»» ──────ஓ๑⚚๑ஓ ────── «« ʜᴇ ᴡᴀꜱ ʙᴀʀᴇʟʏ out of the door before a loud pop sounded in his ear, the noises escalating to loud banging and snapping all across the hall. it took him little to no time for him to realize what was going on, the noises registering in his head and ringing through his mind as he leaned over to snag his bag, quickly making his way to the door. the one time he wished he had his mom's old gun on him ... he PAUSED in his tracks, realizing that he didn't have his sister's old note on him, so he spun around, seeing the envelope in the middle of the floor. however, right as he bent over to get to the ground, a sudden stabbing sensation exploded within his abdomen, the pain concentrating to a spot on the lower right part of his stomach, realizing in that very split second that he had been shot. his brain immediately registered to the pain in his abdomen, barely focused on anything else, all he was able to focus on was the sheer agony he was drowning in within a matter of seconds. he dragged himself to a vacant corner near the doorway, breathing heavily through gritted teeth as his hand immediately went to the open wound on his stomach, feeling the blood WELLING between his fingers and underneath his nails, soaking through his shirt and pooling on the ground at his side. pictures danced before his vision, the pain coursing through every inch of him ... he should have known better than to come back here.

┊ ┊ ┊ ┊ ☠ . *. ⋆ IT'S ALWAYS THE HEAT. paired with the crackling , the SLIGHT HISS of ash falling against brick , the deep airy ambience it gives off — it adds to the experience , but that searing heat , pulling at his skin to the point where it feels like flesh will begin to melt off bone at any second. that searing heat is what shuts them down.

mind flashes back to the hospital , one of the darker days of their life. the day their mom died , on the brink of the world itself falling apart , when they were only ten years old. the orange flames DANCING ACROSS THE WALLS , spreading across the ground with a briskness only matched by a rabbit being chased by wolves , everything bathed in an eerie warm light that matched the colors of the leaping flames. the infection-riddled woman hanging in arms attached to a body tired from running around , EVERY OUNCE OF STRENGTH engaged within the then-pre teen , every exit blocked by waves and waves of pure fire.

the worst part about it was that it was all his fault.

they could still see their mother's eyes , wide blues dancing with orange , her voice echoing in their mind telling them to put her down and to find a way out. but IT WAS NOT BOTH who made it out ; only him. he still remembered the way her voice was abruptly cut off , the burning ceiling crackling with flames slamming down onto her body , stealing her right out of his life without warning. a terrified ten-year-old who watched their mother die , frozen in fear and horror and grief , DESPITE EVERYTHING SHE HAD EVER SAID TO HIM.

and the child did not make it free without scars , mental and physical.

dark eyes popped open , pulling the young man out of his vision , acutely aware of the heat from the fireplace that still swam around his upper body lightly. IT WAS ALWAYS THE HEAT that was felt first during a fire ; therefore , it was what brought them back to that time. he was acutely aware of the concerned gaze burning into him , but his only response was a deep sigh. ❝ ... why are you staring? i'm fine. ❞

she knew the smell she was tracking ; humans. she'd know that scent anywhere. while not hostile to them, she was wary of those who attempted to get to know her, fiercely loyal to those who protected and befriended her and aggressive to those who did not. she remembered fondly her days with lennie, how he took care of her and helped her fly after the rebirth, how they adventured together and defeated his nemesis, his ex-lover crazed with jealousy who in turn tried to kill him, manipulate the brother of his newfound friend and the only connection his society had to the world of the dead, and cover the world in darkness. they had done so much together that she nearly resisted the call of nature, the calls of another wolf spirit as strong as she, but she and lennie both had DUTIES to attend to, new missions that made it impossible for them to stay together. she had to preserve the flame of protection that had been set upon the earth after katy's defeat, and he made it his duty to set out and search for the son that katy bore prior to her untimely death. she missed his face, his kindness, how he took care of her, how much she knew he cared for ione, his best friend and her caretaker in life ... perhaps it was time to start anew.

she crept along the path that led to a clearing, the scent growing stronger with the light that grew up above, and she saw an unfamiliar human, stretching out to feel the fire on their cold hands. the flames called to her, like they always did ; her energy reached out, feeling the hot ashes and gas gingerly caressing along the edges of her mind, putting her at ease. in her trance, she crept forward, snapping herself out of it as the sharp CRACK of a twig underneath her paw sounded in her ear, and she froze, not daring to breathe in case the human heard it too.
