Por eso su uso indiscriminado es un despropósito, uso que además se ofrece en tours turísticos a los viajeros que llegan no solo a Colombia sino a otros países latinoamericanos en busca de probar algo diferente como lo es el yagé o la ayahuasca ya que se les promete que tiene un efecto similar al del LSD solo que de origen “natural”. De esos peligros dan fé no solo otro de sus nombres, conocida también como “soga de los muertos” y los casos de personas muertas durante su consumo, como los reportados en Bogotá en el 2007 con la muerte de un hombre de 33 años por consumo de ayahuasca en uno de los excéntricos rituales y en 2008 cuando una mujer de 40 años murió a los pocos minutos también después de ingerir ayahuasca. Como en el 2010 en Piedecuesta (Santander), en el 2011, y los más recientes que se han dado también en otros países. Uno de esos casos fué el de Henry Miller, de 19 años y originario de Bristol (Inglaterra), quien consumió la planta en dos ocasiones y quien falleció en una de esas ceremonias de toma de yagé.
