eventually I'll read Sasso's writing on Machiavelli, but even reading Najemy's summary of the text with regards to Biagio and Machiavelli's relationship made me feel unwell™ in some kind of way like. even love. what an absolute gut punch pair of words to put in the middle of a sentence. I feel fine about it!! (a lie)

AND NOW. regarding the scene. the letter exchanging hands is referencing their correspondence in general, but to also how Biagio was a collaborator to Machiavelli's plans (and a little bit about how some of Machiavelli's works were copied in Biagio's hand)

1: If someone wanted to really understand you, what would they read, watch, and listen to?

Machiavelli’s letters to and from Biagio Buonaccorsi, Transformers: Autocracy, The Office, The Killers’ “When You Were Young,” and also play Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood. (Also, that one part of the Torah when the spies realize there are already people in the promised land and all the Israelites have a melt down. It’s really relatable content for trans people.)

8: What musical artist have you felt most connected to in your lifetime?

I’m one of those seriously weird and apparently emotionally void people who doesn’t have a super emotional response to music, and even less so to specific artists. I guess I listened to Fall Out Boy a lot when I was young and troubled; “Take This to Your Grave” buoyed me through some very difficult nights.

16: If you’d grown up in a different environment, do you think you’d have turned out the same?

Hard to say! Some things would be the same--I’d still be trans and still be queer. But I might not be an academic, I might not want to become Jewish, I might not believe in the causes I believe in now. (The environment I was raised in was... preeeeeetty antithetical to my whole system of values now.)

Biagio Buonaccorsi a Niccolò Machiavelli / Firenze, 21 ottobre 1502

Besides making fun of his political views, Biagio kept  Niccolò up to date on important events in Florence. He assured him that Lorenzo di Giacomino would soon deliver the wine he had purchased and said Niccolò had been a fool to agree to a price of five ducats: “you are going to be ruined by it,” he noted in jest. He also informed him that in a quarrel over cards, Andrea di Romolo had hurled a wooden shoe at Antonio della Valle, hurting him in the kidney, and the two were in the outs, snarling at each other. In time, they would make peace, but first Antonio would have to convalesce and heal. Finally, after updating Niccolò about Marietta’s anger, Biagio told him that his new long, high-necked outfit (l’uchettone), which Niccolo probably planned to show off in the duke’s presence, was ready. In your Absence, Biagio wrote, I had it made to my measure. I hope it fits you well: if not, “go scratch your ass.” A true friend.

In the same tone-- indeed, telling him to go to the devil with his incessant requests-- Biagio told him that in all of Florence there was not a copy to be found of Plutarch’s Parallel Lives, which Niccolo had asked to be sent to him at Imola.

#niccolo machiavelli #biagio buonaccorsi #marietta corsini #italian renaissance tag #drawing tag #hmmmm. this was interesting bc when i typeset in english i often have an idea of the beat and i'll sometimes set the text to 'sound' better #i read more italian than i speak it so my grasp on where to break up the text for a better flow is. uh. well it's a skill i lack #so if you're italian and the lettering feels stilted: it's because i am not fluent in italian but my god am i trying #on the other hand if the english ever looks stilted: its 3am and im devastated by how the may 9th elections are going down #and i simply do not have it left in to fix things RIP #close enough is good enough #but ANYWAY i think about this letter from biagio to machiavelli SO much i would LOVE to go back in time and listen to them talk #like truly reading anything biagio writes i feel strongly like i can almost hear them irl right now even tho its just a letter you know #he has such a strong voice even when i browse thru these letters really fast i can always tell which one is a biagio letter #even when im not specifically paying attention to the headers :') i love him #komiks tag

ascanio sforza and niccolo machiavelli knew each other!

it was been something that I had wondering about for awhile, since machiavelli and ascanio frequently are found at intersections of interesting moments of history and politics, and I knew that they knew of each other but not if they had. like, actually spoken with each other until I went through a complete collection of machiavelli's writings and correspondences (there is no full english translation of his entire works, and the works that have been translated have never been compiled together, and a lot of english language scholarship on machiavelli focuses on florence exclusively), but machiavelli references conversations he's had with ascanio and he refers to him as ascanio
