The Jiang are kelpie-like stocky large horses with wavy long thick manes; their special trait is being able to hold their breath underwater for hours. The Yu are milu deer with magical antlers that conduct electricity. Jiang Yanli looks mostly like her father and didn't inherit the Yu antlers- Jiang Cheng did. He cried when his velvet shed for the first time btw

Cangse Sanren was the unicorn disciple of the alicorn Baoshan Sanren, and her son Wei Wuxian was born a kelpie/unicorn crossbreed with a very prominent two-pronged horn.

The Lan are pretty standard European unicorn fare, built like Lusitano/Andalusians with goat-like unicorn tails and beards. Their coats are pure white and somewhat iridescent and their eyes change color from blue to amber across the seasons like reindeer.

The Nie are datong horses with Qilin heritage, and Nie Huaisang's mother was a saola, so he's slightly shorter and less muscular than a typical Nie disciple with long antelope horns.

The Jin are Ferghana/Akhal-Teke like unicorns with metallic golden coats and golden horns. Their tails are normal horse tails tho. Jin Guangyao is part Marwari/Dales pony so he has cute curly ears and is shorter than the rest of the Jin. His horn is also somewhat short and stubby.

The Wen are deep chestnut-colored Ferghana pegasi with red highlights in their coats and sunset-colored feathery wings. When the clan was subjugated during the Sunshot campaign all of the Wen prisoners' wings were clipped. A-Yuan's wings hadn't grown in yet so he was safe !!

When Jiang Cheng was captured by the Wen soldiers his antlers were snapped off which left him in a deep depression that tbh was very connected to his fragile masculinity. Wei Wuxian convinced Wen Qing to do an antler replacement surgery by chopping his own unicorn horn off and using the bone to augment Jiang Cheng's antlers. After this the Wen soldiers found Wei Wuxian with his horn snapped off and brought him to the glue factory. In the Burial Mounds Wei Wuxian learned evil horse cultivation and reformed his horn with demonic energy. Also he got really cool demonic energy bat wings and became a pseudo alicorn. Everyone disliked that because they were jealous tbh and also probably because he was killing a bunch of people

The Mo family are donkeys and Mo Xuanyu was a half-Jin mule, meaning that he was mostly built like a mule with a short golden unicorn horn.

I have a question about your namesake, Gringolet the horse! He’s described as having “distinctive ears,” though I can’t find anything more descriptive than that. Were they distinctive in color? Size? Shape?

If it’s shape, could Gringolet have been inspired by the curly-eared Marwari and Marwari-adjacent breeds in South Asia?

ohhhhhhh thats a really neat question! i believe he has red ears and a lighter body, presumably a grey? hes described that way in one of the french romances and im cursing myself for not remembering which one. its either perilous cemetary or knight with the sword. which is interesting bc the cwn annwyn, dogs in welsh mythology, have a white body and red ears, so there must be some connection. i wish i could remember what text that was in.
