We don’t meet him in canon so this is still probably the recipe for his character traits/personality but the basic ingredients were suggested right there in ACD!)

- “Good night, Mr Sherlock Holmes” and Adler’s perfect disguise

- Also Sherlock’s house burning plan is bonkers in canon and in every adaptation and I’m delighted every time. (I tricked you dear reader, I already knew these two truths because I love A Scandal in Bohemia in particular. Everyone within the sound of my internet voice should just go read it, it’s so short and so unhinged)

- Sherlock does indeed repeat The Line (“once you’ve eliminated the impossible…”) absolutely as often as he can plausibly fit it into conversation

- Mycroft is The Government. Totally forgot this was not an invention of the BBC show, it’s just late in canon and retconned to have always been true. We meet Mycroft in The Greek Interpreter as a regular boring government employee and he gets the upgrade in The Bruce-Partington Plans; the in-universe explanation is that Sherlock can trust Watson with the truth now, and…

- …Watson being generally trustworthy according to Sherlock’s judgment definitely makes it totally fine for him to have government secrets

- Milverton plot beats are shockingly similar up to the involvement of Moriarty: “oh no milverton has blackmail on a client I better go burgle his house, stay out of it watson” “I’m coming too we’re best friends and roommates even in prison!!” “Ok fine” “awesome. I’m going to go sew burglar masks” (even the fancy-night-out alibi! So, I have thoughts about the 2016 version of Ben 10. Personally, I like it. I think it’s funny and it has that Saturday morning cartoon feeling to it. And it’s given me some good material to work with fan-fiction wise. So I’m putting an idea I had under the cut ((it’s under the cut because I’m discussing spoilers)).

Alright. Here we go.

In this version of Ben 10, a few things have been established.

Gwen is much more supportive and nice to Ben and vice versa. There’s not much animosity, not like the OG series, and it’s pretty clear that Ben and Gwen are best friends.

Characters can be injured. Grandpa Max sprained his ankle in S2 EP28, “Safari Sa’Bad, when Ben, under Tim Buktu’s control, flips him and sends him flying. And Ben was human then. Not to mention that Ben looks visibly roughed up in quite a few episodes.

Ben has several moments spaced across multiple episodes and different seasons where he is seen having doubts about if he’s worthy of wielding the Omnitrix and if it’s really worth all of the fighting and near death experience, to the point where during the end of the Innervasion special he states out loud that he’s not sure he should put the watch back on.

My idea plays with all three of these established things plus a plot from the OG series.

There was one episode in the OG series where Grandpa Max got seriously hurt--as in took a slab of concrete roof to the back hurt--during a battle Ben had against some high-tech robbers. Ben, absolutely distraught about this and feeling as if he’s a danger to those he loves, tries to run away in order to keep them safe. It was a good episode, but there was no lead up to Ben’s feelings of insecurity and the plot was resolved by the end of the episode.

I think 2016 could take that plot, have it make sense in the context of the series, and turn it into an arc.

Here’s how.

So, Gwen is shown to be incredibly supportive of Ben. They work as a team when fighting bad guys, with her being the brains and Ben being the brawn who puts them into motion while she stays in a relatively safe zone. It is also shown many times that Gwen has incredible faith in Ben’s ability to be a hero, to the point where she threw herself at Vilgax in the Omni-Tricked special to help him with no regard for her personal safety. She also stood in front of a mind-controlled Ben in the Innervasion special and was absolutely certain that even when absorbed into a hive mind by a villain that even Vilgax fears that he wouldn’t hurt her or Grandpa Max.

The lack of regard for her personal safety due to her faith in Ben to make sure nothing happens to her would come back to bite her in this hypothetical arc. We would start with a normal episode--Ben finds a villain, fights a villain, etc.--except before that episode and perhaps even in that episode we see him having doubts about the Omnitrix. The villain could be anyone, but the important thing is that something causes Gwen to run out onto the battlefield while Ben is duking it out with the villain of the day.

We’ve established that characters can be injured in this series, so this comes into play. When Gwen runs out onto the battlefield, one of two things could happen.

The villain purposefully targets her and Ben can’t react fast enough.

Gwen gets caught in the crossfire of an attack--Ben’s attack--before he can react.

So Gwen is injured, probably unconscious, and Ben has to finish dealing with the villain while Grandpa Max takes Gwen to a hospital. After the battle, we see just how much Ben is affected by this. He visits the unconscious Gwen in the hospital, and his insecurities finally overwhelm him. He may or may not have an argument with Grandpa Max that leads up to an “It’s all my fault!” moment, or he might just whisper it quietly to himself. It would be in character for him to be incredibly upset about this and blame himself for everything considering how close he is to Gwen in this iteration and how guilty he felt when he injured Grandpa Max under mind control.

So Ben, overwhelmed by guilt and feeling responsible for Gwen’s injuries, comes to the conclusion that he’s too dangerous to be around his family anymore and transforms into XLR8 to put lots of distance between him and his family. That would end the first episode of the arc.

The rest of the arc, however many episodes long it would be, would split between Ben’s life on his own, learning how to function without Gwen, and a recovering Gwen and Grandpa Max fighting bad guys on their own while tracking down Ben.

It would be a great way for Ben’s character to grow and for the show to show just how much the responsibility of being a hero weighs on Ben, a 10 year old child, and it would be an amazing way to flesh out Gwen and Grandpa Max’s characters. Gwen could discover her magic powers or develop other combat skills alongside her skills with technology and Grandpa Max’s past as a Plumber could finally come up whenever the two of them have to deal with an alien threat without Ben and his aliens.

I think the show could pull this type of arc off quite nicely and still balance it with humor like it did with the Omni-Tricked and Innervasion specials. It probably wouldn’t happen though.

I can dream though. And write fan-fiction if I ever find the time.

And he goes for what else can he do? Returning from the kitchens with what was asked. And the pacing begins a new. A scowl kept to himself with the coming and going of the crowned prince. For who would dare tell the future king no? Who would dare bar his way? Not a soul–though one might beg it to be done.

Learned again the usefulness of blankets and the luxury of a pillow.

Never mind at all that his feet stuck off the end. Never mind the room beside her own felt enclosed like a cage. He was near her here, and that meant he was able to do as he’d sworn more easily. And never could it be said that even a mouse or moth passed by her door, without the wolf’s consent.
