when the stars shine
it was weird, the thing that had brought seira to korea had vanished. perhaps in the beginning when she auditioned it was more of an attempt to get away than to become an idol, but along with time, she’d grown fond of it, dancing, rapping, her members. it was a successful start, but ever since the beginning it’d only gone down. the female had hoped for a miracle, for a song to blow up, but no miracle ever happened, the group disbanded. she couldn’t help but wonder, could she have done anything differently? could it have ended differently? there’d gone over four months now, but it was still difficult to not think of it all. suddenly she lived in an apartment by herself, suddenly she was just a barista, suddenly her whole world felt like it'd collapsed.
though it’d been a while now, the thoughts still lingered in her mind, often kept her awake. she couldn’t sleep, so she made some tea and put on a movie, but it didn’t help, so she put on her jacket and shoes, decided fresh air was a good decision. it was nice for the cold air to hit her, her feet took her the way of a park. she spots a bench with someone else already sitting, so she decides to join them on the bench. she shows a slight smile to the other, “hi”.
sending it to... @bexstevie

"i feel like it's gotten harder and harder to see your face!"
admittedly, she was probably to blame for that more than stevie. she's been keeping herself busy after getting back into a regular schedule. while she hasn't returned to working two jobs, she decided to spend the extra time she had to improve herself. not just in singing or dancing but in reaching out to other hobbies. she's gone on a hike or two, have branched out into trying indoor climbing and a few other physical activities that will keep her busy,
"i look a little odd, don't i? this is my teaching attire," she says with a slight scoff because she doubts it's much of an attire. however, she's usually met stevie in more comfortable clothing that this probably looked quite different. "they know they're getting lessons from a high school dropout, but it's still nice to look a little clean cut." it's just a regular slacks and blouse, but it's better than the sweats and joggers she usually wears around.
shaking her head, she looks down at the drink and piece of cake in front of her before clapping her hands together. "enough about me. how have you been? did you get a hair cut?" haein furrowed her brows together before taking a closer look. she's unsure if it's gotten shorter of if it's just been too long that she can't recall what he looked like the last time they met.

jueun was used to the world of competition. she was a pageant girl way back when after all. so she also knew that, at the end of the day, there will be a clear division between the winners and losers. however, she still took it upon herself to try to speak to the other contestants because you never know who could be of help later on in your life.
that's also why she took the liberty to try to remember what everybody performed at their audition. whether it was the song they performed or their special skill, jueun took it upon herself to memorize them for easy conversation starters. so when she found stevie in one of the practice rooms, she snuck up to him before clearing her throat.
"nice skateboarding trick, by the way. i thought it was super cool." she knows the judges weren't super impressed, but she definitely was. "you were on the first season, right?" jueun didn't actually watch the first season, but again, she's heard things and picked up on them as she practiced. "any tips for a newbie like me?" she said wtih a raise of her brow as she rolled out her ankles, preparing for the dance practice she was about to enter.

working on choreography is fun, for the most part. jay didn't do enough of that in the previous mission, as much as he wanted to. then again, there was already so much going on with the concept they had, putting too much into the choreography might've been overkill. this time around though, his new team agreed on a dance break as their intro. he thinks it fits the theme, as long as they keep the choreography fun and... bouncy, for a lack of a better term.
another thing that's funny is being put in the same team as someone who was technically his opponent in the episode prior, like @bexstevie. jay isn't bitter—not really—because his team got compliments too, but still. he isn't one to dimiss someone else's talents when it's right there in front of his face. stevie is good at what he does, a capable dancer too.
"so the point of this dance break is to highlight jiayi as the one everyone has a crush on, right?" he starts, recalling their discussion when brainstorming for the concept. "i'm guessing she'll take the center spot during the introduction, then? that'd make the most sense. like we're introducing her to the audience."

you never really know someone ~ @bexstevie
it was rare to see the club that packed, even on a saturday evening. minjae had been working there for almost a month, yet that was probably the first time she could see that many people mingling and dancing around the place. it made her both excited and anxious — more people usually meant more tips, yet it could also mean a higher chance of someone recognizing her. what she was doing wasn’t exactly legal, and it definitely wouldn’t help her reputation if she had to become a trainee one day. dancing half-naked and stripping in front of clients wasn’t a job that should be associated to a wannabe idol, the black wig covering her hair could only do so much to prevent her reputation from being destroyed before she’d even started to build one. still, it wasn’t like she had any other options — the pay was good and, more importantly, it covered her rent, food, and all the dancing and singing classes she needed to try and make it.
plus, there was the fact that she loved performing, despite the risks and the creeps that sometimes came to the club. that night, at least, despite the wide variety of clients the situation seemed to be pretty easy to deal with. according to what her boss had told her, she was supposed to perform in the private room for a group of guys her age, one of which had decided to celebrate his birthday there. nothing fancy, just for fun — minjae could imagine it was going to be a lot more chill than the last time she’d danced for some business men in their 50s and with hands trying to touch more than they should.
so, she wasn’t too concerned while she walked to the room, downing a small shot of vodka for liquid courage before doing so. it was easy money and the best way to end the night before going home and wash off the makeup and glitters covering all the exposed skin of her body. except that her good mood didn’t last that long. the fake, flirtatious smile min always painted on her face to greet clients was quick to die once she stepped into the room, eyes landing on the group of friends on the sofa — there, among guys and girls giggling and drinking, celebrating a random guy’s birthday, was a face she knew damn well. and min was pretty sure he’d recognized her already. « what are you doing here, stevie? »

the holidays are coming to an end, and there isn't much that yuwol really wants to see from the market at this point—sure, there's probably a lot of things he can explore, but he's not exactly the exploring type in the first place. yuwol finds comfort in the mundane and the known, he doesn't mind a routine, as boring as it may be to some people. rarely does he take a chance on new things ( fear may be a factor in that, something that's instilled in him since long ago ).
with everyone else scrambling to the district in an attempt to scrape through the last few items being sold in the market, yuwol visits ( @bexstevie )'s cafe. he needs his daily dose of caffeine anyway, and catching up with stevie would be an added bonus to that. yuwol isn't the best with small talk in the first place, but stevie always has a lot to say ( a positive, not a negative ) and yuwol likes to listen more than he does talk.
so after ordering his usual, he awaits for a brighter presence to join him along with the drink he asked for. not that he wants to take too much of stevie's time, but still. "hey, is your shift ending yet?" he asks just to make sure. "make it a double by the way, and drink with me."

* ♪ – dancing shoes
joomi hasn't seen stevie in too long. all things considered, their current situation is strange and joomi should certainly hang out with stevie like a normal person in a normal way, but as a trainee, joomi doesn't have the luxury of much time for that. instead, he has to get a little creative, and kill as many birds with as few stones as he can.
luckily, stevie is a good sport about just about everything all the time, so naturally, when joomi texted him after far too long without talking, asking him if he wanted to help him with some christmas shopping, stevie said yes. joomi also needs stevie because he figures stevie is far more of an expert on this subject than joomi.
the shopping in question: dancing shoes. not for himself, though; joomi has sneakers that are serviceable enough for dancing, but he knows someone whose serviceable shoes are on their last legs, pretty worn out by now.
he waffled around trying to figure out what to get jinyoung or christmas. he wanted it to be a good present, but he knew if it was too expensive jinyoung would feel bad. he doubts jinyoung has gotten many presents throughout his life, and since joomi has him to thank for much of his previously-foreign holiday cheer this year, he has to get him one. anything would be fine, probably. he knows jinyoung wouldn't be picky. he could get him socks or something and probably call it a day, but...it doesn't feel right.
he thought of getting him some decent-but-not-too-expensive earbuds or something, because joomi figures he'd use those and his are probably shit, but he knows he needs shoes and he knows he'll use those. there's something frightening about it: loving someone enough to give them something so important; to give them such a concrete, daily reminder of you that will outlive you and whatever you are.
"okay, so," joomi starts, staring down shelves of tennis shoes in one of the department stores that is so brightly lit for the holiday season. "i need something that'll work well for dancing, but that isn't super expensive. probably around like, 60,000 won or less, for a budget. i tried to do some research online, but everything was inconclusive and i figured, you're a dancer, you're probably the best person that can help me." he offers stevie a tiny, hopeful smile.
suddenly, he remembers something. "oh!" he exclaims, "i have something for you," and he reaches into the reusable bag he brought with him– so they wouldn't have to use any plastic bags, but also so he could hold stevie's gift more easily. he pulls out a tiny boxed figurine of a blonde little elf with freckles on its face. "i saw this and thought he looked like you. i figured your mom would like it if anything, so if you hate it, just regift it to her," he laughs lightly. "i kinda forgot to get you something cooler so i just got it from the christmas market before i met you here," he admits.

* FRIGHT NIGHT
ahyoung, so far, has four halloween costumes planned: spiderweb witch, which she already utilized; sexy freddy krueger for one halloween costume contest, and zombie barbie for another. today, she prepared a costume specifically to scare the shit out of her friend she agreed to meet up with today in particular. samara from the ring.
she's meeting up with stevie. stevie, bless his heart, is as enthusiastic and as sweet as can be, but ahyoung kind of gets the vibe that he's like, an easily startled dog. maybe like that video she saw of a dog that was afraid of a banana peel.
the girl from the ring is way scarier than a banana peel, admittedly, so she's sure she'll startle stevie with this one, and it'll be really funny. she'll probably scare any little kids wandering around, too, but that sounds like a skill issue to her. it's not like she's terrorizing lotte world, or something. there are plenty of places they can go if they don't want to be scared on a holiday that is meant to be spooky.
it's a little hard to see through the long black wig covering most of her face, but she can see stevie looking around up ahead of her, near the spot they agreed to meet at. she approaches while his back is turned to her, which is going to make matters even better. once she's close enough, she reaches out and puts a hand on his shoulder, then simply stands there, waiting for the costume and makeup to do its work.

spooky scary karaoke
matt was happy to get out of his apartment, do something else than work and visiting his grandmother. as much as he loved his grandmother (and her cat), and as much as loved his colleagues and students, sometimes he wanted to hang out with people his own age. so when mattheo heard of the halloween market, he made sure to find space in his calendar for it, trying to join as often as he could. for today he’d dragged along stevie, a friend of his, and the two were joining a karaoke event.
“i know i came to korea to become a singer and all, but don’t expect too much from me” mattheo had improved greatly in his singing, but had he become the best? far from it still. “do you wanna choose the song? oh! can we do a duet, that’d be fun, i don’t think i’ve heard you sing before?”.

closed for @bexstevie !
“hey! hey you!” chaeyeon’s voice carries far, far down the busy street, swinging above the heads of others to reach a guy who she never thought she’d see again — steven? steve? stevie? whatever. it’s some diminutive variant of the name for a, in her opinion, highly diminutive type of guy. the one she settles on calling is, “steve!”
her legs aren’t very long (or even long at all in the first place), but over the last three months she’s managed to build back up a significant amount of the stamina she’d lost since she quit dancing all those years ago, so it isn’t long until chaeyeon has caught up with him. she skids to a halt in front of him and plays off her shortness of breath as an exaggerated huff of disapproval.
“i have a bone to pick with you,” says chaeyeon, pout on her lips and hands on her hips. “my old manager called me, and she told me the guy i interviewed was going on television. she tried to make me come back and pull more shifts.” it’s really not his problem, but since she’d quit without notice, the only balm she’d been able to smooth over her exit was the prospect of a new staff member, scouted especially by chaeyeon herself. “i got around it but now i’m totally messed up if i need to go back there… i’m freelance now.” she tacks on that last part quickly, lest he ask any questions.
“…i did watch a bit of next gen though. you were actually alright,” she says after a beat, punctuating the meagre compliment with a shrug. “sorry about how it worked out.”

"do you believe in luck?”
saying it out loud, chaerin realizes it’s a pretty stupid question considering that she believes in luck. while she pushes the idea of hard work getting people to their goals, she’s learned early on that some people are simply born with it. born lucky, as she likes to say.
she’s seen it with other art students. some of them simply have the gift, the talent. sure, they worked hard to get where they can, but chaerin doesn’t think it can be denied that some of them were just born lucky. chaerin thinks that others may find that she was born lucky as well. she has a supportive family, somewhat of a skill in art, and she doesn’t have to worry about the basics of life.
“well, i mean, like do you think you could walk in, buy a lottery and just win it out of the blue? because i’ve heard lotteries also require some kind of prediction and stuff like that.” she’s not entirely sure how true that is. it’s just something she’s picked up from her peers, a couple of college students hoping to hit it big one day and just drop out of school probably.

* back to the same-old
a starter for @bexstevie
     as much as he is bummed about the results of next gen, haneul thinks he has spent far too much time moping about. sure, the call from his mom had kind of put all of his healing on the back burner for a few days but he likes to think he’s bounced back well enough. he probably needs to find a therapist or something, and actually block his mom’s number but he thinks that’s a problem for future haneul. yeah.
     but he has other things, and other people to care more about than his mom, and one of those people is stevie. haneul hasn’t seen stevie since the younger boy was eliminated and he thinks that they’re long overdue for a hangout.
     they had decided to meet up and then see where they wanted to go from there, which is very them and exactly what they always do when they hang out. that’s how they had randomly gone ice skating a few months ago, and haneul still thinks fondly back to that day.

     “hey,” he greets stevie easily, finding his friend at their meeting place without any problem. “miss me?”

arguably, haein had been trying her best to just forget and move on from her elimination. it’s not like she could reverse the judge’s decisions. plus, the experience had been meaningful. she got a taste of what this world would be like once again, and the elimination had only solidified how much she wanted this.
nevertheless, she was still a little bitter. she’s been trying not to show it so much, but the moment she meets up with stevie, she can’t seem to completely hide it. “it just kind of sucks,” she mentions with a shrug as she lightly stabs a piece of the cake they’ve ordered at the cafe.
maybe she shouldn’t be complaining considering they were both eliminated, but she felt more comfortable around stevie, especially considering that he knew all about her dreams and aspirations. the whole reason she came to korea was to debut, and now it’s like she’s gone through two failures. however, she wasn’t about to give up now. “whatever. hopefully, some company saw the program and thought i was more than my tiny voice crack!’

a dance studio in seoul. with @bexstevie.
dance is something that's not a forte of namu's, to be perfectly honest to himself. his forte sits within the skills of singing and performing, rather than anything else. however, that doesn't mean namu is necessarily bad or anything of that nature. he knows he'll be good enough to at least do something, to hopefully become an idol in the future, and get into a group - all fingers crossed, but he does believe that's something that's very much in his future. nonetheless, he knows that he had to really add more onto himself, by making sure that dancing is something that he can also do to chase his dreams; something that he doesn't have to constantly worry himself about, things of that nature. that was something he wanted to shake off of himself, in some retrospect.
that's why he's really thankful that he has a friend, one that can really take his hand and guide him a bit. especially since namu was auditioning for companies, really making sure to he'd be able to dance if they so asked him to an audition. he wanted to make sure he'd actually go in with dancing skills in some retrospect - he's got the vocal skills to blow out of the water, at least. but, he really looked forward to getting to work on a dance today with stevie at least, he was really excited. simply because it's something that namu always really has a lot of fun with.
namu was also sure to bring extra water for the both of them - it might not be needed. but, namu was also someone who likes to be prepared. whenever he's doing something like this, he's always sure to have what he needs, carrying a bag with him. it was almost like a mary poppins bag, he was always able to pull something completely random out of it whenever he was carrying the bag. a bit of time had passed, before a break happens, and a soft giggle leaves his lips. "i think i'm getting the hang of this!" he said, his smile growing a bit more. "do you have enough water?" namu asked, just wanting to be sure.

a boo bash thread for @bexstevie ✨ current location: the haunted house
     she’s so glad that she had somehow managed to convince stevie to come into the haunted house with her. their friendship would probably be one that most people would call unlikely but she, herself, doesn’t really mind. the whole running into each other multiple times until you take the bait and become friends thing feels like a movie trope waiting to happen, but she’s just glad she’s gotten a friend out of it, no matter how weird it was.
     also maybe she’s just happy to have someone around to speak english with that isn’t her brother.
     “are you scared?” saea asks, a mischievous tone in her voice, watching her friend as he reacts to some of the less scary things. one of the workers had jumped out at them when they first entered, causing them both to scream but the fact that he seemed to be more easily scared than her made her less scared.
Tumblr media
     and thus, her plan is born. she has to scare him now, somehow.
     she doesn’t say anything as they continue to make their way through the haunted house though, standing close, their paths lit by the two little flashlights they had been given at the beginning. “are we almost at the end, do you think? i feel like we’ve been in here forever ...” she whispers, the spooky music just loud enough to maybe drown out her words.

* ❁┆boulevard of broken dreams
nayoung’s life is a disaster. it’s been a disaster for months now, so much so that sometimes she can’t believe it. surely, several months after the tragedy of being dropped from her company, something good would come her way. she’d find something new to live for and pick herself up off the floor. the universe would grant her some respite or blessing to make up for the absolute shit show it’s made her existence.
she has no dream, she has no job, she has no motivation, she has no purpose. sure, sometimes she doesn’t even try to do better. sometimes she stays home and plays video games all day–– more often than she’d care to admit. she’s a freeloader now, just like her mother; just like she never wanted to be. her grandparents now help her pay rent because when she is brave enough and strong enough to apply to jobs and go to interviews, she bombs them, because it’s too exhausting to be who everyone wants her to be now. she’s sure her misery seeps into everything she does. she doesn’t know how to fix it.
today, that’s even more apparent. she received an email back from a possible employer telling her they decided to go with someone else, and nayoung thought she did well in presenting herself to them. she thought maybe she had a shot, but no, of course not. she’s pathetic and she’s useless and she is on the fast track to never amounting to anything, just like she always feared. her worst nightmare is now her reality.
is she really a bad person? is this karma for not being kinder? for being so ambitious and cut throat? for doing anything to succeed? she never thought that was wrong, but some people seemed to. is failing at two dreams her punishment?
she doesn’t know that either.
maybe she should’ve just stayed home, but she was hungry and too depressed to fix her own food, and she thought she deserved something nice today after the shit that life threw at her. the nice thing in question: a sandwich at a small diner. this one in particular always reminded her of the kind she’d eat back in colorado on special days, like when she got back after a skating competition. she thought maybe today the association would cheer her up a little–– some subconscious psychological reaction or something ––but all it does is make her cry.
there is so much she misses from her old life; so many broken dreams, all meant for girls younger than she is now, more out of reach than ever. she can never go back to those times. those dreams of hers are lost forever, and she still can’t come to terms with it.
it’s humiliating enough to be eating lunch alone, and even worse to cry into a sandwich, but looking on the bright side, nothing will be worse than getting eliminated in the finale of a survival show, then spraining her ankle and losing her trainee status altogether during another. there are worse things to do than grieve the loss of everything she ever was, even in public.
