22. The Cliffnotes Version

Written chapter. Warnings for talk of cheating, insults/verbal abuse.

Makki practically dragged Terushima into the car with him as soon as they pulled up outside his hotel. He knew they were getting stares, and at least one person probably thought it was some kind of kidnapping but he really didn’t care, not when they all knew y/n was hurting.

Sandwiched between Makki and Mattsun, Terushima frowned down at his phone. “Okay, so, who is this Atsumu Miya guy? I get he’s an actor, but what’s with all this bullshit?”

Makki sighed. “It’s going to be a very long story. And we weren’t there for most of it…”

“Are you sure we should be telling him?” Oikawa piped up from the front, shooting a frown through the rear view mirror. 

“He should know.” Iwaizumi huffed. “Go on Makki.”

“Okay.” Makki nodded. “Y/n started out working with Semi’s band, I don’t know how much you know about him but they've been friends a  really long time.  Her work was all behind the scenes at the time so noone knew who she was, except the band. She was working on her degree and the band themselves weren't big yet. Far from it. So it was easy enough for her to do both. Anyway, that’s the background more or less, from Semi ‘cause we didn’t know her back then. So one day, Semi dragged her to an event, some newcomers thing I think, small bands, actors looking for their first break. That kinda stuff.” Makki shrugged, waving a hand dismissively. “Semi took her for some stress relief after exams, the kinda place where she could just kick back and relax, and that's where she met Atsumu. Semi said at the time everyone thought he actually liked her, but in reality looking back we figure he just saw her connection to Semi as a way for him to meet people that would make him famous. He went to events with her and spent most of his time cosying up to film bigwigs and flirting with famous actresses. She kept telling Semi he was just networking and it was fine but I don't think he believed her.”

Terushima growled and shook his head. “What an asshole.”

Mattsun sighed and clapped a hand on his shoulder. “Just wait, it gets worse.”  

“Like he said. It gets worse. Around the time Semi and his band started getting really big she was in her last few months of university. It was maybe a year after they first met? We had just started to get serious about our band but we hadn't signed up with Daichi yet. Anyway, she quit working with Semi to focus on her education, they had just started touring properly and she was in no position to leave with exams and shit so it was a pretty sensible choice. But Atsumu had just landed this job with some big young actress and suddenly y/n was no longer in a position to introduce him to new famous faces…”

"He dump her or something?"

“That would have been preferable. Nah, turns out he'd got that role by fooling around with this actress. And a few others before. He had been distant and shady for ages according to Semi, but she was working so hard she didn't notice. Figured him bailing on their weekly dates more often than not was a work thing. Anyway, as she was finishing up her exams and shit Semi found us, introduced us to Daichi and suggested y/n as our manager. Dai knew how good she was from working with Semi, and with her degree finishing it was the perfect time for her to jump on.” Iwaizumi cut in, eyes fixed on the road in front of him. 

Oikawa scoffed. "It was a bit more complicated than that."

Makki scowled at the pair of them. “This is the cliffnotes version! Anyway, y/n obviously agreed to manage us, and Semi helped set up some joint shows with us which is when everything started to snowball. She walked in on her boyfriend and some actress, funnily enough one he was about to guest on the show of… he said some shit about how she was worthless and he only dated her for her connections but she never helped him. She told him it was over and we all figured that was the end of it. She was pretty torn up over the whole thing but you kinda expect that.

Then we started getting big. Mostly Semi's doing with those joint shows I guess but she worked hard for us y'know? Anyway, we were blowing up.and I don't know whether he was angry we were getting big and she was part of that or he's just a bastard that wanted to hurt her but Atsumu started spreading these awful stories about her. Said she slept her way to where she is, accused her of cheating, using him to make connections… basically flipped the whole story to make her the bad guy and ruin her. Tried to drag Semi through the mud as well. It was a whole shitshow.” Makki winced and rubbed his temples at the memory. 

“And it looks like he’s doing it again?”

“Hey Terushima, that might be the smartest thing you’ve said all day.” Oikawa grinned. “And we’re here. C’mon guys.”

They piled out of the car and headed up towards y/n’s apartment where Semi was waiting for them with her.

“Well, one good thing in this sea of bullshit.” Terushima sighed. “He’s pissed off my bosses with this as well.”

“True.” Makki grinned. “I wouldn’t want to be on Tsukishima’s bad side.”

“Nah. It’s Akaashi-san you should really be scared of. Tsukishima-san is mean and petty, but Akaashi-san can be straight up evil. And if Suga gets himself involved…”

“Really? I thought Akaashi was nice and reserved?”

There was a burst of laughter from Terushima. “Sure, he looks all pretty and sweet but that man is the devil incarnate. How else do you think he gets the other three to behave?”

Iwaizumi grinned. “Fair, c’mon in.”

They were greeted by the sight of y/n bundled up on the couch in a blanket, her head resting in Semi’s lap as he stroked a hand through her hair and spoke softly to her. The sight of her eyes all red and swollen from crying hurt every man there, and between them they swore a silent oath to take the asshole down once and for all.

a/n: exposition dump courtesy of Sejioh. I had this bit of plot planned from the start, but this was the most organic way I could work the whole story in. Sorry again Atsumu

Fun facts:

- you can pry the headcanon that Akaashi is absolutely the scariest one when pissed off from my cold dead hands. Tsukki might be petty and mean, but Akaashi would absolutely ruin you if he thought you deserved it.

- those boys would kill for y/n, no questions asked. They aren't going to, because it would stress her out, but you best believe if any of them see Atsumu he's getting his ass kicked.

- Semi is the best friend anyone could ask for and I love him very much.
