This game was literally everything I love about soccer. **i was in meetings the entire time I was watching and genuinely could not keep my shit together

But the TEAM EFFORT FROM THE THORNS. I know we’ve been making fun of them for being so calmly confident when they hadn’t won yet. But, THEY WERE RIGHT. That was some THORNY soccer.

Start with Britt Eckerstrom, coming is as the third string but apparently Portland has THREE first string goalkeepers. Masterclass. Absolutely incredible. Saved everyone’s ass.

But beyond that, the DEFENSE. That was full team defense. Lindsey was getting everything out of the box with her head while she was in. (Her poor hip, I can’t believe she played as long as she did.) Kelli put on the wheels when she needed to, and the overall just sacrifice of their bodies to block shots was incredible. They were swarming Courage players and not letting them do what they usually do. Big big credit to the midfield, Rocky, Angela, Celeste, SINCLAIR, Horan. And the full back line with Menges and Westphal and Kelli and Kling and Maddie. Hope Kat’s head is okay. (Lynn too!)

God. And then the possession at the end spearheaded by Rocky, Angela and Sinclair. Beautiful.

Morgan Weaver with the GOAL finally. The cross from Rocky was freaking perfect. So so happy for her. She’s going to do amazing things.

And miss Simone Charley did incredible and Tyler Lussi had a nice showing too.

All the Thorns. All the love. God that was so good.

Sorry to Sam Mewis and Crystal Dunn BUT GOODBYE NORTH CAROLINA. Plz have a safe flight HOME.

Thorns v Chicago

Inexperience thorn back line except for Kling in the first half. Different to see the leader holding it down at right back. Especially since she’s playing offense so much too. And then Menges holding it down as the vet in the second half. Credit to Westphal, Smithers, and Pogarch though!

Seeing Maddie Pogarch with some MOVES. Gotta support a fellow Maddie. Super cool she’s getting compared to Kelley.

Smithers SHOT near the end. Needed way more of that.

Westphal had a great game, she had energy throughout and really set up some of the best goal opportunities.

I loved the start of Simone and Morgan. Simone uses her speed in such a smart way. She’s really good at choosing when to turn it on, when to slow up and make cuts. She looks controlled. I have been v impressed with her.

Miss Morgan Weaver. That near goal was beautiful! That VOLLEY. She is really pushing the defensive line, she WANTS the through ball. She just needs to make sure she’s in a better position to not let the defender cut in first. Similar to Simone, she utilizes her speed really well.

Lussi and Everett as subs did alright. Just alright. Lussi does run around A LOT.

Early on, Lindsey was getting swarmed every time she had the ball. Makes sense since she’s p much the most dangerous player. The more opportunities Simone and Morgan got, the more she opened up. It’s crazy seeing her as the team anchor on the field. She does so much, but really needs better outlets to connect with. Not having proper outlets, she holds onto the ball way longer, usually gets fouled, and we really don’t need her getting hurt. She’s missing her usual targets, Sonnett, Tobin, Raso... you can tell. This goal drought is clearly driving her nuts too. And we are not gonna talk about her turf burn

Rocky is p much the only sub I feel comfortable coming in for Lindsey. She wasn’t really able to provide a spark though.

Boureille is a great player. And she’s been relatively consistent. But I wish she’d thread more passes through the back line. There were a couple opportunities with players making the run and she didn’t even look for it, just held the ball. V frustrating.

Emily ogle.. she seemed uninvolved in the first half. Def more touches in the second half. But that missed goal, UGHHHH. It was such a good run and cross from Westphal.

Sinclair ROCKED Bingham, oh my god. I was going to say that she definitely is softer going into some tackles, I think to avoid injury, but NOT EVERY TIME.

Also. Gotta love that Mendi sponsor popping up.

Lot of announcer McCaskill love. I don’t see it. I think Chicago was looking for her to be their experienced vet player with Naeher, Short, Ertz, (all their damn starters) sitting out. I don’t think it was a success.

Disappointing for the Thorns. They need SOMETHING good. I s2g, they have been in a cursed rut ever since the infamous Utah game.
