XLII. Dunkirk

The honeymoon was spent at Kaiservilla in Bad Ischl, Upper Austria with the permission of both Archduke Markus of Austria and Princess Charlotte of Murat. Harry had hoped it would just be Isabella and him, but they were lucky to be alone half the time. Isabella's four ladies-in-waiting had tagged along on their honeymoon which shouldn't have annoyed Harry as much as it did.

But it didn't matter anyhow because the honeymoon was cut short when Isabella and Harry were asked to go to Canada for their 150th anniversary. It was the perfect trip to introduce the rest of the world to Isabella. When William and Kate married their first engagement was one in North America. Princess Christine and Princess Charlotte saw the Canadian engagement as a perfect one.

The press in North American had gone crazy noticing how Isabella had just gotten married and she was already representing the British Royal Family. It was the short visit but just enough to get the world talking about Isabella. The horrible articles written about Isabella in the past were now replaced with loving articles about her royal presence. The thing everyone loved beside the innocent personality, blonde hair, and the sweet smile was her accent.  

To the press, Isabella really was another Diana. The blonde hair and shy smile had sealed the deal with them. Of course, no one, not even Harry, knew that Isabella was told to practice the same smile Diana had. But the accent, that was different, and had Isabella spoke with an English accent they would have called her another English rose. But the mixture of a French and German accent made her unique.  

The accent is what made everyone have to listen closely. Harry could understand her but with the press and other people, it was like Isabella made her accent thicker so they couldn't understand her. Shortly after the visit to Canada Isabella had officially moved in with Harry, but with separate rooms. Nottingham Cottage was not something Princess Christine and Princess Charlotte would have accepted for Isabella. They would’ve wanted Buckingham Palace, maybe even Kensington Palace.

Several days after returning from Canada, Harry and Isabella had been asked to be a part of the Spanish State Visit to the United Kingdom. Harry was told since Isabella knew Spanish fluently and was well acquainted with the Spanish Royal Family since birth their involvement would be needed. It would the first State Visit Harry would take part in. 

The people behind the scenes viewed Isabella as a tool they could use with other European Royal Families. They weren't wrong with that mindset because Isabella spoke Spanish to the Spanish King and Queen whenever she was around. Both the press and everyone else at the dinner loved that. Isabella had been respectful and known her place around both Queens. The other thing the press loved more was the tiara Isabella had chosen to wear for the State Dinner.

Queen Fabiola's Spanish Wedding Tiara. It had been known by several names, but Isabella simply had known is Queen Fabiola's Tiara. She had worn the tiara in the original form with aquamarine gems that looked as if they were diamonds. The tiara hadn't been seen in over a decade so it was a shock to most. Later on, Harry and Isabella received Commander by Number of the Order of Isabella the Catholic. King Felipe had even made a joke about Isabella receiving the Order of her ancestor and namesake Queen Isabella I of Castile.  

Isabella had been named after Queen Isabella of Castile because Isabella had been born on November 1, All Saints' Day which stems from a belief that there is a powerful spiritual bond between those in heaven and the living. More importantly, Isabella had been born on the day King Charles II of Spain had died and Habsburg rule over Spain had died with him. Her grandfather Archduke Carl Christian saw it as a sign that Habsburgs would somehow rule again.

The Order of Isabella the Catholic was a first for Harry as he never had an order. For Isabella, that had been her second as her uncle Henri, The Grand Duke of Luxembourg had given her the Grand Cross of the Order of Adolphe of Nassau on her wedding day. Coincidently, Adolphe was another one of Isabella's ancestors through her grandfather Jean. Isabella's highest honor was still the Luxembourg one seeing how that one was a Grand Cross and the Spanish one was a Commander by Number.

When it came time to go to Westminster Abbey, Harry and Isabella were given the task of escorting the Spanish King and Queen. During that time Isabella spoke mostly Spanish to the King and Queen which left Harry a bit humiliated. At Westminster Abbey, when walking around, it finally clicked in Isabella's mind that some of her ancestors were buried here. King George II of Great Britain; Elizabeth Stuart, Queen of Bohemia; Queen Mary of Scots, James I of England, and a high majority of Plantagenet Kings.

Later that night Isabella and Harry hosted a reception for Dunkirk veterans ahead of the “Dunkirk” World Premiere at Kensington Palace before attending the world premiere. Amongst the chaos Isabella and Harry had helped Jean, the former Grand Duke of Luxembourg get out of the car. Isabella had suggested they invite him and Harry didn't hesitate to say yes.  

Jean had been a complete surprise to the press and everyone attending. Isabella grandfather had worn his 1939-1945 Star awarded to subjects of the British Commonwealth for service in World War II. The 1939-1945 War Medal was awarded to subjects of the British Commonwealth who had served full-time in the Armed Forces. The third was the France and Germany Star given to subjects of the British Commonwealth who served in France, Belgium, Luxembourg, the Netherlands or Germany during World War II. The last was The Defence Medal awarded to subjects of the British Commonwealth for both non-operational military and certain types of civilian service during World War II.

The elder man had taken pride to being invited to Kensington Palace to talk with other World War Two veterans just a couple of hours earlier. Then to be invited to the premiere of Dunkirk was another gesture Jean would never forget. Harry found joy in hearing more stories about World War Two from Isabella's grandfather.

At the end of the night, once the chaos had died down Isabella and her grandfather had finally been able to sit down and talk, "Grandpapa, I love you and I love that you are here, but you cannot be flying at your age."

"I'm not dead yet Belle! I still have a few good years left in me before I drop dead. Besides, I haven't left London since your wedding," laughed Jean.

"You've been here 3 weeks? Why?"  

"You aren't my only grandchild in London."

"Oh, right Louis. Sometimes I forget he's here too and that’s because he was kind enough to let me live with him," smiled Isabella.

"Gabriel is my first great-grandchild and it's been nice to spend some time with them. Since Tessy and Louis split things have been rough for them."

"It's been over 7 months. How much more times does he need? After the lies, she and her friends told about Louis' mother I lost most of my respect for that woman. The only respect I have for her is that fact that she's Gabriel and Noah mother," said Isabella in slight anger.

"I understand you are protective of your aunt, but you have to also understand Tessy and Louis were never meant for each other."

"Because it wasn't an arrange marriage like your marriage or mine?" Asked Isabella.

"I became happy and so will you. Louis was always brash but Maria Laura might balance him out."

"Maria Laura? Of Belgium? Did you set them up?" Jean had let out a small laugh and continued to ignore her granddaughter. Isabella asked several more questions only to be ignored which had caused Harry to laugh, "Don't laugh at me your red baboon! Did you know anything about this?"

"How am I supposed to know anything about your cousin? I swear this is the first time I'm hearing about this."

"I swear if I hear more of this arranged stuff it will send me to an early grave," said Isabella.

"Drop me off with Louis," interrupted Jean.

Once the night came to a close Harry watched as Isabella went into the second bedroom of Nottingham Cottage. Every night since their wedding night they had slept in separate rooms. For the following days, Harry had charity polo matches to attend and Isabella was expected to be with him, but she would have her own engagements to go to. Since Isabella's first engagement at the 150th anniversary of Canada Isabella had spent her days meeting with her team and finding charities for Isabella to be a patron of. Even when Harry had nothing planned, Isabella did so he barely saw her. It was like that for the rest of July.

The goal horn went off. Streamers fell from the ceiling. For the first time, the first time since Shawn Bates, there was something to celebrate.

When John Tavares, “JT”, was drafted, it seemed to be a change. It was meaningfully something else, because it was a meaningful chance at a number-one player. A top prospect. A generational talent, or something like it. This was not a repetition of the Yashin trade, or DiPietro going first overall and ending up on a Bobby Bonilla buyout after breaking enough bones for an entire team. Tavares was a guarantee, a promise, was the cup coming back to Long Island.

Despite the name, the Islanders are not a New York team, much like the Mets. The Yankees are global, are a name of note like Manchester United and FC Barcelona and the Montreal Canadiens and the Pittsburgh Steelers, but there is a certain singularity to them as emblematic of New York, a city of the World, a continually reterritorialized and renewed space subject to more interpretations than interpreters, overcoded by more layers of the hyperreal than even Los Angeles. Los Angeles is a city that was created as a simulacra, is constituted by it, while the “Real” New York has been found and lost so many times, in so many ways, that one begins to wonder if New Amsterdam is nothing more than a colonizing fiction. New York is profoundly violent, colonial, neoliberal, and yet represents decolonization, solidarity, radical potentiality in America like no other place. The singular event, the radical restructure of potentiality that came on 9/11, the Absolute Event contrasting with a decade of non-event after non-event, the hyperreal entirely preempting the Real, making the Real a mere artifact, creates a sense of that which New York is. New York is the Yankees, perhaps with the exception of the Cocaine Mets and Piazza’s home run of a return in September 2001. The Islanders logo does not include Brooklyn or Queens, leading to a strange circumstance when they relocated to Brooklyn and retained a logo with a vital visual cue toward their now-abandoned arena. The Rangers are a New York team. The Islanders, even in Brooklyn, have always been on the Island.

This has been part of what has made them lesser, subjected them as a franchise to an Oedipal act of naming, reduced rooting for them to an exercise in Oedipal trauma. The Islanders have always been an incredibly Oedipal team, an expansion in a market already saturated by the Rangers. They are caught in the past because they have been a team of the future for twenty-five years. Their rivals are an Original Six franchise, a cornerstone of the NHL and whichever of the Flyers, Penguins, or Devils are closest to them at the standings. The Penguins always presented a certain special opposition: a player can get traded, sign with another team, retire, but your hatred of Crosby can’t. So, getting a jersey that says CROSBY SUCKS over an 87 is like wearing the number of a retired player, guaranteed to last as long as the jersey itself. The Islanders have been continually proving themselves to be good, but not nearly good enough. Wild card appearances, lucky playoff spots, and shining moments isolated from crushing defeats have been their historic moments.

This was true for a long time, and it was no less true for JT. With the Islanders, Tavares missed an Art Ross by the luck of a secondary assist, finished as a nominee for a Hart trophy, won only one playoff series. Immediately after that win the Islanders lost to the Tampa Bay Lightning, in part boosted by Victor Hedman, the Second Overall pick in JT’s draft and a cornerstone of a team that had been built around the rejected core of the Rangers repurposed into one of the best teams in the East. Hedman’s time with the Lightning has been relatively successful, about as good as one can get without winning the cup and with plenty more chances at one to come. JT, however, was marked to achieve individual success in service of a team that could do nothing for him. So long as the assemblage of the team around him remained as awful as it had been, as awful as management allowed it to be, he was part of that Oedipal prophecy, doomed to find himself named as lacking, wanting, lesser so long as he tried to make the team better. And so, on July 1st, he left.

When announcing the decision, JT tweeted out a picture of himself with a Star Wars alarm clock above his head, sleeping in Maple Leafs bedding. A starfighter from Naboo, to be specific, a mark of a certain sort of childhood at a certain point in time drawn from a certain product of consumption held in stasis by the photograph. When asked, the story was that he had a hockey tournament beginning early the next day, and had been so scared that his parents’ alarms would fail to go off that he insisted on setting his own as well. He said that it was a “childhood dream” and indeed, it seems, he is living out a dream of childhood. His regression into this childlike state, the way in which it has been rendered the image of note in JT’s decision, is in part a sort of Oedipal turn on the part of the Leafs: they are asserting themselves as Canada’s Team, as the team so many NHL players grew up rooting for, as the one that will eventually see Toronto’s players taking pay cuts to go home, become offhand references in Drake songs that the NHL’s snow-white fans could take or leave, positioning themselves as having preempted the NHL itself, married the mother of the Hockey Goddess, skinny and blonde like any NHL player’s girlfriend. Now, Toronto is a destination, is built on something far more than hope, a culture of accepting losing so long as the brand stays strong. Two years earlier, Stephen Stamkos had been in a similar situation, a young superstar from Toronto at the end of his contract, with Toronto a possible destination. When, after two stunning trades involving Canadian teams, Stamkos quietly re-signed with the Lightning around the end of the work day, it turned TSN into a kind of Winter Palace, a player firmly Canadian resolving to stay on a team that rejected all sense of what it meant to be a hockey team, a team with postmodern aesthetics and a young history whose peak involved stealing a cup from a Canadian team.

Even as the talks went on, JT was coming back. He always was, he was going to stay on the Island. He had been talking to the team all season, sources said. He declined a trade, wanting to stay with the team. He said he was waiting for the Islander’s arena situation to settle, and it did for at least a moment. Josh Bailey, an aging player made All-Star by being on JT’s wing, was given a generous contract as a sign of good will, a kind of fetishistic representation of the deference Tavares would be given in shaping the team. Two head coaches were let go over two seasons, replaced by a man less than a month removed from a Stanley Cup win, and a backup goalie turned GM was replaced by one of the best-regarded GMs in league history, a GM who had lead the Devils to multiple cups while the Islanders were helmed by a TV broadcaster who once beat a fan with his own shoe and an owner who freely offered friends the world, while actually owning all but nothing. The continual cycle of collapse was over, but it was far too late to keep him. What is it that a lover wants from infidelity? A confirmation of a certain sort. That there has been a consummation, generally a penetrative act, which serves to signify a certain flow within the relationship, within the potential of the relationship, such that the previous modality of relating is unviable. Cheating to force a break, as part of an act of justifying leaving, is in that way an embodiment of both partners' desires: the phallogocentric signification of this break is merely an expression of the underlying tension, the Oedipal burden of a relationship, the means by which the relationship is held as an object of uncertain structure. A radical break, the decision to not request a trade, to actively ask to stay with the Islanders, followed by the turn to the Leafs, the acceptance of a new contract, was a confirmation of what was already clear: an apparently new team was not enough to create a new situation, for him to repeat a mistake he had already made in taking an incredibly team-friendly contract and staying with the Islanders so many years previously. He would not allow himself to owe anything to the ideology of a few capitalists over a sweater, especially when he preferred a different sweater. Rooting for laundry being what it is, he decided he may as well sleep in his childhood sheets again.

LeBron went on the same day, of course. July 1st, he went home. Or at least, to one of his homes, not the one back in Akron. This was not the first time he left the Cavaliers, but this has a certain difference to it, one that resembles Tavares signing such a large contract with Toronto far more than it does LeBron’s original move to South Beach. The Lakers were a decent team with some promising players, who have to now deal with the fact that their entire team history has, effectively, become part of this signing. LeBron is perhaps the greatest player of all time, and is not staging a comeback like Jordan’s time with the Wizards. Instead, having just dragged an atrocious Cavaliers team to a Finals where they were comprehensively outmatched by the Warriors for all but half of a game, he decided that he wanted something different. LeBron had already gone home once, returning from Miami to lead Cleveland to four consecutive Finals appearances, including the most unlikely Championship in NBA history. Still able to compete, still showing himself more and more to be the Greatest of All Time, he decided to create the ultimate destination team, the team that best fits Los Angeles. They have had good teams before, but the singularity of LeBron in LA exceeds even that of the Warriors, is a simulacra of a team that many would not have dreamt of a decade prior.

For obvious reasons, there is quite a bit more attention given to LeBron going to LA than to Tavares going to Toronto. Both in North America and around the world, basketball resonates in a fashion that nears that of soccer, that represents the complexity of late capitalist signification in post-socialist Europe, balkanization and basketball two expressions of a singular neoliberal hegemon, American culture as global culture. The NHL’s Hockey, meanwhile, is a game of the Global North: on the borders of The Orient one finds the KHL and national teams far more appealing, while in Europe most nations give at least some prestige to their own leagues alongside the NHL. The NHL is international, surely, but not in the same fashion as the NBA. The NHL operates far more locally, much like the Islanders within it. “On the Island” is a tell, a kind of shibboleth for Long Island life: anyone from Long Island knows that while one can be “in” Nassau or Suffolk, Hempstead or Huntington, in a bar or in a bind, one is always “on” Long Island. The transition from being in Queens to being on Long Island is about where the Islanders have planted their new home, and it was in the continual confusion over the exact term, the insistence of speaking of Long Island incorrectly that the uniqueness, the small-market quality of the Islanders became clear yet again. The Islanders had survived so many things, survived even more while holding on to JT, and just as a future seemed to form, it finally became clear that nearly a decade of thrashing for relevance and flaming out, a rocky road that often pointed toward Kansas City or Quebec, had shaken JT off. Spending so much time trying to find a reason for him to stay had been the exact reason he left: if the Islanders had truly wanted him, they would have changed when they said they would, would not have wasted some of his best years on basement teams.

It is not a decade unmarked by success, but punctuated instead by a singular one: John Tavares wrapping an OT game-winner around on Roberto Luongo, a former Islander himself, to win the Islanders’ first playoff series in 23 years. He would not win another: the next round was a 4-1 defeat against the Lightning, and the next two seasons saw the Islanders fail to make the playoffs as his contract ran out. Perhaps he genuinely wanted to stay as much as he said, perhaps he is merely a better actor than he was previously credited as. Maybe he is something different from either of these fantasies of him. Whichever it is, he is no longer an Islander.

The current movement for people to accept their bodies as they are is a well meaning movement however it is also completely ok to want to aim for better if you know that it can be part of your destiny to achieve a certain body goal andor fitness goal, regardless of the weather try to walk a certain amount if you know that it has worked for you before even if the weather tempts you towards something different if you need something more than just getting to a bodyweight goal quicker to motivate you think of how easier it would be for you to be able to hear your intuition the more you commit doing what has previously helped you

This is a slight repeat from previous messages however strive to make time at least 30 minutes each day to look at an offline andor online news source pertaining to the norfolk virginia area, virginia beach virginia andor portsmouth virginia areas if you are 100 percent certain that you intend to reside in this area for the rest of your current earth lifetime, It has been already at least 2 months andor longer that at least 43 of the men and women I Blueberry Cloud have implemented that idea and all of them are experiencing some type of miracle andor happy event pertaining to their career andor money goals, for instance one female visited a free event she saw featured in one of the online websites pertaining to this area and she made a strong spiritual connection with a platonic female friend also around her age who has been looking for a female friend like her also interested in residing in the same areas long term as her for over 12 years though she was far from certain if that was going to occur in this current earth lifetime until both of them met at the event, now on a weekly basis they attend a similar spiritual class together connecting with other like minded people receptive to their spiritual beliefs and personalities. A male that I Blueberry Cloud am helping is already very secure in his career and money life compared to the previous female I just mentioned however he was naturally looking for a more romantic connection than the previous female I just mentioned and to complicate matters he was a virginia transplant for the past 3 weeks and was still trying to find the best offline places to go to for an offline love connection however as all of his previous work history was private sector outside of the military he was open minded to having platonic female and male friends from military backgrounds however he secretly preferred a female his age who had non-existent prior military experience and finding one like this was a situation that he thought was going to be like a needle in a haystack until he saw one of his former female coworkers featured on tv who was prior navy military 40s something female and previously worked for him helping out an older female coworker around his age set up food who he recognized right away from 20 years before because they both grew up in the same hometown and he heard through mutual friends some of the career paths she had taken that were clearly outside the military united states navy arena, however he wanted to prevent coming on to strong to this older female around his age and the prior navy female who worked for him well the last time they had seen each other in person was over a year ago in addition to their most recent online communication. Before you ask an olive branch was far from extended between the two however the former boss of the prior navy 40s something female diplomatically asked to talk to the former 40 something female coworker through a mutual person connected to both of them in different ways and he was honest in why he was contacting her again. Fortunately by this time the prior navy female was in a more forgiving and forget type of personality especially because her career and money life were taking off in happier ways beyond her wildest dreams plus her newly thinner beautiful body was helping her get multiple lucrative career and money opportunities with ease and she explained to her former boss as good luck would have it that her older female coworker who lived for some time in the same hometown area as him was going to be at an event involving another coworker at a restaurant that was open to the general public the prior navy female even generously gave him the exact timeframe she was expected to meet her older female coworker and other friends and coworkers to give him the option of going there separately or with her and the mutual person that was a mediator between the prior navy female and her more experienced coworker career wise. It was agreed that he would go with his prior navy female coworker and the mutual mediator, the older female coworker who grew up in the same area as the prior navy female’s boss was there as expected and she was mutually just as happy to see him as he was her and you can pretty much guess the love romance connection from there between the older female in her late 50s and the male around a similar age in his late 50s or early 60s.

The return of coal mining at Cedar Mountain (aka West Coast Coal) was brought about by a mysterious figure. His name was John “Jack” McQuade. Are you ready for his story and a deeper investigation into his importance to the area?

My first clue about McQuade was in Edith Cavanaugh’s article in the 1961 Seattle Times called Lost Towns of King County; Busy Cedar Mountain only a memory. She told the reporter:

The mine experienced several shutdowns and was reopened about 1920, when John McQuade found the coal seams again. He leased the property to the Pacific Coast Coal Co., which sold to E.R. Peoples. The last operators were Ed Littlefield and his mother, who inherited the coal mine

When I read that I remember that early coal mine map of the Jones Slope. On that were two smaller shafts and penned in very small print along the shaft was “McQuade Slope”. It is bottom center on the map below.

This map was published in 1920 by Pacific Coast Coal Company (PCCC) when they first purchased the rights to the Indian Mine from the Jones Brothers and Cedar Mountain Coal Co from the Campion Family who managed the estate of John Colman. Funny how this little clue would drive me to dig even more into the what, why and how the mine was brought back from life support.

Of course I wanted to look for this clue to the past. I did find a sink hole on 194th Ave SE that I believe is the McQuade Slope mine shaft. Read more about that search and these mines at Link to article on #4 & #5 Cedar Mtn Mine Shafts

The second thing I read about McQuade was around the house he built in 1925 on the north side of the Jones Road Bridge on the Cedar River. It was built from very beautiful brick manufactured by the Denny Renton Clay Brick Company. How could he afford this mansion house was voiced in the 1970s? The mystery was thickening.

Here is that little scrap of info around the house & our Mystery Man. Bill at Palmer Coking Company sent me this inside a bunch of miscellaneous items around the New Black Diamond Coal Mine. Not till I moved to investigating the Cedar Mountain Coal Mines did this make any sense or became relevant.

Around the same time (1926) McQuade’s grown son Thomas bought property just to the west of the New Black Diamond Coal Mine (aka Indian). There he built a grocery with a house above it in anticipation of a town being built around the mine. This store still exists on the Maple Valley Renton Highway and is better known as the 76 Gas Station. Where did the money come from for that?

This all points to him buying and making a success of the mine across the river where a fault had caused closure in the 1890s. As a refresher see the map below. Are you following along and see where I am going? It is all about the question of when and how did McQuade’s finger cause the revitalization of the Cedar Mountain Coal Mines? Only a few clues exist around it. Time to dig deeper.

My research for any and all clues took over. That is right, another rabbit hole consumed Batgirl. This Cedar Mountain Coal Mine had so many players, locations and the data was all over the place.

Are you ready to get into the weeds? Meet the man of mystery! John “Jack” McQuade.

John McQuade

He was born in County Tyrone Ireland 10/14/1863. He immigrated in 1880 per bio from Issaquah Museum but the censuses and  his obituary in The Issaquah Press have different dates. Hard to tell which is the right date and from my research on my grandfather it is not uncommon in this period to have discrepancies. 

In May 1880 (substantiates earlier immigration date), his mining career started in New Castle, Pennsylvania as a miner.  Then he traveled to Canada and mined in Nanaimo BC. Back to the USA, he went to Butte MT in 1883 and next to Cedar Mountain, working for Colman in 1885. One has to assume this knowledge on the first Cedar Mountain slope/mine entrance brought him back again and again.

With his mining experience and the lure of something different he went to work on the Northern Pacific Railroad Stampede Tunnel in 1886. He must have been working at it from the beginning until the end. They started hand drilling it on February 13, 1886. Moved to air drills and the two tunnels met into one May of 1888. It opened soon thereafter.

McQuade came to Gilman/Issaquah in 1888 (per Bio on Issaquah Museum site). That corresponds with the tunnel’s completion. He married Margarette (Maggie) Lewis 3/15/1890 in Seattle. They had four sons; Thomas, Charles, John, and William and three daughters; Edith, Ethel and Margarette. 

Railroad service came to town in 1887 and the coal and lumber industry took off. Next the town was platted in 1888, and incorporated under the name Gilman in 1892. The townsfolks renamed the village to Issaquah in 1899. Our guy was in the middle of all this early history.

When the town was incorporated he was appointed the first Gilman Marshal in April 1892 and continued in that position until February 1898. I also found he was Deputy Sheriff for North Bend but no dates listed. He was next the Mayor from January thru April 1900. The census of 1900 captures him twice and adds a little spin to his mining experience.

First 1900 census in Gilman Town with wife & 4 kids – owned house outright on Front Street – listed as Marshal instead of Mayor– Bio states this is confusing & perhaps he was filling in.

Second count he is on the Passenger list of the Whaler Jeannie of San Francisco in Nome, AK.  A gold rush had occurred that year where you could pick nuggets off the beach. Bio states he went to Alaska to mine.  Could he have grabbed some of those nuggets?

Another confirmation of his Alaska adventures is I found him listed in Nome on the Alaska-Yukon Gold Rush Participants list compiled around 1899 – 1900. (also found two Jones Brothers and my Grandfather on this list)

More Census data I found:

Census 1910 – Issaquah with wife & 6 kids on Front Street – listed as miner. Looks like he was no longer in civic service but was full time into the mining scene. Not sure what mine though.

Census 1920 – Issaquah Town with wife & 5 kids on Front Street – listed as coal mine operator (Connect the McQuade Slope and Edith’s comments) Also said he immigrated to US in 1883 & naturalized in 1889.  Hmmm.. Does not agree with bio or 1930 census.  

Found that one of his Issaquah homes was saved and rebuilt at the Gilman Village Shopping Center.  They moved a lot of old structures to create an eclectic group of shops and stores.  My research on age and where it was originally located did not yield much info.

He took over Cedar Mtn Mine in 1926 according to his Bio and Obituary. Colman/Campion company was Cedar Mountain Coal Company. I believe this is when the revitalized portion of the mine was renamed West Coast Coal Company. 

He built his wonderful Brick House 1925 thru 1927 at 20005 SE Jones Road.

Census 1930 – Cedar Mountain Brick Home with wife & 2 kids – listed as mine operator. I had to manually find this census since this  page was torn & taped right over them.  Just to add to the confusion it had an 1878 immigration date.  

Died at Cedar Mountain Brick Home 6/24/1934. He is buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Renton, WA.

This brings us back to the mystery of what happened between 1920 and 1926? How did McQuade come to find the coal seam and own this valuable piece of property and lastly afford that expensive brick home?

Let us dissect these questions one at a time. Warning!! Some of this is my assumption and what I can glean from the documents and maps.

How did McQuade find the coal seam again?

Let us start with that 1920 coal mine map K_41A that documents the Jones Slope (Indian Mine) and two Cedar Mountain slopes. One of those slopes is named McQuade Slope and I have identified it is in the northeast corner of section 30. That puts it squarely inside the Cedar Mountain Coal Mine properties owned by Colman Estate administrated by Campion.

Pacific Coast Coal Company (PCCC) purchases the Coleman Estate ownership of the Cedar Mountain Coal Mine in Section 30 in 1920. This was at the same time as they acquired the Jones Brothers’ claims.

Why did they buy this property? It was because McQuade had proved there was coal beyond the pesky fault. That made the closed Cedar Mountain Coal Mine valuable again. PCCC was going to use that info to grow their New Black Diamond development in a hope that the Jones seam/slope continued towards the McQuade Slope.

How did John McQuade benefit from this rediscovering of the lost Cedar Mountain Coal Seam?

I am assuming that Campion the executer of the Colman Estate generously shared the bounty from the PCCC purchase with McQuade.

Perhaps there was a lease agreement between them like the Jones had on their property. Whichever, he found it and thus everyone connected got rich or richer.

How did McQuade come to own considerable property including the closed mine across the river (aka West Coast Coal Mine)?

I have only more questions and conjectures to answer this with. Did he finally spend gold nuggets he potentially found in Nome, Alaska? Or did he take the funds and relationships with the Colman Estate to make his dreams come true? I am betting on The Colman Estate funding his endeavors and a slim chance he still had gold left over from Nome.

Don’t think we will ever really know the money part unless I dig in archives. Unfortunately, they are at this point closed to the public. However, this is where old property maps come in. They will demonstrate how McQuade gambled by buying the properties with potential coal. Where the funding came from might be in debate but the ownerships are not fiction.

We start with the Anderson 1907 map of King County Township 23 North Range 6 East W.M.. Let us review several stakeholders in the area:

Cedar Mountain Coal Company (Colman’s mining group) can be seen in section 30. They owned the northern half plus the NW corner of the southern half.

J M Colman private holdings of the southern half of section 20.

Colman died 12/13/1906, so this and his coal company were all part of his estate in 1907. We know from the 1920 Seattle Times article about the New Black Diamond Mine that John T Campion was the executor of the Colman Estate. I also uncovered that Campion was the President of Cedar Mountain Coal Company in the State of WA Report of State Inspector of Coal Mines 1/1/1905 – 9/30/1906 Biennial Report Vol 5.

Samuel Blair (estate) was a large land owner in the areas around the Colman pieces. He held ownership in Sections 30 and 29. A piece of the section 29 property contains the large Cedar Mountain coal mine that is related to our mystery man McQuade. Over time this piece of Colman’s coal mines must have been sold to Blair and his family. Coincidentally, I think this is the same Samuel Blair who had large interests in the Seattle Coal & Transportation Company. Their prime mine was at Newcastle in the 1870s.

E. Grondahl owns a small piece between Cedar Mountain Coal & Blair in section 30.

Northwestern Improvement Company has land holdings in Section 29 around the large coal mine. That company was the Northern Pacific Railroad’s subsidiary that was set up to manage it’s land grants and other coal opportunity land purchases. They were developing coal for their own use and outside sales. The Federal government deeded certain amounts of alternating sections of public land for each mile of track that was built to encourage railroad development.

Next we have the 1912 map by Kroll which shows a few changes. Grondahl’s share of section 30 was bought up by Cedar Mountain Coal Company and Samuel Blair estate was settled and now owned by Abbie B Blair.

Lastly, this 1926 Metzker’s map below shows PCCC owns the old Cedar Mountain Coal Co (section 30) for it’s development of the New Black Diamond Coal Mine. Note that Lots 8, 9 & 10 of Section 19 is owned by PCCC and is where the major industrial complex is built.

To seal the deal on our mystery man’s rise to becoming a coal mine owner the map shows that McQuade has purchased the Blair & J.M. Coleman properties. Some of which have been added to a company called West Coast Coal Co. This includes the property where McQuade’s house is built in the southwest corner of section 20 on this map.

His coup d’état!!

What a man John McQuade must have been. I am not 100% sure of all the details but my research gave us good clues. Our man of mystery pulled off the gamble that he could find the coal again. Then he capitalized on that find to redevelop the original Cedar Mountain Coal Mine.

That is how the Cedar Mountain Coal Mine was resurrected.

Time to move on to my next article. We will follow the final batch of owners and a few other characters around Cedar Mountain Coal Mines. That will bring us to the conclusion my adventure and research on this coal mine with so many players and mine shafts.

Someone who lives a regular life (nothing exciting for the most part) gets involved in something that you really couldn't make up (well you could) but the story took on a life of its own. All because of a recorded phone call. This isn't a true story (could be) but I wonder how someone would handle a situation like this.

In Maine near the Quebec border, there are many individuals who are of French descent. Lucy Chebow-Dennis was no exception. Her grandparents were both French Canadians who came back in 1896 to the small Maine town of Frenchville (not an original name). Her mother Lillian Tremblay Chebow met Max Chebow in Quebec city when she was staying with her aunt. They got married and then Lillian went back to Maine to have Lucy. Shortly thereafter Max and Lillian got divorced.

Lucy spent part of her summers in Quebec City. She was fluent in both languages. Taking French in high school was an easy A as she would practice speaking French to her grandparents. Lillian was also fluent in French but only spoke it to her parents. She rarely spoke it in public unless it was a French visitor who was having difficulty speaking English.

After Lillian's divorce, she (Lillian) rarely went to church. Back in the mid 1960's, it was almost unheard of to get a divorce but Lillian was a free spirit who did what she wanted. Lillian had moved into a place of her own because she didn't want her parents forcing Lucy to go to church. Lucy was never baptized in the church as her parents had split shortly after she was born. They had a civil ceremony rather than a religious one. Because of the divorce, Lucy was denied entrance into the Catholic school which Lillian had no issue with. For her parents, especially her father, this was an embarrassment.

There was a private Episcopal school in a nearby town that Lucy went to from kindergarten to high School. She baptized when she was 16 years old. Lillian's father would have had a fit if he found out but he had died back in 1971 years before. He wasn't too thrilled about her not attending Catholic school but she had been banned from attending the school. The public school wasn't that great and the only other private school was the Holy Cross Episcopal School. Lucy's father paid for her education.

Max Chebow was Catholic in name only. He never was that religious although he attended Catholic school. Unlike Lillian, he suffered very little fall-out as the marriage had been a civil as opposed to religious ceremony. In 1970 he remarried and had 3 children. He did attend church at Christmas and Easter, a very large Cathedral in Quebec City. Even though he wasn't supposed to take communion, he did anyway and Lucy took communion as no one knew that she wasn't baptized in the Catholic Church. They would laugh about it. Her step-mother Maxine would just shake her head.

In 1985 Lillian's mother died. At that time she and Lucy were given permission to receive communion, something that they had been denied for a long time. By 1984 a lot of the old timers had passed and many in the community didn't know or care about the story about Lillian's divorce. Back in 1963, it had been the scandal of the decade.

In 1965 the majority of people that lived in the town were of French-Canadian ancestry. Most people spoke both French and English. In 2019, only about a quarter of the population was 100% French-Canadian. Most were a mixture of French and American ancestry. Only about 5% spoke French fluently and most of these individuals were 50 and older.

Lucy Chebow never left town after college. Many of her peers did moving to Augusta or Portland. She was an artist who made jewelry and had an art gallery downtown. She liked living in the small town. She was married to a man who died in Iraq during the first Gulf war in 1991. They had been married about 4 years. Shortly after he died, Lucy gave birth to a stillborn baby boy.

For a very long time, Lucy shut down and just functioned enough to get thru the day She never remarried. Then her mother died unexpectedly in 1995 at the age of 62 years old. She had her dad and step-mother which was what got her thru that bad period.

Now in 2019, her father had died at the age of 84. Max Chebow in life had been a race car driver and race car announcer for the Canadian racing series. Hundreds of people attended his funeral.

Bridget Ganyon was in attendance. She had been an exchange student and had lived with Lucy for a couple of years when she attended high school in Maine. She was 23 years old and Lucy hadn't seen her for a couple of years. She was a dancer who danced in music videos. Rumor mill had it that Bridget and Justin Green who was the same age were at item. They denied it. He was the son of heavy metal legend Roger Green. He wasn't at the funeral which didn't surprise Lucy. He didn't know Max Chebow.

A couple of months later

It was very late at night when Lucy received the call.

"Are you Lucy Chebow?" the voice said.

"Yes, I am. Who are you?"

"My name is Dr. Rick Monstermyer. I'm calling from Rapid City, South Dakota. This concerns Bridget Ganyon."

"Was she in an accident? Is she okay?"

"No, she wasn't in an accident but she was assaulted last night. She was found unconscious along the road by a state trooper. She will not tell us what happened? I think her boyfriend Justin Green assaulted her. Maybe it was the dad who attacked her Roger Green isn't the nicest person, you know."

"Why would Roger Green attack Bridget?"

"Well, who else would. You don't know this Roger Green character. Bad news. Has a history of verbal and physical abuse of women. Why would you think the son would be different. Bridget told me he didn't the news well when she broke up with him."

"Is this some type of crank calls, because it's isn't funny."

"No, it's not a crank call and no assaults on women aren't a laughing matter."

Lucy refused to give the doctor any medical history information because she knew that he already had that information. She was right and she couldn't believe that this doctor was telling her this. His response was Bridget Ganyone was French-Canadian and wasn't a US citizen so the HIPPA laws didn't apply.

The doctor ended up hanging up on her. Lucy tried to get in touch with Bridget but Bridget was totally out of it. The next morning Bridget was dead. Lucy literally fell to her knees and started sobbing.

Within an hour every news station in Maine and a few from Quebec City where at her doorstep. With 3 hours every major network was in town.

"I'm in total shock of Bridget's death. I don't know who harmed her. I really don't. "

Lucy finally had to disconnect the landline phone as it rang non-stop for hours. She had tried to call Maxine, her step-mom but couldn't get thru. Finally Maxine called. Lucy told her briefly what happened and then Judy told her that Bridget's only living relative, great aunt was in a nursing home and had been totally out of it for a couple of months.

The next day the Frenchville Police came and picked Lucy up and brought her to the station.

"Ms. Chebow has done nothing wrong. The Rapid City Police Department wishes to interview Lucy, so we are taking her to the station."

The interview lasted a couple of hours. Lucy was then taken back home. She couldn't sleep thinking about what this doctor had said. Roger Green was known to be a jerk and abusive as well. A friend of hers had been victim when she had asked for his autograph. He went on a verbal tirade, calling her names and then tried to punch her in the face. Lucy had witnessed this and at the time it shocked her. Her friend was in tears sobbing. Lucy never cared much for this guy prior to this incident and after that despised him.

His son Justin well that was a big question as she didn't really know him. She had met him months earlier when Bridget had house sat for her while she was in Quebec. She had come back a day earlier and Justin was mowing the lawn. They briefly spoke and he left shortly thereafter.

Lucy had told this to police. She had also told police that Bridget was afraid to end her relationship because he might get upset about it.

Maxine handled the funeral arrangements for Bridget as she knew her aunt. Both of them hoped that neither father or son would come to the funeral. The great aunt by this time was in a coma, so couldn't attend the funeral. She died a couple of hours after the funeral. Neither the father or son came to the funeral. The news crews were there but did maintain a respectful distance as requested by Judy and Lucy.

When Lucy pulled up in the driveway, the front door was kicked in and the house was ransacked. Lucy knew that this was going to happen. She had removed anything which would be damning. She had found a diary that Bridget had recently kept and she had read some of the content and it was very shocking.

The son had no romantic interest in Bridget. In general he had no romantic interests in girl and his father didn't want anyone to know this. He had girlfriends and pretended to have romantic interests in them but didn't. Roger and Bridget were having a fling and when Lucy read this, she was floored. No one suspected them because in public Bridget was seen with Justin. From what Lucy read, Justin hated his father and warned her to be careful if she broke off the relationship.

The diary was read after the police interview. When the house was ransacked, the diary fell behind a dresser drawer and wasn't noticed. Lucy saw it and picked it up right away.

This didn't prove or disprove who was responsible for Bridget's death. Roger Green had been in Canada hundreds of miles away when Bridget was attacked in South Dakota. He didn't kill her but what if he hired someone to do so? In the diary, Bridget said that he was furious and told her she would be very sorry that she broke up with him? Had he made good on his promise?

Another thing that really scared Lucy was that the doctor who called her died suddenly of a massive heart attack a couple of days after Bridget died. From all accounts, he was healthy. She wondered if Roger Green would try to kill or harm her as well by hiring someone to do the job.

Older Couples Are Increasingly Living Apart. Here’s Why

Three years ago, William Mamel climbed a ladder in Margaret Sheroff’s apartment and fixed a malfunctioning ceiling fan. “I love that you did this,” Sheroff exclaimed as he clambered back down.

Spontaneously, Mamel drew Sheroff to him and gave her a kiss. “I kind of surprised her. But she was open to it,” he remembered.

Since then, Mamel, 87, and Sheroff, 74, have become a deeply committed couple. “Most nights, I’ll have dinner with Marg and many nights I stay with her overnight,” Mamel explained.

And yet, despite the romance, these North Carolina seniors live in separate houses and don’t plan to move in together or marry. Demographers call this type of relationship “living apart together” (LAT).

“It’s a new, emerging form of family, especially among older adults, that’s on the rise,” said Laura Funk, an associate professor of sociology at the University of Manitoba in Canada who’s written about living apart together.

Questions abound about these unconventional couplings. What effects will they have on older adults’ health and well-being? Will children from previous marriages accept them? What will happen if one partner becomes seriously ill and needs caregiving?

Researchers are beginning to focus on these concerns, said Susan Brown, chair of the sociology department and co-director of the National Center for Family and Marriage Research at Bowling Green State University in Ohio. “It’s really remarkable that older adults are in the vanguard of family change,” she said.

How many older adults are in LAT relationships? According to a 2005 survey by the National Social Life, Health, and Aging Project, 7% of individuals between 57 and 85 years old described themselves as living apart together. (Some experts contend the measure used in this survey was too broad, allowing couples who are dating to be included.)

Last month, at the annual meeting of the Population Association of America in Denver, Huijing Wu, a graduate student in sociology at Bowling Green State University, presented an analysis of nearly 7,700 Wisconsin adults age 50 and older surveyed in 2011. Married couples accounted for 71.5% of that group, single people accounted for 20.5%, and people who were “partnered but unmarried” accounted for 8%.

Of the partnered group, 39% were in LAT relationships, according to a more focused definition of this arrangement, compared with 31% who were dating (a less committed, shorter-term relationship) and 30% who were cohabiting.

Jacquelyn Benson, an assistant professor of human development and family science at the University of Missouri, is among a handful of researchers who have studied the experiences of older people in LAT relationships. “Older adults really see this as a lifestyle choice, not a relationship of convenience,” she said.

Benson’s 2016 study of 25 older adults (from 60 to 88 years old) in LAT relationships found various motivations for these partnerships. Seniors wanted to have “intimate companionship” while maintaining their own homes, social circles, customary activities and finances, she discovered. Those who’d been divorced or in unhappy earlier marriages didn’t want to tie themselves down again and believed a degree of distance was preferable to day-to-day togetherness.

Also, several women who’d cared previously for sick parents or husbands wanted to avoid assuming caregiving responsibilities or the burden of running a household again.

“It’s a been-there-done-that attitude,” Brown explained. “I took care of my husband, I reared my children, and now it’s my time.”

Caregiving is a thorny issue, on multiple fronts. The only known study to look at caregiving in LAT relationships, out of the Netherlands, found that about half of partners planned to provide care, if needed — a sign of ambivalence. But when illness entered the picture, partners offered assistance nonetheless.

“People in LAT relationships forget there’s going to be this emotional entanglement and they won’t just be able to walk away,” Benson said.

Other complications can arise if adult children resent or fail to recognize their older parent’s outside-of-marriage relationship. “In some cases, when a partner wants to step in and have a say, they’ve been pushed out by family members,” Benson noted.

One older woman in her study learned that her partner had been placed in a nursing home by his family only when she couldn’t reach him at home anymore. “They didn’t include her in the conversation at all,” Benson said, “and she was pretty upset about it.”

Only a few studies have evaluated the quality of LAT relationships, which has implications for seniors’ well-being. One found that older adults in these relationships tend to be less happy and receive less support from partners than people who are married. Another, presented at last year’s Population Association of America meeting, found that the quality of LAT relationships isn’t as strong as it is for marriages.

That hasn’t been true for Luci Dannar, 90, who’s been involved with James Pastoret, 94, for almost seven years, after meeting him at a dance at a Columbia, Mo., senior center.

“The first feeling I had for Jim was sorrow because he seemed to be grieving from his wife’s death five months before,” said Dannar, whose husband and oldest daughter both passed away 19 years ago. “I thought maybe I could be helpful to this man because I’d been through those deaths.”

After getting to know Pastoret and realizing she liked him, Dannar laid down her terms. “I told him, I don’t ever want to get married and he said ‘I don’t either,’” she remembered. “And I said if you have a jealous bone in your body, don’t darken my door again. Because I lived 53 years with a jealous husband, and I never want to go through that again.”

Neither wanted to give up their apartments in a retirement community, about 300 steps from each other. “I like my independence,” said Pastoret, who taught in the school of natural resources at the University of Missouri for 33 years. “When I go home at night after supper with Lucy, I’m very happy to be by myself.”

“He comes over at 5 every evening and leaves here about 9, and then I have two hours by myself — my private time,” Dannar said. “We really like our space, our time alone, and we don’t need to be together 24 hours a day.”

Unlike some other older LAT couples, they’ve talked about the future and toured assisted living centers together. “Someday, if he needs me to help him or I need him to help me, we will probably rent an apartment together, with our own bedrooms, and hire extra help,” Dannar said. “Our plan is to take care of each other until one of us is gone or we go into a nursing home.”

William Mamel is already making good on a similar promise to Margaret Sheroff, who had a mass removed from her gallbladder late last year and recently was hospitalized with complications from chemotherapy.

“With her in the hospital, I spend most of my days there,” said Mamel, who was a good friend of Sheroff’s with his wife of 37 years, Betty Ann, who passed away 2½ years ago. “Being caregivers for each other isn’t even a question.”

Their situation is complicated by Sheroff’s guardianship for her husband, John, who has advanced dementia and resides in a nursing home. “Marriage isn’t in the picture for us, but that doesn’t matter,” Sheroff said. “We’re taking one day at a time and enjoying being together.”

“Just to be able to have someone that you can wake up with in the morning and talk to, someone to have coffee with and see the smile on their face, is such a blessing,” she continued. “At this time of life, it’s really, really important to have someone in your life who’s there for you.”

Veterans And Anti-War Activists Make Peace With Vietnam -- And Each Other

DA NANG, Vietnam ― The street that leads to David Clark’s home is marked with a sign that says “Ushi’s house.” That’s the name of his wife, born in the year of the buffalo under the Vietnamese zodiac. Clark is also a buffalo ― that’s what makes them a good match, he says.

In other ways, they’re a surprising pair: Clark first came to Da Nang in 1968 as a 19-year-old Marine fighting in the Vietnam War. He returned to the country four decades later to see what had become of it. He met Ushi, who is Vietnamese, a few years later at a restaurant she owns in the town of Hue.

He remembers she was wearing a chartreuse dress, with long earrings and a watch to match. They later danced in the street as Ushi’s favorite song ― the Beatles’ “Eight Days a Week” ― played at a festival.

The two fell in love and married in a Catholic church while wearing traditional Vietnamese wedding clothes. Later, they bought a house near the beach in Da Nang and remodeled it to add some Western elements, including a filter that lets them drink straight from the kitchen sink. 

On a warm night this spring, with the sounds of karaoke wafting through the streets from nearby bars and restaurants, Clark’s house offered another example of worlds colliding. A group that in the late 1960s wouldn’t have been caught under the same roof ― let alone sharing an appetizer of deep-fried Vietnamese spring rolls ― gathered around a large kitchen table.

The guests included Floyd Henderson, a Vietnam War draft dodger who fled to Canada in 1969; Cathy Wilkerson, a former member of the militant Weather Underground group who landed on the FBI’s “10 Most Wanted” list; and Chuck Searcy, who also served in the Vietnam War and has since returned to live in Hanoi.

Searcy is also the vice president of the Vietnamese chapter of Veterans for Peace, an anti-war nonprofit. Through the organization, he leads tours of the country geared toward Vietnam War veterans and activists, but anyone is welcome to join. That’s what brought the unlikely group together at that kitchen table ― it was 12th day of their trip from Hanoi to Saigon.

For some, going back to Vietnam is a way to make peace with the past. For others, the trip is a chance to connect with a place and a cause that still matters deeply to them.

War tourism isn’t a new concept, and veterans have been returning to Vietnam for years. But Searcy says he probably won’t keep hosting his tour. The affected generation is aging, and it’s difficult to get enough interest in the trips to justify them. Ten people traveled with him this year; usually about 15 people join.

Searcy was stationed in Saigon from 1967 to 1968 as part of an intelligence battalion. He returned to the country for the first time in 1992, and moved there three years later to take a job at a nonprofit in Hanoi. 

His tour takes a little over two weeks. It costs $2,750, plus airfare, and participants are asked to bring a gift of $1,000. At the end of the journey, they decide together how to donate the money. 

Clark has been on the board of Vietnam’s Veterans for Peace chapter for several years, which is how he met Searcy. He describes Searcy in military terms: a point man leading others to learn how to make amends for the United States’ role in the war.

Clark has taken part in a few of Searcy’s trips, but this is his first year hosting a dinner and welcoming people on the tour into his home.

It was a bloody year in the Vietnam War, and Hanoi wasn’t accessible by a commercial flight. But the activists planned to hitch a ride on a mail plane that made a daily trip to the city because an international agreement dictated that it wouldn’t be shot down, Wilkerson said.

They never made it across the border. The U.S. had started bombing the northern city, and the North Vietnamese decided it was too dangerous for the students to make the trip. So the North Vietnamese met them in Phnom Penh for four days of meetings and discussion.

Wilkerson caught the attention of national news ― and the FBI ― when her father’s New York City townhouse, where she and other activists had been building a nail bomb, exploded in 1970. Three people died in the incident, and Wilkerson spent the next decade evading authorities by working minimum-wage jobs without an ID. She surrendered to law enforcement in 1980 and spent 11 months in prison.

Wilkerson is petite and shy, with silver-framed glasses. Her outward appearance doesn’t match with the ‘60s radical who got caught up in a group advocating for an “armed struggle” against the U.S. government. But she still describes herself as an activist.

The events leading up to the townhouse explosion were “ill-advised,” Wilkerson said. But even as she grew older, she maintained an interest in Vietnam. 

“People don’t think about the consequences of war beyond the bullets,” she said. “I needed to touch base with [Vietnam] again. To see what they’ve done, how far they’ve come.”

When his brother threatened to turn him into the FBI, Henderson took the $700 he had in his sock drawer and spent $250 of it on a Buick. He packed his typewriter, guitars and other possessions and drove with a friend to International Falls, Minnesota. Henderson had no intention of coming back once they crossed into Canada. 

“I didn’t want to kill ― I had no desire whatsoever to shoot another human being for any reason,” he said.

Although he’d made it across the border, he didn’t have a legal right to be in the country permanently. “I spent that winter living pretty much on the street,” he said.

Henderson later secured a legal right to be in Canada, but eventually returned to the U.S. after President Jimmy Carter pardoned draft dodgers.

Henderson is gentle and thoughtful when he speaks. He has spent a great deal of time considering his choice to flee the U.S. in 1969 while so many others were getting drafted. “Sometimes it’s an almost constant ― regret might not be the right word for it, though it’s probably the closest I can come to it ― that I did not go to Vietnam.”

He’d make the same decision again, he noted. But still, he struggles with what he described as “survivor guilt.” That feeling was what originally brought him on Searcy’s tour in 2014. 

That group included many combat veterans, which made Henderson nervous. “I went with a huge amount of trepidation because I wasn’t sure what kind of reaction I was going to get from these guys,” he said.

He was surprised at the response he received. “Without a single hesitation, they accepted me as one of them,” he said. “Even going so far as to call me a veteran and one of their brothers.”

He joined the trip again this time for another chance to see the country.

Clark joined the United States Marine Corps on his 17th birthday. On a warm day in March at the hotel where Searcy’s group was staying, he recounted arriving in Vietnam for the first time. He couldn’t legally vote or drink in his hometown, but here, he could carry a gun. He remembers that vividly.

It was a court-martial offense to leave the compound without a weapon, so Clark always had his M16 and rounds with him. And when he encountered a Vietnamese person, he remembers what he’d do.

“Every time I came across the Vietnamese ― I didn’t care if it was a man, woman or a child ― I would point that M16 in their face. And I wanted them to fear me. Because I felt if they feared me my chances of going home were much, much better,” Clark said. 

Clark was outwardly successful in the U.S. after the war, but he struggled emotionally to come to terms with his experiences. He couldn’t forget that look of fear he’d put in people’s faces. Or the battles where he’d shoot into the fray, not knowing whom or what he might be hitting. Certain dates or moments that were meaningless to others would trigger terrible memories of the war.

In 2007, a friend who had been in the Air Force suggested Clark try going back to Vietnam. So he went for it. He landed in Saigon and was waiting nervously at immigration when the humidity hit him, then the smell ― and then he saw people. The memories came right back. He wanted to turn around.

But he didn’t. In fact, the trip turned out to be a positive experience. He couldn’t believe how welcoming the Vietnamese people were. He visited several other times, and in 2013, he returned to stay for a year.

He hasn’t left since.

Clark likes to visit the Marble Mountains outside Da Nang, which he used to climb when he was stationed here. He watches the sunrise and looks out over the landscape ― sometimes it’s cloudy, sometimes it’s rainy. But the sun always comes up.

“When I’m in the United States, the American war in Vietnam haunts me every day and every night. I see many sights, and I see those faces,” he said. “But when I’m in Vietnam and I’m on the top of Marble Mountain and I’m looking around and I don’t see no flares, no tracers, no choppers, no gunfire, no artillery fire, no rounds going over your head ― the American war was over 40 years ago. They’re at peace here. And I find peace here.”

As everyone sat around the big kitchen table enjoying Ushi’s homemade yogurt for dessert, Clark poured two glasses of Johnnie Walker Red Label scotch. He clinked glasses with George Mische, another participant on the trip. Mische burned draft cards with homemade napalm in 1968 as part of the Catholic group that became known as the “Catonsville Nine.”

Searcy told the group his story of first returning to Vietnam after the war, describing how he panicked as his plane approached the Saigon airport.

His anxiety was so intense that he would have turned the plane around, he said. But he couldn’t. 

The group listened, smiling and nodding over their shared history. 

As the evening drew to a close, Searcy’s tour participants bid goodbye to their hosts. They got back on a bus and made their way to their hotel. The next morning they’d eat warm, salty fried rice or pho, a traditional Vietnamese soup, at the hotel breakfast buffet before heading to the airport. From there, they’d fly south to Saigon.

Clark left the house and walked down dark, warm streets to one of his favorite local cafes. He smoked thuoc lao, a Vietnamese tobacco, out of a water pipe, the bubbles gurgling. Motorbikes hummed along past the café, and he greeted the two children inside the shop. It’s his favorite place in the city, he said.

Heading back home afterward, he called “hello, hello” to the Vietnamese people he passed. They smiled and waved back.

Veterans And Anti-War Activists Make Peace With Vietnam -- And Each Other

DA NANG, Vietnam ― The street that leads to David Clark’s home is marked with a sign that says “Ushi’s house.” That’s the name of his wife, born in the year of the buffalo under the Vietnamese zodiac. Clark is also a buffalo ― that’s what makes them a good match, he says.

In other ways, they’re a surprising pair: Clark first came to Da Nang in 1968 as a 19-year-old Marine fighting in the Vietnam War. He returned to the country four decades later to see what had become of it. He met Ushi, who is Vietnamese, a few years later at a restaurant she owns in the town of Hue.

He remembers she was wearing a chartreuse dress, with long earrings and a watch to match. They later danced in the street as Ushi’s favorite song ― the Beatles’ “Eight Days a Week” ― played at a festival.

The two fell in love and married in a Catholic church while wearing traditional Vietnamese wedding clothes. Later, they bought a house near the beach in Da Nang and remodeled it to add some Western elements, including a filter that lets them drink straight from the kitchen sink. 

On a warm night this spring, with the sounds of karaoke wafting through the streets from nearby bars and restaurants, Clark’s house offered another example of worlds colliding. A group that in the late 1960s wouldn’t have been caught under the same roof ― let alone sharing an appetizer of deep-fried Vietnamese spring rolls ― gathered around a large kitchen table.

The guests included Floyd Henderson, a Vietnam War draft dodger who fled to Canada in 1969; Cathy Wilkerson, a former member of the militant Weather Underground group who landed on the FBI’s “10 Most Wanted” list; and Chuck Searcy, who also served in the Vietnam War and has since returned to live in Hanoi.

Searcy is also the vice president of the Vietnamese chapter of Veterans for Peace, an anti-war nonprofit. Through the organization, he leads tours of the country geared toward Vietnam War veterans and activists, but anyone is welcome to join. That’s what brought the unlikely group together at that kitchen table ― it was 12th day of their trip from Hanoi to Saigon.

For some, going back to Vietnam is a way to make peace with the past. For others, the trip is a chance to connect with a place and a cause that still matters deeply to them.

War tourism isn’t a new concept, and veterans have been returning to Vietnam for years. But Searcy says he probably won’t keep hosting his tour. The affected generation is aging, and it’s difficult to get enough interest in the trips to justify them. Ten people traveled with him this year; usually about 15 people join.

Searcy was stationed in Saigon from 1967 to 1968 as part of an intelligence battalion. He returned to the country for the first time in 1992, and moved there three years later to take a job at a nonprofit in Hanoi. 

His tour takes a little over two weeks. It costs $2,750, plus airfare, and participants are asked to bring a gift of $1,000. At the end of the journey, they decide together how to donate the money. 

Clark has been on the board of Vietnam’s Veterans for Peace chapter for several years, which is how he met Searcy. He describes Searcy in military terms: a point man leading others to learn how to make amends for the United States’ role in the war.

Clark has taken part in a few of Searcy’s trips, but this is his first year hosting a dinner and welcoming people on the tour into his home.

But he didn’t. In fact, the trip turned out to be a positive experience. He couldn’t believe how welcoming the Vietnamese people were. He visited several other times, and in 2013, he returned to stay for a year.

He hasn’t left since.

Clark likes to visit the Marble Mountains outside Da Nang, which he used to climb when he was stationed here. He watches the sunrise and looks out over the landscape ― sometimes it’s cloudy, sometimes it’s rainy. But the sun always comes up.

“When I’m in the United States, the American war in Vietnam haunts me every day and every night. I see many sights, and I see those faces,” he said. “But when I’m in Vietnam and I’m on the top of Marble Mountain and I’m looking around and I don’t see no flares, no tracers, no choppers, no gunfire, no artillery fire, no rounds going over your head ― the American war was over 40 years ago. They’re at peace here. And I find peace here.”

Veterans And Anti-War Activists Make Peace With Vietnam -- And Each Other

DA NANG, Vietnam ― The street that leads to David Clark’s home is marked with a sign that says “Ushi’s house.” That’s the name of his wife, born in the year of the buffalo under the Vietnamese zodiac. Clark is also a buffalo ― that’s what makes them a good match, he says.

In other ways, they’re a surprising pair: Clark first came to Da Nang in 1968 as a 19-year-old Marine fighting in the Vietnam War. He returned to the country four decades later to see what had become of it. He met Ushi, who is Vietnamese, a few years later at a restaurant she owns in the town of Hue.

He remembers she was wearing a chartreuse dress, with long earrings and a watch to match. They later danced in the street as Ushi’s favorite song ― the Beatles’ “Eight Days a Week” ― played at a festival.

The two fell in love and married in a Catholic church while wearing traditional Vietnamese wedding clothes. Later, they bought a house near the beach in Da Nang and remodeled it to add some Western elements, including a filter that lets them drink straight from the kitchen sink. 

On a warm night this spring, with the sounds of karaoke wafting through the streets from nearby bars and restaurants, Clark’s house offered another example of worlds colliding. A group that in the late 1960s wouldn’t have been caught under the same roof ― let alone sharing an appetizer of deep-fried Vietnamese spring rolls ― gathered around a large kitchen table.

The guests included Floyd Henderson, a Vietnam War draft dodger who fled to Canada in 1969; Cathy Wilkerson, a former member of the militant Weather Underground group who landed on the FBI’s “10 Most Wanted” list; and Chuck Searcy, who also served in the Vietnam War and has since returned to live in Hanoi.

Searcy is also the vice president of the Vietnamese chapter of Veterans for Peace, an anti-war nonprofit. Through the organization, he leads tours of the country geared toward Vietnam War veterans and activists, but anyone is welcome to join. That’s what brought the unlikely group together at that kitchen table ― it was 12th day of their trip from Hanoi to Saigon.

For some, going back to Vietnam is a way to make peace with the past. For others, the trip is a chance to connect with a place and a cause that still matters deeply to them.

War tourism isn’t a new concept, and veterans have been returning to Vietnam for years. But Searcy says he probably won’t keep hosting his tour. The affected generation is aging, and it’s difficult to get enough interest in the trips to justify them. Ten people traveled with him this year; usually about 15 people join.

Searcy was stationed in Saigon from 1967 to 1968 as part of an intelligence battalion. He returned to the country for the first time in 1992, and moved there three years later to take a job at a nonprofit in Hanoi. 

His tour takes a little over two weeks. It costs $2,750, plus airfare, and participants are asked to bring a gift of $1,000. At the end of the journey, they decide together how to donate the money. 

Clark has been on the board of Vietnam’s Veterans for Peace chapter for several years, which is how he met Searcy. He describes Searcy in military terms: a point man leading others to learn how to make amends for the United States’ role in the war.

Clark has taken part in a few of Searcy’s trips, but this is his first year hosting a dinner and welcoming people on the tour into his home.

“If you had told me 40 years ago that I’d be here in Vietnam, I’d have said you’re full of shit as a turkey ― a Christmas turkey,” he said. “I came here in 1968 to die for my country. Thank God I didn’t. You know what’s the greatest gift I have? I get to die here of my own choice.”

For Wilkerson, the 2017 trip was a chance to complete a journey she started 50 years ago.

In 1967, she and three other members of Students for a Democratic Society flew from the U.S. to Cambodia by way of Paris. Their goal was to make their way to meet with the Viet Cong in North Vietnam and bring back information to help their anti-war efforts in the U.S. 

It was a bloody year in the Vietnam War, and Hanoi wasn’t accessible by a commercial flight. But the activists planned to hitch a ride on a mail plane that made a daily trip to the city because an international agreement dictated that it wouldn’t be shot down, Wilkerson said.

They never made it across the border. The U.S. had started bombing the northern city, and the North Vietnamese decided it was too dangerous for the students to make the trip. So the North Vietnamese met them in Phnom Penh for four days of meetings and discussion.

Wilkerson caught the attention of national news ― and the FBI ― when her father’s New York City townhouse, where she and other activists had been building a nail bomb, exploded in 1970. Three people died in the incident, and Wilkerson spent the next decade evading authorities by working minimum-wage jobs without an ID. She surrendered to law enforcement in 1980 and spent 11 months in prison.

Wilkerson is petite and shy, with silver-framed glasses. Her outward appearance doesn’t match with the ‘60s radical who got caught up in a group advocating for an “armed struggle” against the U.S. government. But she still describes herself as an activist.

The events leading up to the townhouse explosion were “ill-advised,” Wilkerson said. But even as she grew older, she maintained an interest in Vietnam. 

“People don’t think about the consequences of war beyond the bullets,” she said. “I needed to touch base with [Vietnam] again. To see what they’ve done, how far they’ve come.”

Henderson joined Searcy’s trip for the first time in 2014. Forty-five years earlier, he’d received a bench warrant for his arrest after ignoring several draft notices.

When his brother threatened to turn him into the FBI, Henderson took the $700 he had in his sock drawer and spent $250 of it on a Buick. He packed his typewriter, guitars and other possessions and drove with a friend to International Falls, Minnesota. Henderson had no intention of coming back once they crossed into Canada. 

“I didn’t want to kill ― I had no desire whatsoever to shoot another human being for any reason,” he said.

Although he’d made it across the border, he didn’t have a legal right to be in the country permanently. “I spent that winter living pretty much on the street,” he said.

Henderson later secured a legal right to be in Canada, but eventually returned to the U.S. after President Jimmy Carter pardoned draft dodgers.

Henderson is gentle and thoughtful when he speaks. He has spent a great deal of time considering his choice to flee the U.S. in 1969 while so many others were getting drafted. “Sometimes it’s an almost constant ― regret might not be the right word for it, though it’s probably the closest I can come to it ― that I did not go to Vietnam.”

He’d make the same decision again, he noted. But still, he struggles with what he described as “survivor guilt.” That feeling was what originally brought him on Searcy’s tour in 2014. 

That group included many combat veterans, which made Henderson nervous. “I went with a huge amount of trepidation because I wasn’t sure what kind of reaction I was going to get from these guys,” he said.

He was surprised at the response he received. “Without a single hesitation, they accepted me as one of them,” he said. “Even going so far as to call me a veteran and one of their brothers.”

He joined the trip again this time for another chance to see the country.

Clark joined the United States Marine Corps on his 17th birthday. On a warm day in March at the hotel where Searcy’s group was staying, he recounted arriving in Vietnam for the first time. He couldn’t legally vote or drink in his hometown, but here, he could carry a gun. He remembers that vividly.

That’s what brought the unlikely group together at that kitchen table ― it was 12th day of their trip from Hanoi to Saigon.

For some, going back to Vietnam is a way to make peace with the past. For others, the trip is a chance to connect with a place and a cause that still matters deeply to them.

War tourism isn’t a new concept, and veterans have been returning to Vietnam for years. But Searcy says he probably won’t keep hosting his tour. The affected generation is aging, and it’s difficult to get enough interest in the trips to justify them. Ten people traveled with him this year; usually about 15 people join.

Searcy was stationed in Saigon from 1967 to 1968 as part of an intelligence battalion. He returned to the country for the first time in 1992, and moved there three years later to take a job at a nonprofit in Hanoi. 

His tour takes a little over two weeks. It costs $2,750, plus airfare, and participants are asked to bring a gift of $1,000. At the end of the journey, they decide together how to donate the money. 

Clark has been on the board of Vietnam’s Veterans for Peace chapter for several years, which is how he met Searcy. He describes Searcy in military terms: a point man leading others to learn how to make amends for the United States’ role in the war.

Clark has taken part in a few of Searcy’s trips, but this is his first year hosting a dinner and welcoming people on the tour into his home.

“If you had told me 40 years ago that I’d be here in Vietnam, I’d have said you’re full of shit as a turkey ― a Christmas turkey,” he said. “I came here in 1968 to die for my country. Thank God I didn’t. You know what’s the greatest gift I have? I get to die here of my own choice.”

For Wilkerson, the 2017 trip was a chance to complete a journey she started 50 years ago.

In 1967, she and three other members of Students for a Democratic Society flew from the U.S. to Cambodia by way of Paris. Their goal was to make their way to meet with the Viet Cong in North Vietnam and bring back information to help their anti-war efforts in the U.S. 

It was a bloody year in the Vietnam War, and Hanoi wasn’t accessible by a commercial flight. But the activists planned to hitch a ride on a mail plane that made a daily trip to the city because an international agreement dictated that it wouldn’t be shot down, Wilkerson said.

They never made it across the border. The U.S. had started bombing the northern city, and the North Vietnamese decided it was too dangerous for the students to make the trip. So the North Vietnamese met them in Phnom Penh for four days of meetings and discussion.

Wilkerson caught the attention of national news ― and the FBI ― when her father’s New York City townhouse, where she and other activists had been building a nail bomb, exploded in 1970. Three people died in the incident, and Wilkerson spent the next decade evading authorities by working minimum-wage jobs without an ID. She surrendered to law enforcement in 1980 and spent 11 months in prison.

Wilkerson is petite and shy, with silver-framed glasses. Her outward appearance doesn’t match with the ‘60s radical who got caught up in a group advocating for an “armed struggle” against the U.S. government. But she still describes herself as an activist.

The events leading up to the townhouse explosion were “ill-advised,” Wilkerson said. But even as she grew older, she maintained an interest in Vietnam. 

“People don’t think about the consequences of war beyond the bullets,” she said. “I needed to touch base with [Vietnam] again. To see what they’ve done, how far they’ve come.”

Henderson joined Searcy’s trip for the first time in 2014. Forty-five years earlier, he’d received a bench warrant for his arrest after ignoring several draft notices.

When his brother threatened to turn him into the FBI, Henderson took the $700 he had in his sock drawer and spent $250 of it on a Buick. He packed his typewriter, guitars and other possessions and drove with a friend to International Falls, Minnesota. Henderson had no intention of coming back once they crossed into Canada. 

“I didn’t want to kill ― I had no desire whatsoever to shoot another human being for any reason,” he said.

Although he’d made it across the border, he didn’t have a legal right to be in the country permanently. “I spent that winter living pretty much on the street,” he said.

Henderson later secured a legal right to be in Canada, but eventually returned to the U.S. after President Jimmy Carter pardoned draft dodgers.

Henderson is gentle and thoughtful when he speaks. He has spent a great deal of time considering his choice to flee the U.S. in 1969 while so many others were getting drafted. “Sometimes it’s an almost constant ― regret might not be the right word for it, though it’s probably the closest I can come to it ― that I did not go to Vietnam.”

He’d make the same decision again, he noted. But still, he struggles with what he described as “survivor guilt.” That feeling was what originally brought him on Searcy’s tour in 2014. 

That group included many combat veterans, which made Henderson nervous. “I went with a huge amount of trepidation because I wasn’t sure what kind of reaction I was going to get from these guys,” he said.

He was surprised at the response he received. “Without a single hesitation, they accepted me as one of them,” he said. “Even going so far as to call me a veteran and one of their brothers.”

He joined the trip again this time for another chance to see the country.

Clark joined the United States Marine Corps on his 17th birthday. On a warm day in March at the hotel where Searcy’s group was staying, he recounted arriving in Vietnam for the first time. He couldn’t legally vote or drink in his hometown, but here, he could carry a gun. He remembers that vividly.

It was a court-martial offense to leave the compound without a weapon, so Clark always had his M16 and rounds with him. And when he encountered a Vietnamese person, he remembers what he’d do.

“Every time I came across the Vietnamese ― I didn’t care if it was a man, woman or a child ― I would point that M16 in their face. And I wanted them to fear me. Because I felt if they feared me my chances of going home were much, much better,” Clark said. 

Clark was outwardly successful in the U.S. after the war, but he struggled emotionally to come to terms with his experiences. He couldn’t forget that look of fear he’d put in people’s faces. Or the battles where he’d shoot into the fray, not knowing whom or what he might be hitting. Certain dates or moments that were meaningless to others would trigger terrible memories of the war.

In 2007, a friend who had been in the Air Force suggested Clark try going back to Vietnam. So he went for it. He landed in Saigon and was waiting nervously at immigration when the humidity hit him, then the smell ― and then he saw people. The memories came right back. He wanted to turn around.

But he didn’t. In fact, the trip turned out to be a positive experience. He couldn’t believe how welcoming the Vietnamese people were. He visited several other times, and in 2013, he returned to stay for a year.

He hasn’t left since.

Clark likes to visit the Marble Mountains outside Da Nang, which he used to climb when he was stationed here. He watches the sunrise and looks out over the landscape ― sometimes it’s cloudy, sometimes it’s rainy. But the sun always comes up.

“When I’m in the United States, the American war in Vietnam haunts me every day and every night. I see many sights, and I see those faces,” he said. “But when I’m in Vietnam and I’m on the top of Marble Mountain and I’m looking around and I don’t see no flares, no tracers, no choppers, no gunfire, no artillery fire, no rounds going over your head ― the American war was over 40 years ago. They’re at peace here. And I find peace here.”

As everyone sat around the big kitchen table enjoying Ushi’s homemade yogurt for dessert, Clark poured two glasses of Johnnie Walker Red Label scotch. He clinked glasses with George Mische, another participant on the trip. Mische burned draft cards with homemade napalm in 1968 as part of the Catholic group that became known as the “Catonsville Nine.”

Searcy told the group his story of first returning to Vietnam after the war, describing how he panicked as his plane approached the Saigon airport.

His anxiety was so intense that he would have turned the plane around, he said. But he couldn’t. 

The group listened, smiling and nodding over their shared history. 

As the evening drew to a close, Searcy’s tour participants bid goodbye to their hosts. They got back on a bus and made their way to their hotel. The next morning they’d eat warm, salty fried rice or pho, a traditional Vietnamese soup, at the hotel breakfast buffet before heading to the airport. From there, they’d fly south to Saigon.

Clark left the house and walked down dark, warm streets to one of his favorite local cafes. He smoked thuoc lao, a Vietnamese tobacco, out of a water pipe, the bubbles gurgling. Motorbikes hummed along past the café, and he greeted the two children inside the shop. It’s his favorite place in the city, he said.

Heading back home afterward, he called “hello, hello” to the Vietnamese people he passed. They smiled and waved back.
