music from mostly 2017 but also some 2016 because why not that i have gone and enjoyed
this is MOSTLY for 2017 releases but 2016 relapses will slip in too. time is a construct or something. honestly in a grander sense this will also include music i like that i happen to listen to in 2017. wevs.
no joy - drool sucker: gross album title but so fucking lovely. so good. this was on a list of "`'noise'`" bands but this ain't noise. it's noisy. shoegazey. wonderful lady vocals and smart guitar melodies. THERE'S the bass! it was hiding under the smart guitar melodies! it's really fuzzy and barely audible! . tee hee they have a theme song
brandon can't dance - graveyard of good times: man i must just be in the damn MOOD for melodic mopey stuff. vocals are 50/50 for me. i like that he actually fucking tries to sing though. reminds me of orange cake mix or whatever the fuck that guy was called. super good guitar riff on "headspace". but there's also a song called "she loves anime" so i don't know. it's really pretty though. i don't know. revisit this.
flaming lips - oczy mlody: the name of this album makes me think of the BELA RUS - FRIENDS intro (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mno3aqYalfU). but the music is not dark and fucked up like that intro OR EVEN embryonic by the flaming lips! just plain ol super pretty nice chill fla-li we've grown to know and love. more of an IDM spacey feel i guess? with soulection percussion sometimes??? ?? ?? ?! ?!? i like it. there’s a reggie watts appearance which kinda makes the whole damn thing happen. i just wish they'd make a whole album that sounds like “squishy glass” from that fetus EP. all these reviews are too long .
aphex twin "alberto balsam" is such a good track
run the jewels 3: i dunno i have a hard time being objective about this because i love EL-P and especially killer mike so so much. beats that make me want to pedal a bike really hard. EL-P's lines are good and killer mikes are great as always. my favorite thing they've done so far but honestly they have such a fixed sound already idk what that means. i'm idiot
why "this ole king" single: i know. can you believe it. why? has a new album coming out this year. wow. i don't know how i feel about this band anymore, the last couple of albums have done zero for me. but i still listen to their old stuff on the regs because it hits that miserable idiot sweet spot so well. but who cares. this song is better than anything that was on mumps etc. mostly just like straight indie rock but the sound is arresting and resigned. very nice guitar parts and beautiful vocals. has a random bleep boop part because they couldn't figure out how to segue into the second part about 2.5 minutes in. really like this. some guy on youtube had a good point saying this has a real "eskimo snow" feel. i can dig. ends with this super twinkly pretty piano with tinkly pretty vokes. i like that this song doesn't repeat anything because that's how i like to write songs. i'm me?
why - "proactive evolution" single: the beginning sounds like radiohead with yoni wolf singing. iono. looking at the lyrics i feel like he's trying to reach back into the word play he was lauded for and they ain't bad... just not piss stoppingly good. piss! nice little skippy drum thing happens outta nowhere. this has a similar 'resigned' thing going on as the previous single but it sounds more bored than forlorn. more butt lord than forward?????
???
burlap - burnout king: a guy who sounds like a less wheezy version of the US maple guy singing. cool detuned fuzz riff thing happening all the time in my right ear. this guy loves to holler like david yow!!!! WOW. really dig. also they have a song called "heavy breather" & "four seasons" has a riff i wish i had written.
xiu xiu - forget: i don't know what i expect out of xiu xiu at this point. i love knife play so much even to this day after so many years and crap. this is like MGMT. iono i don't hate it, but it's not making me get the vapors. ohh oh oh i got it. THE ALBUM TITLE IS WHAT YOU DO WHEN YOU'RE DONE LISTENING TO THIS.
