Hold fast. Hands and knuckles, by tradition, are about the last spot you should get tattooed. During- incredibly painful- get ready with some ice to help with swelling- don’t do anything for a couple days of you can- after: doesn’t usually hold well. The more beat up your hands are- the more these will look awful years from now. When you commit to hand tattoos- you commit to accepting the risks- and probable touchups - socially: it’s a very bold statement that you can’t undo. A percentage of people will treat you differently- sometimes it will be an outward boldness -criticisms and prejudice- maybe only a subtly of a clerk not handing you your change, but placing it on the table. Society for sure has softened some on the prejudice- but we can’t be angrier for it- it’s a mantle we took on willingly. We had a choice. Unlike race or sex- we choose to get a tattoo. The warning aside- this is Jon. He has worn public tattoos since before I’ve known him- some 30 years if I were to guess. This tattoo I believe won’t hurt his career or his lot in life. So when he asked I couldn’t turn him down. The rest of you young people with years of tangos to dance- ...... I usually don’t do these. “Hold fast”.
