Askblog tag: #nmoroder meursault ask Please see pinned blog post before asking questions!
Ooh boy here we go. i've had several thoughts abt Meur's mother just off the top of my head when i was new to the characters and overall lore, but time passed and my knowledge grew and now those theories suck and im excited to know what its really all about. Nevertheless i feel like its something not so pleasant to think about for him, and since we've got like endless time before his canto comes up, i am free to do whatever i please. sorry man!

28. A Song of Wraiths and Ruin by Roseanne A Brown
★ ★ ★ ★ ★
Let me start off by saying this is another incredibly strong debut. I've read two amazing reviews in one month, there must be something in the water. Brown gives us a fascinating world based on West Africa, with a particularly unique magic system (at least that we've seen in YA Lit), and vastly different but incredible protagonists. Karina is a plus-sized (reinforced multiple times) bratty princess with a penchant for playing the oud. Malik is a nervous, anxiety-riddled refugee arriving in time for a 50-year-festival. One thing I adore is that nothing about their core personality was forced to change, except how they naturally grew and progressed. By the end of it Karina was still a bratty princess and Malik was still an anxiety-ridden refugee. In fact, both things worked to their benefits. The story is both a "tournament" archetype via Malik, and royal court intrigue as Karina tries to find out who in the palace could want the queen dead. They two plots manage to both interact with each other as well as hold their own chapters, which was really fun to read, especially when it all came together at the end. The pacing was wonderful in this story - it was constantly moving forward and told us a lot about the characters and the world they inhabited. By the end of the book, with all its twists and turns, I just wanted to know more. And I'm irritated knowing it's going to be at least a year before I get to see what happens next.
29. We Unleash The Merciless Storm by Tehlor Kay Mejia
★ ★ ★ ☆ ☆
3.5 stars rounded up to a 4! As I reconsidered while writing this review, 3 stars. In this book we go from Dani's point of view to Carmen's. We learn more about La Voz, Carmen's upbringing. The story and plot itself is good. We see some more of Mateo, look at what's going on each side of the walls. I will say, I'm still not 100% sold on Carmen being the sole POV for this book, which is what dragged it's rating down. I often felt like I wasn't getting the full understanding of everything and that I was removed from the exciting action of the world at large. It felt a little too quiet for the final novel of a duology, except for the final battle. If this were a second novel in a trilogy, I think I would feel differently. As far as the writing, prose, pacing, and character development, it was solid. It just didn't feel quite as explosive and compelling as the first book.
30.  Can’t Even: How Millenials Became the Burnout Generation by Anne Helen Peterson
★ ★ ★ ☆ ☆
I was super excited for this book - as an avid follower of AHP's page "Celebrity Gossip: Academic Style" and a longtime member of the corresponding Facebook group, I got to see the bits and pieces she posted while the "sausage was being made" so to speak. The book was both what I expected and not what I expected at all, which is exactly what I should have expected in the first place. I will say that I found the stories and interviews compelling enough, I think in the end it was about a very narrow scope of millenial - mainly white, cishet, middle to upperclass millenials. I think many parts of it are universal and applied to myself, but it was definitely a narrower scope. AHP's writing is clever and interesting for sure, and I finished it relatively quick and was immersed. It was a good book! But I will say it wasn't the greatest, and I think so much more could have been expanded upon.
31. The Silvered Serpents by Roshani Chokshi
★ ★ ★ ★ ★
I am absolutely floored. Thank you NetGalley for this ARC in turn for an honest review! I finished this book approximately 20 hours ago and I can't stop playing scenes over in my mind. I usually think that second books suffer from either bad pacing or character assassinations. But the Silvered Serpents was just as engrossing as the first book. Chokshi's writing keeps improving with each book she writes. It reads and feels like a breathtaking movie heist, with it's loveable cast of characters. In ensemble books (like everyone's favorite YA heist ensemble book that shall not be mentioned) sometiems I feel like the characters are only drawn together because of their circumstance, and we don't get to see enough of the dynamics. That is NOT the case in Silvered Serpents, where every single character has a meaningful interaction with every other one. I truly believe in this found family, and that they platonically love each other, and would die for each other. Platonic love isn't written enough, especially in YA Lit. I will add - the YA label for this one is holding on by a tenuous thread. But we get to see how their relationships with each other affect the decisions that they make and who they are as a person. There will be a little suspension of belief needed for the way they arrive at conclusions but honestly, it all was written so well otherwise I didn't care. The setting is like a fairy tale - our ensemble is whisked away to wintry Siberia, to the Sleeping Palace. Chokshi's descriptions are incredible. It feels like a dream the way she writes, vivid and chilly and enticing. I am obsessed with this book. It is much darker and the stakes are higher. I cannot wait to reread the edited version coming out later this year.

a lil TLC with ya boi TK
@seggstars asked: Can you write something about the reader taking on extra responsibility at work and burning themselves out and TK is there to help them realize that they need a break and to focus on some self care? Thanks love! xoxo
first off I love you and your writing so much ahhh <3 v hype that you’re my first requester!!
ok now on to the good shiiii (doing it headcanon style to warm up, but if you want a lil blurby bit let me know!):
alright alright alright
so you’ve always been a go-getter at work and school
group / collaborative projects? ain’t even worried about it, you know you’ll do well on your portion of the work
but your hardworking nature can def take its toll
whether it’s lack of motivation, anxiety, burnout, or procrastination, everyone reaches the point where they hit a wall
and of course teeks is no different- he gets it
but he’s such a ball of chaos that he doesn’t realize how you’re feeling right away
it’d only be after you don’t respond to his typical goofs and wisecracks like usual that he’d know something was wrong
“babe, you good?” said with a lil crinkle in his brow
his brown eyes looking at you with concern
and you break down and finally release everything that’s been weighing on your shoulders
getting out all the stress, tension, anxiety, and exhaustion caused by work you usually enjoy, or at the very least, handle
travis would immediately scoop you into his arms and hold you as you’re talking to him, letting you cry, rant, sniffle, whatever you need to get out of your system
snuggles you as tightly or loosely as you prefer, knowing that sometimes a good squeeze can really help
he’s def a hair-stroker when he’s comforting someone. just pets u real nicely
and once you felt more calm, he’d help you with getting ready for bed
tagging along with your night routine, whether it’s him helping detangle your hair after a shower, gently washing your face to remove whatever makeup you might have on, or rubbing lotion into your back and shoulders
settles you into bed and brings you a mug of your favorite hot drink and a snack for you two to share
if you’re more of a solution-oriented person, he’d lay in bed with you and help you plan out a less stressful way of getting your work done by scheduling little parts at a time, splitting things into bits and pieces so you don’t overload yourself and reminding you to pace things
or if you’re just needing some r&r and a way to get your mind off things, he’d turn on your guilty pleasure tv show before he goes into the kitchen to pack you a lunch for tomorrow so it’s one less thing for you to think about (I totally headcanon “acts of service” to be one of travis’ main love languages)
either way he’d definitely either A. sneak a note of encouragement into your work bag or B. send you a text during your workday to bring a smile to your face and just check in with how you’re feeling
definitely reminds you to drink water and slips snacks into your bag whenever you leave the apartment
and I think if it was close to a bye-week, he’d plan a little impromptu trip back home where the two of you could enjoy fishing, hammock naps, and home-cooked meals without the worries of work
