reading a new book and going 'ooh I love how implicit the worldbuilding is they dont do annoying internal monologues that dont make sense to explain the setting they just say things and let you figure it out as you go how neat' and then I look closer at the back cover. book three of three

#i may be stupid. HOWEVER. i am not going to read the first 2 #i like this better #i dont need all that. #no but Literally i was like ooh the characters actually have chemistry and theyve known each other for a While #and the specifics of the world are left unsaid but just mentioned naturally. i dont know exactly what false dawn is but i can take a guess #whats the semantics of dark after? idk but i get the gist that humans cant survive out in it for too long #something happened in the past that killed the dragon companion. i see it as it affects the characters rather than some dramatic flashback #YES this is all because i started book 3 without reading the first 2. in my defense i got it used bookstore and didnt check #but like. it WORKS is the thing. more people should do worldbuilding like this in their first books #because nothing annoys me more than a page long monologue about some innocuous part of the world #that while new to a reader. is mundane to the character. so WHY would they be sitting there thinking at length about it #like YES exposition is necessary but there are good and bad ways to do it #dont tell me how the world works. show me the parts that matter and let me figure it out #anyway. im dumb but this is a better reader experience anyway so. yeehaw
