INTENSE, for lack of a better word, but he could almost parse out an underlying sense of fear or unease in the squeeze he gave his hand.

he could almost hear rick's words drowned out by the sudden rush of emotion he felt towards the other, and he couldn't help himself from discreetly squeezing his hand back, the gesture LIGHT && GENTLE, full of nothing but comfort and encouragement.

WAIT, NANCY GOT HIM A PRESENT? but it wasn't his birthday, not as far as he could tell. well, it was a few days ago, but then again, it was very unlike nancy to miss deadlines or forget dates, even the birthday of the brother she didn't pay a ton of attention to. to help with his own SANITY, he chose to believe that she somehow forgot his birthday, opting to take the gift from her and experimentally rip the wrapping paper and packaging aside.

inside was a mug — something he'd been needing for himself rather than taking those of his father's — but the message on it was even more PERPLEXING than the idea of his older sister forgetting his birthday. ' world's best uncle ' ... what in blazes could that mean?

then he remembered, and it all added up. nancy being with steve, spending all her time with him, talking about their future together. the puzzle pieces CLICKED together in his head, hinted by the way his jaw dropped and his eyes popped open in surprise.

❝ hey, have you seen my — ❞ he began to ask carl the question, finding him in the living room even before his feet hit the ground off the stairs, but pretty much stopping dead when he saw where exactly his hoodie ended up. rather, who the culprit of his hoodie theft was. his lips parted, ready to ask the other to hand his hoodie back, until he noticed just how ... COMFORTABLE carl looked in it. he was bunched up at the corner of the couch, a crossword puzzle book and pencil in hand, the fabrics scrunched around his neck and shoulders to almost make him looked like he was wrapped up in a blanket. he swallowed the sudden lump that formed in his throat, shaking his head when the other boy's blue eyes met his expectantly.

❝ ... never mind. ❞ he turned around before his thoughts could overwhelm him, unsure of how to parse through whatever it was that had begun to RACE through his mind. it was fine ... he'd wear his other zip-up jacket. carl looked far too comfortable in his nashville hoodie; he'd let him have it, just this once.

┊ ┊ ┊ ┊ ♥︎ . *. ⋆ THERE WAS AN INSTINCTIVE LURCH IN mike's gut listening to jonathan at first, that familiar protective premonition for himself and his own feelings — as well as will and his feelings — settling deeply inside of him. he'd always taken the safeguarding of his privacy and internal world VERY SERIOUSLY, regardless if it was attempting to be infiltrated by someone he trusted or not. especially regarding something as sensitive as this, something he'd been attempting to hide for so many years out of his fear of being ostracized more so than he already was.

he'd even heard the horror stories of teens who ended up getting kicked out of their homes; the chances of that happening to either him or will were SLIM, and jonathan had consistently proven time and time again that not only was he good at keeping a secret, he could be trusted to protect both him and will.

he averts his gaze, acutely aware of how WARM his face was growing — freckled cheeks turning dark pink — as he awkwardly taps the ends of his fingers on the table. ❝ ... i know, but whenever i do ... i feel like i can never find the words? like i never know what to say? i don't know, i just ... i don't know how to be more confident. ❞ he swallows, both surprised and not surprised to find that there was a lump growing. ❝ and i really don't wanna screw it up. telling will would be really important to me. i kinda ... kinda want it to be perfect, you know? and ... i don't know what that'd look like yet. ❞

┊ ┊ ┊ ┊ ♥︎ . *. ⋆ ❝ COME ON, NANCY, IT'S FINE, ❞ HE protests, weakly attempting to squirm away from his sister's fingers tugging at the tie that felt as though it was squeezing the front of his throat. not only did he not want her to mess with it because this was the first time he'd managed to tie a tie in a way he actually LIKED by himself, but he didn't like the way her fingers slid along the skin of his neck in a ticklish manner; he didn't need even more of a reason to hate how SENSITIVE his neck and collarbone area were.

but he knew this was just one of her unique sibling love languages, and it wasn't like he wasn't guilty of doing the same thing. just last month he'd helped holly tie her shoes even though she told him they were fine, but as a protective older brother, he didn't want her to potentially TRIP and fall and get hurt. nancy was probably thinking of the same thing here; it was likely she didn't want mike to suffocate from how tight his tie was. it was also a little messy with the way it was looped around the collar of his shirt.

but that didn't mean he'd stop COMPLAINING; call that a secondary sibling love language. ❝ hey, okay, you can stop now, it looks fine. ❞

there's a lump in his throat, he realizes, but he brushes it off with a laugh, horribly concerned his behavior already would seem SKETCHY to the other. he instead shrugs and turns his head to the side, invitingly tucking a strand of dark curls behind one ear. ❝ i mean ... knock yourself out. ❞

┊ ┊ ┊ ┊ ♥︎ . *. ⋆ IT WAS A BIT OF A silly thing to use as a tool to get what he wanted, but it wasn't like fighting back was a great option, either. will had grown since they had both seen each other in person, and along with that his strength had as well. while mike's own strength had likely IMPROVED as well, he was still quite lanky, and as a result very easy to manhandle.

he figured that the only way he'd get out of this position he found himself forced into — trying to get the madonna tape for his walkman back — was to wield the tickle weapon, reaching for the back of will's knee and breathing a huff of surprise as he topples over, immediately giving mike the upper hand as he continues to EXPLOIT his friend's weakness. it was fun while it lasted, but after a while he could begin to hear the exhaustion in the other's pleas, so he decides to pull back but only after snatching the tape back.

❝ that's why you don't mess with a wheeler, ❞ mike teases, surreptitiously MONITORING will's body language as he helps him to his feet, just to make sure he was okay and to make sure he didn't accidentally go too far. ❝ why'd you snag this one from me anyway? i thought you were more into rock and stuff. ❞

┊ ┊ ┊ ┊ ♥︎ . *. ⋆ IT WAS A BIT NOSTALGIC, COMING back here after god knows how many years. this particular playground hadn't been very heavily in use for the past decade or so; it was probably why their parents decided to take holly somewhere newer, somewhere cleaner where more than half the metal wasn't consumed by some kind of deadly-looking rust. but mike never CONNECTED to that playground as much, whenever he went along with nancy or his mother to allow holly to get her weekend playtime in. he was also, well, getting older. his interests naturally gravitated to other things now.

but this place? it still felt like a second home to him. it was where he and nancy would play as children before holly was born, where he'd often play with lucas and will before dustin came into the picture. it wasn't very SURPRISING to mike how both he and his sister seemed to gravitate right to the swingset, where they'd often push each other as young children, seeing who could push the other higher into the air. he couldn't really try the same now, unfortunately; aging apparently meant he became susceptible to motion sickness doubled with a very lovely fear of heights.

the two must have sat side by side for a good several minutes, the thoughts running through mike's head manifesting as a ticking clock — how lovely that must feel — as he turns to his sister, desperate to get at least one of them out before he became OVERWHELMED by the noise that he was sure every other person who had dealt with vecna had developed a hypersensitivity to. ❝ do you remember how fun this place was? it's such a shame it kinda went to shit before holly could play here. ❞
