Here's a huge factory making plastic out of the fossil fuel, petroleum. My friends and I are in the foreground but you can hardly see us because we are tiny in comparison to all the ships, tanks and flare-stacks of the factory. CORONAVIRUS CAGE, Face Cover, 2020 - WHAT HAVE WE DONE? COLLECTION

Materials: Surgical face masks, Recycled plastic and Cotton threads.

This piece is about the extinction of animals due to plastic pollution. This is highlighted by the slogans used. Humans are replacing animals due to wreckless consumer behaviour. Another point is that, the box shape is a shield that protects our own lives but is also a prison cell in which we encase ourselves. It is like a cage for us.

I am a Vietnamese contemporary jewellery designer who is passionate about waste. I use recycled materials to make quirky, beautiful jewellery. Rather than making jewellery that effectively creates additional waste I prefer to use bioplastic and also bio waste such as used tea leaves in my work.

People are aware of plastic pollution but can be easily distracted. PPE is a good example where people think about saving human life by wearing protective face covers or gloves but then discard them without a second thought.

I like my work to be thought provoking and challenging. I also want my work to stimulate feelings and emotions around the damage that is being done to humankind by discarded plastic waste as well as clinical waste.

To make people more aware of the impact of PPE and also other kinds of plastic, I created a jewellery collection named WHAT HAVE WE DONE?

Through my collection which is bold and shows the association of death by plastic of sea creatures, I hope people can see it as thought provoking and also a challenge to consumer behavior.

As we know plastic does not easily biodegrade. Today’s discarded plastic including PPE is tomorrow’s fossilised remains.

CRIMINAL’S HAND 1, Necklace, 2020 - WHAT HAVE WE DONE? COLLECTION

Materials: A latex glove, Recycled plastic, Bioplastic, Food colouring, Tea leaves and Cotton threads.

This necklace represents a human hand that is inadvertently killing a sea house. Overuse of gloves to protect ourselves is affecting animal life in a negative way. How the necklace is worn somehow shows that we are killing ourselves too because of our consumer behaviour.

CORONAVIRUS LIFE RING, Necklace, 2020 - WHAT HAVE WE DONE? COLLECTION

Materials: Surgical face masks, Recycled plastic, Bioplastic, Food colouring, Tea leaves and Cotton threads.

This piece represents 5 plastic gyres in the world’s oceans. They also show that they contain a lot of plastic not only floating outside but also sunk below the surface. The skeletons which are sewed on to the edges of the masks show the dead animals were trying to escape from the gyres. It’s again a metaphorical reference about they animals being literally on the edge of extinction.

This piece shows the impact of not only PPE but also the problem of how plastic breaks down into micro pieces that are then found inside the animal. The appearance of the piece looks like a bulletproof vest or a life vest and is a metaphor showing how people use face masks to protect human life but at the cost other animals lives.
