#a breeder in my general area had a curly boy who recently died
Note
Hi! What determines how curly a borzoi is? Is there a preference for more or less curl? And can you tell how curly the puppies will be considering their sire looked to have much more curl than their dam in the photos you posted?
Genetics! There isn’t an overall preference either way at this point in time that I’m aware of. However, the reason we no longer have truly curly borzoi is because past breeders didn’t find them desirable and weeded the curly dogs out of the gene pool. I don’t pretend to be especially educated on the genetics behind it, but there is a specific curly gene that produces borzoi who are curly throughout their entire lives instead of only having the puppy curls. If I’m remembering correctly, there are maybe 2 dogs in the U.S. living that carry the gene, if that.
There’s no real way to tell how curly a borzoi may be in adulthood without the curly gene that I know of. Females tend to look less curly because their coats don’t typically get as long as a male’s coat. Curl level can also look different depending on grooming. I would say Leisel and Varus have not dissimilar curl levels and the bitches from the litter will naturally appear less curly than the males.
