The Promises I Made (2019 Edition)

For the past thirteen years, I’ve spent every New Year’s Eve compiling a list of fifty promises I intend to keep or fulfill over the next twelve months. The results have been truly amazing, and I have kept some promises I never thought I could. 2019 was… a nightmare that I can barely believe I survived, but I still kept some promises that I honestly did not expect I ever could.

This year, for New Year’s, there will be a new set of promises for to me keep, but here are the old ones, for review!

The Promises I Made (2019 Edition)

1) Be more proactive about tracking and following up with struggling students to decrease the number of students who drop from my class when they realize they cannot pass. Status: Somewhat broken? I tried really hard to be proactive with my students; however, there were some massive issues outside the classroom this year that made it extremely difficult to keep the focus on the students. When administration drags your attention away from the class, there is not a lot you can do…

2) Find a place to put in volunteer hours because uhhhh like this is actually important to my work evaluation and I definitely need something to write in that section… Yikes, this spring is my last chance to do this!! @_@ Status: Kept. I volunteered with the Utah Shakespeare Festival and it was super fun!

3) Install the fire escape window in the Utah house, no matter how much it might cost, because I can’t get a totally unrelated tenant in that basement without said window… Status: Somewhat kept. Okay. This one is a LONG story, but to be fair to me, I worked my ASS off to try and make this happen; just every single thing in the world prevented me from completing this promise, up to and including the city telling me I needed a permit AFTER I had already dug a massive hole in the ground for the window…

4) Buy sod to add grass to the front portion of the lawn so that it no longer looks like garbage. Status: Broken, but I did buy grass seed and put that out there. Unfortunately only some of it sprouted, but there is indeed SOME grass now growing there…

5) Fix the bricks near the windowsills on the Utah house to prevent long-term damage. Status: Broken. After dealing with the stupid window disaster, I had no time for this at all.

6) Get a watering system for my roses at the Utah house because I think my bro is probably killing them and that’s just not cool. Status: Broken, see above.

7) Work on the patio at the Utah house before it just flat out falls down. Status: Somewhat broken. Again, I tried to make progress on this—I called a patio guy to come out and assess how much it would cost to fix the patio—but the price I was quoted was so high that there was nothing I could do at the time.

8) Paint the stairwell so that there’s no chance of anything like lead paint or asbestos being exposed. Status: Broken. The leftover wallpaper glue continues to confound me…

9) Trim the backyard bushes so the neighbors don’t hate us anymore… Status: Broken. We trimmed a few bushes and at least got to the trees out front, but definitely a majority were left uncared for.

10) Move into a new house in Texas where I can get real internet, please for the love of god… Status: Kept. I moved into a very nice house with no scorpions!

11) Save money for my upcoming trip to Japan! 2020 baby! Status: Uhhh, broken. I’m not sure how I thought I’d be able to move into a new house AND save money for an international trip at the same time…

12) Get my wisdom tooth removed because it’s still there and still killing me, yikessss. Status: Broken. AUGH. I’m an idiot.

13) Make an appointment with an eye doctor for like the first time in years. Good job, Yehn, good job. Status: Kept. I got my glasses fixed and even got a new pair of glasses too!

14) Get my prescriptions refilled because I’m dwindling on asthma medicine and like… I could die from this… I should never have been left to care for myself; I’m not mature enough for this responsibility… Status: Kept, surprisingly. But I still need a new doctor because the last one I was going to wouldn’t give me any refills…

15) FINISH THE GIVEAWAY PRIZES I PROMISED LAST YEAR because holy shit I am incompetent and the worst and everyone has permission to hate me for starting things and never finishing them, fuck. Status: Broken. So broken. I am the worst.

16) Go dolphin watching in the Gulf for real this time. Seriously, it’s $10 Yehn, you can do this. Status: Kept, amazingly. It wasn’t as impressed as hoped; however, there was a lovely sunset.

17) Return to the Channel Islands to take better pictures. D; Status: Broken. T_T

18) Level all my classes to 70 in FFXIV before next expansion, please. Status: Somewhat broken. I didn’t have everything to 70 before the expansion, but I kind of feel like I should get credit for this one, because HEY, look at me now:

19) Organize and properly label all the photos on my computer so that I’m no longer desperately combing through folder and folder in blank confusion, looking for a single picture in a sea of thousands… Status: Kept. It took me like eight hours of work, but I actually did this.

20) Update Home and a Half more than once? PLEASE??? The guilt I feel over this currently is crushing. Status: Broken. And the guilt grows…

21) Complete the online American Literature class I am designing on time and with no corrections needed. Status: Kept. I’m counting this as kept even though TECHNICALLY there was one thing I forgot to finish and it came back and bit me in the ass; however, I was approved with no corrections needed.

22) Earn 100% completion for Kingdom Hearts III. So excited! Status: Broken. Um… This just didn’t happen.

23) Update my calendar with important dates—holidays, birthdays, etc.—and be productive about sending cards and well-wishes. Status: Somewhat kept. I wasn’t any better about sending cards really, but I did at least save all the birthdays in my phone so I remember them.

24) Get the garbage disposal in the Texas house fixed ASAP so I don’t have to wash the dishes by hand anymore because I absolutely hate that particular chore. Status: Kept. Then I moved, so it didn’t even matter.

25) Finish all the books my coworkers and friends bought for me recently so I can thank them for their recommendations! Status: Broken. So broken.

26) Actually move into my new place instead of leaving it completely undecorated and lifeless. Status: Remarkably, kept. Nothing has plastic on it, unlike at my old house where the nightstand didn’t get unwrapped even after two years of living there lol.

27) Try hard to get Creative Writing into a different area of the general ed. core so that more people will enroll in it. Status: Kept. I’m counting this because I did my darn best, but we are still waiting on the state to tell us whether or not the class will be accepted.

28) Get caught up on my Ebird reports, even the old, old, old ones I never put in because I was slacking. Status: Kept, actually. Whoo.

29) Throw away/return/sort all the stacks of old mail in the house (OMGGGG they’ve made me look like paper hoarder and I’m nootttt). Status: Broken. There’s just… a lot of papers to go through…

30) Clean up the garage before moving so that I don’t have to fight spiders to move when the time comes. Status: Broken, in that I did not clean up the garage in advance and did, in fact, have to fight spiders when it came time to move.

31) Find a way to boost grading productivity so that each class takes only two days to grade, maximum. Status: Somewhat kept. I was definitely better this year than last year; however, I really think the “two days per class” thing was too optimistic, so for the future semester, I allotted myself three days per class and I think it will work better.

32) Go to a totally new restaurant and try their food. Status: Kept. We went to a Mexican restaurant and I had trompo tacos (al pastor) which is probably not anything special to anyone else but it was my first time so lol.

33) Cancel old credit cards to make sure my credit is good before trying to buy a house (although I just checked my credit score and I’m in the great range already, so this is mostly for posterity’s sake). Status: Broken. But it didn’t affect my loan, so I guess it was okay. And it ended up being good I didn’t cancel my Best Buy card because I was able to get good financing on the new appliances I needed for my house.

34) Get official contracts from my tenants so I can use my rental income in my next loan calculation. Status: Broken, but I ended up not using that as part of the loan calculation anyway >_> so…

35) Talk to an HR rep about my retirement savings so that I can consolidate all my retirement accounts into one. (Man, look at all these ADULTING promises.) Status: Broken. Look at me failing all these adulting promises.

36) Really finish decorating my office so it looks super cute and all my students want to visit me. Status: Broken, but I think it sucks that I have to write this because it was really not my fault I couldn’t finish decorating my office. Our offices were all moved and disrupted by building remodels so I spent the entire year basically working out of a couple cardboard boxes.

37) Not sign up for ANY more new responsibilities at work in the spring semester. This is the biggest challenge. D; Status: Kept, by technicality. I was able to avoid signing up for anything new in SPRING… But fall… was a whole other story. XD

38) Migrate all the rest of my books to the new Texas house instead of leaving them in Utah… SOMEHOW. Status: Kept. I’m going to count this as kept. The only books left at the Utah house are my manga—I managed to bring literally every other book, which is very impressive considering I had only my small Camaro with its tiny truck space.

39) Use my twitter account more often to make it worth following. I will try!! Status: Kept… sorta? I mean, since I didn’t use the account AT ALL before, making even one Twitter post kind of counts as using it more, right? >_>

40) Keep my hair cut nicely so I look less like a mess (than I really am). Status: Somewhat broken. Although I think I got my hair cut more often this year than before, I don’t think I looked any less like a mess. XD

41) Successfully find a bridesmaid dress for my friend’s wedding that matches the rest of the wedding party. Status: Actually kept! It was incredible. The wedding I was in was even featured in a magazine because of how pretty it was!

42) Make sure my skin is in good condition for the wedding so I don’t look like a disturbing ghost… Status: Kept? I mean, in the end, looking like a ghost ended up being the whole point since it was a Halloween themed wedding so I kind of won either way.

43) Complete my BNHA manga collection. Since my bro bought me a bunch of the volumes for Christmas, I might as well. Status: Broken… I bought like… one volume. XD

44) See a groove-billed ani. (It’s another type of bird.) Status: Broken. Very illusive bird. T_T

45) Respond to messages, asks, and comments more quickly. I promise I’m not ignoring people… D; Status: Um, broken. I left many people on read this year, sorry.

46) Lose ten pounds so that I feel more fit and comfy. Status: Broken. I didn’t exercise at all this year, uff.

47) Pay down credit card debt by at least 1/3. Yikesssss, I really need to do this quick. Status: Broken. It’s hard to pay down a credit card when you pour all your money into buying a new house…

48) I will finally fucking finish that chapter 73 analysis of Noragami… I swear to god… Status: Broken. Uh yeah. This didn’t happen. V_V

49) Reach 1700 followers on Tumblr. You should follow me—I’m only marginally a waste of time and space! Status: Kept. Over 2500 followers now!

50) I will keep these promises. LOLLLLL. Status: Somewhat kept/somewhat broken. One year I really will keep them all…

Well, there are more kept promises than last year at least… It was another really hard year, what with moving in the middle of the year, over-working, dealing with so much drama with the reaccreditation on our campus, and just EVERYTHING all at once this last year… I keep thinking things are going to calm down and then they never do. Please 2020… just let me rest…

And that kind of thing but he has no control over it and then the Congress has no control over that’s what Congress agreed to give away its power over the monetary system in this is a stupid thing called the Federal Reserve Act I know they said he has appointed to his cabinet some people who were the Federal Reserve and he has a pointed to his people who are kind of woman he said when we got to put an end to all these Foreign Wars but then increases the military budget and does just the opposite I’m back to this thing that actions speak louder than words and that’s my present level of skepticism at the moment let us see what happens I think you’re hot and again 22 trillion dollars just hit today in the comments. Budget 2019: Your Budget FAQs Answered By Panel of Experts

Pakatan Harapan’s first national budget will be tabled on the November 2 2018, and we Malaysians cannot wait to hear what the new government has planned for us. Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng has already made sure that we don’t get our hopes up. Malaysians have been told that this will be a ‘sacrificial’ budget that will require us to tighten our belts. We’ve also been told that the country is engulfed in RM1 trillion debt. We invited a panel of experts to share their predictions and insights for the impending Budget 2019. The panel was made up of: 1) Tan Sri Ramon Navaratnam, Asian Strategy & Leadership Institute (ASLI) Centre of Public Policy Studies Chairperson & Former Deputy Secretary-General, Ministry of Finance 2) Steve Chia Tax Partner, PwC Malaysia, and a member of the Public Finance Reform Lab under the Strategic Reform Initiatives championed by PEMANDU 3) Shahril Hamdan Deputy UMNO Youth Chief 4) Ali Salman CEO of The Institute for Democracy and Economic Affairs (IDEAS)

Government is giving mixed signals

All indications show that this will be an austere budget, based on what the Prime Minister and the Finance Minister have said. The new government has given us the impression that they feel the need to reduce expenditure; even the numbers planned for public investment is set to be reduced. Shahril Hamdan, deputy UMNO Youth Chief, finds this to be quite troubling. “According to my belief and the ideology that I subscribe to, I think this is the moment to increase public expenditure,” commented Shahril. “This idea that you can reduce government expenditure hoping that private investments will go up - how are you expecting private investments to go up if you cancel contracts when they need it? How do you expect private consumption to also go up if you give mixed signals as to what you believe on cash transfer programs, like BR1M, assistance to farmers? The government has indicated its ambivalent stance to these policies. But finally, we are able to see what the economic ideology of Pakatan Harapan is. And it seems to be a neo-liberal, belt-tightening, reduce deficit kind of administration, as opposed to a balanced one - but we’ll see, come 2nd November,” he noted.

Don’t neglect the well-being of the rakyat

According to Steve Chia of PwC Malaysia, a household income goes to three things: housing, food and beverage, and transportation. Hence, some form of targeted financial assistance in these areas will help. There are also spoke about a monthly, discounted, transport card for the B40, as something the government should look into. Tan Sri Ramon added that Malaysia’s economic policies must be reviewed and extended to cover all income groups and based on needs. “Implement the policies and review it. Let the people be aware. And if the government doesn’t deliver, whichever government, we must call them out. The poor must be looked after. The B40 must also be cared for. Otherwise, we will keep having problems of brain drain, migration, capital outflow,” he iterated.

BR1M: To scrape or not to scrape?

Shahril says that abolishing BR1M is an overreaction. Tan Sri Ramon echoes his sentiments by saying it that government could have considered other alternatives. “I think we have to be very careful about scraping something if we don’t have an alternative. Scraping BR1M may not mean anything to us in the upper class, upper middle class, lower middle class. But for the poor, BR1M can be very important. There may have been some abuses, you hear about people getting BR1M and then they go out to celebrate. But if there are some schemes in place, where the handout is given in the form of vouchers for education, for clothes, or other essentials, that will help a great deal.” said the Former Deputy Secretary-General of the Ministry of Finance.

Is SST really better than GST? Not really.

According to iMoney’s Budget 2019 survey, 47% of Malaysians do not care about the GST or SST; on the other hand 35% are pro-SST. It’s common knowledge that GST is more progressive tax system, and Malaysia took a risky step by reverting from GST to SST. So what are some steps that can be taken to enhance the SST to make sure the government does not lose its revenue? “SST is a narrow tax system, as opposed to GST which is multi-staged and covers almost everything. If you look at the exemption for consumer goods, more than 5,000 goods are exempted under SST. So, theoretically, you should see price reductions,” said Steve Chia. “The real problem lies in the implementation of it. Are the savings actually flowing down to the rakyat? This is where anti-profiteering legislations should come in. MDTCA (Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs) recently did a study comparing prices of good from May and September 2018, trying to cuff out the tax holiday period. Apparently, 70% of prices of goods dropped after GST is abolished,” he noted. Shahril pointed out that there are two things missing from the GST/SST discussion; a) there’s a recent narrative that prices are not about taxation alone and b) the RM20 bil government revenue shortfall. Reverting to SST might actually incur losses for the government, so why this move? Perhaps the PH government would justify it by saying it was a manifesto promise, but there are a slew of other promises that they could have looked at. GST is a far more efficient tax system. Why ask people to ‘belt-tighten’ when they intentionally implemented a policy that reduces government revenue? Tan Sri Ramon agrees, saying that the GST need not be scraped, it could have been revised. The government could have easily scraped a whole lot of items from the GST list (essential items) to lessen the burden of the people. But scraping GST was a popular thing to say at the time, because no one likes paying taxes.

This sounds like a massive disappointment, given that education takes up a huge chunk of the budget every year. “I wouldn’t say we’re not spending enough on education, the question is whether we’re spending the money in all the right areas,” Shahril said. “I think we have to start at the basic level. That means basic infrastructure concerns that still exists in many schools in rural areas. Do the basic level in ensuring there are enough supply of teachers. Aside from the basic stuff, you must also place certain bets on how do you ensure that a couple of clustered schools really become champion schools. This also relates to universities. In the last budget, there was a discussion to push UM to become one of the Top 100 universities in the world. But there’s always the socialist voice that will say it’s unfair to put maximum resources in one university, because everyone has got to rise together.” Shahril thinks it’s okay to allocate a certain amount of expenditure for building champions - like champion universities, champion school models that can set an example for future education policies. That’s better than being stuck in a conundrum where we’re always fragmented and always have uneven development. “When we try to make everyone happy, it’s sub-optimal. Everyone will be unhappy. Do the basic stuff, but also bet and invest in certain areas. This is not the 80s or 90s anymore where you can just do maximum input and get maximum output, we need to be bold and take risks with policies,” he added. Chia mentioned an interesting point that one of the areas that can use a bold step is TVET (Technical Vocational Education and Training), but there has been no concerted effort from the government to move it forward. But that’s also a mentality problem, because most Malaysian parents want their children to have a degree and to land a white collar job. There’s a lot of potential in TVET that we fail to see. “If you look at countries like Germany and Japan, they grew with the backbone of a TVET style education. I think that is something the government can address and as the link has been missing for a while,” Chia said.

What do the rakyat really want from Budget 2019?

Tan Sri Ramon notes that what the people want is very simple; they want less inflation and they want their basic needs covered. However, he knows that the government cannot get everything done in one budget. Which is why the long term five-year plan must have a structure that encourages competition. He thinks that a lot of the inflation comes from too much protection, crowding out the private sector with the GLCs. If the role of GLCs is to balance employment, there are other ways to do that too. He hopes the new government does not constrict the economy and get the private sector to play its role. Tan Sri Ramon added that the budget is an instrument that brings joy, happiness, and relief to the people. It must also have a sense of fairplay and equity. If one group of people start feeling like they’re not benefiting as much as others, then they will react against it. As a result, budgets and five-year plans will be unpopular. Shahril weighed in and said he hopes this budget will be a game changer. He’s hoping to see some bold moves by the PH government. He also said that we need to future-proof the economy which the previous government started. There will be a lot of pushback as Malaysia has only done things one way the last 30 years, but PH has to strike while the iron is hot. Shahril added that Pakatan now has immense political capital (trust, goodwill, and influence a politician has). It should seize the moment and make real changes instead of continuing with a populist centrist hodge-podge stance on managing the country and economy.

False County Court Claim Against Me on My Car Insurance?

Someone has put a claim in against me for damages, for an accident I know nothing about. It is from early 2010 and has been going on since then. I have been contesting it on the grounds I have not been involved in an incident, however the third party solicitors have issued County Court proceedings against me. So I took my Daughter to the doctor today she is on ARkids. everything went fine at the Doctors but when i went to get her RX they said i would have to pay 81 dollars because of my primary insurance. I dont have Primary insurance she has only had ARkids. well they told me it was through her (sperm donor) father. that had not had anything to do with her for 2 years. she is 5 and when he did it was off and on. well how is this right I have custody of her. I can not afford her meds with his insurance making me pay. when it was just her insurance i didnt have to pay since it is his doesn't he have to pay? After a week or so i thought to myself that if i get in a accident god forbid and it was my fault i have to may myself for damages and you know for such a car would be very expensive so i asked my broker if i can changed it to full coverage and so they did. on the day i did the change the girl that worked for my broker and assisting me asked me Klodian you are aware your license is suspended. I said yes and i explained the reason y. So she found this insurance company for a low price and she emailed me the contract to sign and fax it to her. now under the questions which i saw of course latter after i was denied claim i saw they were marked all NO and that was done on computer not hand writing. which of course in this case was done by the girl that helped me. Now my broker told me that insurance company should had run your driving record before they issue insurance to you and if they done that they were gone see your driver lisence was suspended. But when my broker asked them why they didnt run it Their answer was that they trusted me based on the contract i signed which to my opinion is BS. Now i want to sue them and all the lawyers they refuse to get my case and my believe is because my car is worth about $4800.00 and they don't see how they can make money out of me and i don't have to pay them up front. Now if i go on small claim max i can go is $3000.00 ????

Living in Japan for a year, I saw reasons for its 'demographic time bomb' everywhere — and now I'm seeing the same troubling signs at home

Economists agree Japan is a "demographic time bomb." The population is getting older, but fewer children are being born.

Living in Japan for a year, the author saw why: The culture seems to emphasize hard work, and de-emphasize sex and relationships.

Now, back home in Germany years later, she's starting to see patterns among Europeans that she saw in Japan, like people working to the detriment of their relationships and being absorbed in their phones.

"Kabukicho," he said. "The hotel my company booked is in Kabukicho."

That seemed a little strange to me. You might call Kabukicho the red-light district in Tokyo. Hostess bars, nightclubs, street prostitutes — not an environment where I would have expected a classic hotel chain.

When we turned the corner and I saw our hotel, it was clear to me. It had no windows, and the prices were calculated in hours. My friend's company had accidentally booked a Love Hotel for us. Now, a Love Hotel isn't as disreputable as you might think it is — okay, except for the whirlpool with pink lighting and the plush slippers. It is an important part of everyday Japanese culture. Young lovers who still live with their parents, married couples whose homes lack privacy, or even people having affairs meet in these hourly hotels to let go of their inhibitions.

From 2010 to 2011 I studied at a university in Japan and got to know the strange relationship Japanese culture has to love and sexuality. I'd almost call it schizophrenic. On the one hand, Japanese people would never, not even among friends, use words like "penis" or "vagina" (when an exchange student once did it, the Japanese were embarrassed). On the other hand, more than once I found myself sitting on the subway next to a businessman who, quite unashamedly, leafed through hard-core manga porn.

Japan's sex problem

 But what frightens me the most is that many of the things I found strange back then, seven years ago, I see today in Europe.

Japan has a sex problem. Economists speak of a "demographic time bomb." The population is getting older and older, but fewer and fewer children are being born.

This is also a problem in other industrialized countries, but nowhere more devastating than in Japan. The nation suffers from the fact that declining consumption weakens the economy. This causes families to have fewer children, which in turn weakens the economy even further. On average, women in Japan have 1.41 children.

Japan has become a sexless and celibate society. In a survey conducted by the Meiji Yasuda Institute of Life and Wellness, 39% of Japanese women and 62% of Japanese between 25 and 35 years of age stated that they have never had a really serious relationship.

Lots of work, little pleasure

 Why do so many young people remain alone? Two worlds are currently colliding in Japan: those of the time of the economic miracle and those of modern culture.

During the early 1950s, Japan prioritized economic growth. The government required large companies to offer open-ended jobs and, in return, those companies demanded lifelong loyalty from employees. The model emerged at that time and led to the economic miracle in the 1960s.

At the same time, however, this had the unpleasant side effect that people were working more and more. It is not for nothing that a special word has been created in Japan for those who die as a result of revision: karoshi. I remember the rush hour I had to go through seven years ago, where employees stood in their white shirts and black suit pants and skirts with their iPhones, or these white folding white phones, squeezed in the subway.

As a student, I walked past office complexes where all the lights were on at 9 p. m., people sitting in these countless rows of tables staring at their screens. At that time I was already wondering what kind of life it must be that consists only of getting up, working, and sleeping. I'm not surprised these people have no strength for dates.

Women choose career instead of marriage

 But there is another problem: For a long time, it was customary for women to marry quickly after university, and take care of the household and children while their husbands earned money. This unspoken rule is still cemented in the minds of many people. A good friend of mine was asked several times in a derogatory way if she was a lesbian because she is not yet engaged or married at the age of 24. You would think that such a technically advanced country is also socially progressive, but it is not.

However, young people have nevertheless changed. Women feel pressured to give up their careers as soon as they are married, but they don’t want to. The logical consequence? You just stay single.

This development leads to strange trends such as weddings where there is only one bride and no groom — because women marry themselves. They don't want to miss the big day with wedding dress and cake, but don't want to tie themselves to a man.

About a year ago, a headline made the round, saying more and more Japanese people marry their good friends and acquaintances. To be honest: I also have some Japanese girlfriends who simply married their buddies, college mates, and acquaintances. "It's not passionate love, but there is security," said one of them. They live together in an apartment and each of them pursues their own work. Social pressure has lessened.

A strange relationship with sexuality

In addition, there is the strange Japanese relationship to sexuality. You would think that people are looking for one-night stands if they don't want to have a relationship, but many people are too uptight for that. When in doubt, they prefer to concentrate on fictional sex objects in manga porn or video games instead of chatting at a bar.

The Love Hotel is not the result of a sexual revolution — it's the symptom of a major social problem. Those who don't even want to be heard peeing in the toilet (yes, that's why there are automatic rinsing noises at the push of a button) certainly don't want the others to know that they have a sex life.

Since rent prices in Tokyo are among the highest in the world and even four-person families often only live in a 50-square-meter apartment, you have to make a financial and logistical effort to go to a Love Hotel and have sex. According to a survey conducted in 2016, about 4.5 million people aged between 35 and 54 still live with their parents. So the question is obvious: Where should people come together except in hourly hotels?

These people, who are still unmarried at the age of 30 and live with their parents, are called "parasitic singles," so you can imagine how much these people are worth in Japanese society.

Is the problem also affecting Germany?

 So far, there is no empirical evidence that Sekkusu shinai shokogun, as the phenomenon of the sexless society is called, actually exists. However, if we are honest, certain features are now also visible in Germany.

We work as much as we did 25 years ago, according to data from the Federal Statistical Office. Obviously, one third of German companies are working above the limit," said IW CEO Michael Hüther recently to the "Welt." The fact that Germans are spending more time at work is associated with the economic upswing.

I see these zombies, who are stuck together with their smartphones in the subway and don't see their surroundings anymore, more and more often in Germany. Then let's consider another study from the "Archives of Sexual Behaviour" from 2016, according to which young people in the USA, a western country, have less sex nowadays than the generation X and baby boomers. This phenomenon is no longer as Japanese as one might think.

Technical progress is also part of our culture. High-tech snoops, virtual figures, humanized robots — what we might have always found odd about Japanese or Chinese culture up to now will soon be able to assert itself in our country as well. If no one needs a partner anymore (not to mention having the time for one), then Germany can also become a "demographic time bomb."

I spent a year experiencing what an outdated, overworked, and inhibited society looks like. Don't get me wrong: The year in Japan was one of my best. But I don't wish it for my everyday life.
