Mai Tai experience 2024
Adventures of 60 somethings on board a catamaran.
On the 31st of January 2024, we became the proud owners of a Lagoon 400 2010 model, located in Opua New Zealand.
On the 27th of February, after a few family engagements, we flew to Auckland and drove 3 hours to Opua Marina, gathering some simple supplies on the way. I felt so cold and exhausted when we arrived that I nearly cried at the thought of living on this small, damp and smelly boat for the next 5 years. What had we done, we had a perfectly good life in a house. Why why why?
Tumblr media
The next day was better.
28th February 2024, we sorted out a few things and organized a few others. Where to put clothes, towels, and did we have enough. Sheets were on board, but I threw most out as they were thin and barley reuseable. I started a list of things to but for us and the boat to be comfortable and livable for the next…..years?
So first trip in our hire car to Whangarei, (Pronounced Foneray) we found Spotlight, Countdown, Kmart and Bunnings. We loaded up and drove the 1 hour back to Opua.
1st March 2024: Next day we though we would take her for a spin and charge batteries and empty the black water tank, (the wee and poo tank). So we got out to open water and came into the bay of Russell. Lovely little spot but the anchor wouldn’t go down, so I suggested David just drive around and Ill cook breakfast/brunch.
So we did that and headed back to the marina. On our approach, on an outgoing tide, she was hard to handle. The birth spot was big enough for a catamaran but not big enough for us to park in with our limited experience and a tide that wanted to push us where we did not want to go. So I am running around the deck shouting directions to David. More like, “STOP, YOUR GOING TO HIT THE WHARF”. More things like, “Oh what the FUCK, we are going to crash”. Came out of my mouth on several occasions. We had the neighbours, folk from boats near us, on the dock along with the harbor master Shane. He was speaking calmly to David about pulling back and not so heavy on the power, but I don’t think he could hear him over my screaming, “We are going to crash.”
Tumblr media
Yes we hit the dock and crushed our port side sugar scoop with an indent of about 25cm long and 10cm deep. Not too much damage to the boat but our self esteem was shattered, and I was a nervous wreck. One of our neighbours from a boat named Scallywag, was on the dock to console us. He had just had a similar experience and the tide pushed him into the bow spirt of another boat punching a hole in the side of his 50 ft catamaran…..Ouch.
2nd March 2024: Olly the previous owner came by and he sorted out the windlass, (anchor) not working problem. He said he cleaned up some loose wiring and maybe some got lost in the process and he unplugged the windlass. Not sure but he got it going and answered a lot of David's questions. We told him about our encounter with the dock and he said, “You know what they say, “You haven’t been around if you haven’t run aground”. I’m not sure if that made me feel better but, there you have it.
3rd March 2024: We gathered up our torn confidence and broken dreams decided we had to get back on the horse….so to speak. So out we went for another attempt at having fun on our new boat. This time we dropped the anchor in Russell, and I just put the kettle on when the afternoon storm that was expected at 1pm came early and interrupted our 10am brunch. So up came the anchor and we headed back to the marina. Before we even arrived my stress levels were off the chart. But we listened to Shane and came in on a slack tide and we managed to berth Mai Tai without incident. This was cause for celebration, so we had a shower and went into Paihia for dinner and a bottle of wine.
8th March 2024: Flew back to Sydney for my 60th birthday cruise on board Celebrity Edge to …..of all places, New Zealand. During this cruise we saw parts of the South Island and the sounds that were absolutely breath taking. The enormity of these places that we could now explore in our own boat! So we decided to skip the Rally to Fiji this year and explore New Zealand for 12 months. Plus we are not experienced enough in operating our boat yet. We need time and some nautical miles before we conquer open water.

Iona P&O Cruise Ship Interior Design
25 May 2021
Iona P&O Cruise Ship
Architects: Jestico + Whiles
British cruise ship operator, P&O Cruises, has launched the latest addition to its fleet, Iona, with interiors designed by hospitality experts, Jestico + Whiles.
Britain’s largest and most environmentally friendly ship, powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG) will accommodate up to 5,200 guests.
Iona was named in a spectacular ceremony broadcast to a virtual audience on Sunday May 16 and the ship’s maiden voyage will be on August 7, sailing the UK coast and up to her namesake island.
The award-winning interior design and architecture studio has designed most of the food and beverage spaces throughout the ship and the most spectacular space of all, the soaring triple-height Grand Atrium which captures unprecedented panoramic views across the ever-changing seascape, as far as the horizon.
The Grand Atrium is the heart of Iona, a lively focal point that encapsulates the spirit of the ship, with spectacular views and natural light. This special space is designed to ‘draw the outside in’ and, accordingly, Jestico + Whiles has made the sea the hero of the space, allowing guests to connect with the seascape around them. The Grand Atrium will be, according to the occasion and time of day, either playground or sanctuary.
It a key entertainment space, designed meticulously to effortlessly accommodate a wide variety of experiences, from musical performance to thrilling aerialists.
At other times it will attract guests throughout the day for convivial repose, offering from morning coffee as the sun rises and sundowners at dusk.
An elegant, gravity defying, arcing staircase of Italian marble with a filigree, bright silver serpentine balustrade serves as the centre piece to the space, evoking the glamour of the iconic cruise ships of the early 20th century. Designed as a sculpture, its swooping form leads guests on a journey through the decks offering ever changing views.
The unifying experience of the atrium is always the view to the sea that provides an enchanting, captivating backdrop to the activity within.
Jestico + Whiles’ Associate Director, Jennifer de Vere-Hopkins said: “Despite the challenge of such a large space, we have worked closely with P&O Cruises to create a unique Grand Atrium that is harmonious with the separate venues, making the space both open and intimate. The refocusing of the guest experiences on the sea is the heart of an entirely new brief. The sea becomes the focus of the triple-height space; the sinuous curves are shaped around it, framing and complementing the views to the outside.”
P&O Cruises senior vice president, Paul Ludlow said: “We’ve set out to make sure the sea is the star on Iona, and the design of the Grand Atrium tells you so much about how special she is going to be. Balancing intimate spaces with larger social areas, guests will be wowed by the three storey high glass walls and the ever-changing view they reveal. From the moment they step onto the staircase, I know guests will be swept away by the beautiful design.”
Jestico + Whiles has designed P&O Cruises first ever ‘gastro pub’ – The Keel and Cow – on Deck 8, with views over the Grand Atrium and the ocean. The Glass House on Deck 7 will include an impressive wine list and menu curated by award-winning wine expert Olly Smith, wines from around the world are served by the glass. Wine connoisseurs will be well taken care of with a new experience, Cellar Door at the Glass House will offer wine talks, tastings and wine-pairing dinners. Guests can relax with unbeatable views as they watch impromptu aerial and circus performances in the three-storey high space.
On Deck 6 at the Vistas Cafe Bar there is a unique offer from P&O Cruises Food Hero and master pâtissier Eric Lanlard. The nearby Emerald Bar will evoke the glamour of a 1920s cocktail bar.
Iona was constructed at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany. She holds 5,200 passengers and is the largest cruise ship for the British market.

To say we had an amazing weekend would be an under statement. We traveled, along with our new camera 4 hours north of Auckland to Kerikeri in the Bay of Islands. I have a friend who lives up there and her parents have just retired and conveniently own a very nice boat!
We set sail early Saturday morning to take advantage of the amazing summer weather. We cruised to a popular spot on the bay, the whole in the rock. We then anchored up for the night at an island called Paradise Bay. Here you can walk around the island, kayak, swim and paddle board, we really were in paradise!
We drank wine and had dinner whilst watching the most beautiful sunset, which also gave us great testing opportunities with the camera. With a bit of self help from youtube we are slowly getting the hang of it!
We spent the night on the boat before cruising back Sunday morning.
Starting to feel like every weekend is a holiday at the moment. We are very luckily to have such good friends with lovely families who want to share their love of boats and the Bays!
Four day week this week as the adventures continue to Wanaka and Queenstown next weekend!

An introduction
I was asked by many friends before leaving NZ if I was going to write a blog. Having never done this before I thought it might be a good idea to give it a go even though I’m no writer, and am very techno challenged.  And I have to wonder who would actually be bothered to read it anyway. But thanks to Alenka, who patiently tried to set me up one night before we left Auckland, I’m making a start. And Rebecca, who spent a little bit of time with us on the boat when we first arrived. So here goes…
Tumblr media
Making a dream come true takes a lot of hard work…
It must be a ‘time-of-life’ thing – having a dream to cruise around the Med.  We follow in the wake of many.  It’s a time in ones life when your children are independent, there are no grandchildren to tug at your heart strings, the family pet has died (RIP Bessy) which also reminds me … without wanting to sound flippant, but both sets of parents have long passed, meaning no elderly dependents. We are free, in the most fabulous way. It’s a tangible feeling that both Chris and I feel. What gave us the final nudge was concluding the sale of our business last year.  Although Chris remains a director for the time being, it accelerated our plans to escape the NZ winter.
Having spent last year researching boat models and options, which involved two trips to Europe to view vessels for sale between Spain, Italy, and Greece, we settled on a Ferretti 80 RPH (raised pilot house). It’s a production boat built for the Mediteranean waters, so should be easier to re-sell,  it had the right amount of cabins; four, each with their own head (bathroom) so our friends and family could join us from time to time. It has crew quarters that are not too cramped – and which now house two crew. And it was in Greece.  Where a huge piece of my heart still resides.  Having spent many years here in my younger life.
She is far from being classified a Super Yacht – she’s more of a large family motor launch.  We have renamed her Awanui.  It is a beautiful sounding Maori name. And we were told that we needed to have a Maori name with at least two “A”s in it?  Not sure exactly why? (Graham?) Anyway it looks lovely sign-written on the aft.  Awanui means a large conch shell – or big river – we choose to think of it as the large shell. Not many big rivers around here.
We arrived on the 4th June 2017.  Awanui has been residing in a little marina an hour north of Athens, called Nea Ataki.  We have employed Captain Kostas, mainly as he lives here and overlooks the marina so it is easy to winter the boat in this little village.  He has also had many years experience cruising all around the Med. So he may not be the young Greek God-like specimen I was hoping might take the helm – we’ve gone for experience instead. And he’s delightful.
So too is our Deckhand Essham.  Who couldn’t be more sincere in his efforts to be helpful.  Hesham is Egyptian, and has a young family living there to whom he remits all his wages.  It makes you realize how precious employment is here and how big the sacrifices made, to ensure a steady income. Ironically our OE is coinciding with our daughters’, although she has noted the irony of her working in the refugee camp whilst weekending on the “luxury” boat.
It was by pure coincidence that her work with the NGO, Lighthouse, placed her in Ritsona, which is only a few miles from this Marina in Nea Ataki. She has been there for a month now and will join us for a week later in the Summer when her placement finishes.
Tumblr media
Bex farewelling us before work.
Tumblr media
Rebecca took us to her favourite Taverna in Chalkida, a great local spot. Although...clearly no need to book ahead!
Our first week in Greece involved fitting out the boat with all the toys we know we will enjoy over the coming months.  We now have two foldup E-Bikes, two paddle boards, and two kayaks (the E bikes had to be sent from the UK because when researching Greece vendors from NZ, we simply got no response from the sports shops there despite many promises - so we ended up having to deal with a UK sports shop.
Tumblr media
As we are not a Greek Boat, and VAT is not paid so we have a Transit Log.  This means we cannot stay in Med longer than 6 months a year.  We must have the Transit Log signed and stamped by the Customs Department and the Port Police before we can go cruising. But first we had to pay the electricity bill from the Marina.
This gave us a taste of Greek Beaurocracy.
To pay the electricity bill Chris went into Chalkida with Captain Kosta to the Port Harbour Masters Office.  Capt Kosta marched Chris into a Board Room where a meeting was in full swing, and introduced him to the Mayor of Nea Atarki, the Mayor of Chalkida, the Head of the Port Authority and a couple of other Directors. After that slightly embarrassing interlude Chris then spent about 20 minutes trying to pay the bill. Behind a desk were three girls to take the 173 Euros. One talked, one computed the invoice, and one took the money.
Then a drive to the Customs Office to get the Transit Log signed.  They went to the second floor where the Transit Log was filed and filled in our departure details.  During that process the Customs Official went downstairs to the first floor, twice, to photocopy the documents and returned.  Finally he sent Chris downstairs to get a stamp and signature from the Receptionist, who then handed them over to her Boss who entered Chris’s passport details into his computer, and signed and stamped them again.  Chris then returned to the 2nd floor where the original Customs Official wrote an invoice for 40 Euros and sent them next door to the Cashier.  The Cashier stopped his game of Sudoku to process the payment and kindly gave Chris an apricot to eat while he was doing it.  Having eaten the apricot and paid the 40 Euros, Chris had to return to the Customs Officer again with his receipt and finally the Transit Log was handed over. But it doesn’t stop there.
Next stop was the Port Police, which was in another building a short drive away. Chris submitted the Transit Log to the Port Police who then wrote our departure details into a large ledger book on the counter. More stamping and signing - until finally they were free to go !!
We then stocked the pantry and the freezers.  Captan Kosta drove us to his favourite places – one being the butcher who has 5 sons all of whom help to run the family butchery, and the farm that supplies the meat.  There were photos of the cattle and their farm on the walls and we got to choose our cuts of meat from the whole beast. They chopped it up there and then.  We were told that the farm is totally organic, which was pretty obvious, and that the animals are very happy. We like that.

The next day, on Tuesday June 13th, we set off from Nea Ataki and motored a little way up the island of Evia to a little village called Limini.  Absolutely delightful.  We have now christened the E-bikes (I’m in love with my little Red bullet – goes like a rocket) and rode up to a lookout then back down to the town to buy fresh bread, pastries (naughty) and rock melon (peponi) for breakfast. Past a local fisherman beating his catch of Octopus on the rocks. Cleaning and tenderizing them.  He was very happy to show us the biggest one – he had many.

It is now Sunday afternoon, we are relaxing on the boat awaiting the arrival of out first guests from New Zealand. Rebecca and her workmate Anita drove from the refugee camp on Friday to Agios Konstandinos for the weekend. We motored around the bays to Agios Yeoryios. We had a great day Saturday soaking up the sun, swimming and paddle boarding and topped it off with freshly caught sardines for dinner, beautifully prepared by Hesham.

In memory of the Ipipiri!
It has been the most amazing seven months. I came to Auckland planning to work a dull backpacker job (street fundraising?) for maybe three months to save up just enough money to buy a vehicle and go travelling. I ended up staying for seven months and that was entirely due to this job and this group of people.
For those who are unaware, I worked as a galley hand (we’ll say ‘assistant chef’) on this fabulous overnight cruise boat in the Waitamata harbour. It’s been seven months of slaving over hot stoves, do no work parties, sneaking off on break to go to the beach and scrambling back up to the kitchen just in time for dinner with wet hair and shoes half on.
It’s been fantastic. My crew: Char, Alexis, Jono, Alex, Lucky, Richard, Chloe (and our boss Rachael on the end). You guys were amazing, I will miss you (and hopefully see you again somewhere in the future.) Extra shoutouts to the Other Rachael, Chelsea, Nathan and Jake who are not in this crew picture but are still crew forever :)

April
Well, April was a month!! It disappeared so quickly. And now its may, and I’m on another ridiculously turbulent flight down to Dunedin this time - first time ever going there! So I shall write a life update to distract myself in the interim.
I also ate best ugly bagels at the airport and got jam on my screen so it’s all sticky. Bad planning yo.
Oh April! We started off with three days up in auckland for work. Damn was I hanging out for those three days, in the peace and quiet of a hotel room, away from everyone and normal life and the office and dare I even say it, Dave. And it was lovely. The humidity was most definitely not! But it was great getting to be up there and hanging out with people and getting to know their jobs a bit better as well. I got a lot of stuff done and it was so good to just be able to walk out of the office and go home and not have to be anything to anyone and just journal and watch what I wanted to on Netflix and so much other good shit.
The downside was I got sick - boo. Got back to Wellington and a cranky boyfriend and oh my god this plane wants to kill us all. Jeepers.
I went to a first aid course the next day deaf in one ear, and by the time I got to work on Friday could hardly hear in either ear! Anyway, ear infections usually clear up quickly for me which is good because then it was HOLIDAY TIME!! and by holiday I mean road trip up north to Taupo and Rotorua and Auckland. Primarily for Auckland zoo and Kelly tarltons because let’s be real all Dave and I care about are cute fluffy animals. Except, then, on top of everything else arrives a chest and sinus infection. #allclass #gobigorgohome
Which actually turned out to not be such a disaster because it meant we actually slowed the f down, and didn’t try and cram a million things in and we didn’t feel bad about staying in bed til 9am every day and going to bed early. So we spent a lot of time in hot pools and just wandering slowly and I went on swings in every single city we went to. Man, swings are just so much fun! I seriously want a decent set in our back yard.
Taupo was lovely and we had such nice weather. I really like it as a laid-back country kinda vibe. Its a great place to mosey round and read some books and just relax. Quest was awesome too. Both of us were just so excited to have a big bathroom again!! Honestly, its so the little things in life that make you happy. We also had a washing machine and dryer as well which was fabulous!
We drove up to Auckland on the Monday and oh my god, so many roadworks. We hadn’t even made it to Auckland and both of us were just like, f living here ever (no offence aucklanders, but your traffic is shit and your city is so badly laid out). Auckland zoo was cool but OH MY GOD so many freaking rat???? Like, literally ever single enclosure had multiple rats in it!! It turned into spot the rat not the animals actually there. And proper big, 20 cm long body rats, not little field mice or anything. Groooosssss.
And then to make it the perfect storm of health things, I got my period on the drive up, LOL. poor Dave, he never gets laid on holiday. I don’t know we always manage it but we do. Crack up.
The hotel was good, the fact it had two bedrooms was awesome and we had a washing machine in our room as well?? Nailed the washing on this trip, honestly. I basically wore the same three things the whole time. #lazyas
We decided Waiheke was too far (lol, that’s how lazy we were) so we did Devonport instead which was lovely. And had a great playground with fab swings (a+ recommend if looking for swings in Auckland)
Omg this plane is rocking like a boat it’s the weirdest sensation.
We also went to Kelly tarltons where we bought Bruce, a massive soft toy shark!! He’s so amazing, he’s my new cuddle buddy at night, he’s almost as long as I am. Poor Steve has been demoted (Steve being the dugong Dave and I bought on our first ever trip overseas to Sydney). It was hilarious because we went on the morning that tropical cyclone cook was meant to hit Auckland and they were banging on about how terrible it was going to be for Auckland so everyone mass evacuated (sensible, because if our office up there is anything to go by, no one had emergency kits or would know how to get home if anything actually went wrong). So everyone is stocking up on groceries and water and food, and then there’s me and Dave wandering up Queen Street after going to a pharmacy for more drugs (Dave was sick too by now) and me with a giant soft toy shark. We got some odd looks man. It was great! We went back to the hotel and celebrated by watching finding Nemo waiting for the worst of the weather to pass. After that we went to town and played minigolf and got burgers for dinner. All in all it was a very us five year anniversary. Speaking of which, we had our five year anniversary WHAAAAAAAAATTTT where did those five years even go?!?! God I love that boy.
The next day we joined the rest of Auckland evacuating for easter weekend and it took 6 hours to get to Rotorua (usually 2.5). So stupid. Dave was definitely sick because at that point for the first time ever he actually slept in the car. Crazy. It was a really fun drive though Google maps took us on all these mental back roads that were flooded and had trees down and fun crazy stuff so I had a good time. We spent a night in rotovegas with my mental family which was lovely and my uncle finally gave me a prescription for antibiotics (cheers to having a doctor in the family). We went back to Taupo for another night and cruised on home.
It was all rather lovely, despite being so sick.
And then it’s been back to work and the busyness and the rest of life.
One of the best things about April was doing my best to deal with the small things for my mental health, which has been pretty shaky over the last 8 weeks. I knew that after my birthday I needed extra help because #life and not coping, and I found a fucking AMAZING naturopath who I just love so much. She’s been so helpful and supportive. I went to her originally for my anxiety and crazy overthinking and she does homeopathic stuff and whatever she gave me fixed it within a week. Well, fixed it as in it took away the total panic from the overthinking, not that the anxiety has gone away but the whole ‘sky is falling down feeling’s disappeared enough to allow some rational thought back in. I went back on Anzac Day (bless her, she came in for an appointment just for me because we couldn’t make a workday work) and was like, so you said responsibility like, 40 times the other week, let’s look at that, and now we’re working through my hating the system feeling, and dealing with all the suppression that came with working at shit old job and various other life situations.
One of the biggest things I’m struggling with right now is hating the system that society has designed. like, who the fuck ever thought it was a good idea to work 40 hours a week and create a world where people can’t achieve self fulfillment and why don’t we let people work to their natural strengths and why do you have to own a house to be an adult and all this other fucking nonsense. And how do you live a life of your terms but also somehow within the system and cultural norms as well because I don’t want to be an outsider but there’s so many things I don’t agree with and how are so many people ok with sneidng kids to school hungry each day and just, whyyyyyyyyyyy do we all exist and why have we created this inequity and inequality in life?! Like, I don’t get it and I don’t know how to live in it and I don’t know how you’re meant to bring kids up ok this and so many other things ya know.
So just like, not tackling the big issues or anything at all.
Actually, I was watching Moana on Saturday night and just bawling my eyes out because its so reflective of life - the world is telling you to be this and this and this and this and somehow you have to find the courage to be like, nah, fuck off mate, I’m Gunna go sail my ship far away from y'all and see what needs doing somewhere else.
So Sophie, god bless her soul, I absolutely love her, and she tells me I’m not crazy, and I’m not losing my shit, and that while there’s not necessarily an answer we can still deal with it and cope with feelings and also she’s been there and done that and that it will get better.
And I’m so, so grateful I’ve found her. I’m also grateful for all the ladies in my life who have put up with these brutally honest conversations in my life, and let me cry over lunch, and who are working through all their own things and still manage to hold space for me, and who create space for laughter and silliness as well. I’m so grateful for Dave who is willing to just ride the wave with me and go with it. That boy puts up with so much from me and just takes it and goes with it and doesn’t complain. Work has likewise been amazing. I told my boss I was losing my shit internally and I was going to be disappearing for a few hours each week to sort myself out and he was so upset with himself because he’d asked how everyone else was doing but he hadn’t asked me how I was. Even more so he was like, what can we do for you, do you need work from home days, do you need time in other offices, do you not want to travel, just let me know what you need and I will make it happen. Which was fucking lovely.
I also took a month of fitbit and stressing about my weight and I bought new clothes that make me feel good and it’s so much nicer than loathing yourself every single day and cramming yourself into something too small and pretending like it’s ok.
PRAISE BE JESUS WE HAVE FINALLY LANDED.
I apologise for all the typos, I’ll try and fix them at some point. That was a seriously bumpy flight. Amen for antianxiety pills that make it all ok.
Now I just have to turn around and do it all again in 10 hours time.

What are the benefits of CBD?
Like any capital city, Auckland is packed full of places to see and things to do and the best way to see it (if you have the time) is to wander around exploring every nook and cranny and visiting every attraction, restaurant or site possible. But... if you have limited time you need to be much more organised and having a clear itinerary is definitely the way to go. There are a great range of hotels in Auckland offering excellent Auckland CBD accommodation close to most attractions, restaurants and sights so you don't waste too much time getting around. Getting around Auckland isn't difficult, there are plenty of taxis, buses and trains in the CBD plus the Auckland 'Hop on, Hop off' Explorer charges a reasonable fee and allows tourists to hop on and off the bus all day, and stops at most of the major Auckland attractions.
Day 1

Click Here  Next stop is the Auckland Zoo, home to New Zealand's largest collection of animals and known as one of the most progressive zoos in the world. The zoo is set on 17 hectares of lush parkland and houses 138 different species. Finish day one with a walk around cosmopolitan Viaduct Harbour and a quick visit to the Voyager Maritime Museum followed by a relaxed dinner at one of the Viaduct's waterfront restaurant. Retire to your Auckland CBD accommodation exhausted.
Day 2
Start day two with an adrenalin-filled jet boat ride around Auckland's beautiful Waitemata Harbour followed by a quick ferry ride from Auckland to Devonport for a much more relaxing brunch. Take some time to explore the charming seaside town, its beaches, shops and galleries. From Devonport head back to Auckland CBD and visit the Auckland Museum with the world's largest Maori and Pacific Island collection housed in New Zealand's most iconic and impressive heritage building. From here it's a short trip to the famous Sky Tower, Auckland's tallest building where you can enjoy 360° views of Auckland from a 1.2 metre wide observation deck called Sky Walk, 192 metres above the city streets. Adrenalin junkies may want to take the experience one step further and have a go at Sky Jump - described as base jumping while attached to a wire. Once back on terra firma a great way to conclude your two day trip to Auckland is with a sunset dinner cruise on Auckland harbour. There are several companies offering dinner cruises leaving out of Viaduct Harbour and if you're lucky you may get to see some dolphins while you're out there. A quick trip back to one of the excellent Auckland airport hotels means you'll be ready to fly out first thing in the morning knowing that you've seen the best of Auckland.

Christmas At Sea
It's about time I finally write about my CHRISTMAS vacation even though it's basically May. It was the first time that I was away from my parents over that particular holiday and I did feel a little guilty. But I needed to get out of Indiana and away from the worst winter in my history of living. The cruise went from the 22nd of December to the 3rd of January.
Food was provided 24/7 on the cruise ship so there wasn't really a need to eat off the ship (even though that's one of my favorite parts of traveling). But don't get me wrong---the crusie ship's food was soooo good and surprisingly I even got tired of it.
I'm gonna do the lame thing where you write information on all the places you go, but that's mainly so I never have to google facts about the towns again even if it's boring and reads like a textbook.
Sunday, December 22 was just a night on the boat in Sydney. I hadn't been on a cruise ship since probably the 8th grade or somewhere around there so it was pretty exciting. The ship was HUGEEE and our room was PERFECT! Balcony and everything! Andrew bought us the unlimited beverage package, but for future reference we won't do that again.
On Monday, December 23rd was DEPARTURE DAY! After dinner, Andrew and I went to see Jon Darsk play the piano at the Solstice Theatre. He was phenomenal--mashing up Beethoven to Bill Joel, I was totally diggin' it.
"Sydney's breath-taking wonders and striking atmosphere will get you on your feet. Between the plentiful activities for all sorts of styles and the abunday entertainment on shore, you'll be sure to enjoy Sydney like no other place you've seen before.
Australian Aborigines are alleged to have existed in Sydney, known then as Warrane, for at least 50,000 years back. When European settlers set foot on the continent, Captain james Cook, took over the East Coast naming it New South Wales. Cook, aboard the Endeavour, extended his voyage to the South to further expand British territory. The continetn served as a penal colony, meaning that the first fleet to enter Sydney was comprised of the British Colony of New South Wales' first immigrants, largely consisting of convicts. Today, Sydney stands as Australia's most populous city and one of the most multicultural cities in the world.
Considered one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the Southern Hemisphere, Sydney offers just about anything, from beaches and wineries to stunning landmarks and world-class shopping." -Celebrity Cruises
On January 2nd, we arrived in Tauranga. I could not WAIT to get here ...not to see anything culturally of the city but to see HOBBITON. Yup, I traveled halfway around the world to see a Lord of the Rings movie set. Andrew was bored as hell, but he can't deny the land and scenery alone (without the Hobbit holes) was wroth the trip off the boat.
"Tauranga is a Maori name meaning the 'resting place for canoes', for this was where some of the first Maori to arrive in New Zealand landed. Captain Cook sailed into the bay of Plenty on the Endeavor in October 1769, giving it its name because of the numbers of thriving settlements of friendly Maori he encountered (and the amount of supplies they gave him). It was a sharp contrast to the welcome he received from the Maori of Poverty bay several weeks earlier, when lives were lost and no food was available. The nearby district of Rotorua was probably first settled during the middle of the 14th century by descendants of the navigators who arrived at Maketu in the central bay of Plenty in the Arawa canoe from Hawaiki. Originally they were of the Ohomairangi tribe, but soon after they reached Maketu they changed their tribal name to Te Arawa to commemorate the vessel that brought them so far in safety. Much of the inland forest was explored by Ihenga in the late 14th century and it was he who discovered and named the lakes of Rotorua and many other geographical features of the area.
In the next few hundred years various sub-tribes spread into the area and as they grew in numbers, they split into more subtribes and began to fight over territory. In 1823 the Arawa lands were invaded by the Ngapuhi chief, Hongi Hika, of Northland The first Pakeha (European) to visit Rotorua was a Dane, Philip Tapsell, who set up a trading station on the coast at maketu and gave the Maori guns in exchange for flax, which he exported to Sydney. In 1831 Thomas Chapman, a missionary, visited Rotorua, returning to settle permanently in 1838, a date signifying the beginning of European occupation. During the 1850s, wars erupted between the Arawa and the Waikato tribes. In 1867 the Waikato tribes attacked in retaliation for the part the Arawa had played in preventing the east coast reinforcements getting through for the Maori King movement. In the course of these wars the Arawa threw in their lot with the government and thus gained the backing of government troops.
With the wars virtually over in the early 1870s European settlement around Rotorua exploded, particularly as the army and government personnel involved in the struggle had broadcast the scenic wonders of the place. People came to partake the water in the hope of cures for all sorts of diseases, and so Rotorua's greatest attraction was the fabulous Pink and White Terraces, formed  by the sinter deposits of silica from volcanic activity. They were destroyed by the eruption of Mt. Tarawera on June 10, 1886. A road was cleared in 1884 to make access easier form Auckland and in 1894 the Auckland-Rotorua railway was completed."- Celebrity Cruises
On Friday, January 3rd we arrived in Auckland to depart. "The Auckland metropolitan area, in the North Island of New Zealand, is the largest urban area of the country. It is also New Zealand's most populous city with approximately 1.3 million residents. Auckland is a city of many wonders; containing a surprisingly cosmopolitan environment. Once you venture inland, even more surprises await, including a total of 48 dormant volcanoes, a lush, leafy urban cityscape filled with beautiful parks, and a number of renowned art galleries.
Initially, a Maori settlement, Auckland flourished after the European settlers bought and colonized the area. Its strategic location, near fertile land and with access to rivers in the north and south, made it an appealing location for all newcomers. For 25 years, Auckland was the capital of New Zealand, until 1865 when it was replaced by Wellington.
Even though Auckland has evolved into the fusion of fashion, culture, wine, and shopping from all around, with only minutes away from the Pacific ocean, you will never feel far from water. Whether it's swimming at the beach or sailing across the harbor, Auckland will definitely revitalize your experience on shore. Visiting volcanoes and sensing the thrilling atmosphere that surrounds the land is definitely worthwhile on your journey to the inner land.
It's one of the sunniest spots in the country, with annual sunshine hours of 2060. It also has a high rainfall, which ensures the lushness of its rainforests, with a mean average rainfall of 1240mm. The mean daily temperature during January & February is 74 degrees Fahrenheit and during July & August the average daily maximum temperature is 57 degrees Fahrenheit" (no one care about Celsius).

Tumblr media
Uncover the unparalleled beauty in the land of the Kiwis.
It’s impossible to imagine or describe just how magnificent New Zealand’s sights truly are – you’d have to be there to take it all in. Choose a guided tour package or hire a private car and traverse the beauty of the North Island. We’ve picked some of the many different highlights you can expect to indulge in when booking a tour with Chan Brothers Travel!

Wellington
Wellington is the capital of New Zealand and was most recently voted as one of the world’s most liveable cities – and it’s not hard to see why! The small city is renowned for its diverse attractions that range from its rich heritage to its unspoiled native beauty. First-timers to this place must make time to head to the top of Mount Victoria – the popular lookout stands 196m above the city – for panoramic views of Wellington. The historic Wellington Cable Car is another top attraction you should place on your list if you don’t want to miss views of the city as well as the suburbs. Learn more about the beautiful country you’re visiting at the Te Papa Tongarewa Museum – the national museum and art gallery which features everything from the colossal squid, to the life and heritage of the Maori (the indigenous people of New Zealand). Wellington is also home to the Zealandia sanctuary, a community-driven ecological restoration project that takes you back to a time before the existence of humans. Situated around a reservoir, the non-profit establishment brings you into a wild and unspoiled area home to rare birds such as the tūī, kākā and kereru, as well as other native species. If you’re a movie buff, you will enjoy paying a visit to the Weta Cave Museum - a showcase of props, costumes and other film-related attractions, including weapons, and life sized models of Lord of the Rings characters. You will also get a tour of the Weta Workshop and learn the science behind many of the immersive blockbuster films. Besides Wellington city itself, you may want to take a day trip to explore at least one of the nearby regions. Wairarapa is one of six, and is an hour’s drive north of Wellington. Best known for its vineyards, a local winery tour with a wine tasting session will definitely be in order. If you get the time, make a stop at pretty little Greytown – one of the oldest towns in the Wairarapa region. Here you will find pretty colonial cottages, amazing food and glorious walking and biking trails. If you’re travelling up from the south, stop to explore the wildlife sanctuary at Mt Bruce. Located in between Masterton and Eketahuna, Pukaha Mt Bruce, is home to some of New Zealand’s most endangered wildlife including a rare white kiwi, the only one in captivity.

Napier / Taupo
Napier is an architectural wonder. Many of the sites you will see as you walk through the city is a result of reconstruction efforts after the massive earthquake that shook the city in the 1930s. Art Deco buildings litter the streets, making you feel as though you have momentarily travelled back in time. A delightfully delicious thing to do in Napier would be to visit The Silky Oak Chocolate Company (like Willy Wonka’s factory come to life). Learn about the chocolate-making process, hop through 3,000 years’ worth of chocolate history at the “Chocolate Thru’ the Ages” Museum, and enjoy a taste of their finest confectionery. A true slice of heaven for all cocoa-lovers. Move further up north and you will find yourself in the town of Taupo, a geological masterpiece. Get on a cruise and enjoy the views of the Lake Taupo – the largest lake in New Zealand. Pay a visit to the powerful and visually stunning Huka Falls, which still holds the title of the most visited natural attraction in New Zealand.Don’t miss out on opportunities to jet boat, bungee jump, or skydive for a once in-a-lifetime experience at Huka Falls.

Rotorua
Rotorua is known as the geothermal wonderland. A must visit is the Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland – an incredibly colourful and surreal attraction. Here, you will be able to see the many different effects of years of geothermal activity on the natural landscape. From bubbling mud pools, huge volcanic craters and the world-famous Champagne Pool and Lady Knox Geyser – there is much to learn and see and be enthralled by. Spend an afternoon at Agroventures Adventure Park – New Zealand’s most exciting adventure theme park for hours of unique and memorable fun. Come evening, learn more about Maori culture with a Te Po indigenous evening experience where you will get to feast on a traditional Hangi feast dinner. After dinner, get on board a motorised waka for an evening of stories overlooking Te Puia’s gorgeous valley. For a more intimate experience, join in the traditional Maori poi dance or haka! Without a doubt, experiencing a culture and hospitality as rich as the Maori’s will be a highlight of your holiday. Make a stop at the scenic Mount Ngongotaha. Take a gondola ride to the summit to admire the otherworldly. For a more luxurious experience, Indulge in an exclusive champagne breakfast as you take in the beautiful views of Rotorua at Skyline Rotorua. If it’s adventure that you crave, ride The Luge - a fun-filled 2-kilometre-long gravity ride, suitable for all ages.

Auckland
One of the better-known cities of New Zealand is Auckland. Despite being an urban jungle, Auckland is only a half-hour drive away from its fair share of natural wonders. Take in some of the best views of Auckland Harbour Bridge, one of the city’s most distinctive landmarks, and Victorian buildings at charming Parnell Village. From beautiful treks to shopping for quirky souvenirs, there is a range of activities to be enjoyed in Auckland. One great way to experience the city is to enjoy a full-day tour from Auckland to Paihia – a gorgeous town filled with coves and beaches just waiting to be explored. Join a Hole in the Rock Dolphin Cruise tour in the sheltered waters of the Bay of Islands and keep an eye out for common and bottlenose dolphins, whales, and other marine life. Cruise past Cape Brett Lighthouse before arriving at the majestic Hole in the Rock centre on Motukokako Island. If conditions permit, your skipper will expertly guide the ship through the narrow space.
