(1963-1973)
The Porsche 911 was developed as a more powerful, larger, and more comfortable replacement for the 356, the company’s first model. The new car made its public debut at the 1963 Frankfurt Motor Show
Early 911s used two-liter engines with as little as 130bhp. Both engine sizes and power outputs swelled over the next decade. The car had four seats although the rear seats were small, thus it is usually called a 2+2 rather than a four-seater.
Production began in September 1964, with the first 911s exported to the US in February 1965.
In 1966, Porsche introduced the more powerful 911S with a Type 901/02 engine having a power output of 160 PS (120 kW; 160 hp). Forged aluminum alloy wheels from Fuchsfelge, with a 5-spoke design, were offered for the first time.
In August 1967, the A series went into production with dual brake circuits and widened wheels and the previously standard gasoline-burning heater became optional.
The Targa version had a stainless steel-clad roll bar. Its name came from the Targa Florio sports car road race in Sicily, Italy in which Porsche had several victories.
The 110 PS (81 kW; 110 hp) 911T was launched in 1967 with a Type 901/03 engine.
The 130 PS (96 kW; 130 hp) model was renamed the 911L with Type 901/06 engine and ventilated front disc brakes.
The 911R with 901/22 engine had a limited production (20 in all), as this was a lightweight racing version with thin fiberglass reinforced plastic doors, a magnesium crankcase, twin overhead camshafts, and a power output of 210 PS (150 kW; 210 hp).
The B series went into production in August 1968, replacing the 911L model with 911E with fuel injection.
The C series was introduced in August 1969.
From 1970 to 1971 there was a big change, the capacity increased to 2.2 liters for T, E and S (now 123, 153 and 178bhp).
In 1972-73 T, E and S switched to 2.4 liters (128, 163, 187bhp). Horn grilles beneath headlamps turn black for ’72. 207bhp Carrera RS 2.7 homo special lands for ’73, but only in Europe.
(1973-1989)
With the arrival of the G model, there was a discernible difference in styling and tech.
The G-Series debuted in 1973 and was replaced in 1989.
From 1974 to 1976 range simplified to 911 (148bhp) 911 S (173bhp) and Carrera (207bhp), all with 2.7 engines. Carrera switches to 200hp 3.0 for ’76.
From 1977 to 1983 All models except Turbo were replaced by 178bhp SC (boosted to 201bhp in ‘80). The first true Cabrio 911 appeared in late 1982.
Turbocharged 3.0 six’s 256bhp pushes the 911 into supercar territory.
In 1987-88 444hp 959 features a twin-turbo flat-six, with water-cooled heads, computer-controlled chassis, and four-wheel drive. Top speed: 197mph. 961 is 959 modified for competition.
(1989-1994)
In 1989 the 911 underwent a major evolution with the introduction of Type 964.
The 964 model was 85 percent new. The four-wheel-drive arrived for the first time, as did other tech improvements like power steering, ABS brakes, and airbags.
964 RS had new smooth bumpers and a retractable spoiler.
Turbo is back for ’91 with 320hp 33; became 355bhp 3.6 Turbo for ’93 (379hp for 3.6 Turbo S).
(1994-1998)
The 993 was presented just five years after the 964 and is still regarded by many Porsche enthusiasts as the best-looking model.
It was the last 911 with an air-cooled engine.
Curvy shell was a change for 911 design but the real breakthrough was a new multi-link rear suspension, opt four-wheel-drive system. 268bhp from 3.6 boosted to 281bhp.

So, my fellow Porsche and specifically 911 drooling enthusiasts, just what is in a name? Have you ever wondered how that spiffy little bullet of class came to get named 911? Well, first, I can tell you it was long before there were any sad attachments to the 911 designation and has nothing to do with 9-1-1, though you might need emergency help if you do not strap in and hang on in this zippy little ball of fun.
There were some haggles and changes that took place along the path to production and release of the then newest model in the 1963 Porsche line-up. As in all things Porsche, flexibility and adaptability were key along with a fair dose of practical in how the legendary 911 got its moniker.
The powers that be (as in were) at Porsche 1963 decided to introduce a new model based on the previous Model 356. It had a similar fastback and made use of a rear engine flat six that was air-cooled. Targeting the high performance market, Porsche AG of Stuttgart was stoked about adding a six-cylinder model to the line that would crank out 130 mph.  They knew the new design built with a stronger engine for performance would be a hit, especially with newly designed suspension and improved ride.  Being built at the Wolfsburg Volkswagen plant, which had never produced a Porsche or a 900-series car before, the practical Deutsch thing to do was name the new car “901”. The new Porsche 901 was the wow of the 1964 Paris Auto Show…that is, until Peugeot got wind of it.
It seems Peugeot, a French automaker (are they still making cars? You never see one here, except on a flatbed…) claimed there was a trademark infringement as they had “reserved” all 900-series numbers (turns out they claimed any 3-digit number with a zero in the middle) for their car lines. The interesting thing was there was no filed trademark for the 901 designation or any 9-zero-anything, but hey, they squawked anyway. Porsche was already mid-production and changing their name and vehicle labeling was going to be a pain. Again steps in German practicality.
Porsche planned to have the 901 in gold lettering on the dash glove box and on the rear end. They already had all the “9”s and “1”s, and rather than face a lengthy, messy legal squabble with their Francophile neighbors, they did the most practical thing – used the materials they had, making a “911”.  The rest, as they say, is history. You can now get a new 911 in a mind boggling twenty configurations.
In fairness to Peugeot, they are still producing cars, even though their early days included many things ranging from steel rods and coffee grinders to bicycles. They never did build a street drivable car with the 9-0-something designation. In 1990 they built a 905, and in 2011 a 908. Both are prototypes for LeMans Racing. They continue to push Porsche to build better and better track and LeMans type racing vehicles, and are strong competitors worldwide.
As for Neunelf, that is the German “syllabic” word for 911. Nine-eleven. Porsche 911 enthusiasts around the world are affectionately referred to as “Neunelfers” by those jealous they don’t have a Porsche 911, too.

What Is the Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet?
The term cabriolet is French, and it was first used to designate a two-seat chariot driven by a single horse in the middle of the 18th century. A cabriolet was distinguished from other two-wheeled horse-drawn vehicles by the ability of its roof to fold back, allowing passengers to travel in the open air. The first convertibles were Cabriolets.
The new Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet, which lacks the horse but adds a couple of rear seats, is built on the same principles. The Cabriolet shares the same engine, transmission, tires, and brakes as the standard 911 Carrera, but how different is an open-top 911 from the coupe? I had the opportunity to drive through the small villages and rolling hills south of Porsche’s home in Stuttgart, and here’s what I learned about the differences between the convertible and hardtop.

The Pros and Cons of Buying a Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet
The Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet is an iconic sports car that has a sleek design and comes in some of the most luxurious colors. The downside to owning one, however, are they’re not very practical for people who need to carry more than two passengers or have children who will eventually outgrow backseat space – another downfall can be their high theft rate because these vehicles often get targeted by thieves due whose desirability means nothing less should do!
Price
The 911 Carrera is not a cheap automobile, with a starting price of $98,750 and a significant price increase for the Cabriolet. It starts at $111,550, a $12,800 premium over a comparable coupe. What’s interesting to see is how Porsche’s pricing for the 911 coupe and convertible compares to the 718 Boxster and Cayman.
The open-air 718 Boxster is mechanically identical to the 718 Cayman, simply with a folding fabric roof, as is the case with the hardtop and convertible variants of the 911. A base convertible costs only 3.6 percent more than a base coupe in the 718, at $60,250 against $58,150. The 911, on the other hand, will set you back a lot more for an open-air drive. The price of a Carrera Cabriolet is 13% higher than that of a regular Carrera.
Looks
These are all personal preferences, but I’ve always despised the way convertible 911s look. When the back of a convertible is taller than the front, it doesn’t look good to me, and the 911 Cab may be the greatest offender. The 992 cabriolet’s rear end not only sits higher than the base of the windshield but also has wider hips and a lot of visible mass under its full-width back taillight. It appears to be some kind of bulbous, ass-heavy insect, and I’m not interested.
Sounds
Do you know how you’ll roll down your windows to listen to your car scream through a tunnel? It’s similar to driving a 911 Cabriolet with the top down but much better. The Carrera’s 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged flat-six creates a lot of noise, especially with the optional sports exhaust. Wind noise is more than in the coupe, which is to be expected.
Interior, Design, & Technology
The interior of the 911 Cabriolet is identical to that of the coupe, with the exception that the roof retracts hydraulically, allowing for some open-air enjoyment. The roof may be raised or lowered in 13 seconds by pressing a button on the center console, and it can be done while driving at speeds of up to 31 mph.
There’s also a wind deflector behind the front seats that does a fantastic job of preventing buffeting within the cabin at high speeds. Anyone sitting in a pre-facelift 991-generation car will recognize the cabin arrangement, which features a high dashboard and a cossetting center console that focuses on the driver. The material quality is outstanding, and there is a surprising amount of space for a sports car.
Efficiency
The coupe is the way to go if eking out the last fraction of a mile from every drop of petrol is your jam. The EPA hasn’t released its findings yet. However, the Cabriolet loses a little fuel economy based on the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC). How insignificant is it? The coupe gets 26.14 mpg while the Cabriolet gets 25.57 mpg after converting Porsche’s values from liters per kilometer to miles per gallon.
Safety
Porsches are not crash-tested by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration due to their low volume.
The 911 Carrera is equipped with six airbags, including two front airbags and two-piece side-impact airbags on each side. A torso airbag is activated by the seatback, while a head-protection airbag is activated by the door rather than the ceiling. This provides head protection to the Cabriolet variant, which is lacking in certain convertibles.
Speed And Acceleration
The coupe is a smidge faster at top speed and a smidge quicker to accelerate for the same reasons the 911 cabriolet is a smidge less efficient than the fixed-roof coupe (additional weight and impaired aerodynamics). According to Porsche, the coupe will reach 182 mph, but the convertible will only reach “barely” 180 mph.
The coupe beats the Cabriolet by 0.2 seconds in the sprint to 60 mph. The Carrera will reach 60 mph in 4.0 seconds, while the cabbie will take 4.2 seconds. The Sport Chrono kit reduces the 0-60 time of each car by 0.2 seconds.
Remember, though, that the impression of speed, not the speed itself, is one of the finest reasons to drive a convertible. The Carrera Cabriolet isn’t nearly as speedy as the coupe, but it feels just as thrilling with the wind in your hair and the engine note in your ears.
