Alien Parenting: You're Doing It Right
"Smiley Spock!" The little girl giggled happily as, sure enough, the Vulcan on the screen was smiling bigger than any other appearance he ever made on the show.
Opportunity smiled at this. This scene was little Andromeda's favorite part of one of her favorite episodes. "Look, Sa-Mekh, he all smiley!"
"I know, sweetie," Opportunity replied, "He's happy. The person he loves is safe and not hurt."
"Like Daddy does when Sa-Mekh come home from a twip?" Opportunity looked over to Amity at his side, who nodded and hugged the big MER.
"Yes. Exactly like that, honey." Amity bent down and hugged his daughter, her little arms wrapped around him in return.
Both children were now in their first frame after the Sojourner type infant frame. Andromeda's little brown solar panels flapped gently, like they usually did when she was happy.
"I wuv you, Daddy." she said sweetly, which still made Amity's heart melt.
"I love you, too, Andromeda."
“Gwumpy Bones!” came Antares’ voice, drawing all three’s attention back to him and the screen. The child was scrunching his apertures in his best imitation of the medical officer’s face, which made his sister giggle more.
“Silly ‘Tares,” she said, “You make funny face!” She went back to join her brother, the two making faces at each other, and laughing about them.
It had been a year since the two were born and everyone back at NASA had fallen in love with them immediately, watching them chase each other around the lab or playing in the Mars yard with each other when they got their new frames. Antares, like most little boys on Earth, immediately liked playing with trucks and other big machines. His sister was the same, but with spaceships and aliens. Which was why they were watching Star Trek.
Their parents watched with an arm around each other as the little twins giggled and played. They had tiny MER frames, but one could easily see Amity in them, too. Andromeda still had his eyes, and her brother was a bit smaller than the average Rovarian his age (but still perfectly healthy, as the doctor had assured them when he received his new frame), echoing his Terran father's size. The two parents still sometimes found themselves awestruck at what their love had created, Spirit remarking once that they had too much love to create one new life, and that's why they'd had twins. Many agreed with this, as the power of love and family was a large part of the Rovarian beliefs and values. After all, the force of their love had pulled them together from two different planets.
"And to think," Opportunity said to the rover beside him, "you were so nervous, you could barely talk when we first met. Bet you're glad you talked to me now."
"I'm more than glad." Amity replied, "I've never been so happy before. You're the best thing that's ever happened to me, Oppy, and I'm so lucky you're mine." He moved closer, hugging Opportunity close with both arms, even as he felt the strong arms of the Rovarian wrap around him and hold him, almost lifting him off the ground. With a contented sigh, he nuzzled into the crook of Opportunity's neck, the MER's head resting atop his own. Amity whispered, so softly that none but his Oppy could hear, a special word he'd recently learned
"I love you....my t'hy'la."

1. What inspired you to make/pick up this character?
((I’ve wanted to make rover OCs for a little over a year now, since I got really into the Mars rovers. I had some names set aside, but didn’t think too much about actually making an OC til I started conversing with the mun of the Rovarians blog.))
2. What is your favorite ship (be it romantic or otherwise) with your character?
((Amity and Opportunity! It’s really the only ship I’ve got so far, but even if I had multiple, this would be my fav.))
8. What is your favorite random headcanon?
((My favorite headcanon is that Amity is a huge sappy romantic. Either that or the fact that he loves flowers.))
19. Do you have any suggestions for mun?
“Hm. It might be nice if mun would watch some of the movies and shows I like. Mun got me into The Golden Girls, but I enjoy movies more than they do.”

Don't you have a camera, Spirit? You could take your own selfies too. -Amity
Spirit huffed,
"I tried, and they came out terrible. I look like I should have a giant 'WIDE LOAD' sign on me-" She looked around, both sets of eyes scanning for whoever had spoken.
"Who said that anyway?"

Good Morning, Beautiful (Humanized Rovarians)
This fic inspired by this drawing from @darklinespectra
Tumblr media
Amity woke to the sun warming his face. He groaned tiredly, tempted to shut off his comm before Dr. Johnson started calling to wake him up and tell him to get to work. He just wanted five more minutes!
But his alarm started going off, dragging him out of sleep and into wakefulness. His hand smacked the alarm hard, shutting it off. He groaned again and shifted in his sleeping bag...or rather, his blankets. Yes, that’s right, he didn’t sleep in a tent with a sleeping bag anymore. Not since he’d found the aliens and gone to live among them. Not since they’d accepted him as one of their own. Not since he’d first laid eyes on.....him.
Amity sat up in bed and looked over at the large bed’s other occupant. The rays of sun that had awakened him now seemed to beg him for forgiveness as they played perfectly across thick, strong arms and a powerful chest (the view of which was not obscured by a shirt at the moment, much to Amity’s delight) before they came to rest on the face of his love. Opportunity had one of those inhumanly handsome faces that left his age a mystery, although Amity found all of him inhumanly beautiful. The neat, but not completely flawless dark brown hair that was now messed up from sleep. The intense, deep brown eyes that Amity knew were concealed by their lids. That voice that always warmed him inside. Yes, he was perfectly beautiful, even with the scars still present on his back and torso.
Amity remembered when he’d first seen those scars, and how moved he’d been to hear how Opportunity got them by nearly dying himself to save his sister Spirit from enemy fire in the midst of a bloody war. It was the moment Amity had started to fall in love with him, a feeling he’d been afraid to admit until Spirit urged the two of them together and he realized the feeling was mutual. It was the first time he’d really been held tight in those strong arms.
Looking back now, there were times Amity still couldn’t believe the big warrior and co-leader of the Rovarians had fallen for him, a rather average, if on the small side, Terran man who could barely talk to him when they met. But there he was, laying beside Amity, a golden band on each of their left hands. He smiled and gently brushed some of Opportunity’s hair aside before placing a soft, tender kiss on his forehead. But just as he started to sit up, he felt an arm around him.
“Going somewhere?” Brown eyes met Amity’s as a smile greeted him and Amity felt a kiss on his own forehead.
“Nope, I was just moving so I could be closer to you.” Amity wrapped his arms around Opportunity.
“Aaww, I love you, too, Amity.” There it was, that warm, strong embrace he loved so much. Amity nuzzled into the warmth of his love’s chest, feeling the powerful heartbeat beneath the thick muscle there.
They stayed like that a moment longer before they got dressed. Amity in the simple Rovarian tunic and loose fitting pants he’d replicated, along with a pair of socks and shoes. Opportunity had his standard uniform of sleeveless red tunic, gray pants, and black boots. His red-bronze armor fit over it easily, and hugged his form in a way that only emphasized it. His rank bands encircled his upper arms as his gauntlets clicked shut around his lower arms. Even now, over a year since they first got together, Amity found it hard not to stare....and not to feel self conscious or inadequate. Opportunity recognized the look and hugged him close again.
“I love you, so much.” the Rovarian said, running his hand through Amity’s hair “and nothing will ever, ever change that.”
“I don’t deserve you,” Amity replied, “You could do much better.”
“Oh, Amity.” Opportunity lifted the smaller man in his arms and just held him close, “Maybe I could, but I don’t want better. I want you. My Amity. Forever.” He smiled and gave Amity another kiss before setting him down. “Now, let’s go and have some breakfast, I’m starved"
Spirit was already up and in the kitchen when the two emerged from their room, and once again, Amity felt out of place.
Like her twin, Spirit was tall and powerfully built. She wasn't what men on Earth would call "sexy", rather, she was the kind of woman who made such men pee themselves in fear. Honestly, she looked like an Amazon from a Wonder Woman comic. She actually had come dressed as the superhero for NASA's most recent Halloween party, and the look suited her perfectly (Amity and Opportunity had been Mr. Spock and Captain Kirk, respectively). Her armor only made her look more like an Amazon. Amity knew she could fight as well as one, too. He'd seen her in action when he'd accompanied her to rescue Opportunity after he'd been kidnapped and tortured.
On the other hand, Amity knew her to be lighthearted and fun on normal days. Her smile and laugh were often contagious, her bright brown eyes and her dark hair up in messy buns with strands hanging out in various places further enhanced her lively look, as did her springy, floaty gait.
"Bout time you two got up. I was thinking you fell into a couples coma in there." She stifled a giggle when she saw Amity’s cheeks go red. "Relax, Am, I'm messing with ya. I know you two love your mornings together."

Characters I will play from this blog (my OCs, please credit me if you use them for anything. Thank you.):
*Spirit, Opportunity, and probably Kiali are the ones I play the most right now, so they have the most detailed bios. However, I'll play any of these characters in an RP (that would actually help flesh them out more) and I'll add to their bios as they get more developed. I'd appreciate the help with this.
Leaders and Their Family:
Spirit:
Rank: Leader (she and her brother affectionately call each other co-leaders in non-serious situations). Indicated by three connected gold bands on her upper arm with the Rovarian seal stamped into them Gender: Female Sexuality: Asexual (meaning no sexual attraction, though she will still find someone handsome/beautiful. But she never has sexual thoughts or desires. This is typical for the entire species.) Family: Identical twin brother Opportunity, and in one AU I've done, she has a niece and nephew named Andromeda and Antares respectively Personality/Background: One of the two original NASA Mars Exploration Rovers, she's energetic and outgoing and generally easygoing. However, when her family, her people, or anyone else she cares about are threatened, she's a dangerous and deadly enemy. No specific love interest here (though she had one at one time, he sadly died), just her family and her people. As a leader, she tries to be open minded, just, and generous. Despite being a co-leader of her people, she doesn't view herself as being above them or entitled to special treatment. Better in some skills, maybe, but she is just as vulnerable to the rule of law as anyone else, and she knows it. She's a steadfast and dependable friend and ally and is glad to help any way she can. She's also pretty good with kids, too (she has a little niece and nephew, except in AUs) and often engages in friendly prank wars/sibling rivalries with her twin. After almost losing him in a war, she makes sure every time they part that the last thing she says to Opportunity is that she loves him. She can also have a (figurative) mouth like a sailor when she wants to. Inventory: Except for special occasions, she always wears her Rovarian battle armor and carries a standard warrior's armament of a staff weapon, a handheld disruptor, and a non-lethal stunner weapon. But since the death of her love, she carries and wields his sword in his honor, as this was part of his last wish to her. She also wears a necklace that belonged to him, except for the chain, which she repaired for him once. Because of this and the fact she always enjoyed sword sparring with him, she also now carries her own sword and is known for being the only Rovarian to use two swords in battle.
Opportunity:
Rank: Leader, same as Spirit. Indicated by three connected gold bands on his upper arm with the Rovarian seal stamped into them Gender: Male Sexuality: Gay, as he likes males, but he shares the same asexuality as the rest of his species. Family: Identical twin sister Spirit, In one AU he's married to Amity (OC owned by @darklinespectra ) with whom he is a father of twins Andromeda and Antares. Voice Claim (what I think his voice might sound like): Jonathan Del Arco as Hugh. Personality/Background: The other original NASA rover. Like his sister, he's generally pretty easygoing, though not quite as energetic as Spirit. Also like Spirit, he's a fierce protector of those he loves and cares about, especially his family. He's a wise leader and does his best to make decisions that meet everyone's needs. He's just as humble as his sister, even refusing to admit he's the best pilot on Mars (even though literally everyone else will agree it's true. Spirit often ribs him about this.) He's a very skilled warrior and is not afraid to make even the ultimate sacrifice (he almost did once when protecting Spirit) Inventory: Like his sister, he's pretty much always in battle armor. He also carries the standard armament, plus one extra disruptor and is known for his marksmanship.
Family from the AU with @darklinespectra :
Amity: OC of @darklinespectra , husband of Opportunity, father of Andromeda and Antares. Andromeda: Female, young child, identical twin sister of Antares. Answers to the nickname "Rommie"
Antares: Male, young child, identical twin brother of Andromeda
RSS Artax Senior Crew:
Captain: Kiali
Rank: Captain. Indicated by three separate gold bands on her upper arms with the seal stamped on them
Gender: Female
Voice Claim (what I think her voice might sound like): Kate Muldrow as Captain Janeway Personality/Background: Kiali is level headed and intelligent, a brilliant strategist, and she has utmost confidence in her crew. She doesn't sugarcoat things, but she's not a block of stone either. She's understanding of problems her cremated might have and is willing to work with them to solve it. She tries to be encouraging to ensign an trainees, knowing they could use the confidence. She's very good at noticing when some is particularly gifted at something and encourages them to expand on that gift. Inventory: Rovarian armor, stunner, disruptor
First Officer: Taurus
Rank: Commander. Indicated by two connected gold bands on his upper arms with the seal on them
Gender: Male
Note: Taurus is an amputee, missing one hand and lower arm. He lost it to a chemical infection (alien biology is weird, yo).
Voice Claim (what I think his voice might sound like): Bruce Boxleitner as Tron. Personality/Background: He's gruff but not a jerk, though he is more serious than his captain. He's generally a nice guy, but not very outgoing, except in his post on the ship
Chief Engineer: Castor
Rank: Lieutenant Commander. Indicated by two separate gold bands on his upper arms with the seal on them
Gender: Male
Chief Medical Officer: Deneb
Rank: (there aren't specific rank names for medical staff, but she's the equivalent of a Lieutenant Commander. Indicated by two separate silver bands on her upper arms with a Medical seal on them.
Gender: Female
Chief Science Officer: Pollux
Rank: Lieutenant. Indicated by one gold band on his upper arms with the Rovarian seal on it
Gender: Male
Personality: He's a nerd. Naturally curious (even by Rovarian standards) and always eager for scientific exploration. In school, he was a definite brainiac. The kid who knew everything. He has a tendency to sometimes infodump or just not stop talking, especially when he gets excited. He's pretty creative and resourceful, too. He's determined to find solutions to problems, even if it's a quick fix jerryrigged solution.
Trauma: He was part of a team sent to survey the aftermath of the attacks by human terrorists on the Rovarian city of Jezero. There were no survivors, and he saw the carnage and the bodies, including children and babies, up close. He is still haunted by those sights, and in addition to nightmares, he also has flashbacks that can be triggered by seeing a baby, even if it's another species. He starts seeing his memories of the carnage again and feels trapped by them. He usually will need to leave and get some air in order to recompose himself if this happens. It's not easy for him, but he is willing to explain all of this if he needs to or if your muse asks him.
Head of Security and Chief Tactical Officer: Libra
Rank: Lieutenant Commander. Indicated by two separate gold bands on her upper arms with the seal on them
Gender: Female
Communications Officer: Gemini
Rank: Lieutenant. Indicated by one gold band on her upper arms with the Rovarian seal on it
Gender: Female Personality/Background: Along with being the comm officer, she's also the tech expert (she was a technology scientist/engineer before she joined the crew of Artax). So it should be no surprise that she's also a skilled hacker. Voice Claim (what I think her voice might sound like): Laura Bertram as Trance (Andromeda TV show)
Helmsman: Sagittarius
Rank: Lieutenant. Indicated by one gold band on his upper arms with the Rovarian seal on it
Gender: Male
Note: Much to his annoyance, his name often gets shortened to "Sag/Saj" or "Sagi/Saji" and he will often say something unless a superior officer calls him that. He knows they only do it when in a situation where they need to use shorthand versions of things.
Navigator: Cygnus
Rank: Ensign. Indicated by a single bronze band around his upper arms.
Gender: Male
Other People I might play from here:
Carina: Female, ambassador, mother of Aries
Aries: Male, young child (about two or three, but he can be aged up for whatever us muns decide), highly intelligent, father died in the war with human terrorists
Centaurus and Crux: Twin brothers, warriors, usually (but not always) stationed on the Artax

Lost Love and Heavy Hearts
For once, Opportunity was glad he didn’t need to breathe, because he didn’t think he’d have been able to. While it didn’t physically happen, he felt like he had the proverbial lump in his throat, as well as the aching chest feeling that came with a broken heart. It was all he could do to keep himself from breaking down and sobbing as he proceeded to the citadel, Spirit at his side. Both wore black bands on their arms in addition to their gold ones.
In his hands, Opportunity carried a wreath of metal and glass roses that matched the single one he had stuck in the collar of his armor. The single rose stood for the beginning, and the wreath stood for what they guessed was most certainly an end. The wreath took the place of the body they didn’t have, because no one knew where it was. Inside the wreath was a photo of the person it honored, on his wedding day with his flower crown on. Beneath it were the words “My love for you will live on forever. Even when everything else has ceased to exist, my love for you will always remain, my dear Amity.” on a metal plate attached to the picture. A golden band still shone on Opportunity’s left ring finger, a stark contrast to the black cape attached to his shoulders.
Beside him, Spirit wore a black tunic and cape. Her eyes were either downcast or on her twin. She'd watched him spend hours lovingly crafting the wreath, and she'd held him when he'd fall apart sobbing in the middle of working on it, offering whatever comfort and all the love she could. And she was ready to do that again if it happened here.
They didn't know what had happened. Amity had left their home to go somewhere and had never come back. Neither the Rovarians or NASA could reach him. Both had launched searches of all kinds, and neither had found any trace of the little rover. Reluctantly, Opportunity had called off Rovarian searches, saying that Amity wouldn't want them to use up their resources for him, though Spirit knew Opportunity would've found a way to harness a black hole if he thought it would help find Amity.
She couldn't imagine the pain her poor twin was feeling. He'd been distraught ever since Amity went missing, and he cried himself to sleep at night. She just let him, because in truth, Spirit didn't know what she should do, and she feared doing something wrong and possibly hurting her brother more. No one had ever seen him like this before, not even her, and she worried about him.
As they stopped in front of the citadel and Opportunity set the wreath up on a stand, Spirit wrapped an arm around him and gave his shoulders a gentle squeeze when she heard soft sniffing sounds from him. His hand went to the single rose he wore. It was the one Amity had made him as a Valentine’s gift, the day they professed their love for each other. The smaller rover had been so nervous then, and afraid to tell him his feelings, until Opportunity had coaxed it out of him. Since then, Amity had become more confident and open, especially when “Oppy” was with him.
If only Amity could see him now.
He wasn’t standing up tall and strong anymore. The sun didn’t set him on fire anymore. His eyes didn’t shine anymore like Amity had made them do. Spirit found herself softly weeping, for Amity, her brother-in-law, yes, but also for her twin, who seemed to have died inside.
She heard Opportunity try to give the loving eulogy he’d written, but when he broke down in the middle of it, she rushed out to take him in her arms, holding him close and gently guiding him back to his place by the wreath before she continued it herself. She didn’t remember a word of it or hear any of it. She was focused on Opportunity. The moment she finished, Spirit was back at his side, hugging him close, whispering soft, soothing words of comfort to him. She didn’t even hear the words their friends from NASA had to say as she held her brother close.
She just hoped that somehow, someday, Opportunity would be okay again.
--------------------------
@darklinespectra tell me what you think. (I had it be Amity instead of Oppy because I’m not comfortable writing someone else’s OC)
