BEAUTY IS A MYTH. VISUAL REPRESENTATION IS REAL. If you fit the false description of beauty that is set by the society , you are deemed acceptable. And if you don’t, you might be able to buy the desirable look and become so. This leaves the majority of women feeling shame or that they fall short. These standards, often expressed as visual representations of women, are not representative. In recent years, there has been some attempts of body positivity resulting in media adaption of relatable imagery that reflects women of all colours, shapes, sizes and identities. But we still have a very long way to go. I am trying to introduce ideals and new “standards” into the mix, painting a more realistic picture of what I think true beauty is all about and also what it means to be human. The aim was never to make people feel sorry for us. We both are strong independent women who are self reliant and confident. BRANDS NEED TO BE MULTIFUNCTIONAL AND INCLUSIVE As consumers look to brands as guides, they should be considering beauty holistically, engaging with all women, rather than perpetuating a stereotype of what beauty is. Yet, we only see the surface level of inclusion in beauty – perfect faces without the ordinary – scars, acne, wrinkles, facial hair and all the other parts of a human that are seen as ‘flawed’. Traditionally ‘ugly’ parts of the human experience should be considered part of the normal, diminishing the stigma around what beauty means. By posting these self-portraits with affirmations of an individual’s true worth, I aim to empower followers to gain confidence by looking introspectively, rather than at a number on a scale. BEAUTY : A SIMPLE REALITY SEEN WITH EYES OF LOVE It seems that from the dawn of time, the female form has been revered, sought after, critiqued, and commodified. These days, cities may not be toppling over a pretty face, but society is still up in arms as beauty ideals continue to be a topic of discussion. Everywhere you look, there are images trying to define what it means to be a beautiful woman. There are magazines, billboards, films and social media feeds that signal beauty standards to society. But there is hope that artists, photographers and activists are redefining these standards, maybe even eradicating the existing “norms” altogether. Traditional beauty templates vary across cultures. Regardless of culture, all beauty standards shift and evolve over time. However, confining women to standard templates for what they should look like can be limiting and in some cases even demoralising – specifically when these standards are unattainable. If you fit the description, you are deemed acceptable. And if you don’t, you might be able to buy the desirable look and become so. This leaves the majority of women feeling shame or that they fall short. These standards, often expressed as visual representations of women, are not representative. And, arguably, there is so much discourse surrounding the female form that, if not productive, it can objectify and commercialise women. I will continue to challenge beauty standards and representation, this is only the beginning of all the progress that has yet to be made. As we continue to redefine the standard of beauty, maybe with time we will redefine what it means to be beautiful altogether. It is also important to acknowledge that people are not only being heard – they are also being seen. AYUSH, YOU ARE EXPLOITING THEM! Potarying Babita and Suman in my clothes and jewellery is my attempt to show that people who do not fit in the stereotypical idea of beauty are indeed very beautiful and what we are made to believe is considered beautiful is infact a lie. Yes, the can’t afford my clothing, but this was never about selling my wares it was about changing mindsets when it comes to beauty standards. As for what they are getting out of this - I will not discuss any commercial details here as that is not anyone’s business but theirs and mine. In terms of emotional fulfilment they feel and look beautiful; for once they do not feel invisible; they feel respected and part of a society which they felt they could never get near to and most importantly they feel loved and appreciated. You might argue and say that all of the above is only for a short period of time , which is true but in that short period I have managed to give them what you haven’t, so before you sit behind a screen and criticise me do something to bring about a change. I have given them hope, I have shown them how beautiful they are and I have made them feel loved and if that is exploitation so be it.
