Marianas trench??? Hello??? Fun Canada pop punk??
YES!!! I’ve been obsessed for years??? And I honestly don’t get why they don’t have more crossover with 5sos fans because their career trajectories are so similar??
Like they started out firmly pop punk with songs like shaketramp (which is the first song of theirs I heard when the video always played on much music) and decided to break it (which is an all time fave of mine) on their first album (fix me, 2006) the entirety of which is just... so fun, such classics for me as a canadian 90’s kid
Then they started experimenting with more pop melodies on their second album (masterpiece theatre, 2010) with songs like all to myself and acadia, but they were still very guitar heavy. this album featured one of my favourite pop songs of all time, celebrity status, which in my opinion, really paved they way for their next era (this album also features a three piece set of songs, masterpiece theatre 1, 2 and 3, which are THE youngblood era lashton songs and some of my favourite songs of all time)
And then their third album came out (ever after, 2012) which is my absolute favourite album of all time, jfc if you ever listen to one album in its entirety, back to front, let it be this one!! It’s a concept album, which means it’s telling one story with one theme, and every single song transitions into each other so listening to it all together is like listening to one long song. It’s beautiful, it’s heartbreaking and my very very favourite songs of all time are on here: ever after and porcelain (porcelain is THE malum song for anyone wondering). They also had massive hits on this album (in Canada anyways) that fucking SLAP like haven’t had enough, desperate measures, fallout and stutter, the last one being my favourite! If you like big harmonies and vocal walls like 5sos do in red desert or wildflower, listen to this song, you WILL NOT be dissapointed. (also lowkey think 5sos were inspired my Marianas Trench for those songs because in the past, like 2014-2015, Luke and Ashton said that they wanted to make music with harmonies like Marianas Trench and these are the first songs that really come close).
Fun fact: sometime after this, the lead singer and main writer of Marianas Trench wrote Story of Another Us with Luke and I can really feel the Ever After vibes in that song, if you like that song, listen to By Now
Then we have their fourth album (astoria, 2015). Another concept album and the lyrics on this one BREAK MY HEART they’re so good, songs like astoria and dearly departed are so thematically rich and beautiful, and who do you love has my favourite harmonies in any song I’ve ever heard. This is my favourite era of Marianas Trench, and the themes on calm remind me a lot of the narrative beats on this album (i mean this in a good way, both albums make me very happy)
And their most recent album (phantoms, 2019) is haunting and beautiful and also a concept album, and the concept is very much for me (a haunted house themed album???? Yes please), your ghost and the killing kind are huge standouts and only the lonely survive is pop lyrics at their peak. This album is incredibly unique for them and I absolutely love it, there are several horror movie references if you’re into that (I’m not but they’re there) and there are several references to motifs from their previous albums
I love this band so much and their journey from pop-punk band to strong pop to vocal harmony driven music is very similar to what 5sos have done and I’m not sure why we don’t talk about them more!!
