Feature: 2017: Third Quarter Favorites

As we stumble into the final quarter of the year, TMT would like to temper the political incoherence and informational carelessness of the last few months with another transmission from our trusty quarter-list propaganda machine. And you, dear reader, are invited! Whether it was transcendental smackdowns (Young Thug) or moonlit ruminations (The National), unlistenable prayers (Lingua Ignota) or symbol play (Giant Claw), 2017’s summer sounds found our bodies trembling (Pan Diajing), swiped like a shoe along concrete ($3.33), and glowing with deceitful charm (White Poppy). It didn’t matter if it was coming from the Dar Es Salaam underground (Nyege Nyege Tapes), a modded 70s Speak & Spell (White Suns), or Jack Rabbit’s Palace (Twin Peaks); it didn’t matter if it was evinced by lurker auteurs (Nmesh), sonic ecologists (Avey Tare), or one Pretty Bitch (Lil B). In the face of an ever-increasing shitshow, the last three months of music carried on like if often does: with a mix of hope, absurdity, and some exquisite world-building, with hearts both heavy (death’s dynamic shroud) and gentle (Mark Templeton). Now entombed in some lo-poly pyramid, we can see the ‘wave for what it was: a dig through the garbage-dump archives of the 1990s to recover, warp, and recontextualize whatever memories got lost beneath the pile. The samples and annotations would be nothing, though, without the music, and lucky for you Pharma delivered well on this front. Not only is this Nmesh’s best album to date, but these 26 tracks (plus many remixes) ran rings around an entire micro-era of electronic music, wearing it out until the soul within was revealed. Plus, how brazen is that Ferris Bueller sample? –Dylan Pasture --- Pan Daijing Lack [PAN] [LISTEN · REVIEW] Abstract music, even “noise” if you want, is too often discussed in relation to absence. Absence of harmony, of “form,” of the philosophy of separation underpinning musical tradition per se. I imagine that, in witnessing a performance by Pan Daijing, who discusses her music along the lines of embodiment and the “acting out” of sound, it becomes difficult to persist in this manner of speaking. With Lack, a document of that performance practice, she rattles the consciousness of the home listener from its critical distance back to where it belongs: the wanting, lurid presence of the body. “Practice of Hygiene” breaks words — “above, below,” “excuse me,” “why do I have to” — into moaning, groaning, and almost-human creaking, cradled in the bleed of a low, repeating piano note. A dissonant arpeggio dances for five minutes across “The Nerve Meter,” a synthesized pattern that seems to shake the receiver as if having passed through air from a nearby amplifier. At the climactic moment of “Lucid Morto,” the final track, delayed vocals combine with the unsure, three-note melody of a meaty trance lead. In different and captivating ways, this album takes advantage of the notion that sound is a physical encounter; its Lack is not of form or substance, but the one that lives in all of our hungering, trembling bodies. –Will Neibergall --- Milo who told you to think??!!?!?!?! [Ruby Yacht/Alpha Pup] [LISTEN · REVIEW] “Ghiath Matar is dead, roses are not armor,” goes the first rapped line, and if you’ve fallen into the trap of thinking that Milo’s strictly a “college rapper,” you might also be assuming that Ghiath Matar is the name of some ancient Eastern deity or the protag of a Russian fantasy novel. But it’s not. He was, I know now, a Syrian activist who gave flowers to soldiers, then was arrested, tortured and killed. The next line goes, “In my neighborhood, it was become a poet or a farmer.” Writing amazing, beautiful, weighty verse is part of Milo’s job, as is performing. But geeky flights of fancy aren’t gone, they’re just getting pointier. Also in the first song, he says, “Hold the self like J’Zargo in Winterhold,” referring, of course, to the fictional cat wizard and mage college in Elder Scrolls: Skyrim. Did I mention this is the album’s first verse? It goes deeper still, metaphors atop one another like racks. I haven’t cracked the seal on my vinyl copy yet, because it looks so snug sitting in its shrinkwrap beside Down With People’s self-titled album. One more unsolicited thought: if Nostrum Grocers ever drops, there are going to be a lot of professional poets out there burning their own chapbooks. –Samuel Diamond --- Avey Tare Eucalyptus [Domino] [LISTEN · REVIEW] Ever since Campfire Songs, we’ve known that Avey Tare is a sonic ecologist, attuned to the environments and relationalities that bloom and burble through his terraformed recordings. Lately, though, his work has dripped somewhere Down There, somewhere murky and suffocating, goopy and fecund. But, aerated and sun-drenched afresh in the Eucalyptus, Avey Tare sounds like he can breathe again. Awash but not overwhelmed, the atmospheres that populate Eucalyptus oxygenate the expansive melodies Portner has always nursed — from “Chocolate Girl” to “Amanita” — only this time, they can photosynthesize something delectable out of the coral, salt, soil, air that have always permeated, always tickled, always snickered. There’s a spaciousness in the hebetic sonic environments here, room to snuggle and inhale. Like the calyx that protects the budding eucalyptus flower, Eucalyptus chaperones us into a nourishing amnion. We can’t help but curl up and sink in. –Benjamin Eckman Bieser --- Various Artists Twin Peaks (Music from the Limited Event Series) / Twin Peaks (Limited Even Series Soundtrack) [Rhino] [WATCH · WATCH · WATCH] IRRATIONALLY ESSENTIAL. There’s no other way to put it. For Twin Peaks fans, this was the Summer of Frost/Lynch. We watched, listened, pondered, argued; we breathed it, ate it, shit it, and then sniffed the shit for more clues. By the time the 18-part series that first infected us back in May fully metastasized at the beginning of September, we were zombies. Our gray matter was hollowed into cheese by Dougie-Cooper’s Disease, characterized by the frenetic drive to bathe ourselves in anything connected with the story in any way — e.g., these two albums, featuring Angelo Badalamenti’s iconically eerie scores, plot-pregnant songs from each of the show’s Roadhouse bands, and a few of Lynch’s maniacal manipulations. Even now with the series in the spooky, Lynchian rear-view, the obsession lingers. The past dictates the future. There’s no going back. –Dan Smart [pagebreak] SADAF SHELL [Outside Insight] [LISTEN · REVIEW] An album gets called cinematic when the music elicits the feeling of a wide shot, of a soundtracked scene, of prestigious drama. SHELL is cinematic because it’s a movie. Vestigial, footgazing, inflammable, SHELL is a movie with no stars, a movie with no film, that unfolds in unfolding, getting ahead of itself. Even the pronoun is in the can before she means to. So you hear SADAF: just trust your eyes. Audition requires participation, and here, off the top of her head, participation means filmmaking. The unmaking of, in stereo. Although there are no bangers, there’s still the magic of SADAF’s multiplying VOICE, playing over scripts. (Little fires, drowning onscreen, disowned from the spark that lit the faucet. Its instructions crossing themselves out, the skipping noise and scraping strings roll like credits, hand in hand, like the tide, a substitute for reaching through to the other side.) “Though there is stillness, I can feel your heartbeat. Though I can’t see you, I can hear a sound.” Fear that you hear yourself, but you don’t listen. –Pat Beane --- Various Artists Sounds of Sisso [Nyege Nyege Tapes] [LISTEN] It’s fair to say that Uganda’s Nyege Nyege Tapes has left a rather sizeable imprint on the TMT hivemind this year (see: Otim Alpha, Mysterians, and first-quarter fave Riddlore http://j.mp/2g2GAt3

"Why would a dead girl lie?"

Mình còn bài tập đó nhưng vẫn muốn gõ vài dòng lên blog nhỏ nhắn này. Nếu kì nghỉ xuân tới rảnh rỗi, mình sẽ sửa lại trang wordpress của mình rồi update mấy bài blog của mình, đơn giản để dễ lưu trữ lại thôi.

Mấy dòng suy nghĩ tự bật ra trong đầu mình bất cứ lúc nào, chẳng hạn như bộ phim này vậy. Lần đầu coi "13 Reasons Why" là sau khi đọc mấy post review trên facebook, mình chỉ là tò mò cô bạn Hannah Baker trong phim đã trải qua những gì. Mình đã đang coi dở tập 2 của seasons 2 khi mới ra đến đó, nhưng mình ngừng coi vì mình sợ mình sẽ ám ảnh rất lâu mất. Mỗi khi coi một bộ phim, đọc một câu chuyện, một quyển sách, mình luôn nhập tâm vào đó như thể mình là nhân vật trong đó vậy. Mình đọc Đất rừng phương Nam mà cảm giác hồi hộp lo lắng như hóa thân vào cậu bé An. Mình coi Yêu em từ cái nhìn đầu tiên mà cảm giác ấm áp như chính mình là Bối Vy Vy. Mình đọc mấy mẩu chuyện trên facebook và tưởng như mình là bạn nữ có người yêu ra đi bỏ bạn một mình ở thế giới này. Và tất nhiên là mấy lúc đó mình rầu rĩ cả mấy ngày, nếu quá mức, mình có khi mơ thấy, hoặc nghĩ đến cả tháng luôn. Mình chẳng nói ai nghe vì mình biết ai cũng sẽ cười sao mình kì cục vậy, mấy chuyện nhảm nhí cũng bị ảnh hưởng như thế.

Khoảng thời gian coi 13 Reasons Why season 1 đối với mình cũng ám ảnh không kém, mình thấy lo sợ, mình sợ mỗi khi nhìn thấy con trai hay người khác giới. Đối với một đứa từ nhỏ đã nhút nhát, nhất là với các bạn nam, bộ phim này làm mình không những ngại mà còn chuyển sang sợ người khác giới. Mình vừa coi vừa lo, mình cứ cầu mong có gì đó tốt hơn xảy ra với cô bạn Hannah Baker, dù mình đã biết kết cục season 1 thế nào. Dù đã biết trước, khi coi đến đoạn ngày Hannah quyết định kết thúc cuộc đời, mình vẫn cảm thấy thật đau xót. Lúc Hannah cầm dao cứa vào cổ tay, mình sợ đến mức không đam nhìn thẳng vào màn hình. Có cô bạn trong phim mà mình không nhớ tên, nói với Clay rằng, "tự sát là yếu đuối", ừ thì đúng là khi bạn chẳng dũng cảm đối mặt với khó khăn của cuộc đời nữa thì yếu đuối thật. Nhưng mình vẫn nghĩ khi tự sát người đó đã dùng tất cả mọi sự dũng cảm mạnh mẽ rồi, chỉ là lúc đó, chẳng có ai ngăn cản người đó đặt chúng vào chỗ mà đúng ra không nên đặt vào.

Mình chẳng cổ vũ ai tự tử hay trầm cảm hay buồn bã. Mình không phán xét ai làm những điều đó, vì mình hiểu họ đã phải khó khăn thế nào. Mình cảm thấy tiếc vì họ đã không được ai ôm lấy và thực sự cứu họ khỏi những chuyện tồi tệ họ phải trải qua. Vẫn luôn có một ước mơ mà mình đã tự nhủ bản thân mỗi ngày, rằng nếu bản thân mình không được sinh ra để làm tốt việc này việc nọ, để chơi thể thao giỏi, để học giỏi tự nhiên xã hội hay năng khiếu, để xinh đẹp khéo léo hay bất cứ điều gì, thì mình chỉ mong mình làm tốt một chuyện. Đó là làm người tốt, người làm cho mọi người hạnh phúc và hạnh phúc với cuộc đời này. Dù mình dở tệ việc an ủi ai đó vì mình chẳng biết bắt chuyện nữa mà. Dù mình chẳng biết nói gì sẽ tốt cho ai đó, cũng chẳng có tiền để mua gì cho ai. Mình vẫn thường cầu nguyện cho mọi người, chỉ im lặng thôi, nhưng mình đã nói sẽ cầu nguyện cho ai thì mình sẽ cầu nguyện cho người đó. Đến tận bây giờ, từ ngày biết Milo, cứ đến sinh nhật Milo, mình đều cầu nguyện cho Milo thật hạnh phúc.

Mình đôi lúc tiêu cực như Hannah Baker, mong muốn có người hiểu mọi điều mình trải qua, ôm lấy mình và bảo có người đó ở đây rồi. Nhưng mỗi khi mình tìm đến một ai đó mà mình cảm thấy đủ tin tưởng để nói ra những chuyện tồi tệ nhất, thì mình nhận ra ngoại trừ cầu nguyện thì mình chỉ có thể tự mình gánh chịu. Mình không trách ai vì chuyện của mình, sao mình lại trông chờ người khác giải quyết được.

Chỉ mong dù có thế nào, mình có thể làm Hannah Baker, nhưng đừng đếm đến lý do cuối cùng để sống rồi tự kết liễu cuộc đời. Vì mình phải hạnh phúc, đúng không?

Beyond a Steel Sky review

It’s the insidiousness of Spankles that bothers me at first.

It’s a small thing at first, of course. It almost always is. Even before you breach Union City’s walls, there’s a kiosk giving away free cans of the stuff – actually, there’s a lot of vending machines that give away the stuff. “Wow!”, you think, dispensing a can for gratis for the first time. “A benevolent government that gives away free refreshments? I’m in!”

And then you’ll spot another ad. And then another. The Spankles mascot – a nightmarish hybrid of Ronald McDonald and the terrifying clown from Poltergeist that haunted my early years – leers at you from… well, everywhere. You start pondering why there are advertisements at all given they’re issuing cans for free, anyway. Later, you might realise the tagline – “Explodes your mind!” – is a tad sinister. You wonder why they’re pushing it so hard. A health scanner will eventually recommend it, and that’s when it becomes impossible to ignore the distant alarm bell chiming in the back of your head.

A dystopian cityscape is nothing new, of course. You’ll jog gently along, weaving between the unhurried folk with their multicoloured hairdos and futuristic fashions, camera flicked upward to take in the full majesty of this stylish metropolis and its neon lights, and there’s a jarring sense of deja vu here. Ryan’s Rapture. Comstock’s Columbia. Cyberpunk’s Nivalis. And now we’re in Beyond a Steel Sky’s Union City.

The Council wants you to think Union City is a clean, pure place where your comfort is always at the top of its priority list, but it sometimes feels like the buildings don’t stretch up as much as they glare down at you, heavy and imposing and watchful. Monopods flick all around you – the omnipresent whoosh as they pass by will buzz and irritate in your ears like digital mosquitoes – but you’ll never know who’s in them, or where they’re going. You start to wonder if the shiny veneer of this beautiful place is precisely that; a veneer – a fake front concealing something altogether darker in the undergrowth.

It doesn’t seem to bother the guy we’re playing as, though. This is my first venture with Robert Foster as I didn’t play the predecessor, Beneath a Steel Sky, and while he’s likeable enough in a superficial, forgettable kind of way, I didn’t particularly warm to him, despite his noble mission to locate the missing child, Milo.

It’s the same for the eclectic supporting cast, too. They’re all fine; nothing terrible, even if their accents occasionally are a little wobbly, but I don’t feel any emotional connection to anyone I encounter, either. Like the slow, oddly animated NPCs who idle past you along the piazza – or occasionally on top of your head when the collision mechanics go hilariously wrong – they’re all a touch shallow. A touch irritating. A touch over the top.

You’ll spend a lot of time in the company of those NPCs, though, whether you want to or not. Building upon its point-and-click foundation, Beyond a Steel Sky’s story is character-driven, and your progression is typically gated by one of two things – character interactions or a hacking mini-game. For the latter, this means you’ll spend much of the game darting from one character to the other to gather intel, or exploring the environment to glean clues. This can be anything from luring fowl away from truck doors to exploring an apartment to find out more about the man who lived there, and it’s to the developers’ credit that the tasks you take on are varied and usually, if not quite always, fall short of laborious.

Foster’s never in a rush, however, and his lack of urgency doesn’t half sap you of yours, too. The hour I spent to-ing and fro-ing outside the city walls felt endless at the time, and while there’s a good variety of dialogue options to help you tease information out of the folks nearby, the UI doesn’t automatically grey out options you’ve already taken. This means you might inadvertently initiate a conversation you’ve already had – ugh – or worse, miss or delay an interaction because even though you’ve already spoken to say, Pixel, and figured you’d asked everything you could, there are numerous conversations that can be triggered by the same word prompt but there’s no way for you to know that without trial and error.

Worst still, your companions have a tendency to wander off, so initiating conversations can be a lengthy, frustrating affair that will see you trail after them, desperately waiting for the button prompt that lets you converse with them to pop up again. There are certainly worse crimes than this, I know, but given so much of your progress here depends upon character interactions, it’s a shame those interactions aren’t more polished.

The hacking game, on the other hand, is a neat idea, and one that slides perfectly in to a narrative that requires you to exploit (or circumvent entirely) Union City’s borderline obsession of automation and AI. You use it to help the city’s AI do your biding – say, inverting the permissions of a door to open when your ID would typically lock you out, perhaps, or changing the route of a cleaning robot to aid in a rescue mission – and while the museum, particularly, outstayed its welcome with this mechanic, I can’t deny it’s not enjoyable… at least, when I finally figured out what I’m supposed to do, anyway.

Thankfully, Beyond a Steel Sky has a fabulous hint mechanic that drops a new clue every thirty seconds upon your request, starting with gentle tips and evidence that, eventually, become full blow-by-blow instructions. It’s a fantastic addition that should ensure you’ll never prematurely end a session simply because you don’t know what to do next.

And, oh, it’s beautiful here. Bright and bold and full of colour, Union City is a stunning backdrop to Foster’s story, and while there are perhaps fewer places than you might like to explore – you’ll revisit many places instead of visiting new ones – you can’t help but gaze up at the art deco motifs in awe. The Cel-shading isn’t as novel a style as it once was, of course, but Foster’s world is well-crafted and well-realised, ably accompanied by its score and good voice casting.

That said, it’s not faultless. NPCs slope by slowly and vacantly. Gang-gangs – the vicious wildlife often preventing you from simple tasks – slide across the ground, never mind the sky. Though admittedly amusing, it’s yet another indicator that perhaps another month or two of testing and polishing could’ve elevated Foster’s story from okay to outstanding.

Sadly, that’s not the only technical issue I encountered, either. There were plenty of quirks and glitches in my press build of Beyond a Steel Sky. Dialogue often stuttered or dropped out completely, and there was one instance where despite both the waypoint and Foster himself telling me I had completed the prerequisite investigation, it still wouldn’t give me the prompt to progress. Without a convenient save, I ended up losing several hours’ progress – which is a lot, given the game only lasts a dozen or so hours – by loading in a significantly older manual save. That time, I was able to proceed without a problem.

Which leads me to conclude that Beyond a Steel Sky is a pretty mixed bag, really. Despite lofty ambition, gorgeous visuals, and an intriguing premise, for every positive, there’s a negative, too. I loved Union City but couldn’t explore it as much as I wanted. I loved Foster’s sassy companion but found most characters a tad shallow, lacking nuance and personality. I loved digging into The Council but found hacking into MINOS a tedious, repetitive experience that rarely innovated.

That said, it’s an unhurried, intriguing adventure that will likely attract new fans as well as satisfy existing ones; it’s just such a shame it’s marred by uneven pacing, questionable UI choices, and just one too many performance issues.

And I’m still having nightmares about the Spankles clown.
