I have a hot take on Courtney and Shayne's announcement! And I'm going to preface this by saying that I do not mean this as hate!! Shayne has been my favorite Smosh cast member since I started watching them years ago. I'm just having a hard time wrapping my brain around all of this because what the actual fuck??, ya know???

This just feels SUPER weird to me! When it was first announced, my first thought was like, "the joke is probably going to end up being that it isn't a joke", and then it went to thinking that they were actually together but the getting married part wasn't true and I was pretty much convinced that that was what it was. There had been rumors about them dating for quite a while and I figured this was probably their way of confirming all of that. But it felt too weird that they'd actually get married. They had been shipped together for ages, it had been like an ongoing thing, they did that video where they said they weren't dating and they'd probably never date because they saw each other as siblings and all of that. AND YES, I am fully aware that even if they really genuinely felt like that, which I'm sure they probably did in some sense because they've had a close friendship, feelings can change at any point! It also reminded me a lot of Matt Cutshall and Arielle Vandenberg when they were on Vine. EVERYONE shipped them and were like, "When are you going to get together???" and Arielle was like, "No, that's never going to happen ever, I don't see him that way!!" and now they're married. So I KNOW things like that happen all of the time. But it still SEEMS SO WEIRD, and I honestly don't know why. I'm still half expecting them to release some kind of video or something that's going to be like "I'm serving divorce papers" or they're going to have a podcast episode where they're going to confess it all and say that it was all a huge prank. Doesn't matter how much "proof" there is that it's real, doesn't matter hos many times they say that's real, my brain is still trying to convince me that something about it is fake. The comments on their posts from the other cast members felt fake, they were just playing along. The captions on the pictures felt fake. Now there's a People's Magazine article about it?? Damien confirmed it on his live game feed and part of me felt like if it was actually real, he'd make a bigger deal about it cause it's his best friend, but that was the only thing I've seen from him, unless he's posted something more recently, I stopped stalking people's pages yesterday. But yeah. This is where I'm currently at! And I don't know if I'm the only one still "in denial" or whatever, but here we are. Is anyone else still coming down from all of this information we have received the past couple days?? I want to know what people's thoughts are!

It never ceases to amaze me how uninspired some people are with their opinions on the enemies to lovers (and viceversa) dynamic - which half of the time people didn't even ask them lol - and how invariably shows that they think nothing is possible about this beyond some sort shallow and lite version of it, that's not even actually enemies to lovers, or they just think it's nothing but a trashy or crack trope that romanticizes toxic or abusive relationships. And even if some portrayals are like that, that's not the problem and those are more valid than the shallow ones tbh.

This isn't even me trying to talk about antis, this is about people who are generally nice and civil about almost any sort of shipping, but when you mention this particular trope, they just can't seem to visualize anything than the above mentioned examples, and don't understand why anyone could ever like the more "extreme" examples.

And this is just my opinion, of course, but I feel like at least part of the problem comes that they conceptualize the idea of characters being enemies, as nothing but wanting to kill or otherwise hurt each other for no other reason than personal grudges, misunderstanding or just plain toxicity, and don't see the full-blown version, they miss on the whole scenario beyond that dynamic, because in fact, a huge part of the tension comes precisely because the personal desires of the characters, which end going against their goals, their duty, or a promise they can't abandon, and really if there isn't at least a level of opposing goals or ideologies, then I don't count it as enemies to lovers, period.

On the other group that thinks this is all about indulging in toxicity and unhealthy relationships, something that even if it was all there was to enemies to lovers, it still wouldn't be a problem, because yeah, the yearning turned into obsession, the curiosity turned into attraction, the hatred that easily slips into passion, but it's only one of the stages of it, usually the early ones, then it evolves into a relationship that's more stable and reciprocal, but the conflict remains, AND this is where my first point becomes important, because the relationship evolves, but the board in which the story develops, the conflict that makes this, an enemies to lovers scenario is still there, they can't be together, because of that. And when a well-developed enemies to lovers story does this well and reaches this point, the so-called "toxicity" that some people love to denounce, takes in a new form, which form you ask? Well, that's the fun part, there are many possibilities on how this ends up resolved, and I have some examples that I'll summarize here, that, by the way, are ALL original media, I clarify this because I rather not spoil anyone from anything they may be working their way through, and because, there are also people who believe this plot-line only works in fanworks:

"Why can't you abandon them and stay with me?" "Are you willing to abandon the promise to your people for me?" Said by the main couple, on opposing sides of an upcoming war, after laying the cards on their situation, not hatred but also no concession, neither can give up on their respective sides.

"I do not wish to survive when my home is collapsed." Said by one character after the other tries to save only them from a disaster they're helping to bring, also, no hatred or even animosity, just a constant tip-toeing game of 'I know you know what I know' until the unavoidable happens.

"Didn't you say before today that you trusted me? That you liked me?" "Because I'm naive, I like you, but now I've seen through you, and even if I still like you I don't believe you anymore, and thus, I'll slowly, little by little, not like you anymore..." exchange after an important reveal from the love interest's real goals, this one is interesting because the former wants to hate the other, but they can't, not yet, and the other is still in a weird denial of having their cake and eating it too.

"I don't care if you did or not, I just care that you enjoyed it." "And why shouldn't I delight to see you squirm? You tricked me, played me for a fool," Exchange while dancing and humiliating the other but also in the middle of having to figure out how not to get one of them killed.

"You're the one I love, but how do you feel?" "We're married of cou-" "I'm not talking about marital duty, but I understand, love doesn't come easy, I'll wait" Very sweet exchange right? Except that the loved one thinks to themselves, that this is the only thing they can't grant and one day they'll be able to tell the truth, but for now they have to lie, why? Because they'll have to kill the other one day.

Probably gonna get hate for this and I’m not even 100% convinced myself that they’re actually in a romantic relationship because obviously we don’t really know shit lol, but if it turned out that they’re just best friends and their relationship is and has always been just purely platonic, I’d definitely accuse them of queer baiting… 🙃

I feel like there’s a line that they’ve crossed with each other and their antics for it to be just two friends being cute and performing. They know that there’s a huge fan base and they see what people talk online and they are constantly adding fuel to the fire themselves by being very touchy touchy with each other (way more so than with any other member tho I’m sure other shippers would highly disagree lol), making comments about each other, mentioning private vacations and everything that is taekook. We see antis commenting that they hate being shipped and it makes them uncomfortable and that one Weverse answer by Tae is some sort of a passage from a bible to them, but obviously we’ve never gotten any actual denial from them as far as I know, they haven’t changed their behaviors at all and that answer the antis keep holding on to for dear life can be interpreted in many ways. But obviously they wouldn’t deny anything if everything is only fanservice, because that would be bad for business and in the end, they are part of a multi billion dollar industry. 🙃

Obviously they don’t owe anyone any answers about their personal lives and in a way they’re definitely not responsible for all the shippers, but then again, I feel like on some level they kinda are because their behavior encourages the fans to keep going. 🫠

Well I'm not going to hate on you, anon, and I would hope that no one else will either, but I disagree with you. In my opinion, it's not up to us or anyone else to determine what is and is not an appropriate level of touchiness between two people who are friends or otherwise.

I've said it before and I stand by it: calling anything any of the members do "baiting" is too much in my opinion. It's true that they know shippers exist and some things will always be interpreted through that lens by some people, but it's also true that no matter what they do and how frequently they demonstrate their closeness, there will always be people who see them as uncomfortable with each other. So why wouldn't they just interact in whatever way that comes naturally to them? Why should they or would they change the way they act within the boundaries already set for them, just based on how some fans will interpret it? Personally, I obviously feel that the way they act makes it seem likely that they're romantically involved, but as I said earlier, they haven't done anything to make that reading overt and unavoidable.

This isn't a "gay for pay" kind of scenario because none of the members have ever gone that far. There's also the fact that, regardless of whether any of them are involved with each other specifically, any number of them may not be straight and could still be expressing their platonic bonds in ways that read to some people as queer because they are -- ways that come naturally to them, are genuine, are platonic, and are queer, because queer people have friends and those friendships don't always look the same as friendships between straight people.

As far as getting a denial from them goes, it seems to be policy not to address intra-group relationships (aka shipping) at all. It's not like there have been denials for Sope or Namjin either. I imagine there are a number of reasons for this, first and foremost being that shipping is good for business, and I imagine this would be the policy whether any of these relationships was actually real or not. This is a big part of why I personally have never taken Taehyung's Weverse comment as being against shipping.

I understand your feelings about them potentially baiting the ship specifically, and we really don't know enough for me to tell you there's no way that's the case -- maybe it is for all I know. For me, though, I'd rather assume better of people until I know otherwise, for one thing. More than that, whether or not Tae and JK are together, I feel pretty confident in my guess that neither of them are straight, so I personally would feel a lot less comfortable accusing either of them of any kind of baiting, even if it did turn out that they were never involved with each other in particular.

Besides all of that, a lot of their most telling moments have always been the ones just barely caught on camera, or not shown at all and we just hear about them later. How can I consider it baiting for them to act close on cam if we know that they act close off cam too? Not to mention the subtlety of a lot (not all, of course) of what they do. It's hard to consider the subtle stuff baiting, and I feel like there's a lot more of that over the years. Add to all of that the fact that if they're not literally onstage at the time, there's no real, direct benefit to any of this. They're just as likely to gather criticism as they are praise, which makes it seem that much more likely to me that whatever interactions they have, at least off stage, they have primarily for their own benefit.

Of course, these are all my opinions. You're entitled to yours and to your feelings. I'm not trying to tell you that you can't feel the way you do, only to explain why I personally wouldn't feel that way. Either way, we're talking about a hypothetical future scenario where we not only find out their relationship status, but also know the details of what it's always been, and it seems unlikely that that will ever happen.

My thoughts on 139 as an Ereri shipper

Buckle up for a long read and some unpopular opinions haha. Feel free to add on/ correct me but this is only how I feel so take it with a pinch of salt, I'm not asking anyone to change how they feel because we're all feeling some feels right now and your grief is valid. I just really wanna talk about the chapter before I go back to my Yaoi ship. (Forgive my grammar errors and all I wrote this at 5am and I'll probably come back and fix the spelling and stuff later today)

Thoughts on ch 139:

Well... here we are guys. The last chapter, it's been one hell of a ride and even though I have only been a part of the community for three years I'm still sad it ended. (Not to mention it finished 4 days before my birthday but that's just an extra oof) I keep seeing a lot of Mikasa hate and even though I used to despise her this chapter really got me thinking and damn, she's definitely one of the strongest characters (second to Levi at least in terms of resolve but hey I'm biased lol) she killed the person she loved, who pushed her away time and time again, and until the very end wanted to save him yet she was the one who ended it all. I doubt I could do that if my girlfriend was doing something similar... but I guess most people are like that. I admit, when I read the chapter at work I began crying in the break room, not because the ending caught me off guard, it was about what I was expecting, but I'm still sad Eren died. All this stuff was foreshadowed through especially the last few chapters and I kind of hopped into the manga around when Zeke blew Levi up, and even then... I feel like I knew this would be how it turned out some time last year? It was mostly predictable since this story, from it's inception, has done nothing but break the shonen stereotype time and time again and this was just the kind of ending that would shatter the mould and make it worthy of that moniker. Now am I happy that Eremika is canon? Not really, in fact not at all I'm mad. Although tbh it's not that I really expected a same sex, age gap relationship to be canon in mainstream manga, but this is what fan fiction is made for right? Besides as much as this manga has challenged or straight up ignored it's very obvious what the intended ship was going to be from the start. Even still the confession at the end by Eren is honestly OOC from most of everything else he's said/done and feels forced but, 🤷🏻‍♀️ like... the ending would have been better if Eren's feelings stayed vague so we could come to our own conclusion. If I had my way I'd have Eren confessing to Levi and they'd run off to live in secret but again... that isn't how it ended and I'm accepting that even if I don't like it. (Plus I can read/write a fanfic of a 'better' ending to make myself feel better) but I'm glad I stuck around for such a bitter sweet end.

Eren's character:

Now I love Eren as much as anyone else, but I see lots of people crying "character assassination" and I feel this personally isnt true at least not completely. We're all grieving right now and I know he was so cute and lovable at the start (hell in a way he still is) but this has always been his character. He is the one who most desperately yearns for freedom because feels trapped by his fate more than anyone else. The line "I felt like I had to and I let myself get caught up in the flow" is proof he *knows* he isn't free despite his father's reassurance, and his own repetition of the phrase. There's a common phenomenon with mantras or the practice of repeating something over and over in your head, the more you say it, *the less you believe it* and IMHO Eren never really felt free from the start. He knew his fate was sealed and he probably could have, no... *should* have acted differently yet he himself couldn't change what fate had in store. He just kept moving forward for no other reason than he wanted to save Mikasa, Armin, and his people. He (may have?) sacrificed Carla, not to serve as motivation, but so that he could save Armin later on by eating the Colossal titan instead of burning to death. It must have been a heart wrenching choice to make but he cares for his friends more than anyone else. He gave them a fighting chance and his death gave the alliance a good name so the world (or the 20% left of it) would see they aren't the same as him. Of course I'm thinking, "What if he had Dina free Carla or just let her eat Bert I mean Grisha probably would have passed on the Attack titan to Eren even if Carla had lived," but Armin very well could've died in another way or things could've turned out so much worse for everyone else. But even if Eren hates his choice I think something to note here is he doesn't seem to regret it, taking some of Levi's advice with him to the grave (quite literally) Plus you guys have to remember he died at 19 years old, that is *young* and I may only be a few years older but 18-21 is a huge period of change and you wont make the best choices, he's dealing with all that on top of the memories of the other titan holders, and the founding titan which I think really messed with him more than anything. He even says he only wants to live 10 more years ;-; the poor thing deserved a full life too even if his perception of time is warped and he never got a chance to become an adult.

The aftermath:

Well, everyone seems happy for the most part which is great! The one thing that I didn't expect was for the ending to be bitter sweet rather than total annihilation. Historia really does seem... fuck it I don't know and this is the part that bugs me most is she never really got the ending she deserved and felt kinda... forgotten? It's hard to tell but I think she ended up loving her child in the end... maybe... she's smiling while holding her... right? Levi is out beyond the walls and he may be wheelchair bound and half blind but he's still alive! Now this is honestly my saving grace here I mean god imagine him surviving a literal bomb only to die such a lame and pointless death in the last chapter. My boy made it through everything though and he's still got them dad vibes with Gabi and Falco which is kinds sweet... but I still hate Gabi. I still really hate Gabi, but it's nice to see that they're all somewhat okay. (Plus okay... Eren Canonically being reborn as a bird is kinda hilarious yet fitting since he got his freedom... Parasitic Jaeger haha good one Isayama.) Who knows if the war will ever end, heck Isayama himself said this is only the begining and while the fight goes on they have a chance thanks to Eren sacrificing himself the way he did. He could've made so many other choices and I don't know what could've/would've been better. Maybe Isayama knows but time travel and altering the past opens a whole ass can of worms that is just... like the killing your grandpa paradox kinda thing and if I were writing this story I wouldn't wanna try and deal with that either, especially after writing one story for eleven years.

Anyways this was just my thoughts for now, I may eventually write more and hell I'll probably go back to sweet sweet denial myself, posting contradictions because dammit I love my ereri too much and some people have good points or some posts are just funny in general. You misunderstood my words, I definitely think Izaya doesn't need a lover in canon in order to have a personal resolution, I just named the Shinzaya, Shizaya and Izamika ships because they're objectively the ships with more potential (and quantity of material) to evolve into something else, where situations are ambiguous enough (especially with Shinra and Shizuo) to be read in both ways. I mean, it's really easy to think Izaya might be in unrequited love with his "best friend" who doesn't (2)

give a shit and is totally obsessed with a monster or that is in love with his lifetime rival but in extreme denial because Shizuo’s first rejection hurt him deeply and since his heart is so fragile to break if filled with human love, betrayal or rejection, convincing himself to hate him while destroying his life, is the ultimate form of self-preservation (+ other additional stuff that came later), etc. It’s just a step from the two interpretations, that’s why it would take nothing to (2)

write something about Izaya’s past with Mikage and Kine, he didn’t because he lacked time. No big secret behind it, he was and still is involved in too many projects and lately even got sick and just recently recovered. Dude don’t get mad, I’m not saying that there is 0 potential between Izakage, like they’re already more steps ahead from Izanamie but still doesn’t seems like she’s one of the people who had an epic impact in his life, if by any case it’s revealed that she is, good for you. (3)I’m not really against anything and I read a bit of everything, but if someone comes at me asking: “What Drrr ship has the most potential/double interpretation material to build over in order to make it romantic?” and oc I’d reply Shinzaya, Shizaya and Izamika because I just have eyes to read and what I read tell this. It’s not like I prefer them or something, if Mikage was in Shinra’s place to give an example, that’d be the other way around. It’s nothing personal against the Izakage ship. (4)

If people don’t see potential in something doesn’t mean there isn’t in general, if Shizaya is so popular is specifically because so many people can see it because it’s really easy interpreting certain behaviors in different ways. It’s just Narita who can’t see this or any other mxm ship because is limited by homophobia and all ships need to be straight. But here we’re talking about potential not what will happen in canon, that’s why I say is all wasted unexplored potential. Too bad for him.(5)

Maybe I’m the only one who thinks IzayaxMikage is more or less on the same level of KadotaxIzaya. Like both know Izaya pretty well, they shared the high school period and know and acknowledge his flaws, still they still see some positivity in him. They’re impartial in jugding him, contrary to others who see him as Satan himself or Shinra who knows him more than anyone else still doesn’t care. Difference? None. IzayaxMikage has simply more chances because is a straight ship and that is sad af.

First off, Narita has broken the INCEST taboo, literally having Kurui and Mairu, both girls and sisters, kissing, (whether or not they hold and attraction for Aoba/Kasuka as a side attraction is beside the point) so I HIGHLY doubt he’s a homophobe or worried about every ship being straight, that’s just you being salty over Shizaya not being canon(and don’t say you’re not, because otherwise you wouldn’t care about or have an issue with Narita not acknowledging Shizaya). And it’s not nice to accuse people homophobic unless it comes out of his own mouth, especially considering all the gay jokes and vibes throughout the anime and novels.

Nextly, all of this is you pushing your ship onto me and putting down my ship, which is just rude. On top of that, Claiming that Shizaya has SO MUCH potential while telling me my ship has next to none is also incredibly petty of you. I’m not gonna argue about Shinzaya or IzaMika one way or another, (KEEP IN MIND THAT I AM IN NO WAY BASHING SHIZAYA, I FULLY SUPPORT THE FANART AND FANFICTIONS FOR IT) but Shizaya is honestly the worse pairing to compare to IzaKage or ShinCelty. Unlike with all the other ships in Durarara!! Shizuo and Izaya hate each other, they try to kill each other on a daily basis, they can’t stand each other, they don’t like or admire anything about the other, and would never want to, it’s not even remotely love. It’s pure unrivaled hatred. While I enjoy Shizaya in fanfictions, I would NEVER wish for that pairing to become canon.

And since you have basically put down ShinCelty and said that I shouldn’t go on about what isn’t healthy, let’s go on about what IS healthy. Unlike Shizuo and Izaya, Shinra and Celty never try to kill each other, they are physically attracted to each other, and above all else, Shinra makes Celty feel like an actual human being and Celty inspires Shinra act like a human being and keeps him from making terrible and inhumane choices on more than one occasion(like stopping him from killing Aoba). Celty is the one who encouraged Shinra to go make friends, Celty is the one who looks after him and his wounds after he was attacked by Adabashi, Shinra is the one who helps Celty find happiness and humanity. Yes, Shinra manipulated Celty and Celty was mad at him, but his feelings for her were still genuine, even if he was selfish and very questionable, arguably having even less morals than Izaya. But he never tried to have her killed, they don’t throw huge objects or knives at each other on a daily basis, they don’t frame each other for crimes, they don’t tell each other they’re not allowed to come into Ikebukuro or act like they own the town, they don’t prevent the other from making connections, or any of that. Shinra may have lied to her on more than one occasion, and may be twisted and done a lot of twisted things, but in comparison to Shizaya, Shincelty is innocent as hell and to even try to compare Shizaya to ShinCelty is really looking bad on you. I don’t ship ShinCelty or Izakage because it’s a straight, I ship it because of the mutual understanding and appreciation I feel they have for one another.

I don’t see Shizaya as having potential in canon, Because Shizuo and Izaya bring out the worst in each other, they make each other’s lives worse(And Izaya literally wants Shizuo to become a monster, and can’t stand when he acts nice or like a human, unlike Shinra who would support Celty no matter what path she chose). Shizuo and Izaya want to avoid each other, especially in the novels, yet they keep picking fights and could NEVER get along. So comparing that level of toxicity to the level of toxicity of any of the mutual couples in Durarara is redundant. Hell, SHIZAYA MIGHT AS WELL BE DIOxJOJO FROM JBA BECAUSE IT’S JUST THAT BAD OF A HATRED. Though knowing you, you probably ship that.

Unlike you, I’m looking at logic. Hate is hate. That’s just a fact. Hate to that extreme doesn’t turn into love.

On top of that, while maybe Izaya was angry about the rejection, he wanted to use Shizuo. And their first interaction wasn’t even in the novels from what I recall, that was anime only. But Shizuo had heard about the kind of person Izaya was beforehand, and Izaya had heard about Shizuo as well. Izaya approached Shizuo with the intentions to manipulate him. And Shizuo doesn’t help anything throughout the series. He only makes everything worse. Again, I don’t like fighting over ships, but you’re the one who came onto MY post and started attacking me, putting my ship down, and spamming my inbox with biased propoganda about why Shizaya would work and why IzaKage wouldn’t. Quite frankly, I’m getting tired of this.Also, just because something is super popular doesn’t always make that great. A lot of people out there ship pedophilia (30 year olds with 12 year olds or younger) more than they ship the actual canon pairings of some of the anime out there, but that doesn’t make it okay.Anyway, I’m done arguing about this.(I realized too late you said it WASN’T that you thought it had no potential. I feel like an idiot now, but I’m not taking back a lot of the other things I’ve said.
