“A Slow Day, But Still Deadly” 80 Years Ago, Today – November 22nd, 1942: In the Caribbean, 322 miles northeast of Barbados, U-163 (Type IXC), attacks a ship from Convoy BRN-3. The Brazilian steamer “SS Apalóide (Photo 1) goes to the bottom. 5 Dead, 51 Survivors. 64 miles southeast of Maputo, Mozambique, the American “SS Alcoa Pathfinder” is sunk by U-181 (IXD2). Six lives are lost in the sinking, including the radio operator who was electrocuted by accident when he stoically remained at his post, attempting to call for help. 55 survivors make landfall a day and a half later, and will then walk over 25 miles with Zulu guides until they reach Maputo. Meanwhile… The German sail boat fishing lugger “Else Kunkel II” (similar vessel, Photo 3) hits a British air-dropped mine off the east coast of Demark, and sinks. Casualties unspecified. 90 miles southeast of Muravera, Sardinia, in the Mediterranean, the Italian cargo ship “SS Luigi Favorita” (Photo 4) is sunk by the deck gun of the British submarine HMS Splendid (P-228, S-Class, Photo 5); casualties unspecified. 200 miles northeast of Murmansk, Russia – and hell and gone from the Arctic Circle – disaster strikes for the Russian Navy destroyer ”Sokrushitelny” (Gnevny-class, sister ship shown in Photo 6). In heavy seas during a storm, her 370-foot long hull begins to warp and flex… and finally breaks in two and sinks. Apparently, there was great panic, and the ship’s officers bailed out first, leaving the crew to their fate. All told, some 52 Russian Sailors lose their lives in the frozen Barents Sea. So horrifying is the incident that the ship’s captain, who survived the sinking, is shot for cowardice. Rounding out the field is the American barge “AGTN No. 34” which sinks off Pensacola, FL, for reasons unspecified. Just another day… 🇺🇲🇺🇲 ** Please Like & Follow "Sandy Hook History" on Facebook & Instagram for more amazing maritime and military histories of the Garden State and New York Harbor as well as a review of the 80th Anniversary of the Battle Of The Atlantic and World War 2** 🇺🇲🇺🇲 (at Fort Hancock, New Jersey) https://www.instagram.com/p/ClSXZ4TN73H/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
