15 March 2019 - A clicking moment...”Yeah! If he can do it, so can I!”

There’s a lot of videos and blog posts which discuss artist motivation and the need to consistently work at your craft and up-skill, however after starting my new job after leaving the door to door sales industry I fell into a two-month lull where I did little to no drawing.

It was stumbling onto Charlie Lewis’ YouTube channel which gave me a boost in motivation for that art life again, and so his channel will be the first recommendation here.

The first video I watched was

Quitting My Job To Change Career & Become A Self-Taught Graphic Designer by Charlie Lewis

For me, the video resonated because I felt that how he described his situation was similar-ish to my own. Goals of a career in the art industry but with little experience, no portfolio and no idea where to begin. A little more digging into his work, I discovered that he had in fact attended Falmouth University as well, graduating on the year that I started and even studied the same Illustration course!

Realising this, I felt more of a sense of “Yeah! If he can do it, so can I!” and since then I have actively tried to chip away at this goal of an art career.

I would recommend watching all his videos as they are quite short; bite-sized chats with personal anecdotes or advice on working in the graphic design industry. They have a very casual and relaxed feel them instead of being as upbeat and super - polished as other videos where all the pauses and umms have been edited out. This gives the feeling that you’ve run into him at a coffee shop and gotten into an informal chat where you pick his brain on advice for life in the graphic design industry.
