Stu furrowed his brow, his mouth slightly agape. He didn't know how to respond because...

Okay, say that he believed it. Say he took those words were true. Say that he smiled and his eyes got all bright and he pulled Billy closer and maybe even kissed him. Say he did all that, and it was a joke. Billy would probably shove him away and laugh at him and it'd feel so shitty and be so embarrassing and that would suck.

But if Stu took it as a joke right off the bat and laughed it off and Billy did mean it. Then maybe Billy would hate him forever because Stu laughed at him and then he wouldn't be in love with him anymore--which, okay, that one seemed less likely, but it was a possibility.

Or maybe Stu would stare at him for a while, and whether he was joking or not, Billy would get annoyed at him and maybe Stu would never know one way or the other.

So he didn't get all emotional about it, and he didn't laugh it off. He scrunched his nose and in a tone of why would you want to do that he asked, "Really?"

John was in the middle of making dinner for them but the tone of Billy's voice immediately brought his attention to the other's comment. He stopped mid-stir and had enough forethought to lower the flame before turning to face him. John felt a deep ache in his chest upon hearing the other admit what he had not seen himself as before. Granted, there was warmth and happiness at hearing what his support helped bring to Billy blunting some of the sharp, sympathetic ache he felt. He crossed the few steps it took to get to where Billy was standing and he slowly slid his hands up Billy's arms. One went back down to lace their fingers together as the other rested on his scruffy cheek. He opened his mouth to respond then shut it again. Sometimes, there were no words that could convey what he needed to say. Instead, John opted for leaning closer until their foreheads pressed together and he gently nuzzled the older man, hand squeezing his fingers.
