HISTORIAN
by Oisin Kan
Excerpt from my interview with Judy X, a member of The Historians, discussing stasis technology. Full interview available to subscribers.
Judy, when was the first time you used stasis?
100 years ago. I was 38.
Why did you decide to try it?
Eh, escapism, mostly. I’ve had issues with insomnia all my life. The condition was exacerbated by PTSD from space work. I was losing my mind and had suicide on the brain. I heard about stasis from a friend, got the idea to freeze myself until mental health systems improved. Really, visiting the stasis clinic was the last option. They ran down the risks and I panicked. Instead of 20 years, I decided to stay in stasis for 3 weeks.
What was the first time like?
It changed me. I got a glimpse of what morning people talk about. I was reanimated and for the first time, I felt truly rested. Like God had redigested me and shat me out of his perfect asshole, new and pure.
So you did it again?
I was addicted after the first hit. That first year I went to sleep five times, each session increasing in length. I met others who were addicted. I could see it in their eyes, a certain knowing. Started hanging around with a few of them, eventually syncing our cycles to only wake for the last month of the year.
The Historians?
Correct, that’s what we called one another. We met in Detroit at a club called The Private Library. We chose the city as a joke – if we ended up in a dystopian future, Detroit would remain the same.
Are you still in contact with the other Historians?
Not really, most drifted. I needed change, that’s for sure. The early hedonistic days... back then I’d wake in the basement of The Library on December 1st – bought my own pod eventually –  and I would take any and all drugs, staying awake for the month. I’d rediscover the world, party heavily, disgrace myself at annual family gatherings, before sleeping the rest of the year away.
Will you keep using stasis?
My mind changes but in this moment, yes. I take my path more seriously, as a proper Historian and living record. I’m curious enough to enjoy each new future and patient enough to tell others of the past. But life has become fictional, strange, as if each year I catch up on my favourite series, Earth.
Last question. Best and worst seasons so far?
The best one was 2086. I lived large after winning a billion off my ex-partner. The fool thought rattails wouldn’t be fashionable again. And the worst… probably 2121. Total clusterfuck. Anyway, goodnight, I need sleep.
Thanks, Judy.
