The pair was on the roof sitting on the couch. Iza didn’t have his coat but he figured it wouldn’t be so hot out in the middle of the night. Ao had a sweater on, clearly knowing better.
Being outside made it easier to smoke. There was no fear of intervention from a certain canine-hybrid either which made the catnip taste so much better. Iza had given Ao a blunt. He had to insist that it really was okay and to not worry about it. Honestly, Iza didn’t particularly care for hitting a blunt, finding that catnip worked far better on him.
There wasn’t much talking between them. Honestly the one who moved the most was Iza. First he was on his back with his legs over Ao’s lap before finding himself getting cold and moving next to them.
“I told you that wearing a coat would have been a good idea.” Ao spoke in a soft tone, lifting his arm for the feline who had taken the opportunity to slot himself under his arm.
“I didn’t think it’d be this cold though.” Iza pouts, nuzzling his nose into Ao’s side. He took in their scent and could Iza be blamed for finding Ao’s scent to be comforting? No, of course not. How could it possibly be his fault when Ao’s scent was akin to the scent of books, laundry soap and the enticing scent of weed. It was a strange comforting scent but it was one Iza couldn’t hate either. If anything it was a scent he would rather smell over many other scents.
“It’s almost Fall isn’t it?” The brunet asked, looking at the sky. Maybe he couldn’t see the stars but the moon was full.
The feline hums. He wasn’t sure. “Maybe? I’d know ‘cause I’d get my winter coat.”
It was an interesting thought. To see Iza appear more fluffy than he already was? “You mean your ears and tail are going to get fluffy?”
“Yeah, I also let my hair grow out a little and then cut it in spring so.. I won’t be surprised if you don’t recognize me.”
“I would recognize you I bet.” Ao spoke without thought. Iza had a certain look to him, especially his eyes. It wouldn’t be too hard to pick up that it was him within a moment's notice.
Iza gave a soft laugh, purring loud at the thought of how confident Ao seemed to be in his ability. “Alright, I’ll believe it when I see it, unless I get sick then stay away from me.”
Ao was quiet for a moment, “Sick? Why’d you get sick?” The answer should have been obvious but there were different ways people got sick in winter or fall.
“Ah, I don’t do so great when it gets cold. I hate being cold anyway.” He nuzzles into Ao again.
Ao felt how cold it was right now and with Fall on its way he wanted to be sure his friend would be healthy during those times. There were two options here. He could cuddle with Iza right now or he could lend him his sweater right now. With a small hum, Ao thought. Would my sweater even fit him..?
The more he thought about Iza wearing his sweater the hotter he got, but he was sure it was because of his sweater. Not because he was feeling embarrassed at the thought of having that thought. Clearly, it was only a good friend move to lend the sweater. He would get it back eventually anyway.
The brunet leaned forward, getting a whine from Iza.
     “What are you doing?”
Ao didn’t respond as he took off his sweater, feeling the cold but he didn’t mind it. Honestly it felt better to feel the cold air on him than get hotter. “Here, wear this then if you’re cold. I wouldn’t..you know, want to see you get sick and stuff.” He offered the sweater now.
Iza was stunned for half a second before his ears twitched looking at the sweater before gazing up to Ao. “Oh..uhm…but aren’t you going to get cold?”
Ao placed the sweater in his hand, “Don’t worry about it. I don’t really get cold anyway.”
Oh a personal heater? That’s all Iza could hear. “Ah, okay.” He nodded in understanding before he put the sweater on. His purrs got louder, as his ears laid flat softly closing his eyes. “Nyaaa….”
The brunet watched, seeing how Iza seemed to relax further and hearing a soft meow- Ah! He swore his heart couldn’t handle the sound. It was endearingly sweet. “Warm?”
“Super warm, like it came out of the dryer.” Iza confirmed with a small trill.
Ao couldn’t help himself from the soft laugh, leaning back against the couch again, “That’s good then.” He had his arm over the top of the couch letting Iza lean against him. Feeling how loudly he was purring was cute.
He had always had trouble reading and understanding cats but then again Iza wasn’t a typical cat. Truthfully, he was happy he didn’t mess anything up when he met him for the second time. Iza made it easy to understand if he was happy or upset or even angry, then again Ao would always see the way Iza’s face changed when he felt a certain way.
Oh well, thinking about that was an issue for another time. All Ao knew what he liked cats even if he couldn’t exactly understand what they wanted to convey.
“Mrrie~” A small happy sound came out of Iza as he jumped up from the couch.
Ao tensed for a moment. He heard a few of the weird sounds Iza made, mostly trilling and small murps but this sound was different. “You okay?” Ao asked, a little hesitant as he watched Iza. Taking note how much bigger the sweater was on him. It was covering his upper thighs and his whole arms.
“Yeah. I’m just happy is all. I mean look at this-” He turned around. “I’m literally lost in your sweater right now.”
Oh. Ao started laughing then, “Sorry, you’re so small compared.”
Iza’s ears leaned forward, extending a sleeve covered hand to point at Ao, “It’s not me that’s small it’s you that’s big so it’s on you not me.”
What logic was that? “Alright, sure. You’re small because you didn’t get a lot of sleep and didn’t drink milk.”
The feline’s ears leaned back, his face went red. Okay, who was this and how did he know that. He crossed his arms over his chest. Iza pouted, “Well, milk is nasty, plus I’m lactose-intolerant so it’s not my fault I’m small.” Iza didn’t even bother to make an excuse for his lack of sleep; even if he did take long catnaps instead of actually sleeping.
Another excuse? Huh… Ao pat his leg then, testing to see if that would entice Iza to come close to him again and seeing Iza perk up he supposed it worked. “Come here, it’s okay that you’re small.” It’s kind of cute.
With a huff, Iza sat on Ao’s lap, his arms still crossed over his chest as he turned so his side was against Ao’s chest.
Ao gave a small hum, reaching his hand up to start brushing his fingers through Iza’s hair before scratching behind one of his ears. It did get Iza to relax as he settled more until he was sitting between Ao’s legs and resting his head on his chest. “What’s the matter?”
Iza kept purring. He wanted to stay mad, or well grumpy was the better term but with Ao petting him and his scent surrounding him, Iza couldn’t help but relax. “‘M tired.”
“Guess it’s time to go inside then, right?”
The feline gave a small nod.
Ao cradled him and went back inside. He put Iza in his room, “You can give the sweater back later.” Was what he said but what Iza heard was: You can keep the sweater as long as you wanted.
Iza gave a hum, “Okay, I’ll give it back eventually.”
     Meaning never.
That was the last day Ao would ever get to see his sweater. Days turned to weeks and weeks turned to months and he never saw his sweater again, aside from the few times he would see Iza wearing it only for Iza to say that he would give it back soon.
     Which was a lie.
Did he really lose his sweater to his friend? Yeah, but oddly, Ao was okay with that.
