#it's because scanning a book and creating an ocr digital file are not the same thing #and lending out more copies than you have like they did in 2020 is copyright infringement #be mad at random authors and publishers all you like but under existing copyright law they aren't allowed to do that #and maybe copyright should be different but risking ia to challenge laws is in fact a risk #I'm mad af that they did this #if they had asked a lawyer they'd have been told not to #so they either did it recklessly or ignored the lawyer which is a different kind of reckless #the people who put ia at risk was the ia #no one held a gun to their head and made them do that #and i promise you that the author you're mad at is not how the publishers find out about it since they were on npr about it #if you do publicity about your copyright infringement the publishers might hear about it #and everyone being like time to do piracy is ia is fine is not actually helping the argument that they aren't facilitating piracy
