I don't know if this is intentional on your part but I notice that you never go in much detail of the Magnus' loft. I was just wondering how you pictuered it looking, like is an open plan or are there more closed off spaces.
I’ve never had a chance to go into detail about this, so thank you for asking!
To some extent, this is completely intentional. When I first started writing ALDNT, I didn’t have a super clear image of Magnus’s loft in my mind. I had a very specific image that was leftover from reading the books, and that image didn’t mesh at all with what we see in the tv show. And since I felt like my book-based idea was outdated, and I wasn’t familiar enough with the details of the show version, I intentionally left things vague. When ALDNT was just a four-part series, the minute details of the loft really weren’t important, considering the subject matter.
Now that things have progressed (to say the least, jfc why do you guys let me write so much??? 😅) I have a very clear idea of what Magnus’s loft looks like. But while it’s definitely based on the location we see in the show, it’s very different, and maintains a lot of the overall look from the idea I had while reading the books. The reason I still haven’t gone into too much detail in ALDNT (I keep the description of the layout consistent with itself, but that’s about it) is just because it doesn’t come up naturally? Alec’s not really gonna sit around and describe the scenery very often, unless he has a specific reason to do so. So things might keep coming up in more detail, but only if there’s a necessary reason for Alec to be thinking about it.
So, for general reference: The aesthetic style of the loft is very similar to the one on the show, but the actual structure is much more open. Apart from the various rooms, the balcony, and the kitchen (which is more sectioned-off than genuinely separated from the rest of the loft; the door is actually just a doorway and one of the walls is only bar-height, not floor-to-ceiling), the loft is an open space. Whenever Alec refers to the ‘living room’, he means the massive, open, generic ‘loft’ space. Magnus messes with the furniture a lot (the whole thing usually gets changed at least twice a month), but there’s usually a basic setup with couches/chairs, a coffee table of some sort, and the mini-bar. The mini-bar and the tv are the only things that are always there, and always in the same spot.
The only rooms are Magnus’s bedroom (which includes a bathroom and a walk-in closet), a guest bedroom, a guest bathroom, the library, and the kitchen. And technically the balcony, if you count that as a room.
Also, I haven’t had a chance to mention this in ALDNT yet, but Magnus also owns the apartment next door, which is a completely open, un-sectioned loft space. He keeps it empty, and uses it for demon summonings and other big jobs that might risk messing up his apartment. He also uses it as a generic ‘work’ location when he doesn’t want to have a client in his actual home.
I hope this answers your question! And like I said, I do have a very specific loft setup for them, so if you have any other questions about it, I’d be more than happy to answer them! 💜😊💜
