"terrible change for the worse. come at once. do not lose an hour." "my news today is not so good, lucy has gone back a bit." i LOVE this about dracula. i love that the characters lie to each other in this wholly natural way, such as any person might. they lie by omission or make things seem less bad than they are bc to let others know is to worry them, and that most be avoided at all costs. lucy acts as if everything is all right to everyone who's not a doctor, and even then she doesn't like speaking about herself. seward straight up lies to arthur because he does not want him to feel even more torn between his father and his betrothed. there's such a day-to-day human way of interaction to these characters on the pages. even if they're fictional characters from a nineteenth-century book, this at least is something that is wholly recognisable to everyone who reads about them
