There was just something strange about Luffy. Sabo couldn't fathom being half the happy-go-lucky idiot Luffy was, but at least that made sense.
Sabo couldn't explain the way Luffy looked at him sometimes. His eyes would just randomly go wide, then his mouth would tick up in an unwarranted smile, and for a second he'd just stare, then he'd blink and his face would relax before going back to what he was doing. Sabo thought this was a greeting or something.
Then, after a particularly long period of staring, Luffy collapsed. Sabo rushed over to see what happened, and Luffy startled the second he saw him. "Sabo! When'd you get here?" He asked cheerfully as he sat up.
Sabo paused. Luffy just kept talking. "--And then after that I found these ants and--"
"--You saw me already." The blonde stated, and Luffy blinked from where he sat on the ground. "You were looking at me before."
Luffy tilted his head to the side with a dramatic pout. "Hmmmmm, nope! Sabo's been gone all morning! I was going to Gray Terminal to look for you but then the river and the ants and--"
"Luffy." Sabo bit. "Don't lie to me."
"I didn't though! You must be good at hiding!" He said with a nod before shifting to stand.
"Really? Then who was looking at me with your eyes?" Sabo said accusatively, crossing his arms with a deep frown.
But Luffy froze. Froze for four whole seconds, just long enough to turn Sabo's frustration to confusion. "It wasn't me, it was the other thing." Luffy said, sounding completely serious.
A chill ran down the blonde's spine. "What… Other thing?" He asked, his tone just barely shifting.
Luffy finally stood, and met his eyes before smiling. Then he shook his head and crossed his arms. "Dunno, a cloud I think - but it laughs a lot which is weird because it doesn't have a mouth.
Oh - Sabo consoled himself - Just some imaginary friend.
"Okay, Luffy." Sabo sighed, determined to let it go. He just started walking back to the treehouse.
Then he felt a tug on his sleeve, and turned to see Luffy looking much more serious than he ever had. "Don't talk to it, just because it's smiling doesn't mean it's nice."
Sabo paused, before rolling his eyes. "Yeah, okay Luffy, you can have your cloud man all to yourself, okay? Just don't put the ants in your pockets again." He said dryly before walking away, ignoring the sweat on his palms and the itching sense of urgency in his steps.
Just an imaginary friend.
Just a weird way of greeting someone.
Just Luffy being Luffy.
Sabo kept his eyes down.
