Concept: Love-Rivals to Rival-Lovers

Picture if you will, a classic ‘jealous rival to a blossoming love story’ situation:

Two characters, let’s call them ‘Ari’ and ‘Beth’ respectively, have been steadily and ever more rapidly falling in love and may have even become a couple outright at this point. However, we are not following either of these two.

We are instead following a third character, who we shall refer to as ‘Chloe’, who has both massive unrequited feelings for Ari, and by extension a seething jealously towards Beth. Thusly, Chloe is obsessed with breaking up the new couple so that she might have Ari all to herself.

However, in the midst of her ‘observing’ (stalking) of Ari and Beth, Chloe is shocked to suddenly bump into someone else ‘observing’ the pair.

Enter a fourth character, whom we’ll be calling ‘Dana’, who it turns out has both massive unrequited feelings for Beth, and by extension a seething jealousy towards Ari. And is thusly obsessed with breaking up the new couple so that she might have Beth all to herself.

Now at first, Chloe and Dana basically hate each other, what with each of them hating the one the other is so obsessively in love with, ie; Chloe constantly shit-talks Beth, which massively pisses off Dana, and Dana in turn constantly shit-talks Ari, which massively pisses off Chloe. So it really doesn’t take long at all for these two to be at each other’s metaphorical and/or literal throats.

That being said, after a protracted bit of arguing/wrestling/sword-fighting/regular-fighting/mech-fighting (depending on the genre we’re in), Chloe and Dana each realize that they both actually want the same thing: Ari and Beth to be broken up.

Chloe might despise Beth, but does she really care about what happens to her once she gets Ari all to herself? Likewise, Dana might despise Ari, but does she really care about what happens to her once she gets Beth all to herself? And it doesn’t hurt that Chloe and Dana find themselves relating pretty easily to each other’s situation. As well as a grudging yet growing respect for the other’s passion, skill and tenacity. Not to mention good looks…

Thusly, Chloe and Dana strike up a… partnership. Together, they will conspire to break up Ari and Beth so that each of them can have the object of her desire all to herself. After all, they are each just SO smart and capable alone. Working together, it’ll be easy to get what they want! Then they can just go their separate ways.

Of course, it certainly would be inconvenient if in the midst of their long-running Team Rocket-esque scheming and shenanigans, Chloe and Dana were to, oh I don’t know… catch feelings for each other.

That sure would make things awkward, wouldn’t it?

So Chloe and Dana totally catch feelings for each other and they’re SUPER in denial about it in a very ‘this is definitely a fake-relationship’ kind of way. Heck, maybe they actually DO start a fake-relationship as a cover. No way that could lead to something, right? All those dates and late nights together, it’s all just a cover for their scheming and plotting… which they spend maybe a quarter of the time doing. And all the cuddling/making-out/having-sex, that’s totally just ‘practice’ for when each of them gets who they really want. Nothing to see here.

Oh, and when Chloe and Dana are JUST about ready to finally talk about these totally-non-existent feelings that they totally don’t have for each other?

Yeah, that’s when Ari and Beth have a big, dramatic third-act breakup.

All of a sudden, opportunity has been dropped RIGHT into Chloe’s and Dana’s laps for PRECISELY what they (supposedly) wanted from the very start. The chance to be the rebound for the one they (supposedly) are really in love with. Maybe it’s best to let these other, more complicated feelings go, right?

Except then Ari tries rebounding on DANA, and Beth tries rebounding on CHLOE.

Turns out those two had some secret, unrequited feelings of their own.

And so, things only get more complicated/messy/weird/fun from there XD
