My RamKing heart is full.
We didn’t get a “happy” ending, though I guess it depends on what you consider happy. But we got a realistic one and I always prefer those to the plaster-on-the-wound fix-it types.
I say “realistic” because they could easily have let the kiss(omg, those kisses!) be their “get together’ as happens a lot in BLs and even het romances. You know the ones: there’s some type of conflict, they part for a while, there’s excessive pining and then there’s a confrontation where a kiss happens and suddenly everything’s good again. The End. But that’s not what happened here.
As far as confessions go, this might be one of the best I’ve ever seen. There’s something holding King back from being with Ram (and we still don’t know what it is) but to hear him describe it as torture, having feelings for Ram and having to hold himself back when he’s around him, really put into perspective just how strong those feelings are, and how much it - and whatever’s stopping him from expressing it - hurts him. I don’t think I expected that from King. It’s easy to forget sometimes, because he talks so much, that King is as much of a mystery as Ram is. We really don’t know that much about him, especially his past. I know that [book spoiler] in the novel Ram had been hurt in the past and that’s why he was sort of closed off to strangers but I wonder if they’re transferring that storyline to King in the series. It would definitely make their situation interesting, especially since at this point it’s clear that Ram’s walls are down and his heart is bare. He’s not hiding or holding back, even if he hasn’t said the words. His eyes and actions have said enough(the hand on King’s face pulling him back for another kiss, ugh!).
I wasn’t surprised to see King panicking in the morning but it was a bit of a plot-twist when Ram pretended not to remember what happened...until he revealed that he did. I think he could see that King was freaking out and needed a bit more time, not to mention that unlike him King had been drunk and as a result a lot more loose-lipped and forward than he’d ever be while sober. But since King did remember, Ram had to let him know that while he’s letting him off the hook for now, they are going to eventually have that conversation.
Their straightforwardness is one of their best traits as a pairing and I hope that doesn’t change now. I’m praying that we’ll get to the bottom of King’s crisis early in S2 so that we can enjoy them being together for most of it(plus there are still other issues, like Ram’s dad’s infidelity). It’d suck if they dragged it out the entire season.
Now, I can’t end this without going back to the kiss. Given what we’d gotten from the other couples, and having seen Talay in this week’s YYY, I was a bit wary of what a RamKing kiss would look like. Boy, was I shocked and delighted. A real kiss. I don’t usually care about kisses as I’m sadly too used to the wide-eyed lip-press/side-mouth that passes for kissing. If you’re going to kiss, then kiss and they did! But what I liked most about the kiss is that I could see and feel the torture that King spoke about. He didn’t kiss Ram because he was drunk or because he just really wanted to kiss him in that moment. He kissed him because he couldn’t hold it in anymore. Imagine looking agonized while kissing the guy you’ve been yearning for. And to top it all off, Ram kissed him back. He kissed him, gently framed his face with his hands(which we rarely get in BLs) and then pulled him back for more, as if he was saying “you’re not alone in this”. I couldn’t have asked for a better kiss for them and I can’t imagine anyone but Perth and Talay and their amazing chemistry bringing RamKing to life.
PS: I forgot to mention the passion you could see and feel in the kiss. I've seen a fair numbers of BL kisses where they get down and dirty but it comes off more like they're putting on a show to say "Look at, us, we're really going at it. We're not like those other lame BLs" and while it might look good, oftentimes it feels empty and inauthentic. With Ramking, it felt raw and almost like King wanted to devour Ram and would have if not for that thing that's holding him back. I don't know how to describe the feeling I got, like he let the dam burst but was still restraining himself at the same time. And Ram received his torrent of emotion and returned it with his own calm fire, sort of like a balm to soothe King because he was clearly spiralling in the moment. Like I said above, he didn't kiss him because he wanted to, he did it because he couldn't stop himself this time. King, God King, who always has the answer or the best advice or a solution, lost control.
Anyway I'm going to stop now. I swear I could just go on and on about these two. They made the entire series for me.
