drunken confessions

March 11, 2022

Lex was flirting with a boy from the Michigan football team in the kitchen of the Junior/Senior Hockey house, a huge party being thrown after the win the Umich hockey team had earlier that day.

Lex sat on the kicthen counter and the boy, Will was standing next to her leaning against the counter, staring at her as his hand was inching closer to her, “You know your goal was insane tonight.” Will looked at the girl with a flirtatious smirk.

Lex hummed looking away from the boy taking a sip from her cup, “I know.” Lex knew it was insane goal that she scored tonight making the team win in overtime.

“Lexie!” Frank Nazar called out waking into the kitchen looking for his friend.

“Yeah Frankie?” Lex looked towards Frank as he rushed towards her, Lex setting her cup onto the counter.

“It’s Rutger.” Frank quickly explained, making Lex nod and smoothly jumping off the kitchen counter in her black heels.

“Where is he.” Lex asked as they walked out of the kitchen ignoring Will who was calling her name after her.

Frank gently put a hand on her arm taking her to the Den where no one was aloud to be at from party besides players from the hockey team. A few of the players were in the the den all looking over a mumbling Rutger who was on the couch laying down.

Lex quickly walked in her black leather pants and black lace corset bending down in front of where Rutger’s head was laying on the couch, “Hey buddy.” She brushed his hair from his forehead, “Wanna go home now?” Lex knew Rutger isn’t the best at handling his liquor and ends up passing out somewhere so the team likes to be careful not wanting him to pass out somewhere not around any of them. Lex tends to be one to take care of Rutger most times when he’s drunk as he tends not to listen to anyone else while he is drunk.

Rutger eyes opened and silly drunken smile formed on his face, “OLLIEEEE!” He leaned forward his forehead hitting her chest.

Lex looked down slighty feeling her heart pound from the nickname and the touch from Rutger before shaking her head ignoring the feelings and the looks she knows she is getting from her teammates that are in room and preparing for all of the chirping she knows she going to get tomorrow.

“Alright big guy let’s get you home.” She put an arm under his arm wrapping it around his back as Luke pushed Rutger’s legs off the couch making Rutger sit up as Luke put an arm around Rutger as well, picking him up with Lex.

“You guys good?” Gavin Brindley asked the two as they got Rutger up and started to walk with him.

“Yeah we’re good.” Luke Hughes nodded in thanks before continuing the walk with Rutger and Lex, out of the party and house to the outside, getting fresh air as they walked to the house next door the Freshman/Sophomore Hockey house, the two ignoring all of Rutgers drunken mumbling and Luke smirking slighty seeing Rutger lean mostly against Lex.

Lex unlocked the door of the house and turned the lights on closing the door behind them, Lex and Luke shared a dreadful look knowing Rutger room is up on the third floor, they started dragging a half asleep Rutger up two flights of stairs both sighing in relief seeing his door, they opened the door walking him over to his bed as Lex pulled back the covers from his bed before setting Rutger in his bed.

Lex sat on the edge of the bed and started untying his white Nike air force ones and taking them off, setting them onto the floor.

Lex looked up hearing Rutger mumbling seeing his eyes open and he was looking at her, “so pretty.” Rutger leaned forward gently grabbing one of her strands of curled hair, “So so pretty.”

Luke who had went to the medicine cabinet grabbing medicine for the morning raised an eyebrow seeing the blushing look on Lex’s face, he set the stuff on Rutgers nightstand, “Your good here Lexa?”

“All good Lukey go back to the party i know you have a girl waiting for you!” Lex smirked teasingly towards her best friend, Luke fondly rolled his eyes leaning down kissing Lex’s cheek platonically before starting to head out but not before hearing how soft of a voice Lex used to talk to Rutger, he smiled shaking his head wondering how long it was gonna take for Lex to admit what she felt for Rutger.

“Why don’t you try to get some sleep Rut?” Lex softly spoke as she gently brushed her hand through Rutger’s fluffy hair, knowing that helps Rutger fall asleep.

“Why won’t you love me?” Rutger looked at Lex pouting with glossy eyes.

“What?” Lex furrowed her eyebrows looking at him, “What do you mean?”

Rutger huffed, “I give you so many hints and you never do anything back, but you were flirting with stupid Will.” Rutger pouted looking at his best friend, who he just wanted to date.

Lex opens and closed her mouth before hesitantly asking, “Is that why you got so drunk tonight?”

Rutger huffed again seemingly sad, jealous and annoyed, “Of course it is. You weren’t giving me any attention, i just want you to love me back.” Rutger words trailed off as his eyes slowly closed and his head fell to the side.

Lex looked at Rutger who was now peaceful sleeping after admitting his feelings for her, confusing her even more.

Lex has always been very adamant about never feeling anything or being with a hockey player ever, but Rutger has always made that difficult. Lex knew the last few months especially, she felt something for Rutger and she’s been trying to see if it would go away, hoping it was just silly crush but she knows it probably won’t ever will.

The only good thing is she knows Rutger never remembers anything when he is drunk so it gives her sometimes to figure out her feelings some more, because Rutger isn’t worth losing as a best friend because of her feelings and she loves playing hockey with him and she never wants to mess that up.

Lex got up off the bed pulling the covers over him taking one more glance at his peaceful face before walking out of the room leaning against the door releasing a breath she didn’t know she was holding before heading down the hallway into her room.

It was supposed to be the happiest day for her, she just won gold at the olympics again, breaking history and accomplishments dreams she never thought were possible to accomplish. It was supposed to be a day she was going to celebrate all night but instead it was a day that she knew was coming.

Fredrick and Vera were two peas in pod since the moment they met, the two connecting in a way that was just ethereal.

They quickly become one of the best pairs in history. Most days were spent together training, laughing, smiling, spinning around the ice together.

They grew up together as their friendship grew with them. Fredrick and Vera had a beautiful connection anyone could see it by the way Fredrick treated Vera with love and affection, the way he always was softly touching her, always gently picking her off the podium, Fredrick never once dropping her ever, The wha Vera would light up around him, the way she always relaxed fully again him, how Vera talked about him whenever someone asked about.

Fredrick and Vera just had a connection that was priceless and special and it slowly turned into something more even. In January of 2020 they admitted what they felt for each other and it just grew from their, it was so natural and passionate between the two anyone would think they would be together forever.

Except they weren’t.

Vera never knew when it changed but it did. One day, slowly but surely the sweet boy who use to bring her flowers and make her laugh turned into someone she couldn’t ever recognize a flash of. The boy she fell in love with was gone.

Vera noticed the way he slowly moved into the guest room and on the road suddenly ever room had two bed. The once loving and affectionate touches became nonexistent, the only time she felt his touch was when they were on the ice. And the once sweet comments and lovingly words she received turned into cold condescending words or pure ice cold silence and ignoring anything they came out of her mouth.

Vera noticed it at the end of the summer of 2021 they had been together for a year and half and everything was great until it wasn’t anymore.

Eventually the more she was treated this way she noticed she was falling out of love with him, and at the end of the day she could handle losing his love and losing being in love with him but she missed her best friend.

Vera planned to split up their partnership after the Olympics were over because she was done trying fighting to save something that he doesn’t even want to save.

She knew she made the right decision when they went to sign their contract for the next year of being pairs when she read the requirements. He wanted her to pay for everything. Everything for skating or to do with skating was to be payed by her. The money they receive from winning would not be spilt but would go all to him and Fredrick had the finally say on everything.

Vera slowly looked up from the contract looking right into Fredricks eyes as she picked the contract up ripping it down the middle, “No.”

“What why not?” Fredrick angrily snapped, the lawyer looked between his two clients nervously, having seen the requirements but was told by Fredrick they both wanted them.

“No i won’t sign this. I won’t sign another contract to continue being your pair.” Vera slowly stood up still maintaining eye contact, “You forgot something Fredrick, i never needed you. But you have always needed me.” Vera turned around walking towards the door, hiding the heartbreak from showing on her face.

“You’ll regret this.” Fredrick yelled towards her back slamming his hands on the table. Not ever been known to control his temper.

Vera held the door knob in her hands before turning around, “No i wont.” She turned around ready to leave before she turned her head once more to see the fumes coming from Fredrick, “Oh and if you couldn’t tell, we’re over.” Vera shut the door behind her walking out the hotel confrence room heading straight to the elevator, she clicked her phone on calling to have her plane ready in a hour to go back to California.

Vera walked down the hall to her hotel quickly opening the door slamming it behind her, sliding down against the door hitting the floor burying her face into her hands.

Apollo and Aries jumped off the bed where they were sleeping and ran right to their mother, Aries nudged his nose into her hands and Apollo leaned his body on Vera’s side.

“Thank you my loves.” Vera whispered to her two babies cuddling with them needing the comfort more than ever. She took a few minutes to just hold her dogs before she gently let go of them getting up and starting to pack up their stuff, she packed all of her stuff back into her large suitcase and all of her dogs stuff into their suitcase she clicked on the leashes for her dogs before exiting the hotel room with the two suitcase, her backpack on her back, her purse on her shoulder and both of her dogs on the leashes.

Vera walked out of the hotel into the car that was waiting for her, thanking the driver who took took her bags before hopping into the back with her two dogs.

The drive was quick to the the airport and she quickly climbed up the steps into her plane, nodding at her employees before heading to her bedroom she has in the back of the plane she closed the door and un clicked Apollo and Aries leashes and sat on the bed pulling her knee to her chest resting her forehead on her knees feeling both of her boys sit on either side of her. Aries layed his head on her arm looking at his mom with sad eyes giving her a small whine, Apollo leaned his whole body weight into Vera’s and licking his mom’s arms.

Vera remembered meeting Frederick when they were young, only just kids and when they went onto the ice together for the first time they just clicked and they knew they had to be partners, their connection was so natural and so easy for them. It was a connection many other skater’s envied wanting to be that connected to their partner.

Vera and Fredrick had met Alexandra who quickly became their other best friend, the three quickly became a trio. Becoming each other’s safe space, where they didn’t feel as the whole world was watching. Alexandra and Vera becoming platonic soulmates the two pushing each other to only become better on the ice. Alexandra and Fredrick finding a sibling in each other and having a very teasing relationship.

Traveling the world and spending most your time on the ice you tend to grow close with the people you skate with and Alexandra and Vera don’t know what was wrong with Fredrick but Alexandra slowly stopped respecting her once best friend that was a big brother to her when she saw how he was treating her best friend.

Alexandra could see how hard Vera just wanted their best friend back and she only hoped that Vera will get her happy ending one day.

Vera woke up hours later running a hand through her hair seemingly to fall asleep with her dogs cuddled with her and checked the time realizing the flight was over half way done and decided it was time to get away from California and fast and she knew exactly where she wanted to go.

New Jersey.

New Jersey a place she’s always loved staying in and the biggest factor as it has one of her most favorite people in the world living their her big brother Nico, and the Devils who have all become like family to her and one of her closet friends Jack.

She pulled up the apartment complex she knew Nico and Jack lived and quickly found an apartment that would be perfect for her and her dogs and quickly applied for the apartment and was surprised when her request was immediately approved and the contracts quickly emailed over for her to sign and put into the money and she would already have the apartment. Vera quickly finished everything letting out a small smile seeing how quickly everything fell into place.

She pulled out the book she was currently reading to past by the rest of the time and before she knew the plane was landing and she was waking up her dogs putting their leashes back on and grabbing her backpack and purse.

She walked down the stairs to the plane heading into the car that was waiting for her and got into the car, the drive to her house was quick and she quickly thanked the driver before unclipping the leashes of the dogs and walking into her house in California, one of her more favorite places and had made some of her closest friends here and the first place she bought a place not rented.

She breathed out a sigh of being home and for once she thanked Fredrick for having moved out a while ago so she didn’t have to worry about him coming over to get anything that is his.

She took out her phone as she walked up her stairs towards her room and texted her group chat with Trevor and Jamie telling them she is home and she knows they don’t have a game today or tomorrow before throwing her phone on her bed and heading into her bathroom and taking a long shower.

Vera walked out of the bathroom with her hair freshly washed and brushed before grabbing a pair of grey sweatpants and a purple loose long sleeve, she slipped on a pair of fluffy socks and walked down stairs and across the long hall to the living room and throwing the throw blanket across her lap as Aries and Apollo layed on both sides of her.

Vera heard the door open and knew exactly who it was especially when her dogs tails started excitedly wagging.

“Honey we’re home!” Trevor’s voice echoed through out the house.

“In here babes!” Vera called back not getting up.

Trevor and Jamie walking into the living room making Aries and Apollo jump up and run over to the two. Trevor set down the bag he brought and kneeled down petting them like crazy as Jamie softly petted the top of both their heads before looking at one of his best friends nothing the dimmed look in her eyes that has been more common recently and the way her lips were naturally more downturned.

Trevor bounced up from the dogs jumping onto Vera, “Congratulations VeeVee!” Trevor hugged his best friend tightly.

Vera tried not to think of everything that happened but she couldn’t help and starting sniffing in the hug from the comfort from her best friend, she burrowed her her head into her chest feeling the tears running down her face and her shoulder began to shake.

Jamie and Trevor looked at each other with concern, Trevor hugged her tightly as Jamie sat on the other side of them brushing a soft hand through her wet hair.

The two let Vera cry all her tears out onto Trevor’s hoodie before she slowly calmed down.

Vera lifted her head looking between her two best friends, Trevor wiped off her tears as Jamie looked her in concern, “What happened Vee?”

“He wanted to sign a contract to continue our pair and it was fucked, he wanted me to pay for everything including all of his expenses, all the earnings were to go to him and he had final say in everything, so i ripped up the contract and broke up with him.” Vera fiddled with Jamie’s hands as she told them what went down a day ago.

Trevor clenched his jaw hearing about Fredrick, Trevor having known Vera before she dated Fredrick and with Vera living mostly in California he was one of the few who truly saw how much their relationship got extremely toxic and how much Vera has been heartbroken over the last year.

Jamie frowned looking at one of his best friends, “Is that why you came home early?” He knew she was supposed to be there a few more days celebrating her gold medals.

“I had to leave.” Vera mumbled resting her head on Jamie’s shoulder while Trevor laided on top of her.

“Well i for one am glad you broke up with that asshole!” Trevor grinned looking at Vera making her let out a soft laugh.

“Of course you are ZeeZee.” Vera fondly smiled knowing how much Trevor hated seeing her in that relationship getting hurt.

“How are you feeling.” Jamie looked towards her in concern.

Vera took a deep breath, “Honestly kinda free, obviously it still hurts to think about losing him as my best friend but i’m relieved to have finally cut that part of me.” Vera for the last year as she noticed Fredrick slowly changing she had hoped everything would get fixed and she could have her best friend back but she knew she really needed to end things with him.

“Good.” Jamie kissed the top of her head.

“I got an apartment in New Jersey.” Vera blurted out into the comfortable silence.

Trevor’s head popped up from where he was laying on Vera, “What! Why?”

“I thought maybe a fresh city to live in could do some good, besides my new location will be opening there soon and Nico apartment complex had an open space and Jack will be there too.” Vera explained her thoughts to the boys.

“I think it will be good for you.” Jamie reassured her thinking a new city could be good for her.

“As long as you don’t forget about us!” Trevor pouted, “And we have a lot of games in New York and New Jersey so we will be able to see you a lot.”

“And i’m keeping my house here in California and i still have to come out here a lot anyways so it won’t be that bad.” Vera reassured the pouting Trevor.

“Alright but as long as i’m still you favorite hockey player best friend, Jack cannot past me.” Trevor looked at Vera extremely seriously making Vera and Jamie throw their heads back laughing at their silly best friend.

Lex and Rutger were laying down on her bed cuddled together, Rutger was laying on her chest burying his face and Lex was playing with his hair.

Rutger groaned as he felt his phone vibrate in pocket he leaned up grabbing his phone answering the call, “Hello?”

Rutger’s eyes widen when he relized who was calling him, he got off the bed talking.

Lex watched as he talked through the phone not seeing his face and being able to tell if it was good or bad call.

“Thank you.” Rutger let out a breath as he ended the call, he ran a hand through his hair feeling really excited.

Lex got up off the bed walking over to him, “Rut my love what’s wrong?” Her voice seemed to snap him out of his trance and he spun around with a bright smile and wrapped his arms around her spinning her around.

Lex let out a laugh as he spun them around like crazy before gently setting her back down.

Rutger was beaming as he cupped her face, “No long distance baby.” Rutger vibrated with excitement.

“What?” Lex looked at him confused titling her head to the side.

“I got traded.” Rutger told her watching her face fill with realization, “to the devils.” Rutger was apart of the Tyler Toffoli trade and while he was exicted to be part of the Jets he was even more exicted to be apart of the devils, especially since the devils are near the islanders meaning being close with Lex and three of his best friends are all at the devils or drafted their he doesn’t see a better team.

“Oh my god.” Lex let out a laugh pressing her lips to his desperately as she realized they will only be a few miles away from each other instead of almost 3,000 miles.

“You’re stuck with me.” Rutger lovingly teased her as they pulled away to catch their breaths.

“I wouldn’t have it any other way.” Lex softly smiled cupping his cheek.

introducing lex

Alexandria Olive Zegras was born February 4, 2004. She’s 5”6 and has crystal blue eyes.

She’s the youngest of her three siblings Trevor, Griffin, and Ava.

She been on the ice since she could walk and when she was younger use to play on the girls team but she was to physical when she played so she moved to the boys league and never left.

Alexandria mostly goes by Lex by most people.

Lex plays with the number 4, and mostly is a right wing but is still is an incredible center. She’s known for her incredible trick shot goals.

Lex joined the USA Hockey National Team Development Program Under 17 in 2020-2021.

She joined the USA Hockey National Team Development Program Under 18 for the 2021-2022 season.

Lex was drafted in the 2022 draft, she went second overall to the New York Islanders.

She committed to The University of Michigan for the 2022-2023 year.

She stayed at the University of Michigan for her 2023-2024 year until the hockey season was over and then went to play full time at the Islanders.

Lex has always been very passionate about photography, she always had her camera with her since a young age, she would take pictures of everything and everyone.

Lex has known the Hughes for a long time now and they are just another part of her family.

She lived with the Hughes for a few years when she playing for USA Development program.

She was only a small drive away from the Hughes house when in Collage so Luke and her drove home many times.

Luke and Lex have been best friends since the day they met when they 13, the two are platonic soulmates and are extremely close, they always gossip about everything with each other and have a very open honest friendship, they were both so happy when they realized they got drafted to teams that are close to each other and play against each other a lot during the season.

Jack has always treated Lex like another sibling and calls her his sister, was very happy knowing she will be close to him during the season.

Quinn has always absolutely adored Lex, she just worked her way into his heart and has became one of his biggest soft spots, the two love to team up and tease Trevor together.

Trevor was old enough to understand a bit better what a baby is when Lex was born, he’s always been very protective of his youngest sibling, but also been her biggest supporter.

Ava and Lex have always been close being sisters, and they are very supportive of each others life’s, whenver Lex is home Ava will drag her around to get their nails and hair done having a sister day.

Griffin and Lex have always been the two that bicker the most out of the all siblings, of course they love each other they just get on each other nerves the easier.

Lex easily got along with all of umitch hockey team and they all are really respectful to her, a few of them she’s played with for years at NTDP, and the rest she’s met watching Luke’s games. They all became like family to her.

Lex stayed in the freshman and sophomore house during her two years at Umitch, she was allowed to by having a lock on her door and her own bathroom, the house was always crazy with all of the boys but she grown to care for all her teammates so she wouldn’t change it for anything.

Lex have never been shy to hooking up with others but she made a promsie to herself to never be with someone on her hockey teams, not wanting to complicate things.

Lex has good at blocking out others hateful opinions and tend to protect herself, she tends to take a little while to warm up to people but people she’s knows for a long time she definitely the warmest with them.

Lex met Rutger in 2019 at the NTDP camp before they were put on the same team, she thought he was very sweet but that was about it she never thought of him anything more, Rutger was in awe when he saw Lex for the first time he tripped over his feet seeing the most beautiful girl he every seen.

Rutger have been crushing on Lex since the moment they met, a crush that only continues to grow the more he gets to known her, he never thought she would like him back so he never said anything about his feelings being fine to stay friends, they were on the same team for two years and then they both committed to Michigan being on the same team again.

It wasn’t until Collage that Rutger decided to slowly started flirting and hinting what he feels towards Lex. Lex reminded obvious or rather not wanting to think about their relationship being anything more to complicate things.

When Lex was drafted to the Islanders, Mat Brazal called her right away to congratulate her and they became fast friends, during training camp she stayed with Mat for the few weeks.

The team tends to have rookies be mentored with an older player and Mat asked for Lex and he’s been very supportive towards her career in the NHL and being the first woman.

When they start playing together Lex started in Mat’s line and the team knew they were going to line mates from then on, the two work amazing together.

Matt made sure Lex could fight even better than she could to make sure that even if she is smaller than most men she can easily knock them down.

When she moved to New York she got an apartment in the same building as Mat, and most nights when they are home he makes her come over for dinner.

Mat and Lex end up being roommates and seat mates when she joined the team, Mat thinking of Lex as a sister and daughter.

Luke looked out the lake house window seeing Lex sitting on the dock something that is odd as she is usually always spending time with people especially during the summer trying to spend as much time with everyone, but he could tell something was wrong every since they met back up after he left for Jersey.

Luke walked out of the house down the grass hill to the dock, he sat down next to his best friend nudging her shoulder, “Your gonna tell me why you’ve been sulking since you got here.”

Lex gruntly not even turning her head at her best friend.

“Alright fess up what’s wrong?” Luke frowned in concern.

“I like Rutger.” Lex whispered out continuing to look at the lake.

“So you finally figured that out.” Luke smugly smirked as Lex’s head whipped to her best friend in shock, “Don’t look so surprised Lexa, your my best friend, i know you and i can tell when you like a person.”

Lex scooted closer resting her head on Luke’s shoulder having truthfully missed seeing her best friend everyday, “I can’t like him.”

“And why not?” Luke patiently questioned her.

“You know i promised myself to never date a teammate or hockey player.” Lex always knew being a girl she couldn’t date a teamate she would lose a lot of respect and she didn’t want her hard word to go away for a boy.

“Okay, but we both know you couldn’t stay with a person who doesn’t love hockey.” Luke pointed out one of the main reasons Lex never stayed with people she’s been in the last, “And Rutger is perfect for you Lexa, he understands what you’ve worked for and you know he would never want to discredit that.” Luke knew how much Rutger was in love with Lex and knew Lex would be happy with him.

“I’m scared.” Lex softly admitted to Luke.

“I know.” Luke softly responded putting his arm around her shoulder, “That’s okay, but you never know until you try and do you want to miss out on something because your scared.” Lex shook her head agreeing with him, “Look i’m not saying go tell him tomorrow you’re in love with him but maybe start accepting the fact you like him and that’s okay.”

Lex nodded and closed her eyes enjoying the time with her best friend.

November 17, 2023

Lex ignored the look she knew was coming from Rutger and continued tying her skates.

“You know you can’t ignore him forever right.” Frank leaned over from where he sat in his stall next to hers whispering, Lex looked up glaring at him making Frank put his hands up in defense.

Lex finished her skates and stood up slipping on the rest of her gear and putting on her number four jersey with her embroidered A on it, and headed with her team as they headed towards the rink.

“Can we please talk after this.” Rutger softly whispered to Lex as he caught up with her. He knew she’s been ignoring him for the last week since they almost kissed.

Lex looked over seeing Rutger looking like a kicked puppy and nodded agreeing to talk before they focused on the game.

Lex was passing the puck across the ice to Rutger who took the onetimer as Lex watched him get smashed into the boards, and it felt like time stopped as she watched the way his stick slowly drop as he crumpled to the floor.

Lex barely remembers moving before she was on top of the player who had hit Rutger and she could feel the blood on her knuckles as she hit him straight across the nose before she was pulled off.

Lex stood with her team as they watch Rutger get loaded onto the stretcher in obvious pain and hurried out of Yost.

“You good to play.” Jacob mumbled to Lex knowing how she cares for Rutger.

“Let’s kick their asses.” Lex looked at her captain, determined for Rutger, for Dylan and for Mark who were both injured as well in this game.

And Michigan did just that. Lex getting the winning goal, making them win 6-4.

Lex quickly rushed a shower and changed into a pair of sweatpants and sweatshirt and saw almost all of her teammates getting dressed quickly to go see Rutger.

Lex silently handed the keys to Frank not sure if she wanted to drive this emotional and knew Frank would understand.

Lex looked out the window not even noticing they had got to the hospital until Frank gently nudged her arm, her head snapped up and saw they were there.

The whole hockey team met up with Rutger’s parents and sister as Rutger was with the doctor getting everything checked over and figuring out what the problems were.

Lex sat down next to Molly having always been close to her and grabbed her hand giving it a squeeze and Molly leaned her head on Lex’s shoulder sniffing worried for her brother.

It felt like forever before the doctor finally came out, “Good news your son is okay,” the words brought sighs of relief across the room, “Bad news he does have a punctured lung and broke rib.”

Cindy and Jim took in a sharp breath worried for their son.

“He should be awake in the morning and we given him meds to sleep through then night to start his body healing faster.” The doctor finished and excused themselves.

Rutger’s parents and Molly went into the room first spending a few minutes alone with a sleeping Rutger, before they gestured for the team all to squeeze into the room.

They all spent a few hours all huddled in the room all worried for Rutger, before Cindy told most of the team to get back to school and get some sleep. Cindy got all of the stubborn boys to head back but Lex was even more stubborn and she stayed in the chair in the room.

Frank rested his hand on her shoulder, “Want me to take you car back?” He leaned down to one of his best friends.

Lex nodded and handed her keys to him.

Cindy had Jim take Molly home wanting them to get a goodnight sleep at home.

“You care a lot for my son?” Cindy looked over at the girl she knows her son has been in love with for years and she seen her grow up.

Lex looked up at someone who’s always felt like another mother to her and knew she couldn’t lie, “I always have.” She admitted the truth.

“I know.” Cindy smiled softly having seen how much Lex has taken care of Rutger over the past few years, “He loves you, you know.”

“I know.” Lex soflty nodded knowing how much Rutger cares for her and some days she feels as if she doesn’t deserve all his love.

“Give him a chance.” Cindy softly squeezed her hand and sent Lex a motherly smile.

“I plan too.” Lex soflty smiled as she looked at sleeping Rutger and felt some tension come out of her shoulders seeing him peacefully sleeping even though he is badly injured.

November 18, 2023

“Mom?” Rutger groggily spoke feeling her hand brush his hair as he slowly woke up in the hospital bed.

“Hi honey.” Cindy McGroarty smiled softly down at her son who gave her the scare of a lifetime, “How you feeling?”

“Alright.” Rutger softly muttered back, “Where’s Mols and Dad?”

“I sent them to get something to eat.” Cindy replied, “Your teammates were all here last night but they had to go back to get some sleep, expect one wouldn’t leave the whole night and stayed with me.”

Lex was curled in one the hospital chair with a blanket draped over her, Rutger smiled softly seeing her. Cindy smiled at her son’s smitten look and knew the two would get together eventually.

A few hours had went by and the doctor had come in to talk to Rutger.

“How long am i going to be out?” Rutger desperately questioned knowing the World Junior Championship is in a few weeks.

“Six to eight weeks, depending on how fast you heal.” The doctor informed him.

Rutger head dropped and he could feel the tears fill his eyes realizing he most likely won’t be able to play, Lex frowned grabbing his free hand squeezing it tightly.

Rutger took a shuttering breath leaning his head back onto the pillows, he squeezed his hand.

His parents and sister had walked out of the room to talk more with doctor out of the room.

“Do you think i’ll be able to play?” Rutger choked out looking at Lex, his face covered in tears and the saddest frown on his face.

Lex looked at Rutger feeling her heart break seeing how devastated he is, “I think you will.” Lex had a feeling Rutger would heal in time to he able to play.

November 20, 2023

Lex went to her classes when she woke knowing Rutger was coming home today and she made sure to grab all his work as they have almost every class together.

She drove over to his parents house and knocked on the door, Cindy smiled at her as she opened the door, “Lex come in!”

Lex smiled waking in, adjusting her backpack on her shoulders, “How’s he doing?”

“Good today, think he is happy to be home.” Cindy smiled walking her down to Rutgers room, “He is pretty out of it today and been sleeping most of the day.” She opened the door to Rutger’s room and he was fast asleep in the middle of his bed.

“That’s okay, i just wanted to check on him and i brought his work so whenever he’s ready to start working on that.” Lex smiled and opened her backpack pulling out the work for Rutger and set it on his desk.

Cindy stayed at the door smiling at Lex, Lex walked over leaning down pressing a gentle kiss to his forehead before leaning up and walking back to the door.

“You can stay you know.” Cindy smiled soflty at her.

“Thank you but i should probably get back to the house and get some work done before practice later.”

“Alright, Let me walk you out.” Cindy walked with her to the front door, Cindy pulled her into a gentle hug, “Thank you for coming.”

“Course.” Lex smiled back before pulling away and waking to her car.

November 21, 2023

“Are you sure you don’t mind?” Cindy asked Lex as she walked through the door.

“Really it’s not a problem i was gonna spend the day with him anyways.” Lex reassured her with a smile.

“Thank you really.” Cindy had gotten an emergency at work she had to get to and Molly was in class taking an important test and Jim had to go into work as well. Cindy knew Rutger was supposed to be not alone for a little while and she trusted Lex, “He was sleeping when i checked on him last, and thank you again.” Cindy rushed out the door.

“It’s not a problem.” Lex smiled before heading down the hallway to Rutgers room in his parents house, the door was open and she could see Rutger kinda sleeping but not fully asleep.

Lex stepped in and set her backpack on his desk and unzipped it pulling out the gift she got Rutger. Lex walked over and gently sat on the edge of the bed as Rutger’s eyes were fluttering open.

“Ollie?” Rutger mumbled with a goofy smile.

“Hey pretty boy.” Lex smiled soft brushing his hair off his forehead, “How you feeling?”

“Good.” Rutger slowly nodded before nothing something in her hands, “What’s that?”

“Uh I uh thought you might like it.” Lex rushed out setting the snow white teddy bear next to Rutger.

“It’s cute.” Rutger picked it up feeling how soft it was before looking at Lex seeing how she was avoiding his eyes and felt his heart clench in fondness for this girl, “Thank you.”

“Of course.” Lex cleared her throat, “Your stuck with just me for the day, your mom had to go into work.”

“And you came over?” Rutger titled his head looking at Lex for an answer.

“I uh planned to come over anyways and i uh got your work so you wouldn’t be behind.” Lex simply explained fiddling with her finger not enjoying how nervous she felt.

“You do care for me.” Rutger teased with a smug smiled.

Lex took a deep breath and looked up towards him, “Of course i do.”

Rutger’s eyes widen and he tried to lean up towards her, “Woah relax!” Lex quickly put her hands out stopping him from moving and made him stay put.

Rutger ignored her words and looked at her, “You care for me?”

“Of course i do Rut.” Lex softly admitted leaning closer to Rutger.

Rutger slowly breathed out in disbelief hearing the words he’s been waiting for and gently brought his hand up to cup her cheek, he smiled as Lex leaned into his touch.

He gently pulled her chin down to him, “Can i? Please?” Rutger breathed out desperately looking up at her for permission, to do the thing he’s been dreaming up for years.

Lex nodded and leaned forward connecting her lips to his in a gentle kiss.

Lex gently pulled away leaning her forehead on Rutger’s forehead.

“Took you long enough.” Rutger softly chuckled teasing her as he pressed another kiss to her lips.

“Whatever.” Lex fondly rolled her eyes.

“Lay with me.” Rutger looked at her with his puppy eyes making her nod and slowly lay next to him and rest her head gently on his shoulder.

“Will you let me take you out of date?” Rutger softly questioned, pressing a kiss to the top of her head.

“I could be persuaded.” Lex quipped back with a small smile.

“Oh i see how it is.” Rutger laughed feeling Lex let out a chuckle, “How about being my girlfriend?” Rutger nervously asked.

Lex’s eyes widen and she quickly sat up looking at Rutger, “Girlfriend?”

“Yeah.” Rutger softly nodded nervously looking at her.

“Are you sure?” Lex softly questioned.

“Alexandra Zegras i would very much like to he your boyfriend if you will have me?” Rutger gently grabbed her hand and looked at her as he spoke.

“Ok, Yeah, Yes!” Lex breathed out smiling leaning over to let Rutger kiss her again.

Rutger fondly cupped her face and smiled kissing her again.

They pulled apart resting their foreheads together and smiling at each other.

“Took you long enough.” Rutger softly teased his now girlfriend.

“I know.” Lex nodded softly pressing a soft kiss to his cheek, “I’m sorry.” She nudged her nose to his.

“It’s okay, i’ll always wait for you.” Rutger softly cooed cupping her face in her hands, he knew she hadn’t been ready in the past and was more than willing to wait for her to figure out her feelings.

“Thank you.” Lex pulled back and laid back down next to Rutger laying on his shoulder and was playing with his fingers.

Rutger could feel himself slowly falling asleep and before he knew it was fast asleep. Lex wasn’t far behind and fell asleep.

Cindy came home a few hours laters and walked into the quiet house down the hall and peaked into his room seeing Rutger and Lex cuddled together both peacefully sleeping looking content in each others arms, Cindy smiled fondly and quietly walked over to the bed and pulled up the blankets over the two and quietly walked out and closed the door behind her.

A opens their coat and, while enveloping B, slings the material around them as well.

Lex and Rutger were out walking around Ann Arbor on one of their free afternoons going to get something to eat with some of their friends.

The wind started to pick up and it was more chilly and Lex slowly started shivering not thinking it was gonna get this cold and she already hates anything to do with cold weather.

Rutger frowned seeing Lex shivering and seeing the goosebumps forming on her skin.

He unzipped his oversized black puffer and pulled a side of the jacket around Lex pulling her againt him.

Lex happily hummed feeling the warmth coming from Rutger and happily cuddled closer to him as they continued their walk.

“Awww the love birds!” Gavin teased them laughing as Lex gave him the middle finger.

lex and rutger timeline

2019-2022

When they we’re just friends and Rutger liked her, and Lex denied anything about her feelings.

Rutger was always sweet to everyone but he was extremely sweet to Lex, always giving her the last slice of pizza, letting her have the window seat if she wanted it, always offering to share his snacks with her.

Lex has always been in love with music, something she bonded over with her brother Trevor, she never lets anyone listen to her music besides Trevor and sometimes Luke but a time Rutger asked her and she didn’t have anyone problem letting him listen, now her right air-pod is specifically Rutgers.

Rutger always chose to sit next to Lex on the bus and flights and Lex never minded when he did.

Lex made string bracelets and gave one to Rutger who kept it on till it broke but it kept the broken bracket and tied it to his hockey bag and he still has it now.

Lex isn’t the biggest movie person but Rutger and her would have movie nights where he watches movie and she would work on anything in her photography.

2022-2023

When Lex slowly started to accept her feelings and Rutger flirting with her more.

When he called her Ollie for her middle name and for some reason it makes her want to melt on the spot.

Rutger asking her specifically to hang out just the two of them alot more often, they found a diner a few minutes from campus that had the best chocolate pancakes, the two only go their together and will go at least once a week sometimes spending hours studying their.

Rutger barley ever looked at any other girls not wanting to mess up a chance with her. Lex slowly stopped seeing anyone else, More so after her first year of collage, once summer of 2023 came around she didn’t sleep or see anyone else as she had fully accepted her feelings for Rutger and didn’t want to be with anyone else.

She called him pretty boy for the first time and Rutger blushed bright red and was stuttering like crazy.

Lex absolutely loves hot chocolates or any drink with chocolate, she would only drink that it if she could, so most days her and Rutger walk and get a drink together together, as they have basically every class together except one.

When they were sitting in a couch together talking during a party and a girl came over interrupting Lex and flirting with Rutger and asking him to join her, Rutger denied and didn’t look at the girl once asking Lex to continue.

Lex doesn’t drink and she usually is the one to make sure all the boys are good after a party, and she was taking care of drunk Rutger who wouldn’t stop calling her pretty.

2024

When they are together

Lex isn’t the biggest PDA person and she knows Rutger doesn’t mind PDA so they both respect each other and Lex is fine with some PDA and Rutger respects that Lex likes to keep things she cares for private.

Lex absolutely loves when Rutger wears his glasses, one of the reasons she loves sleeping next to him she gets to see more of his glasses.

Lex loves to take photos and she found she absolutely adores taking photos of Rutger, he ends up being most of her camera roll.

The first time Rutger gets her to blush is when they are laying in her dorm togetehr and he’s tracing all of her features with his fingers and complimenting her.

There first new years kiss is in Sweden during the WJC and they end up in a photo booth together right before it turns midnight.

Lex realized quickly how much Rutger loves physical touch and it’s not like she didn’t know he didn’t but it’s a lot different in a relationship and he is the more clingy one of the two but Lex has her moments.

Rutger absolutely gets her flowers all the time, just because flowers as he likes to say.

Rutger adores when Lex can’t sleep and they take late night drives listening to music and eating junk food.

When they still live at Umitch, Rutger room is actually the closest to Lex, so she leaves the door unlocked and he comes in and sleeps next to her, once they get back from Sweden he quite literally never sleeps in his own bed for the rest of the year

“Did you know your record of most points in the USNTDP was beaten tonight?” An interview asked Jack after the Devils game.

“I didn’t no.” Jack shook his head drinking form his water bottle.

“Lex Zegras beat it, she got it tonight by getting the winning goal.” The interviewer informed Jack.

“Zegras!” Jack exclaimed in shock not knowing Andy was getting close to beating him in points.

“Yeah and she’s almost at most goals ever in the USNTDP records she is in second right now.” The interviewer told Jack.

Jack proudly smiled, “I’m not surprised.” He continued the interview and when he was done, he was immediately pulling up his phone and was face timing her.

“Rowdy!” Lex smiled at the screen at her honorary brother.

“Andy.” Jack fondly smiled at his favorite sibling, “A little birdie told me something about you today.” Jack raised an eyebrow at Lex.

“Did they?” Lex smirked back.

“Heard you beat my record.” Jack nonchalantly replied.

“I did.” Lex nodded looking at Jack.

“Well done Andy.” Jack proudly smiled at her, “There’s no one i would rather beat my record.”

Lex let out a laugh of relief and smiled at the screen, “Thank you Jacky. I’ve got to go but i’ll talk to you soon?” Lex could hear her teammates calling her.

“Of course.” Jack smiled waving goodbye to her and hanging up.

chocolate chip pancakes

August 29, 2022

Rutger walked out of his dorm room down the hallway and knocked on the last door, leaning on the wall next to the door.

Lex looked up from her phone at the knock, “Come in!” She watched as the door opened and Rutger peaked his head in before walking in and flopping down next to her onto her bed, “Hello Rut.”

“Hi Ollie.” Rutger grinned at his long time crush best friend, “Wanna go get something to eat?” Rutger having decided to slowly start giving Lex hints and maybe be able to finally ask her out.

Lex nodded her head shutting off her head, “Sure any of the boys coming with?” Lex leaned up from her bed, getting up grabbing her Birkenstocks sliding them on real quick, tucking her wallet into her jean shorts and fixing her Umich cropped zip up.

Rutger face fell in disappointment before quickly covering it with a smile, “Thought it could just be me and you?” His eyes looks hopeful at her.

Lex turned around looking at Rutger who seemed a bit off, “Sure Rut, that sounds nice.”

Rutger lit up with an even brighter smile, “Great!” Lex furrowed her eyebrows towards one of her best friends, “I mean cool.” Rutger mentally facepalmed himself for acting so werid.

“Alright buddy let’s go?” Lex asked.

“Yeah.” Rutger nodded quickly getting off her bed and heading to the door with Lex following and shutting the door behind them, they headed down the two flight of stairs and seeing the empty down stairs before heading out of the house to the parking lot closet and hoping into Rutgers car.

“So where are we going?” Lex finally broke the silence in the car, as she connected her phone to his car and played their playlist.

“I found a diner like ten minutes from school and it looks really good.” Rutger casually replied, acting like he didn’t spend a while trying to find a place to take Lex.

“Awesome.” Lex nodded skipping a song before turning her head an opening the window and feeling the cool summer breeze.

Rutger stopped at the red light turing his head looking at his best friend, the same best friend he’s had a crush on for years and never said anything, he shook his head before continuing the drive.

Rutger pulled up to the diner pulling into the parking spot, He jumped out of the car and quickly walked around opening the passenger door for Lex.

Lex looked at her best friend who’s been acting weird, “Thanks Rut.” Rutger smiled as Lex got out of car and shut the door behind her. They walked up the front steps before Rutger opened the door letting Lex walk in.

The server led them to a corner booth by the windows, Lex slide into the bench and Rutger slid into the bench across from her.

Lex excitedly gasped as she was reading the menu, Rutger looked up at her, “What?”

“They have hot chocolate!” Lex grinned widely, her favorite thing to drink has always been hot chocolate, it might also have to do with the fact she is obsessed with chocolate.

“Do they?” Rutger softly asked already knowing that they do, having looked at the menu before they came to make sure they had hot chocolate and chocolate chip pancakes knowing Lex hasn’t found a place yet in Michigan that has both.

Lex rapidly nodded looking ecstatic before gasping again, “Oh my god. They have chocolate chip pancakes too!” Lex leaned across the table as she spoke in a happy whisper before looking back down at the menu.

Rutger just smiled admiring her, no longer that worried if she catches him admiring her. He must of been admiring her for a few minutes before the waitress was already at the table and writing down Lex’s order down, Lex called out Rutger’s name gaining his attention, “Rut what do you want?” She smiled at her best friend.

“Ah i’ll take what she’s having.” Rutger smiled handing the menu he barely even looked at the waitress, who nodded and walked off.

“Are you okay Rut?” Lex looked at him in concern.

“Yeah of course.” Rutger shook his head with a fond smile, “How was your date?” Rutger questioned through a tight smile.

Lex scrunched up her nose shaking her head, “Bad, he was a dick.” Lex had met someone during the summer and planned a date but he was disgusting.

Rutger tired to hide his delighted smile, “I’m sorry Ollie.”

“Ehh, it’s no big deal it was just a date i wasn’t that interested anyways.” Lex shook off his apology before continuing to chat with her best as they waited for their food.

Lex took a sip of her hot chocolate happily humming at the taste, she looked up seeing Rutger softly smiling at her, “What?”

Rutger shook his head softly before reaching over and gently whipping of the whip cream on her lip, “You had a little something.” Rutger sheepishly smiled noticing the look she gave him.

Lex followed his finger with a daze before shaking her head ignoring the thoughts that just came into her head and her pounding heart.

“Thanks.” Lex smiled taking another sip of her hot chocolate. Rutger smiled nodding back drinking his hot chocolate.

Lex quickly cut up her pancake the second it was placed on the table and made a happy sound as she took the first bit of the chocolate chip pancakes, she quickly chewed her bite, “Rut we are going to be coming back.” Lex gently demanded before chewing another bite.

Rutger took a bite of the pancake and nodded, “Hell yeah these are good.” Rutger wasn’t lying they are some of the best pancakes he’s had but he wants to keep coming back with Lex.
