several annael headcanons coming right up!
before Rian showed up, his family consisted of himself, his wife Loswen, and their grown-up daughter Sidhiril. Sid got married and moved south when Tuor was still a toddler.
Annael and his entire family basically have the vibes of "every poor but dignified Appalachian family in a movie about the Great Depression"
Annael and his wife had always wanted a little boy of their own, but times were hard and they didn't feel they could have another baby. Adopting a cute little human orphan was actually a dream come true.
There was a long debate between Annael and Loswen over what Tuor should call them when he was old enough to talk. They agreed he should know they weren't his real parents; they wanted him to be proud of his ancestry. Still, just calling them by their first names seemed a little un-familial.
Eventually, they settled on "Uncle Annael" and "Aunt Loswen" which sounded nice and familial but made it clear they weren't his real parents.
(They totally thought of themselves as his parents, though)
Raising an enthusiastic tiny human with no self-preservation instincts in the middle of a poor, dangerous region, especially when the only humans you've met were guys in the army, is...hard.
"Uncle Annael, look, a coyote! Can I pet it?" "Absolutely not, boy, it would eat you in one gulp." "No it won't. Animals like me. Look, that tree is so big! I bet I can climb it all the way to the top." "You'll fall and break your ne..." (alas, at this point in the conversation, 7-year-old Tuor has already scrambled up the tree and will not be coming down until dinner)
wow this got LONG so there is probably going to be a part 2
