Saw a literary challenge to write about one of your average days in quarantine. They picked Tuesday May 12th. Since all of my days keep blending together, I thought it would help me set a benchmark for how I handled quarantine. So here it is-
May 12th 2020,
My alarm goes off at 7am. I roll over to turn it off and promptly go back to sleep. This was a normal practice even before the world shut down. I don't have set hours at work, but I prefer to start around 8am. Since my work computer is only across the apartment, the motivation to wake up before I absolutely have to is extremely low.
8am rolls around and I can't bring myself to leave the bed yet. It all seems so pointless as no one seems to care what hours I keep and I don't have any early morning meetings. I scroll through Facebook and Tumblr on my phone, I check my email more times than I really need to, and pet whichever cat is closest, usually Sierra. I find a post from a page that I follow that talks about Victorian parlor games and I share it to the Steampunk group I administer. There hasn't been much content in the group for awhile. I wonder if it's because steampunk isn't as popular as it once was or if no one has anything to say. It gets a few likes and one 'Care' emoji. I think it's because it indicates that people miss hanging out together.
Around 8:15 I need to use the toilet, which is enough to get me out of bed and sign into my work computer. CY yells out from his work station at the living room table to remind me to buy the camper table and a spray bottle he wanted for grilling. I order them from Amazon and feel guilty about getting nonessential items in the middle of a pandemic. I spend the first few hours of work scrolling through FB or Tumblr and knitting. While I knit I watch an hour and half long youtube video from ContraPoints about different types of second-hand embarrassment or 'cringe'. I identify a lot with what she says.
I am knitting a pair of socks simply because I have the yarn and I've never done it before. I tested out the gauge to make sure I had the right sized needles and I do. They are long dpns that were given to me by CY's mother once she realized I enjoyed knitting. Apparently she used to knit as well, but it would hurt her hands so she gave up on it. I had tried to use the dpns as intended, even looking up a video and practicing a few times, but I kept dropping stitches and getting annoyed with them. I eventually decided to order a circular needle from Amazon to use instead. I felt very guilty about this since there's all sorts of post-people and delivery people out there who are at risk moving all these boxes around, and here I'm ordering a stupid pair of needles that are a duplicate size to ones I own, but I just don't want to use. The circular needles are extremely nice and easy to work with and it is a pleasure to knit the socks. I still use the dpns as a stitch holder while I knit the heel. Today I'm connecting the insole and knitting along the foot. It's easy and enjoyable work especially after already completing the first sock.
I eat a prepackaged ube cake while I drink my tea and appreciate the nice pairing of flavors.
I feel bad about not getting more of my actual work done. However, I can't bring myself to concentrate on anything related to work. I keep moving my mouse around every 10 or so minutes so it looks like I'm active.
An old D&D friend of mine named Sam posts on FB about how he is proud of his company for continuing to let people work from home despite Ohio loosening some of the Stay at Home restrictions. I reply "We were told to expect to work from home until at least August. I'm grateful since it's one less thing to think about." Sam and I go back a forth a bit more, expressing gratitude and an interest in meeting up again once its safe. It's the first I've interacted with him in about 5 years and it makes me glad to hear from him.
I start lunch early because I don't have anything better to do. For lunch I make myself and CY a sandwich. We have some really good Italian bread we got from the grocery store that we can make into a decent replica of a Philadelphia style hoagie. I already chopped up the veggies so I can just take them out of the fridge and start layering them on. CY likes his sandwich with mayo and turkey. I don't like handling either of those things, but it's easy enough. I make his first then make a veggie version for myself. We use the new hoagie oil which isn't as bad as I had originally feared, but it isn't as good as the name brand one we had before. Pity they were out of it at the store when we went.
My 2019 tax refund from Ohio lands into my investment account. I plan to use it to invest in assorted stocks I feel will bounce back once the economy recovers.
After lunch I watch a few more youtube videos while I knit. One is a career review of the one-hit wonder band 'Living in a Box' and another is a recording of 'the world's worst singer' Florence Foster Jenkins. I had found an article that talked about people who had a medical condition which made them unable to percieve how poorly they performed a skill. In her case, she was a renowned as a very poor singer who believed she was very good and people would come to watch her ironically. I try to watch a congressional hearing where they discuss the health crisis with Dr. Fauci, but it's too depressing so I stop.
My anxiety related to work continues to grow. I figure that I'm not able to bring myself to do any investigation on my own, but I'm still able to ask people questions. I reach out through Skype to a colleague who I believe had worked with this business group before. I am surprised by how helpful she is and how quickly she is to respond. We get on a call and she shows me some reporting she did that is similar and directs me towards a table she thinks would have the values I'm looking for. She recommends another colleague to talk to and I schedule a meeting with him for the next day since he was busying for the rest of today. I feel instantly better. My anxiety about my work plummets and I find the energy and motivation to start investigating another task I've been given. I quickly find 1) the task was way easier than I initially estimated and 2) the data I want isn't available where I thought it would be. I even find out a new way to pull code out of Tableau and I excitedly share my discovery with another colleague. Around this time it's getting close to 4pm, my usual time to stop working and just become available for questions, should anyone need to reach out to me. I feel better about myself and allow myself to take more pleasure in my activities.
I start to prepare for the online D&D game I host each week, Tuesdays at 7:30pm. One of my favorite things about quarantine is that it's given me the time and ability to play again. I've missed having a regular D&D game badly. We had a very good game the previous week and I'm excited to make new material for this new game. I decide to include a villain who is a Banksia Man, one of the anatognists from the Australian fairy-tale Snugglepot and Cuddlepie. CY had helped me over the weekend come up with a cool backstory for him. I take notes and save some pictures so I can display them to my players through screen share.
A group of our friends are doing a Plank Challenge while we try to stay in shape while in quarantine. Colette set up a FB group with a list of exercises to do for 13 days. Each day, you do your assigned exercise then you post to the group to indicate you completed your day's tasks. CY and I made a point to work out for a bit each day after work and were already doing a fair amount of planks so the challenge as it was written was too easy for us. We tend to double the amount of time for each exercise or we double up the reps. My tasks for today are 30 seconds each of planks, rocking planks, hip dips, and up downs. I do all the exercises straight through twice with a short break in between sets then post to FB in the group.
After doing planks, CY and I go out to a nearby park to walk for a bit. We go for about 2.5 miles. It's a nice day, nearly 60 degrees. I am happy to see wild flowers starting to sprout up and the leaves coming back to the trees. Most people in the park are polite and keep their distance. It's rare to see people wearing masks while they are walking or running, so it almost feels normal.
We make it back with enough time for me to start getting my notes ready for game. CY offers to make me food and asks what I'd like to eat. We had just gone to Trader Joe's the weekend before and gotten a truly ridiculous amount of frozen food. He insists I pick something from the freezer to eat. In the end we decide he'll cut up the jackfruit crab cakes and make them into 'seafood tacos'. He even makes some sriracha ranch to go with it. The crab cake is surprisingly greasy, but it's very tasty and filling. Not sure I'd get it again though.
I go into the gaming group call and we quickly realize that only Gene and Aaron are going to be able to join game. We don't think it will be enough to continue the campaign I prepared for so I offer to do a one-shot just for them. I show them a cute rpg I found awhile ago called 'Fuck! It's Dracula' and we give it a shot. We have fun but I feel a bit unprepared since I have to ab lib most of the plot and come up with secret plans on the fly so they can be betrayed by their NPCs. The game is much shorter than I initially anticipated and we finish up around 9:30pm, much earlier than normal. I don't feel like Aaron and Gene enjoyed this game as much as they would have enjoyed the larger campaign I made, but at least we got to play together for a bit. I appreciate the social contact at the very least.
We dismiss ourselves from game and I join CY on the couch. He is watching some cooking tutorial videos, trying to teach himself how to smoke brisket properly. I go back and forth between different apps on my phone, not really paying attention to the TV. I try to read for a bit, but we eventually settle down to sleep before I get very far. I feel good about how the day went and I'm proud of myself for getting work done on the sock and researching my projects. I feel better about my life than I did when I first woke up this morning.

Email List Marketing Secrets - Building A Responsive List
Tumblr media
The cash is actually is incorporated in the list, so the reason for taking care of your list much like your in-laws and regulations. Simply tolerating them simply to get what you would like. Effective internet marketers realize that the hidden tips for effective list marketing begins with the caliber of your link with your list.
Effective b2b lead generation is among the most significant pieces to multilevel marketing success online. If you're not might be or otherwise taking proper care of your own house you may as well be tossing money the window. It's as easy as that. The factor is, even when you are in a position to develop a massive list.
With the much focus put in online prospecting, it can be hard to determine how to handle individuals leads once you have become them. Maximizing your profits online comes lower to creating a responsive list and when you stick to the hidden secrets I will construct for you personally, you can make every subscriber count.
Look, it required me several weeks to learn to my create a highly effective list advertising campaign and also to get my list to "respond" in my experience. I'd leads that I really didn't know how to handle. I had been scared to interact together on the personal level via email and much more scared to get the telephone and give them a call. I have had the experience, so do not feel bad if you have been neglecting your list too. It is simply that nobody trained you building your list the proper way.
Getting Began
Let us enter into the fundamentals from the list marketing blueprint. To make use of these pointers you have to really come with an list. If you're not building your list yet, get began while on an auto responder service like Aweber to handle your leads and also the messages that will get sent. You are able to join the $1 trial and begin getting them manage your subscribers as well as your messages.
Here's An Excellent Training Tutorial If You're Searching For Additional Info On Building A Listing
The key aspect to building your list would be to really determine what you would like to get away from your list. Would you like to turn leads directly into more reps for the multilevel marketing chance? Are you currently a joint venture partner marketing that's searching to advertise a variety of products as well as services inside a particular niche? Maybe you want to develop a pool of consumers. Every email you are writing must possess a specific purpose so know just what you need to achieve if your first email message.
Follow-Up Versus. Broadcast Messages
Now talking about e-mail...it's very important To not use pre-canned follow-up messages. I began building my list with several weeks of "default" messages in the prospecting system I had been part of also it literally wiped out my list. As many folks when i had subscribing I'd unsubscribing too. When I was opting directly into other marketers lists, I observed which i was delivering the same emails because they were. It clicked! When I learned hard way, you create a strong list because they build a far more personal relationship together with your subscribers. You have to enable your subscribers in and also the sooner you open the greater they'll have the ability to interact with yourself on an individual level that consequently opens them as much as having faith in your recommendations and demands.

How to Fix Tumblr and where I’ll be
Where to find me.
I’ll keep my tumblr up as long as the site is viable, but you can find me other places too. I’ll be posting fanart, fancomics, fanfic, ect.
Pillowfort (new fancomic coming tomorrow)
Personal twitter
Art only twitter
Ao3
I don’t know if this post will get shadowbanned, so reblogs are greatly appreciated!
I was thinking too, Verizon cares so much about advertisers? Don’t give them any. As long as this ban is up, don’t just email verizon. Don’t click on any ads to products through here. Not shows, books, physical goods, ads for movies, anything. I’m not saying boycott the products, oh no. They want to show the people advertising their ads work. So don’t let them have that. If you get anything advertised, like say hulu? Don’t click on their through link. Just look it up in another browser or hulu proper. When asked how you heard about the show, don’t mention tumblr. Don’t mention verizon. Don’t mention yahoo. I’ll tell surveys I heard it via carrier pigeon, before I tell them I heard it from a verizon company. They like algorithms so much? Lets mess with them.
I’d urge everyone not to just logoff tomorrow (not delete unless you want to), but call your reps about SESTA/FOSTA. Make this a hot button issue. These laws are directly connected to what’s happening on tumblr and other websites now. Laws that on the surface sound like they’re mean to protect people. But do the exact opposite. They make it harder to help victims of human trafficking, and they also gutted Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act that was part of Safe Harbor. That has been around since 1996 and was a founding principle that just because someone owns a website, doesn’t mean they’ll be treated as the original poster of any illegal content. These laws changed that in regards to sexual solicitation. It doesn’t matter if the owners take action afterwards, they can be held accountable now as the original poster.
These are the laws that are actively causing the damage done to places like tumblr and facebook, and even privacy violations. This is why Microsoft earlier this year changed their policies to say they can now read people’s skype conversations, word documents, emails, ect to make sure nothing inappropriate is going on. Because all they’re doing is sweeping ANYTHING remotely adult. (How many art tutorials and figure drawings are going to get lost? Even completely sfw accounts like @senshistock got hit.)
If you want things changed, then call and make some noise about getting this repealed and something in place that actually helps people, not censors the internet.
I plan on taking part in the tumblrlogoff protest. It’s not just about p*rn (if it was I wouldn’t have been followed by at count 10+ bots since this mess began.) This is about censorship. It’s about artists, even those that fit within tumblrs guidelines, being destroyed. It’s about this ban coming in on International End Violence against Sex Workers day. It’s about everything and anything being targeted, because algorithms aren’t magic. It’s about a company that cares more about advertisers than getting rid of neo nazis. It’s about so much more than just one thing.
Tumblr communities are great at making noise and causing an upset. Lets all get LOUD.
Find more info on the protest and timezones

Kobe Bryant Saw His Greatness Mirrored in Gianna
The N.B.A. on Thursday is scheduled to announce the players chosen by Eastern and Western Conference coaches as All-Star Game reserves. On the internal calendar I keep, this is traditionally the ideal time to unveil my unofficial All-Star selections.
That won’t be happening this time.
In the wake of the horrific helicopter crash on Sunday that killed the legendary Kobe Bryant and eight others aboard, normal operations have been pretty much suspended for anyone who has anything to do with the N.B.A.
Bryant’s worldwide stature is obviously a huge part of that. He was one of the giants of this game, an immense figure globally, revered by the overwhelming majority of current N.B.A. players — and incomprehensibly struck down at the age of 41. Grief like this will not fade quickly.
It is doubly true in this case because Bryant’s 13-year-old daughter, Gianna, was on that helicopter with him.
Beloved by members of the University of Connecticut women’s basketball program, which she dreamed of joining someday, Gianna received a moving tribute from the team on Monday when it placed flowers and a UConn jersey bearing her No. 2 on the bench for an exhibition game against the United States national team.
“Mambacita is forever a Husky,” the school posted on Twitter, referring to the nickname that Kobe Bryant, the self-styled “Black Mamba,” had given the second-born of his four daughters.
Also on board were two of Gianna’s teammates from the AAU squad coached by her father: Alyssa Altobelli and Payton Chester. The lives of three teenage girls with so much to look forward were taken in the crash, along with those of Bryant; Alyssa’s parents, John and Keri; Payton’s mother, Sarah; Kobe’s assistant coach, Christina Mauser; and Ara Zobayan, who piloted the helicopter.
The list gets sadder every time it is recited.
Kobe Bryant was 17 when I met him, then freshly acquired by the Los Angeles Lakers. On Monday, I wrote about how he was convinced, from the first minute of his pro career, that he was bound for the Hall of Fame.
Bryant was equally convinced that Gianna was likewise destined for greatness. She was his ever-present companion at countless games in recent years — to watch her W.N.B.A. heroes, or the Huskies, or maybe on a special trip to see her favorite N.B.A. player: Trae Young of the Atlanta Hawks.
Perhaps by now you have seen the clip of Kobe from his visit to the “Jimmy Kimmel Live” show in 2018, telling the world that Gianna bristled any time she heard a fan suggest to her father that he and his wife, Vanessa Bryant, needed to have a boy to uphold Kobe’s legacy.
“She’s like, ‘Oy, I got this,’” Bryant said of Gianna, then 12.
The last time I saw Kobe, on Dec. 29 at Staples Center, he had never looked more joyful. Wearing a bright orange hoodie and a green ski cap to rep his hometown Philadelphia Eagles, Bryant was sitting courtside beside Gianna as they watched — make that studied — the Lakers’ LeBron James and Luka Doncic of the Dallas Mavericks going head-to-head.
Also in the building that night was God Shammgod, whose extraordinary dribbling ability made him a New York playground legend. Despite the briefest of N.B.A. playing careers, Shammgod has landed on the Mavericks’ staff as a player development coach — yet he remains so revered for his ball handling that, even in a coaching role, he has his own Puma signature shoe.
Days after that Lakers/Mavericks game, never realizing the sorrow that was looming, Shammgod told me some moving stories of his workouts with father and daughter — how he had the extraordinary opportunity to coach them both.
“I knew him when he wasn’t this Kobe,” Shammgod said. “He knew me when there was no Shammgod moves.”
In their high school days, Shammgod — then known as Shammgod Wells — wound up at an ABCD youth camp with Bryant in New Jersey. Kobe had spent some of his formative years in Italy, where his father, Joe “Jellybean” Bryant, was playing professionally, but Shammgod said Kobe’s fellow campers knew only that he had mostly played abroad somewhere.
“The boy from France,” Shammgod said. “That’s what we called him. After the first game, guys were saying, ‘Who’s this guy who actually thinks he’s Michael Jordan?’ He’s walking like Jordan, he’s doing every Jordan move, shooting all the balls.”
Bryant was clearly a special talent, but his ball handling was a weakness. Joe Bryant had noticed Shammgod’s slick handles and asked the 16-year-old if he could help Jellybean’s 15-year-old son.
Shammgod told the elder Bryant that he would be happy to work out with Kobe — at 6 the next morning. “I was thinking, ‘He’s not going to show,’” Shammgod said. “I get there and he’s already there.”
A bond was forged, and the two remained close. The friendship endured even as Bryant rose to stardom and his dribbling mentor was forced to scour the globe for jobs (in Poland, China, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Croatia) after an N.B.A. career that lasted just 20 games with the Washington Wizards in 1997-98.
During the All-Star break last February, Shammgod received an urgent summons from Bryant to Southern California. Kobe was now coaching Gianna’s travel team and wanted to introduce her and the rest of the squad to the move known in hoop parlance as “The Shammgod” — which requires the dribbler to bring the ball to the side with one hand to get the defender off balance, then snatch it back with the opposite hand to execute a crossover dribble. Oklahoma City’s Chris Paul and the Nets’ Kyrie Irving are two of the most accomplished modern practitioners.
Shammgod spent two days at Bryant’s Mamba Sports Academy in Thousand Oaks, Calif.
“When I say that’s all he wanted to do is dribbling, that’s all he wanted to do,” Shammgod said. “From 10 to 12 in the morning, then from 2 to 4. These girls were dribbling four hours straight without shooting the basketball.”
One-on-one tutorials with Gianna would soon follow. Shammgod said they had worked out about a dozen times over the past year. Kobe wanted to fly him in more often, but Shammgod said he had to remind him occasionally, “I work for the Mavs and I can’t leave.”
When the trio huddled at that Dec. 29 game at Staples, Gianna excitedly told the story of how she “did the Shammgod on this girl” in a recent game.
“She was so locked in,” Shammgod said. “Her mind-set was just like his mind-set.”
That was evident in a 2019 glimpse of Gianna on camera with the Las Vegas CBS affiliate during a trip to watch that season’s opener for the W.N.B.A.’s Las Vegas Aces. Explaining her fascination with film study, Gigi could not have sounded much more like her father when she said, “More information, more inspiration.”
Those of us who were there for the start of the Kobe Bean Bryant experience and watched him grow up can’t help but flash back to those early days now. Even though the journalism handbook says we’re supposed to be detached and unemotional — even at times like this — Bryant’s sudden death has been a gut punch for many scribes like me who covered him closely over the past two decades.
What messes me up most, though, is when I start thinking about Gianna Maria-Onore Bryant, her two teammates on that chopper and the shattered families that have to try to move on without them.
Gianna, Alyssa and Payton — gone at an age just a few years younger than Kobe was upon his league-shaking arrival in the N.B.A. So, so unspeakably cruel.
This newsletter is OUR newsletter. So please weigh in with what you’d like to see here. To get your hoops-loving friends and family involved, please forward this email to them so they can jump in the conversation. If you’re not a subscriber, you can sign up here.
In tribute to Kobe Bryant and his second of two jersey numbers, we present a 24-item assemblage of standout statistics from his career with the Lakers.
18
Bryant was the youngest player in N.B.A. history when he made his regular-season debut for the Lakers on Nov. 3, 1996, at 18 years and 72 days old. A future teammate with the Lakers, Andrew Bynum, eventually became the youngest player in league history at 18 years and six days old when he made his debut in 2005.
4
Only four players — all big men — made the jump directly from high school to the pros before Bryant and Portland’s Jermaine O’Neal were selected in the 1996 N.B.A. draft. Those four predecessors: Moses Malone, Darryl Dawkins, Bill Willoughby and Kevin Garnett. Shawn Kemp sat out a year after graduating high school in 1988 before he was drafted in 1989 by Seattle.
1,346
Both of the Lakers’ rookies selected in the first round of the 1996 N.B.A. draft — Bryant (1,346) and Derek Fisher (915) — rank in the top five in club history in games played.
7
Bryant started only seven games in his first two N.B.A. seasons.
4
Bryant’s four air balls in a 1997 playoff game in Utah — one at the regulation buzzer and three in overtime — came against the same Jazz franchise he riddled for 60 points in his final N.B.A. game on April 13, 2016.
3
The Lakers’ championships in three consecutive seasons — 1999-2000, 2000-01, 2001-02 — represent the league’s only three-peat this century. The Michael Jordan-led Chicago Bulls had three-peats twice in the 1990s (1990-91 through 1992-93 and 1995-96 through 1997-98).

How to Train Clients Who Have Back Pain
You’ve heard that 80 percent of adults will experience back pain in their lives. Chances are, you’ll work with some of them. While few trainers are qualified to diagnose or treat back problems, every trainer can make it better by developing their clients’ core stability.
In fact, this is the first thing I tell those clients: Stop stretching your lower back.
Stretching aids mobility, and if the pain is rooted in instability—abnormal movement between the vertebrae—then moving the area more is not going to help.
For that, you need safe, low-intensity exercises to improve three aspects of core stability:
Lumbar-spine positional awareness
Motor control
Glute strength
At best, you’ll help ease your client’s low-back pain, and at worst, you’ll do no harm.
READ ALSO: Seven Myths About Low-Back Pain
1. Lumbar-spine positional awareness
The strategy: Find a neutral spine
Poor posture is linked to back pain. So it makes sense that poor posture awareness is as well. You have to be aware of problematic patterns before you can fix them.
The trick is to encourage your client to focus on what he’s feeling. Because you can’t see your low back during exercise, you have to feel what’s happening back there instead.
That learning process is best done while lying on the floor or a treatment table. This provides support and allows for instant tactile feedback from the low back and hips.
The following sequence is designed to help your client find a neutral spine position. As you walk your client through it, be sure to check in with him to see if the pain is the same, better, or worse.
Your cues:
“Using your hips, arch your back up away from the floor.” If your client looks at you like you just asked him to solve for X, tell him to arch his back enough for you to slide a hand underneath.
“How does your back feel?”
“Now press your low back flat against the floor.” If you actually did slide your hand under his low back—I often do—you can cue him to squish your hand.
“How does your back feel?”
“Now arch your back slightly, and brace your abs like I’m going to punch you in the stomach. Don’t hold your breath, just brace for a punch.” (At this point, I like to haul back and give the client a threatening look. It’s one of the little jokes that helps me through a long day of training.)
Typically, a neutral spine eliminates or significantly reduces the pain and, in my experience, gives the client hope that pain management is possible. Most people find that a flatter back position (posterior pelvic tilt) feels better. But keep in mind that a neutral spine may look a bit different for each person.
CRITICAL DETAIL: Have your client focus on being deliberate with the movements. If your client is distracted and going through the motions without intention, he’s wasting his time (and yours). But if your client is deliberate, he stands to benefit greatly.

2. Motor control
The strategy: Perform core-stability moves
Core stabilization gets at the root of the problem for most types of back pain. After all, the abdominals’ primary job is to stabilize the lower back. So let that be your focus during the three movements shown in the video below.
All three moves are done lying on the floor, starting from a neutral spine position. When setting this position, make sure the ankles, knees, and hips are aligned. Placing the feet too close or too wide can promote movement in the low back. Remember, when the hips move, so does the low back.
youtube
Bracing and marching
Move slowly and deliberately. Cue your client to focus on the brace, especially when switching legs.
Don’t march too high. The core will be challenged as soon as the foot leaves the ground, and marching too high may alter the low-back position.
Keep a neutral spine throughout. If your client loses the neutral position, have her stop and reset. Don’t let her keep marching while you check Instagram.
Bracing with arms overhead
Don’t arch the back. If your client can’t touch her hands to the floor without arching her back, have her go as low as she can without arching.
Don’t let the hips rock. This means that the client isn’t stabilizing properly. Cue her to focus on the brace.
Bracing with alternating flies
Don’t let the hips rock. Again, this means the client isn’t stabilizing. Have her brace hard to keep her hips still during the upper-body movement.
Press shoulder blades into the floor. As each arm moves out to the side, make sure the opposite shoulder blade stays down. The goal is core stabilization, not shoulder range of motion.
CRITICAL DETAIL: Keep sets shorter and more frequent. (Think 10 sets of three, not three sets of 10.) This is how you improve motor control. Your client may be inclined to get into a groove and just keep going. Discourage this. Limit reps to five, max, and after each set, have the client stop and rest for a few seconds. Then walk her through the sequence of finding a neutral spine before beginning the move again.

3. Glute strength
The strategy: Start with the bridge
People with low-back pain often have weak glutes. To shore up those muscles, I like to start with the glute bridge. The classic move is not only a useful assessment tool but also a low-risk way to teach glute engagement while training core stability.
But there is one catch: Teaching the bridge to clients with low-back pain often triggers the pain, at least initially. That’s because they tend to lose their neutral position as soon as they raise the hips.
Here’s how I explain it to my clients:
“When you’re lying down, your body is supported by the ground. Most of your muscles are relaxed. If you struggle to maintain your neutral spine when you’re lying down, you have zero chance of doing it when you’re sitting, standing, walking, bending, twisting, or lifting.”
This helps illustrate how critical these exercises are, not just in the gym, but in all aspects of your life.
READ ALSO: Don’t Let Your Clients Butcher These Three Exercises
When setting up the bridge, don’t neglect any details. They all matter. For a quick video tutorial, click here.
Get the client into a hook-lying position (a fancy name for the bridge’s starting position): lying down with the knees bent and feet flat on the floor.
Make sure the ankles, knees, and hips are aligned.
Walk your client through the sequence of finding a neutral spine position. The final step—the ab brace—is vital. It helps the client maintain a neutral spine throughout the move.
Press the heels into the floor and squeeze the glutes. At this point, that might be all the client can do. If that’s the case, you’ll simply have the client alternate squeezing and relaxing the glutes while keeping the abs braced.
If the client is able to move even partway through the bridge without pain, instruct him to move only through pain-free motion. Stop just short of pain, even if that’s barely high enough to slide a piece of paper underneath.
On the lowering phase, the glutes can relax briefly, but the abs must stay tight. The only reason to relax the abs is to restart the neutral-spine sequence, not a bad idea from time to time.
A common mistake: Many people will push through their toes instead of their heels, engaging the quads more and causing horizontal movement. To fix this, you can slide a foam roller under the upper back. (Check out this video for setup and execution.) If the client pushes with his toes, the roller will move. Just keep in mind this does allow for a slightly greater range of motion.
CRITICAL DETAIL: Manage fatigue. It’s not uncommon for my clients to do just two or three sets of three reps. That may sound absurd, but when the goal is pain-free movement, quality-over-quantity is the best approach. You may need to be the voice of reason. A motivated client is great at hard work, but not restraint. Your job in these cases isn’t to push your client but to slow him down.

Final thoughts
Treating lower-back pain is a bear. It doesn’t resolve quickly, and anyone who says otherwise is lying to you or someone you know.
The strategies above may take weeks or months to resolve the issue. But in the meantime, if done properly, they’re unlikely to increase the pain.
However, if you don’t feel comfortable trying them, then don’t. Refer out. Build your network and reach out to physical therapists or other clinicians in your area.
Years ago, anytime I had a client referral from a physical therapist, I would call the therapist and ask questions. The clients loved it. It made them feel as if they were being taken care of. And more important, they were.

How to Project Manage Even the Worst Kind of Work
I love solving problems. And pretty much every kind of work I do — from marketing to copywriting to project management to video production to creative writing — is, at its roots, the act of creatively solving a problem.
But solving problems requires a clear understanding of every variable involved… and sometimes that’s not always possible.
In fact, there’s one type of work that I hate to do, but it’s also the only kind of work that will help me grow and accomplish new things. What a perfect catch-22, right?
So what is this nightmare type of work?
Any work whose scope I don’t know completely before I begin.
In project management terms, this could mean a gig that involves any of the following:
No clear deadlines
No clearly-defined responsibilities for each team member
Highly subjective components that will need to survive multiple rounds of review
“We thought we needed X, but it turns out we really need Y.”
“We thought we needed X, but it turns out we really need X+Y.”
Whether I’m doing these as an independent contractor, a consultant, or an employee, each of these situations is a recipe for an ulcer. (If you’re nodding right now, it’s because you’ve survived your fair share of these same types of projects and you’re hoping you’ll never end up in those leaky boats again. Keep reading; there’s a solution at the end.)
But there’s one more aspect to a project that’s even worse for me than any of those, and I bet you feel the same:
Any work where I don’t yet know what I don’t know.
I’ll give you an example.
At my last day job, I was put in charge of getting our company set up for a huge trade show. There was just one problem: I’d never done that before. Not only did I not know the answers to a whole lot of brand new questions, but I didn’t even know what questions I should be asking.
Was this an interesting challenge? Absolutely.
But it also felt like a crushing black hole, because I literally had no idea where the edges of this task were, and all those “unknown unknowns” made me feel like I was completely out of control of the situation.
Now, I should mention that I’ve also done a slew of crazy and complicated things in my life. I became a radio DJ with zero experience, I moved across the country in a car by myself, I filmed a series of safety training videos in active steel mills, and I launched a web series years before YouTube existed. Figuring out the unknown is not beyond me, and it can often be exhilarating.
But.
In each of those cases I mentioned, I had two very important things: help, and a clear understanding of the scope (or lack thereof).
When I became a DJ, I was trained by people who’d already been doing it. It was new and unknown to me, but they gave me hands-on experience and clarified the scope of what we couldn’t and couldn’t do (or get away with).
When I moved across the country (in 1999, before the days of smartphones), I had maps. I may not have driven down those roads before, but I understood the scope: I knew where I was headed, where the roads led, and where they ended.
When I was filming videos in steel mills, I may never have been inside one before, but I had a corporate contact who was escorting me around and who could negotiate certain filming details with the machine operators, and I had a clearly-defined shot list so I knew exactly what we had to get done each day.
When I started a web series, there were no rules about what you could or couldn’t do online, so the sky was the limit… and I probably would have been paralyzed by choice at that point, but the cast I’d assembled and our access to specific locations helped define what the show would become.
In other words, although there were plenty of unknowns, and plenty of skills I’d need to learn in order to be good at these new gigs, I had access to help and I could see the borders of what was possible / necessary, so I viewed all those unknowns as fun experiments to conduct and interesting problems to solve, rather than sources of misery.
Thus, when I had to make sense of our trade show task, I did the same thing that had made sense for me in all those previous instances: I found help, and I established a scope.
In that particular case, I managed a team of sales reps, product managers, trade show booth designers, and liaisons from our PR agency. We each had clearly-defined roles, and every time a new question came up the responsibility of finding out an answer was assigned to one of us. We had a weekly progress call in which every action item was reviewed, and we shared documents where all our sub-tasks and their statuses were clearly visible — and if a new task popped up, it got added and delegated.
Did we need to develop new skills or strengthen existing ones in order to get the job done? Of course — but we did so within a clearly-defined context.
Did everything go completely smoothly? No, but we learned as we went.
Was the trade show a success? Yes. We even repeated that effort on a smaller scale at two more shows thereafter, because now the whole process was no longer an unknown: now it was just a series of variables with a clearly-defined scope.
Now it was manageable.
Now the unknowns were all known.
What Does This Mean for You?
If you only ever take jobs or do work that you’ve already figured out, you’ll never grow. You’ll just keep running in place until you’re obsoleted. But taking risks and trying new things can feel daunting for a variety of reasons, including that terrifying haunted house of unknown unknowns.
But those unknowns only seem scary because they’re nebulous and ill-defined — so defang them by defining them.
If, like me, your stomach drops when you realize you don’t know everything you need to know in order to complete a job, there’s a way to fix that. (And it’s not “defer the whole thing for as long as humanly possible,” which is still my first reaction almost every time it comes up.)
Here’s what I do when I find myself in this situation now:
Figure Out What Success Looks Like — and Get Specific. Is a client’s goal to “develop a marketing plan,” or to “develop an 18-month marketing plan with must-have and nice-to-have budget variations”?
Figure Out the Hierarchy. Who’s in charge, who’s here to help, who absolutely must sign off on what along the way, and who can be ignored or overruled if push comes to shove?
Set Deadlines. Even if no one is asking for them. (And especially if people are asking to not have them.)
Get Everyone Using the Same Documents. On one recent gig, we had a 5-person team and a series of Word docs that were ballooning in size and variation — v2, v2b, v3edit — all flying back and forth through email. I asked if there was a reason why we weren’t using Google Docs to eliminate versioning. “We’ve never done that before.” Was there a rule against it? No. So we used Google Docs and saved our sanity.
Figure Out What We Don’t Have Answers for Yet. These are the “known” unknowns. Your trade show booth space is 24 feet x 24 feet? Great. So how large are your booth components? Who’s working at which demo station at which demo times? Which direction will most foot traffic be coming from? Those are known unknowns, because you know which variables are in play.
Figure Out What We Don’t Know at All. These are the “unknown unknowns.” You don’t have a name for the product we’re demonstrating yet, so you don’t have a marketing plan or even a color scheme in place? Okay, those are a lot of unknown unknowns, and that’s dangerous because those are the ones that can screw up your scope and force even your known unknowns to shift. FIX THESE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.
Figure Out If I Need to Learn Any New Skills. You want me to rewrite your website’s copy? Sure. You want me to also publish that copy by accessing your CMS which I’ve never used before? Hang on, let me grab this online tutorial and some Ibuprofin…
Break the Process of Answering Unknowns or Learning Skills into Schedule-able Sub-Tasks. You don’t know what your entire marketing plan is yet, but you have a trade show coming up in ten weeks? Great; here are all the specific steps between “I don’t know what my marketing plan is” and “Hey, here’s my finished marketing plan.” Get each of those steps scheduled into your master checklist and assign the accomplishing of each sub-task to an actual human. Now, instead of a black swirl of confusion, you have a concrete list of answerable questions with deadlines attached.
Life is still full of unknown unknowns, but at least now you have a blueprint for scoping them.
Doesn’t seem so scary in the light, does it?

38.3
A conversion rate of 38.3 percent in 2002-03 marked Bryant’s most successful season from the 3-point line.
35.4
Bryant’s highest single-season scoring average was 35.4 points per game in 2005-2006, the Lakers’ second season after trading away Shaquille O’Neal.
16,866
Bryant scored 16,866 points and won three of his five championships wearing No. 8 through his first 10 seasons.
16,777
He scored 16,777 points and won two championships wearing No. 24 over the final 10 seasons of his career.
20
Bryant’s 20 consecutive seasons with the Lakers left him one shy of the N.B.A. record for playing with only one team: Dirk Nowitzki’s 21 seasons with the Dallas Mavericks.
14
No other Laker played more than 14 seasons (Jerry West and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar).
81
Bryant scored 81 points against the Toronto Raptors on Jan. 22, 2006.
33
Bryant’s eruption against the Raptors, the second-highest scoring output in league history behind Wilt Chamberlain’s 100-point game in 1962, came just 33 days after Kobe scored 62 points in three quarters against the Dallas Mavericks.
220
Bryant appeared in 220 career playoff games, which equates to more than two and half seasons of extra wear and tear.
4
The Lakers missed the playoffs in each of Bryant’s last four seasons.
35.6
Bryant averaged just 35.6 games played over his final three seasons following his torn left Achilles’ tendon in April 2013.
11
The 60 points Bryant scored in his farewell outing beat the previous record for an N.B.A. player in his last official season by 11 points. Boston’s Larry Bird scored 49 points on March 15, 1992.
1
Bryant is the only player in league history to have two jersey numbers (No. 8 and No. 24) retired by one franchise.
18
Bryant’s 18 N.B.A. All-Star appearances are one shy of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s record 19.
3
Bryant was voted in by fans as an All-Star starter in his third season with the Lakers and in each of the subsequent 17 seasons.
$328,238,062
The value of Bryant’s contracts over 20 seasons with the Lakers, according to Basketball Reference, was nearly $330 million.
0
Bryant and LeBron James never met in a playoff game. James has made nine trips to the N.B.A. finals, winning three titles.
5-2
Bryant posted a career record of 5-2 in the N.B.A. finals, winning five championships in seven appearances.
