"AMMA! I STARTED THE FIRE" (The story behind the album cover) . . . "Amma! I started the fire" was the first and the only EP from the Sri Lankan all-female punk band Dead Laxmiis. The album art is based on a photograph taken by one of the band members Yadvi when she visited the Nallur festival in Jaffna, somewhere in the early 2000s. The legend says it's Yadvi's mother's older sister dancing in the photograph, who took care of Yadvi after the passing of Yadvi's mother. Yadvi was 4 years old when her mother passed away. The EP's title "Amma" is referred to Yadvi's aunt instead of her biological mother because the aunt was the mother figure when Yadvi was growing up. Yadvi's "Amma" whose name is unknown was the one who introduced traditional oriental music and culture to Yadvi, especially Villu Paatu, is an ancient form of musical story telling method performed in Southern India, where the narration is interspersed with music, an art of the southern states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala, as well as North-East Sri Lanka. You can hear this influence throughout this EP, which interpolates elements of crust punk and horror punk. The band's most notorious member, PCP (Pig Crusher Pink), created the Dead Laxmiis logo with the face of the goddess Laxmi with two crosses on her eyes signifying the cynism of the band towards the nativity of the common belief of capitalism. #deadlaxmiis #ammaistartedthefire #punk #srilanka #lka #colombo #jaffna #contemporary #contemporaryart #saskiafernandogallery #muvindubinoy https://www.instagram.com/p/CnL-d6kIFTb/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
