┊ ┊ ┊ ┊ ♥︎ . *. ⋆ HE WAS A BIT CAUGHT IN-BETWEEN when it came to eddie's suggestion. on the one hand, if the people who were treating him were getting up to some shady shit behind the back of their patient — anything was possible in hawkins, it was hardly conspiratorial thinking, he justified — he believed that eddie deserved justice, and if that meant getting the supplies he needed but never got, then so be it. but on the other hand, things had gotten quite a bit more chaotic, more UNPREDICTABLE. at this point in time, who knew what they might get into just on the way over?

but hearing it straight from eddie's mouth, how he suspected exactly the same thing as mike, it only pushed him further into that darker, more rebellious corner, a space he'd been mentally inhabiting for the past few years. sure, he'd gotten into trouble for getting into some things before, but never to the extent that would ever involve the law. besides, it wasn't like eddie being out in public was RISKY for him anymore; he guessed it took a near-death experience at the hands of things you were accused of satanically cultivating to clear your name. ❝ what exactly is it we're getting? and what's it for? ❞

"Stealing from the hospital," he responded, not skipping a beat, having had a feeling Mike would agree without being told beforehand what he wanted to do and had his response ready to go. Of course he knew logically that after being told he would likely want more information.

"It's been bothering me since I was in there, they were hiding something from me I'm sure of it, they had some machine that they kept using when they thought I was asleep." He said as he carefully got down off the hood of his van with his guitar, "thought it was a radio at first but couldn't get a good look at it. I need to know what it is." He had no plan, but he knew he needed to get into the storage room to look for whatever they had been using, it was clearly important to him to figure out what it was. He offered his free hand out to Mike, to help him off the hood.

┊ ┊ ┊ ┊ ♥︎ . *. ⋆ HE WASN'T SURE WHAT IT WAS that had initially drawn him to the doorway of his sister's bedroom. maybe it was because of the fact that he could still see some of the animal stickers he'd pasted all over her doorway as a prank when they were children, and he'd had a brief moment of FONDNESS he'd wanted to share.

but hearing what exactly it was that was on nancy's mind, what she wanted to share ... mike was reminded of exactly what it was he was seeking from her. forgiveness. and hopefully a little understanding. despite all of her shortcomings — she was his sister, he knew many of them — something he'd always admired her was her ability to understand things. maybe it's where he got his own COMPASSIONATE nature from. not from mom or dad, but from nancy.

hearing eddie's name sent those familiar ice daggers of grief && guilt straight through mike's heart, and he swallowed thickly against the lump in his throat, tears threatening his eyes if it didn't go down. he'd remembered how he was taken from them. he remembered how steve described it; he'd visibly recoil in HORROR every time he thought to imagine the scene in his mind.

then she mentioned what had happened, what vecna had done to her, and that was all it took to get the dam to break. he didn't crumble — he'd gotten pretty good at not crumbling through fighting his instincts to do so over the years — but instead he hung his head, drawing in a deep, shaky breath. it was an obvious signifier of his fear, and there was no way he'd be able to hide it from nancy.

this was his sister, a person he LOVED very much, despite stubbornly hiding it all the time. he'd already lost eddie, and had been on the verge of losing both will and el multiple times. he couldn't lose her too.

❝ wh-what do we do ... ? ❞ mike murmurs, his voice CRACKING. ❝ h-how do we keep him away from you? ❞

The truth of the matter was, Nancy didn't want to talk about much of what happened while Mike was across the country to anyone, much less to her brother himself, but it was like he could feel she was off. For months now, the two siblings had been back to their usual ways of picking fights more often than not, and Nancy would be lying if she said she didn't even miss how they once were as little kids.

So when Mike carefully let himself into her room, sitting himself down in her desk chair to face her as she read on her bed, Nancy didn't tell him to get out. She didn't roll her eyes, she didn't even pretend to throw something at him. Instead, the older sibling closed her book and sat up more, blue eyes on Mike's brown, she took a breath.

"Do you remember when we promised to tell each other everything? When I first met El?" Nancy asked, wishing she could chip off nail polish from her freshly done manicure but refrained. "I haven't been keeping that up, like, at all, and it's not because I think you'll for some reason go to Mom and Dad," her head shook, brows knitting together briefly. "But more that I wanted to protect you. That's always been my job, and that's always going to be my job," she swallowed the lump in her throat then. "I told you that we all found one of the gates at Eddie's trailer, but I didn't tell you everything."

Even saying Eddie's name still didn't feel right to her, and she knew it would still be difficult for her brother, so she instead hurried on.

"Everyone else got through just fine, then it was just Steve and I left, and I.... I didn't go through the gate like I thought I did. Vecna, he... He got to me, but he for some reason let me go," Nancy's eyes break from her brother's to look down again, as if still trying to make sense of it. "I was in the Harrington's pool, and I saw Barb, and what actually happened to her, and he kept asking me if I remembered what I'd done. You got your best friend back from the Upside Down, Mike. I never did, I never got the chance to."

┊ ┊ ┊ ┊ ♥︎ . *. ⋆ PART OF HIM HAD ASSUMED THAT eddie would have gotten the opportunity to share a space with some of the older kids, perhaps even with his sister, while he was away in california. surely it seemed like they'd been doing the same, with the help of his own other friends; sticking together and supporting each other. he'd already heard nancy's account of when they'd first met, when they CONSPIRED to try and help clear his name. then, as always, the upside down got to them. now wouldn't be the first time he'd felt a burning rage deep inside him towards the mysterious dimension, after all the lives it'd taken and ruined.

he watched the other's hands relax around the instrument, and that similar feeling of INSPIRATION striking whenever he watched eddie, whenever he got to witness him achieve something great. a more preferable outcome may not have been in the cards this time around for eddie, but it still managed get mike's heart aflutter. thankfully, the invitation to do something was a good distraction; he didn't want to delude himself into thinking that eddie knew what it was he was thinking. still, it was a nice thought, a little FANTASY he opted to save for later. ❝ yeah, sure. what is it we're doing? ❞

Mike wasn't wrong, not sleeping alone did make it easier, he found that was the case when he stayed at Steve's, but he didn't think he could keep crashing there all the time. He nodded, curls slipping onto his face as he did, "I'm glad you kids have each other," he couldn't imagine if they had to deal with the years of Upside Down he'd been told about alone, his experience seemed so, different to the others in his mind.

"I can't wait until I can play my guitar properly, that'll probably make things easier, the doctors said it might be a while before I'll be healed enough." He looked at Mike as though he'd just reminded himself of something, pushing the curls that had fallen onto his face behind his ear once more so he wouldn't be tempted to chew on them. "Wanna help me with something?" He felt a distraction was a good call, he wasn't mentally prepared to get too vulnerable, he'd already told Mike about the meds, that was more than he'd told anyone else. Eddie had seemingly forgotten that Mike had come looking for him, clearly having had some reason to seek him out.
