Love Letter to My Library: Chelsea Bayley
We're grateful to Chelsea Bayley for taking the time to submit this Love Letter.
Hello! I have three young children (ages 5, 3, and 1) and I want to tell you about what the Library means to them, and to me.
We’ve attended Storytimes throughout the year at quite a few libraries: Himmel Park, Eckstrom-Columbus, Martha Cooper, and Joel D. Valdez Main. This year, we enjoyed many amazing Summer Reading programs like Brain Games, Tohono Chul Desert Players Present: Where Saguaros Sing, and Rodents of Unusual Size.
I want to express my deep thankfulness for the valuable service that Storytime and other Summer Reading events provide to children and families in Tucson. Every program we have attended has been delightful and my children learn so much. They inspire conversations within our family, and we are grateful for the work and dedication of resources that go into these programs.
For us, it’s not just about attending programs. At each visit, we tend to check out more than a dozen (up to 20!) books. Right now, my children love the Fancy Nancy series and Skippyjon Jones. There is something so inherently satisfying about putting a book in their hands. We like e-books, but nothing really beats turning pages in a book. We’re happy you give us both options! We also love children’s books with CDs. Thanks for keeping those around – it seems like these are being phased out elsewhere.
Fancy Nancy
Skippyjon Jones
I also want to express my gratitude for the Culture Pass program. I appreciate the opportunity to visit these great places. The Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum and the Tucson Botanical Gardens are among our favorites.
Thank you so much for all of the wonderful resources you make available to children and families!
With appreciation,
Chelsea Bayley, and the Bayley family

There are times when work and life fall out of balance.
It seems that there’s little that you can do to make significant changes. One way you can leave all this behind you is by planning a solo excursion. There is nothing better than exploring an unknown city on your own. In fact, you might also discover things about yourself that you never knew. In fact, many studies show that our level of happiness, acceptance and general behavior is closely linked to the five people we interact with on a daily basis. Here are the 10 best things to do alone in Tucson, Arizona.
1. Go biking over Rattlesnake Bridge
The Rattlesnake Bridge is an artistic landmark where one end of the bridge is shaped like the head of a snake, while the other features the tail. The tail also uses motion sensors and generates snake-like sounds. The bridge leads to Broadway with features natural parks and other green civic spaces, perfect for resting after your bike ride.
2. Hike at Sabino Canyon
Situated in the Catalina Mountains, the Sabino Canyon is a part of the Coronado National Forest. You can take a narrated shuttle bus tour and hike your way to the picturesque canyon. This is a great spot for landscape photography, it puts you in the heart of nature. You can appreciate the wild flora and fauna and even plan an outdoor picnic. Ensure that you bring food supplies with you as hiking on the Sabino Canyon can take longer than anticipated. At the end of your hike, you are welcomed with even more breathtaking views that mother nature has to offer.
3. See the MOCA
The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) first opened its doors to visitors back in 1997. Ever since the museum has been serving as a landmark for Tucson’s art culture. It features some of the most important art pieces that were created in Tucson. Even if you are not into art, you can’t help but marvel at some of the greatest art exhibits that are displayed in this museum.
4. Explore Tucson Museum of Art
The Tucson Museum of Art (TMA) features exhibits from pre-Columbian, Spanish Colonial and even East Asian art. The institution is spread across 74,000 square feet (6.8 square meters) of exhibition area while the remaining four acres is occupied by historic homes. You can expect to see international and travel exhibitions on your visit, while permanent collections are also available for you to enjoy. The museum’s campus is often used to host community and private events such as proms, weddings and even award ceremonies.
5. Visit the Arizona Historical Society Downtown Museum
The Downtown History Museum features a plethora of exhibits that tell the story of downtown Tucson. It features the early businesses that helped Tucson’s economy thrive. It also showcases the daily life of Tucson residents with artifacts that are related to social clubs, theaters, music and more. The admission to the museum is free of cost, though any voluntary donations are always appreciated.
6. Check out Ben’s Bells mosaic murals
Ben’s Bells mosaic murals hold a special place in Tucson, they are created by community members, local artists, and students. Built out of ceramic tiles, the murals employ a mixture of portland white cement and sand. A tint is used to provide color. The core message they want to share is to teach the impact of intentional kindness to people as a way of life.
7. Relax at Tohono Chul Park
Located in Casas Adobes, the Tohono Chul is a cultural museum that also features a botanical garden, dedicated to preserving nature. The name represents the rich cultural heritage and language of the Southern Arizona residents. The abundance of natural beauty and cultural diversity showcases the historical importance of Tohono Chul. You can visit early to catch a hearty breakfast while taking in the local surroundings enjoying a wide variety of flora and fauna.
8. Watch a concert at Rialto Theatre
Located on Congress Street in Downtown Tucson, the Rialto Theatre is a dedicated center for concerts and performing arts. The theatre first opened its doors to the public all the way back in 1920. The commercial block surrounding the Rialto building has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 2003. Since the original theatre was designed years ago, the overall size is smaller compared to venues today. This is a perk as it allows audiences to sit closer to the artists, providing them with a more intimate setting. Enjoy your favorite bands as concerts are frequently hosted by this theatre.
9. Dine at Le Rendez-Vouz
Le Rendez-Vous is an upscale, sophisticated French restaurant which is the perfect place for a romantic evening with your better half. Enjoy French cuisine in all its glory without worrying about it being heavy on your wallet. This place is one of the more reasonably priced fine-dining restaurants in the city. Additionally, the Rendez-vous is known for its generous portion sizes. Ensure that you save space as the desserts are highly recommended by returning customers. This is a great place to enjoy quality time with your friends and family and offers a romantic setting which can be perfect for popping the question.
10. Visit Good Oak Bar at happy hour
The Good Oak Bar is one of the favorite hangout places for local Tucson residents. It gives you a friendly atmosphere with local delicacies and freshly brewed draft beer. Enjoy a wide variety of liquor offerings and pair them with your favorite snacks. The Good Oak Bar is a must-visit during happy hours as you can save plenty of cash while enjoying the complete local experience. This place is consistently rated as one of the must-visit places in all of Tucson.

Happy Friday Everyone and Happy Holiday Season!
Haven’t started your holiday shopping yet?  Luckily, 250 Artisans are all coming to Tucson for The 4th Avenue Winter Street Fair to showcase their wares for you. You get the chance to shop all weekend for that special gift and you also get entertainment with live performances, food and beverage options too!  And since you’re going downtown guess what?  Tomorrow is also 2nd Saturdays Downtown.  You’re running out of excuses not to begin unless of course, you’re just not in the mood yet.  Well, The Nutcracker!  Enough said!
Tumblr media
Want to be amazed by a guitar player?  Go see The Acoustic Ninja at The Fox Theatre tonight at 7:30pm. Want to be amazed by two guitar players? Go see Ryanhood (named for Ryan Green and Cameron Hood) tomorrow at the Fox. Unbelievable guitar players?  Yes.  Putting on the show for free?  Amazing!  If it’s music and story you want, be sure to catch The Music Man at The Arizona Theatre Company now through the end of December.  This Broadway hit has won 5 Tony Awards and a Grammy Award during its long production run.
Tumblr media
Until Mr. sunshine reappears, we can probably get a little boost with some holiday lighting.  You have many choices starting with Desert Nights & Downtown Lights, Tohono Chul Holiday Lights, Tucson Botanical Garden’s Luminaria Lights, Reid Park Zoo Lights, and of course the granddaddy of them all, Winterhaven Festival of Lights.  Top it off with a fresh snowfall at La Encantada with flakes starting to fall precisely at 6:00 and 6:30, and you are rewarded with instant holiday spirit.
May all your shopping experiences be pleasant this weekend.  In between all that running around this weekend if you’re out and about on the east side stop by our Open House at 7643 E Desert Overlook this Sunday and say hi.  As always, please let us know if we can be of any help to you or someone you know!

Loving Living in Tucson, AZ
The original publication of Loving Living in Tucson, AZ was carried out on: ajsgaragedoorservice.com
[caption id="attachment_678" align="alignright" width="300"] Arizona sunset in Tucson[/caption]
Here at AJ's Garage Door Service, we love Tucson and feel very lucky to live here and serve this great community.  Whether you've lived in Tucson your whole life, you're considering making a move here, or you're just admiring us from afar during your snow-pocalypse, this information is for you.
Tucson has so many great things going for it. It's like the golf capital of the world. The golf courses and greens here in Tucson are unreal! You'll find people out there in the mid heat of August golfing a full 18 holes or more. We are also one of the highest rated cities for retirees. Basically that means this is the place to go if you're gonna retire. When it rains here... whoo-whee! It comes down! We have something called monsoon season which runs approximately mid-June probably to towards the end of August. This is basically where the heavens open up and dump right on us from above. The great thing about the monsoon season is it only lasts for a couple of months and typically for the entire year we have sunshine. They say that in Tucson that it's a dry heat. Did I mention that we swim outside in March - sometimes April. Yeah sometimes we have to wait until April...
[caption id="attachment_680" align="alignleft" width="300"] Sabino Canyon just outside Tucson[/caption]
The desert in Tucson is so unbelievably breathtakingly beautiful. It almost is slightly ridiculous. Whether you've been to Romero Pools, whether you've visited Sabino Canyon, all of the hikes and outdoor adventures that you can experience here in Tucson are just simply magnificent. People joke around all the time in Tucson that we are completely surrounded by mountains, and we really are. And they're spectacular.
We hands-down have the best Mexican food outside of Mexico. Tacos floutas, enchiladas. Tucson became the only place in the United States designated a City of Gastronomy by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, known by its acronym, UNESCO. So yeah, we've got some good eating! Let's talk about our animals shall we? Yes, we have creatures... a lot of them. However if you respect them, they typically will respect you. Things like rattlesnakes, gila monsters. People outside of Arizona I don't even think know what a gila monster is. If you see one, run! If they bite you they won't let go.
[caption id="attachment_681" align="alignright" width="300"] Gila Monster[/caption]
We have javelinas. They're like pigs or wild boars. Who doesn't have wildlife where they live? Everyone has wildlife. We just so happen to have ones that live in the desert, which I think makes our wildlife beat your wildlife, if we're getting competitive. 🙂 Other great places to check out with the family: We have Old Tucson (partnered with the Arizona Sonora Western Heritage Foundation), the Sonoran Desert Museum as well as the Tucson Zoo at Reid Park, the Tohono Chul Park Tea Room, the Tucson Botanical Gardens, the Biosphere 2, San Xavier Mission, 4th Avenue Street Fair. Tucson's Hotel Congress, where the infamous John Dillinger was captured and where we celebrate Dillinger Days every year. The Tucson marathon is one of the most beautiful race courses in the entire world. The race course isn't for the faint of heart. However, coming across that 26.2 mile finish line, the race course will leave you breathless.
[caption id="attachment_686" align="alignleft" width="300"] el Tour de Tucson[/caption]
Tucson has one of the top cycling communities in the country, so just get on your bike, start pedaling. If you're a bicyclist you can participate in one of the most world-renowned cycling events, the 107 mile ride in the El Tour de Tucson. With the University of Arizona Wildcats here, we are a large college town and if you're caught wearing an Arizona State University hat or t-shirt in a grocery store, you're cruisin' for a bruisin'. The Tucson International Mariachi Conference is also here... Which is just another cool fact. The great thing about Tucson is it has a little bit of everything for everyone. If you want to find out more about local community spots and things that you should do and must-see sights here in Tucson, just come visit. You won't be disappointed.

A Colourful, Mexican Themed Wedding at Tohono Chul Park
This post A Colourful, Mexican Themed Wedding at Tohono Chul Park first appeared on The Wedding Community Blog
This Mexican themed wedding in the Arizona desert is totally amazing and unique! Incredibly, Reagan and Ryan planned their fabulous wedding at Tohono Chul Park in just six months. We haven’t featured a wedding in the desert before, but it’s such a spectacular, natural backdrop and really sets the scene for this Mexican inspired wedding.
We love all the colourful handmade details and pretty little Mexican touches that add to the beautiful styling of the day – and wait until you see their wedding cake…
A big thank you to Plain Jane Photography for sending us this incredible wedding.
Natural Beauty and Charm
“We wanted to get married in the desert. Like, IN the desert. We were originally planning a backyard wedding at my mom’s where the ceremony would be in the gorgeous natural desert near their house. However, the logistics of throwing a party that large at their home started to get overwhelming. Then I remembered visiting Tohono Chul as a child, and I’d read so many testimonials on how beautiful the park is now. The natural beauty and charm was exactly what we were looking for.”
Colourful Wedding
“I knew that I wanted to wear flowers in my hair and that our wedding would be colourful. My flower crown was my favourite part; I couldn’t have asked for anything more perfect! It was made of fuchsia, orange and yellow ranunculus, and red carnations.
“I saw a bouquet in a Carolina Herrera fashion show made solely out of magnolia leaves, and I fell in love. I wanted to add some white flowers to the mix, so my florist added ranunculus and I think some garden roses to match my flower crown.
“My sister made the signs that guided people to the ceremony, the menu, and all the signs for the welcome, exit and photo booth tables. She even opened up her own Etsy shop afterwards!”
Special Ceremony
“Everything about our ceremony was special. We chose to have our ceremony in the Spanish Garden, which is an area behind where most weddings at Tohono Chul take place. The garden is outside an old house; it’s a clearing surrounded by bushes and trees which create a canopy of shelter from the sun.
“My best friend Lisa officiated the ceremony. We had no idea what she was going to say or how it was going to go. All we knew was she had interviewed each of us separately along with some of our friends.
“When we first stood together, she asked us to turn around and face our guests. My friend Amanda stood up and declared, “I knew I loved Reagan when…”. Another eight guests, including my mom, then all stood up in turn and gave a reason why they loved us.
“Lisa went on to give the most beautiful speech about life, us and our friends. Then she called our friends Vlad and Sean to the front to perform a rendition of a very silly song from the show ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’, called ‘Dayman’. In Ryan’s interview, he said one of the moments he knew he loved me is when I woke up and started singing that song in bed.”
Mexican Theme
“We wanted to have a colourful wedding, and we both have eclectic and unique taste. Growing up in Arizona I have a strong affinity for Mexican culture and décor so it sort of evolved naturally into a Mexican themed wedding, given the natural Arizona desert setting.”
Personal Touches
“We did a lot ourselves, but it was a mix of bought goods with added personal touches. For example, I bought the tin milagros ornaments for the name cards, but I made each name tag. I wanted them to look like Mexican tiles.
“We used colourful paper tissue flowers for the photo booth backdrop, and we ordered papel picado for the table numbers and cake banner. These weren’t do it yourself, but we had these awesome loteria glitter matchboxes as favours on the exit table.
“My cousin is a very talented photographer, so that was an easy choice! She captured our day so beautifully, and helped to make it extra special.”

Here’s What’s Happening in Tucson This Weekend!
Fri 10/12 - Sun 10/14
Tumblr media
Hey Tucson, who are you? You are a wonderful mixture of people, cultures, and traditions.  Come and experience this ‘folklife’ including music, dance, food, customs, games and more all weekend long at Tucson Meet Yourself.  This 45-year-old tradition continues downtown at Jacombe Plaza and you can See some of the scheduled performers here.  Don’t forget that Tomorrow it’s 2nd Saturdays Downtown and, as usual, there are so many things to do, see, eat, hear and enjoy that you’re going to have to come back again next month.
Tumblr media
Since it’s a little chilly outside maybe stay inside and watch a movie or two, three, twelve? Today and tomorrow FilmFestTucson continues with over 30 more programs to choose from.  See all the info you will need to really enjoy this annual event.  If you love the Zoo you’ll probably be there for the special event tonight at Zoocson 2018!  Enjoy music and food while enjoying special exhibits. Bid on your opportunity to join the Zoo for a day and become a trainer, handler or cage cleaner!  Even non-members can find a special plant for themselves or a friend this weekend at the Tohono Chul Plant Sale.  Or check out the Urban Garden Festival at Tucson Botanical Gardens on Sunday.  And cooler weather means we can all enjoy the Farmers Markets this weekend.
Tumblr media
Do you think you’re pretty good on that 6 string?  How well can you play a 47 string instrument with 6 octave range?  See and hear the magic of Yolanda Kondonassis as she plays Brahms Symphony No1 with The Tucson Orchestra this Sunday at Tucson Music Hall.  A world-renowned harpist and a performance you are not likely to forget.
Tumblr media
Speaking of music I know, you haven’t been able to forgive yourself for missing Woodstock nearly 50 years ago, right?  Well guess what all you flower-children; this weekend you can experience groovy non-stop music in the beautiful outdoors at The Oro Valley Music Festival.  And just like at Woodstock, you can find peace and love. And you can also find Uber and Lyft; Apple Pay and Square, digital music and wireless headphones, and all the food and beverage choices you could imagine.  Don’t forget the high tech port-a-potties!  Do you still have that VW Bus?  Great, there’s even VIP parking as well! Rock On!
Whatever your plans, have a fantastic weekend and enjoy the cool breezes.  As always, don’t hesitate to let us know if we can be of help to you or someone you know!

Tumblr media
Happy National Public Garden Day everyone! Today the Sonoran Desert Museum offer’s $5 off admission and free tours of the new Agave Garden. Tohono Chul Gardens and the Tucson Botanical Gardens offer free admission today.  And since our UofA students pay an average of $28,000 per year, the UofA Arboretum is free to the public every day!  Woohoo!  Speaking of the UofA, be careful driving and parking near the university tonight as The 154th Commencement at the University of Arizona starts at 7:30pm.  Congratulations to all the graduates!
Tumblr media
Tomorrow morning at 7am grab your bagel and cream cheese, a cup of coffee, and wander the parking lot at La Encantada for Cars and Coffee!  I hope you find that creampuff of a car you’ve always wanted, at a price you can actually afford!  If you prefer the bigger vehicles, head over to Train Day at the Depot and enjoy music, refreshments and learn about the history of Amtrak in America.
Tumblr media
You can call it Bean Bag or you can call it Cornhole.  Just make sure you know the rules before tossing that first bag at the 2nd Annual CornHole Extravaganza in Oro tomorrow afternoon.  And check out Second Saturdays at Steam Pump Ranch starting with the Farmers Market beginning at 9am.  On the other side of town tomorrow also offers Second Saturdays Downtown where you’re sure to find food, music and drink specials everywhere you look.
Tumblr media
And Sunday, what can be said of this coming Sunday?  Throughout all of history, humankind has revered and celebrated the special bond of mother and child. This Mother’s Day you can find brunches, lunches, teas, walks, races, shows, concerts and shopping sales.  Mothers should choose to spend their day doing whatever activities their hearts desire.  If your mom is still in your life, a special moment shared with her this Mother’s Day just might be the most precious gift she would love to receive!  Happy Mother’s Day to all the Moms out there.
Whatever your plans this weekend, enjoy the sub 100 degree temperatures while you still can.  Don’t forget the sunscreen and water.  As always, let us know if we can be of help to you or someone you know.
