through distributors or other intermediaries.
Environmental factors. External and environmental factors can include economic or sociological factors that impact your business’s performance.
Opportunity and issue analysis. A SWOT analysis is to be undertaken to determine any strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats that may affect your business and its performance.
The five steps of the media buying and planning process are as follows:
Identify target audiences through comprehensive market research.
Understand your audiences’ interests.
Find your audiences when they are most receptive to your messages.
Deliver creativity that motivates them to take action.
Test and retest your ad placements and creative to uncover what’s working and what’s not. Refine and improve.
Media Buying: Calculating BDI and CDI
Tumblr media
Branding Development Index (BDI) relates the percent of a brand’s sales in a market to the percent of US population in that same market. Category Development Index (CDI) relates the percent of a category sales in a market to the percent of the US population in that same market to the percent of the US population in that same market.
The points to remember when calculating BDI and CDI include:
Indexes should be expressed as whole numbers.
BDI and CDI assume that the U.S. population represents the “norm” or base of “100.”
Markets with the highest index numbers do not necessarily represent
the best potential.
