The Power of Looking
“Looking involves learning to interpret and, like other practices, looking involves relationships of power....
To be made to look, to try to get someone to look at you or at something you want to be noticed, or to engage in an exchange of looks, involves a play of power.” - Sturken, M. Cartwright, L. (2004) Practices of Looking.
My thoughts: To me, the power of looking in today’s modern society involves surveillance and security that becomes our everyday of others looking out for us. This could involve malicious intent or it could be what we need to keep safe/have evidence.
The Panopticon
Tumblr media
This method ensured the safety of inmates so that it would not be simple to get away with crimes within the prison. This is one example of how  The Panopticon Is used in modern society to uphold the law. I also found that  the Panopticon was a metaphor that allowed Foucault to explore the relationship between 1.) systems of social control and people in a disciplinary situation and, 2.) the power-knowledge concept. In his view, power and knowledge comes from observing others. Furthing the example of it’s history.
Power:
Power is reinforced through language
Bodies act under strict constraints of power exercised by institutions
The Power of Subversion
Gender is a social construct and is performative
The structure of power is Patriarchal

RESEARCH QUESTIONS
Drawing Power: How depictions of superheros have changed in the Marvel Universe from the 1960s to the present day -
When asking myself the question of “Why are we so obsessed with superhero movies?”, I came to think about the reality's that it allows us to enter, making us live out a fantasy world that we all know can never happen in real life. Not only is it a way to free our minds, it is a mirror of human experience that brings it more close to home, relating the characters to the audience.
A post-structural analysis of Power and Illustration in the graphic novels of Frank Miller  -
Miller’s comics sparked a legacy of profound grittiness and raw emotion in his groundbreaking stewardship of DC Comics' iconic Batman. With batman being the iconic figure that he is today its a huge relation to power for both Frank Miller and Batman. Frank rises to fame by creating a superhero that is the intimate expression of power and control.
Power Play: A history of Alan Moore mocking authority -
Alan Moore is an English writer known primarily for his work in comic books including Watchmen and V for Vendetta, Both films structure the use of power around justice and crime, very real things of today that make the writers bring in what they already know from the world and shape it to be much more fun!
Imbalance of power: Becoming Unbecoming and readdressing female histories -
In today’s culture, feminism is widely celebrated (for good reason) due to the many years of repression by men and the rest of the world. Because women were ‘to be seen and not heard’ around the 1800 hundreds right up until the 1950s, were women decided to take a stand. For example the Suffragettes fought for the right to vote in public elections, something that was highly frowned apon was the beginning of the rise of female history, as for the first time it gave women the right to live their own life and beat repression.

MY THOUGHTS:
By recycling the materials of old furniture and recreating them brand new once again gives new life and narrative to family's, it can bring happiness to a new home by reliving again.  They first brought back their finds making the recycled furniture in their workshop, but they soon realised it made more sense to build the tables, stools and chairs directly on site, making art in their spare time.

POTENTIAL RESEARCH QUESTIONS:
From one to many: how Greta Thunberg’s perseverance made a difference in a world of indifference -
I believe is is mostly due to her age, as the adults of the world live each day seeing the same 20 - 50 something talk about global warming it don’t seem to faze anybody but due to her age people are seeing this as a child who should be playing but instead is fighting to save the world, that’s why people listen know. she has made a difference through global meetings and speeches about the crisis we undergo daily and seems to have a following big enough to change.
Say Nothing, Do Nothing, Be Nothing: the purpose of the Crit in Art and Design -
In the lecture we naturally discuss the importance of being our own critique and making our judgements through our our thoughts and experiences. It is also extremely important that we allow others to get engaged with projects for feedback . In art and design this could mean many things, for instance by judging others work your allowing yourself to let their opinions into you life.

Dominant culture. A Dictionary of Sociology. . Encyclopedia.com.
Dominant culture:  a dominant culture is one that is able, through economic or political power, to impose its values, language, and ways of behaving on a subordinate culture or cultures. This may be achieved through legal or political suppression of other sets of values and patterns of behaviour, or by monopolizing the media of communication.
Subculture: Subcultures are smaller groups within the larger culture that have slightly different—or additional—traditions and ideas. They tend to share much in common with the larger culture and typically interact with members of the majority on a regular basis. Most people belong to at least one group that can be classified as a subculture.
Feminist Critique:
The role of women/girls is largely ignored.
The experience of youth is gendered.
Wider gender politics can be investigated through the study of youth subcultures.
Haul Girls
“In fact, the closest thing to the old model of a subculture I've come across is Helina and the haul girls. Their videos are about conspicuous consumption: a public display of their good taste, carefully assembled with precise attention to detail. When you put it like that – and at the risk of incurring a fatwah from middle-aged Paul Weller fans – they sound remarkably like mods.”
-Alexis Petridis
Conspicuous Consumption:
A term introduced by the Norwegian-American economist and sociologist Thorstein Veblen in his book "The Theory of the Leisure Class" (1899). The term refers to consumers who buy expensive items to display wealth and income rather than to cover the real needs of the consumer.
These images of decadence can also offer the opportunity to imagine a very different world, where wealth is not simply defined by money and possessions but by good health, valuable experiences, and the strength of social relationships.

UTOPIA AND DYSTOPIA
Hieronymus Bosch
The Garden of Earthly Delights is the modern title given to a triptych oil painting on oak panel painted by the Early Netherlandish master Hieronymus Bosch, between 1490 and 1510, when Bosch was between 40 and 60 years old. It has been housed in the Museo del Prado in Madrid since 1939.
I believe that the painting is a clear representation of what haven, purgatory and hell were perceived to look like at that time. Another use of power in this painting as it makes people act proper in their life to control order through fear of ending up in hell.
