Calm my storms, (comte x mc)
in is a sudden writing post and I had an immense desire to write this. It’s totally a self indulgent post.    HAd sudden need to write angst post WARNINGS: Just a bit of angst. summary: comte calms down mc as her anxiety kicks in.
Btw, this mc is somewhat different from game’s mc. So please don’t take this mc’s character as original mc’s character.
MC POV:
These days , I often found myself getting anxious about the uncertainty of the future.
I got irritated and so shaky. I felt my breaths getting sharper whenever anxiety kicked in. I thought of ignoring it and spending my time as usual, but I couldn’t take it anymore.. my mind was done faking that it was doing alright when it couldn’t take anymore..
So I was ran quickly. Ran through my room doors. Through the mansion corridors and the gardens. I kept on running even though the residents stopped by to ask me where I was going. I just didn’t care. I didn’t care about anything except the urgency to let out all of my pent up emotions that have been consuming me from inside. Let out the thoughts that have been crashing onto me like a violent tempest in the calm seas.
My heart was heavy with all the negative thoughts and fears, just like the clouds  in the sky are heavy with the waters. My mind was racing with myriad of thoughts, that whispered to me like the darkest souls whispering about the darkest sins as I ran through the halls.
I reached my hiding spot, and immediately looked around to see if anyone was there. ‘Thank the gods, no one was there..’ I thought to myself just as a single tear ran down my cheek. And then began the endless stream of tears. I began sobbing loudly, screaming a bit but taking care no one hears my screams.
The time  flied by since then without my knowledge.
As I continued my sobs, I suddenly heard a call from the distance. I strained my ear to listen again, and then, my name was heard. “ MC!! MC!! Where are you?!” My heart suddenly gave a loud and unpleasant thud and I began moving deep into the hiding spot so that no one can find me, while covering my mouth tightly with my hands, as sobs threatened to escape my lips.
“Who would want to see me in this pathetic and most vulnerable state? They’re gonna think I’m annoying.. I don’t wanna burden them with my problems..” I thought as I continued moving.
And then I suddenly I bumped into something. My eyes widened as soon as I looked up. Le comte was standing there, blocking the way to the exit.  I was afraid all of a sudden, for I thought he would laugh at my state. I felt a strong grip on my hand that prevented me from leaving as I began running away. I  tried covering my face with my other hand as I didn’t want him to see my face.
But he caught my other hand faster than I could cover my face and pulled me towards him gently. “ What happened ma Cherie? What are these tears for? Who hurt you?” He asked with worry clear in his golden eyes as he stared at me.
I was still on high alert, having been found. My adrenaline was high and  I was trying hard to release myself from his grip only to find it futile. His grip on me only tightened, but it didn’t hurt. He was gentle as he pulled me yet closer to him and soon I found myself engulfed in his arms.
I tried getting away again only to find the hands snaked around my body tighten a little.
“I don’t know what happened cherie. And I’m sorry if I’m being forceful but, I will keep you locked in my arms until you tell me why you’re crying. It hurts to see your face with tears instead of the smile that adorns your face..”  His voice was dangerously soothing to my heart. That  only made me want to run away.
“Why do you care about me comte?! Who are you to me?! Please stay away!! I don’t want anyone to come after me!” I told him a bit louder, intending to hurt his feelings a little so that he would turn away from me as I began resisting him again.
But how wrong I was. “I’m sorry for intruding cherie. Even if I’m no one to you, you are very dear to me. So it’s natural I feel this concern towards you even if you push me away.” He said, still keeping me engulfed in his arms.
The faint fragrance of his cologne along with his soothing voice was calming my mind a little and threatening to spill my fears and insecurities to this man.
But I was already clutching his coat  tightly as more tears ran down my cheek, but this time, without the fear that someone might hear me. I don’t know when it happened, but I found myself  engulfed in his arms completely and he was rocking me against his chest soothingly.
I think I cried for a long time in his arms, as he continued his efforts to stop my cries. He would whisper soothing and reassuring words in my ear and eventually, I calmed down but my eyes were puffy from crying.
“Are you ready to tell me what happened MC?” I nodded a little and began telling that I’ve been feeling anxious and uncertain since a week or two and also explained him how I tried to cover it, but it just broke today and I was at my limits. I tried to stop from blabbering about this issue, but his warm gaze and golden eyes lured me in like a siren’s song and soon, I told him the complete story.
“ I- I suddenly remembered all of my childhood  promises, dreams and other things before I stepped into this mansion comte. I suddenly felt very nostalgic and a bit sad, knowing that I had broken so many of the dreams I had dreamt as a little girl. Some of them came true. While some of them shattered into pieces. And I began feeling uncertain about what the future might hold for me. I do not say I regret staying behind here in this mansion with you all. But sometimes, the uncertainty scares me very much comte..”
Comte sighed softly before pulling me a bit closer. and I then realized we have been on a bench.
“Ma cherie, I can fully understand your problem. Having lived through centuries, I too felt a bit uncertain about the eternal lifetime I have to live through in my early ages..” Comte took my small hand into his large hands and squeezed them gently. It felt so warm and comforting that I felt my worries began to fade away little by little.
"But.. here’s the thing I  learnt as I continued living... Learn to expect the unexpected and embrace it.. The dreams will always change throughout your life. You might think that you have a vision of entire life perfectly planned out. But when we face a situation we haven’t prepared ourselves, we lose our spirits and become demotivated.. You can sail through the storm of your problems only when you look at it courageously and accept it wholeheartedly.. Each first time is a new adventure.. And you will enjoy the process. And with your loved ones by your side, you can always figure out the way. And our childhood dreams, you say? We are never too late to realise them. When you realise that life itself is the greatest gift you've been given, you will never feel uncertain again. it's just a beautiful adventure and one needs to realise it's beauty.." I felt his hand caress my cheek and run through my hair and I finally relaxed myself. I felt the sudden need to hug him again, but this time out of gratefulness and happiness. I hugged him from the side, and he smiled gently before returning my hug and resting his chin on my head. " I'm so so grateful to the destiny for giving me this life and making me meet you all comte. Especially you. Thank you so much for coming into my life comte ..." I said with a bashful smile and looked into his eyes, only to find them widened a little and soon a bright smile was on his face. "Always ma cherie, you are most important to me. I couldn't be more thankful for your decision to stay here with us.." I asked him to stay with me just a bit longer as I absorbed his kind words and his warmth he was sharing via the hug...And I realised. He's always there to calm down the storms in my heart and he's a warm sunshine that penetrates through those storms and reach me, warming my heart
PS: A reminder again that this was totally self indulgent. I wanted a hug so I imagined this scenario..So please don't be rude if there are any parts you didn't like. thank you. I also used a little reference from miraculous ladybug

Hey, I want to tell you that I really like your blog! And I have a short question: do you write nsfw stuff? If you do, can you write hc for Theo, Vincent and Comte when they first bite the mc?
Thank you anon, I’m glad you like my blog. I do accept NSFW requests (just not sure about how good I can write them since it’s not my forte).  I have not yet read Theo nor Comte’s route, and while I’m currently reading Vincent’s route at the time of writing, I have not yet reached the part where he bites MC. Anyway this is a bit longer than I expected, but I hope you like it ~
[Mildly NSFW] Ikevamp HC request: When they first bit MC (Vincent, Theodorus, & Comte de Saint-Germain)
Vincent
Having never drank blood from a human directly before and being his first time to have truly fallen in love, Vincent couldn’t understand why his thirst won’t be quenched no matter how much rouge he consumes.
As soon as he makes sense of his feelings after consulting with Theo, he tries his best to avoid you out of fear that he might end up hurting you or drink too much of your blood.
The two of you used to spend a lot of time together, so it made you really sad when you realized he started avoiding you. One evening, you caught him staring longingly at you. Vincent seemed to be in a deep trance for he kept his eyes on you even as you approached him and asked him if there’s anything he needed.
He looked rather pale, and somehow one of your hands found its way to his cheek. As soon as you made contact, Vincent snapped out of whatever trance he had been and looked at you, wide eyed.
Heaving a deep sigh, Vincent took your hand off his cheeks, intending to put it away before he could do anything. He never would’ve imagined his thirst could take over that time, and he found himself kissing and licking your wrist.
His fangs grazing on your pulse, he was about to bite you when you called out his name in confusion. Vincent immediately let go of your hand and stood frozen on the spot for a few seconds, before his gaze met yours once again.
“Sorry about that… I… I must’ve been…” at loss for words, he turned around and headed to the direction of his room, apologizing once again as he fled and muttering something about how he had to go.
You can no longer bear the fact that he’s been avoiding you, so you went after him. You already had a hunch as to why based on the hints an irritated Theo had been dropping lately, and the fact that Vincent was about to bite you was all the confirmation you needed.
Vincent sat on his couch, distress evident on his posture. Once he again, he seemed to be too absorbed in whatever has been running on his mind as he failed to notice you enter the room and sit next to him. Being the kind and gentle person he is, you figured that you had to be the one to initiate somehow, because he would never ask for it and the problem would never be solved.
Vincent jolted a little at the suddenness of your embrace, and you took that opportunity to steal a soft kiss from his lips.
“What are you doing here? I’m… it’s not safe for you to be—” his already hoarse voice was cut off with an almost feral sound reverberating from his throat, and in just a split second you found yourself pinned down on the couch.
You could see the violent storm whirling in Vincent’s usually clear eyes as he fought back the urge to take you then and there, and before you even knew it, you were confessing your love for him.
“…That’s why, there’s no need for you to hold back. Take as much as you need. I’m all yours.”
“Can I, really? Am I really allowed to… have this much and be this happy?” The last part was a mere whisper and it was utterly heart-wrenching hearing him ask something like that.
“You deserve the world, Vincent.” With those words you pulled his head down your neck. His tongue flicked on your skin the same skillful way he handled a paintbrush against a canvas. He slowly buried his fangs into your neck, the pain lasting only for the first few centimeters, after which the waves of pleasure coursed through your body with each fraction of his fangs burying deeper into your neck.
The night quickly escalated into a heated, passionate one, and you had to take the next day off your duties not only because Vincent had accidentally marked you everywhere, but mainly you couldn’t even so much walk on your own after last night’s intense lovemaking.
Theo
That night, you thought Theo just went out drinking with Arthur, but when the flirtatious author came home alone and perfectly sober, anxiety began to consume you. You were there when the myrmidons of the Academie threatened Theo to stop with his activities of giving exposure to new artists, or face the consequences.
Your worst fears came to life when you see your lover staggering to the mansion, clutching a badly injured, bleeding arm. You rushed to his side, tears already streaming down your face as you helped him in and called for help from the other residents of the mansion.
“What are you crying for, hondje? I’m a vampire, you know. This is nothing.” Theo did his best to sound like his usual self, but even as a vampire, getting ambushed and stabbed twice on the same arm still hurt like hell.
Sebastian and Vincent helped you tend to Theo’s wounds. Vincent offered to look after his brother, but Theo insisted that he can handle himself and that both you and Vincent should go back to your rooms and get a good night’s sleep. Vincent readily obliged, leaving you and Theo alone in his room.
“What now, knabbeltje? Didn’t you hear what I just said?” To him, it really seemed like you didn’t, for your eyes were still fixated on the bandaged wound, eyes still puffy from crying earlier.
Using his good arm, he pulled you from were you were seated, putting you on top of him. Theo pat your head then pulled you into the tightest embrace he could without straining his wounded arm.
“Silly hondje. Are you that afraid to lose your master?” Theo kissed your head and proceeded to stroke your hair.
“I can’t help it. How else did you expect me to react seeing you leave a trail of blood behind you? And you’re not really immortal like Comte, so if anything happened to you, I—”
You looked like you were on the verge of tears again, so Theo took the liberty of sealing your lips with his own before you could even say things that would make you cry. That was when his blood loss began to take a toll on his body, and he reluctantly broke the kiss as his fangs enlarged.
“Theo… your fangs…” You touched his fangs like a child in awe, drawing a hiss from him. You have longed to be bitten by him for quite some time now, to feel his fangs lodged in your neck as he fucked you silly. Theo gave you all of himself but he always denied you the bite, the sadist taking pleasure in seeing your frustrated and desperate expression.
“Hands off, hondje. My fangs are not a treat.” It was your turn to wear that smug expression your lover often wore as you pressed a finger against his fang, Theo’s eyes widening as you increased the pressure until it pierced your finger.
The scent of your blood had always been alluring to him, but even more so in his injured state. In a flash, you found yourself pinned down against the mattress, a dark smile on your lover’s handsome features as he eyed you like a predator would his prey.
“Well played, hondje. You’re finally getting what you want tonight.” Theo allowed himself just a single lick on your neck before biting down with full intensity, the pleasure increasing proportionally with the strength of his bite that it left you a moaning mess.
Aside from Theo finally losing in his game and you confirming Arthur’s claims that a vampire’s bite is a pleasurable one, the thing that amazed you the most perhaps is how Theo managed to fuck you to soreness even when’s he injured.
Comte
The promised day where Comte bites you and turns you into a vampire has finally come, and while on the surface he maintains his usual elegance and air of nobility, being the one who knows him the most you can’t help but notice the mild apprehension on his eyes as you straddled on his lap.
Brushing aside his golden locks, you pressed a small kiss on his forehead and asked him if he’s having second thoughts about it.
“I was just a little surprised that you would ask for it so soon, ma chérie.” Comte closed his eyes under your touch, his hands moving to pull you closer to him.
He did not miss the way your eyes wavered for a bit, and you immediately knew because of the deep sigh that followed his statement. Mimicking your actions from earlier, he brushed aside your fringes and looked deeply into your eyes.
“You don’t need to force yourself, ma chérie. Like I said–”
“No, no. I can’t stand it anymore!” You knew he was a bit taken aback by your sudden outburst with the way his grip on your hips mildly tensed, and you couldn’t look him in the eye.
You went on and confessed about the hint of sadness you would see in his eyes every time he made love to you, and you just knew it’s his desire have your blood that’s causing him that unmistakable longing.
“I don’t want there to be sadness in your eyes anymore, Comte. And I want this too. So please…” Those were your words as you slowly took off your blouse, before seductively baring your neck to him, inviting, the look in your eyes full of lust.
Comte has lived through hundreds, or even thousands of years— it doesn’t really matter how long since he has long lost count of the years, but that moment would have to be the first time he has felt so much impulse and desire coursing through his entirety, and it scared him to death at the same time that he might drink you dry if he does not find another outlet for that overwhelming desire.
Soon, both of your clothes and undergarments lay discarded on the floor. You’re no longer straddling him; instead you laid sprawled out on the bed, with Comte leaving fiery kisses on every inch of your skin.
His thick, heated length rubbed against your entrance as he kissed and licked that sweet spot on your neck, and in one fluid motion, he sank his fangs into your neck and buried himself deep inside you.
You felt Comte’s desire flowing into you with every gulp of blood and each thrust of his body, perfectly mingling with your own lust. You lost your self to pleasure the night you lost your humanity– and if your new-found eternity is going to be like anything that night, then you really have no need of death to know what heaven is like.
Tumblr media
Eyy is that really an HC I think I might’ve written a full scenario, help
Also in case anyone is wondering, the Academie I mentioned in Theo’s HC is an actual thing in the routes, and basically they’re traditionalists who put down artists exploring a new style, so they’re at odds with Theo who discovers and promotes new talents.
With regards to incoming requests: I’m currently busy with university at the moment (quiz weeks and finals season), so any incoming requests after this might have to wait until the first week of February before I can work on and post them. But if you’re willing to wait, my ask box is always open. I would also appreciate and prioritize Valentine’s-themed requests.

Day 6- Home
Characters: Napoleon, Isaac, Sebastian, Isaac, Jean (with others’ cameo)

Warning     : mentions of suicide
home
Thick black clouds rose high into the night sky as the mansion was burning.
Among the rubble stood Napoleon, holding his rapier limply. His chest heaved laborious breaths, a human weakness his demi-vampire status couldn't remove.
He tried making sense of his surroundings. It was a futile act, with fire and smoke obscuring his vision. Vapor invaded his lungs as Napoleon forced himself to walk.
Why did everything turn out this way?
Napoleon didn't even question "how" as the former emperor himself had been unaware that a fire had broken out. Even the quick and capable Sebastian was reduced to a panicked mess as the inferno began to spread over various parts of the mansion.
"Monsieur Napoleon," the butler stammered apologetically, tears forming in the corner of his eyes. "I'm sorry. I tried, but there —there's nothing else I could do."
Meanwhile, Leonardo and the Count were rushing in all directions to find the other residents one-by-one and drag them out. Napoleon saw Theo carrying his brother out, shouting something along the lines of "Broer, forget about the paintings. We can't save them!"
Napoleon had barged through the fire with Arthur to look for Dazai, whom they found gazing at the embers around him with dissonant tranquility.
(Both men argued for a good long while until Napoleon forced the sullen novelist on Arthur and commanded him to make a run for it).
But now, Napoleon found himself trapped in the fire.
It was ridiculous, knowing that some of the men —himself included —had a sliver of death wish despite all the benefits their second life offered. Yet in the face of a deadly situation such as this, their first instinct was to flee. Napoleon thought back to Vincent and how the painter must have suffered, knowing he failed to protect the very things he'd been living for.
And then, there's that one person who'd been claiming he had no desire to live at all.
Where is he now?
Napoleon banished the mental image of the man's possible reaction to finding himself encircled by the blaze.
In desperation, he scrambled to every direction, getting more and more lost by the critical seconds. He had crossed the (now crumbling) stairs and reached the ground floor, that he was positive. But the growing panic debilitated his chances of finding any possible exit.
His emerald eyes fell on one of the paintings on the wall. Comte told him that his old friend produced it ages ago, during one of his brighter moods.
That's right, this mansion had long seen Leonardo's worst and best days. It had been home to all of them, bearing witness to times when they were at their most vulnerable as well as their most joyous.
Napoleon wanted to shut his eyes and let his memories away from this moment. Just yesterday, Isaac had been babbling to him about his pet hedgehog's recovery after not eating for two days. Meanwhile, this afternoon, Mozart handed him an invitation to some socialite's banquet, saying that he'd be presenting a new piece inspired by tales of his imperial army.
After this, he will no longer hear the composer play his most celebrated tunes nor watch as new pieces were brought to life. The music room must be ablaze right this very moment; the sterling piano reduced to ashes and the precious sheets consumed by the bonfire.
Napoleon supposed he was lucky that he'd been in the bedroom when the whole commotion started and not in the attic. It'd be more difficult to escape, then. Still, he lamented the loss of those nights when he gazed down at Paris from the window. The warm city lights, a grand sign of civilization and progress, assured him that his arduous efforts for the nation weren't for naught.
Napoleon's thoughts immediately flew to his bedroom upstairs. Regret welled as he realized that the warm bed was no more. There went his sanctuary, his cocoon where he spent lazy afternoons banishing away murky thoughts and lingering dreams of the past. That room was his temporary shelter in this life that felt even more fleeting than his mortal one.
His chest constricted as he thought of the sparring arena and the man he spent his time with dueling and examining each other's weapons. They talked about horses as well —and what of them? What about Ange? In his befuddled state of mind, Napoleon pictured Jean barreling towards the stages, freeing the alarmed horses and setting them free, including his beloved Ange.
It didn't take long for Napoleon's mind to dart towards the kitchen. Did the fire start there? Did anyone see it happen? Nonsense, Sebastian must have been around the dining room and kitchen. After all, it was close to dinnertime when Leonardo alerted them about the fire—
Ah, he just remembered that he'd promised Sebastian to help him prepare dinner this afternoon. But instead, he forgot and went to the thermae instead with Isaac and Jean. The enigmatic Japanese would never confront him about it, but Napoleon still felt guilty nonetheless.
Well, none of that matters now, does it?
So Napoleon let his weapon fall to the ground unceremoniously. Idly, he wondered why his cape still hadn't caught fire by now. The old (yes, he was old and weary alright) Frenchman toyed with the thought of perishing together with this godforsaken building.
His first life had been long and tumultuous. This one was so short and surreal, it felt like a dream.
It is sweet and proper to die for one's country. To die like this, confused and grieving, was a farce. Then again, this was a hundred times better than succumbing to his end on that faraway island, lonely and in pain.
The former— nay, an emperor he shall forever remain —The emperor stared ahead past the screen of fumes. He took in the scenery before him one last time and sighed deeply.
Napoleon closed his eyes.
It was a great run, but even the best of times all come to an end.
Tumblr media
Isaac struggled to break free from Sebastian's iron hold as he watched the mansion collapse.
"Let me go, you bastard! Napoleon's still in there!" Isaac thrashed about. "What are you all standing around for? If you don't go after him, I will—"
But Sebastian only embraced him tighter, his eyes red and his face stripped of its usual composure. "There is no use, sir. We can't risk going in there and getting ourselves trapped. Besides, this is Monsieur Napoleon. Of course, he'll return—"
"He doted on you like a son, you idiot!" Isaac screamed at the butler. "Are you REALLY that much of a coward to save the man you said you admired? Piss off—"
"I'll go." A deep voice rang amidst the chaos.
Isaac and Sebastian directed their attention towards the man walking in the direction of the mansion, his cape billowing in the wind.
"Jean!" Isaac called out to the soldier. "Can you go and save him?"
Sebastian winced at the thought of Jean d'Arc, braving through the fire to save another man. He can't even light a matchstick on his own, how is this even possible?
But Jean wordlessly unclipped his cape and let it fall to the ground. He adjusted the sword belt on his hip as Sebastian and Isaac watched.
Done with his preparations, he turned towards the men.
"I'm going inside." He declared. "No need to worry about us, for we are soldiers."
"We know! But—" the butler cried. He wasn't about to lose another great man to this catastrophe. "Are you certain about this?!"
Jean stared back at him through unreadable, iolite-colored eyes. Sebastian wanted to imagine that he was seeing something other than sorrow.
"I am certain," Jean replied. "Please wait for us here."
With one final nod, he made his way towards the ravaged building, the fire raging more violently than even the pyre.
Jean tightened his grip on the basket hilt of his sword.
There were not many things I could save from back then, he braced himself against the heat. There's probably not much I can save now.
But if it's for a friend, then maybe...
Jean broke into a run.
Then maybe I can reach out for it, just this once.

Chapter 13: Guilty Of Caring
The next morning, Sebastian wakes me up with three loud knocks on the door. Annoyed to be suddenly pulled from my slumber, I look out the window. It’s ridiculously early. Thankfully, he brings a tray with coffee and a sandwich when I tell him to come in.
“Rise and shine, Anaïs,” he says cheerfully. Ugh, I hate morning people. I shoot him a groggy glare and rub the sleep from my eyes. “Get dressed and meet me in the garden, by the fountain. I have a job for you.” Upon saying that, he leaves again, and I sit at my desk to eat breakfast.
I knew my offer to help would bite me in the ass. Still, I set myself up for this, so I can’t really complain, and truth be told, I am grateful for something to do other than sit around in the library, which I now know is practically Leonardo’s second bedroom.
After our conversation yesterday, he helped me find the book I was looking for. He seems to know those shelves by heart. I stayed there as I researched and took notes for my paper, while he scribbled on a notebook himself until we were called to have dinner. I went to bed early after that.
I walk up to the fountain, where Sebastian is already waiting for me. He hands me a neatly folded apron, which I put on without question. Above us, Mozart’s playing floats out through the open window of the music room.
“I need you to plant some violets for me. But first, let me show you where everything is.”
I follow him as he guides me around the garden, explaining which plants are kept in each area. As everything Sebastian does, it’s perfectly organized, and much larger than I thought it would be. Under the pale morning sun, we make our way to a greenhouse near the edge of the property. In it, all sorts of tropical plants cover every surface, safe for a small work table in the center. Once he’s showed me where all the tools and supplies are, I turn to him.
“Great, so where do you want me to plant them?” I ask, already eager to get down to business. Even after I started working as a chemist and was no longer employed at the flower shop, I always loved gardening, and kept doing it as much as I could in my small London flat.
“That’s the spirit,” Sebastian chuckles. “Right where we started the tour, by the fountain. Mozart likes looking at them when he’s composing. Now, unless you have any questions, I shall return to my work inside.”
“All clear,” I nod. “See you later.”
Sebastian leaves me, taking a different path back to the mansion, and I gather some supplies and the tray of seedlings he pointed out before in a large basket before making my way to the fountain.
I have my sleeves rolled up and my hands in the dirt when a shadow covers the flower I am in the middle of planting.
“Good morning, Aiko-san,” says Dazai behind me. He bends to look over my shoulder. “Hard at work, I see.”
“Anaïs,” I correct him, but turn to him with a smile. I don’t mind the company. “I offered to help Sebastian, since I’ll be living here for a while. I guess that makes me the new gardener.”
“Mind if I stay here with you? I like to write outside,” he informs me as he gets back up and takes a seat on the edge of the fountain.
“By all means.” I return to my labor in silence, but then I remember something. “Hey, Dazai? What do you write about?” I look up at him and wipe my hands on the apron. “I just realized I don’t really know anything about you, compared to the other residents. Cultural differences, and all.”
“Well...” Dazai starts, and takes a thoughtful glance at a nearby tree. “Before I became a vampire, I used to write about my own life, mostly. Sometimes I just wrote about life in general. I still do, but this is just a poem I can’t seem to finish.”
He is interrupted by Isaac, who wanders out of the mansion looking at the floor and calling the name ‘Harry’. As soon as he sees me, he scurries away. I didn’t even know he was avoiding me.
“What is he doing?” I ask, earning a laugh from Dazai.
“Looking for some apples, probably,” he jokes. I stare at him, unsatisfied with his answer. “He’s trying to find his pet hedgehog. The little thing must have ran off somewhere, though I don’t blame him. Isaac-chan is always so grumpy.”
Was that apple thing about how Isaac discovered gravity? I just roll my eyes with a chuckle and continue planting the violets. Meanwhile, Dazai focuses on his notebook, occasionally looking around, I assume for inspiration. By the time I am done with all the flowers, it’s almost lunchtime. As if he read my mind, Dazai approaches me.
“Wanna take a break? I’m hungry.”
“Yeah, me too.” He extends his hand to help me get up and I take it. I decide to leave all the tools there and come back later to clean up.
We get to the dining room and take a seat at the table. To my surprise, Sebastian has already served some food and a bottle of rouge for Dazai. There is also a third set of plates, along with another bottle. I wonder who it’s for.
My unspoken question is answered when Isaac enters the dining room, only to see me and swiftly turn around to leave the way he came from.
“Isaac, wait!” I call after him, but he gets away too fast. With a resigned sigh, I grab my fork and start eating. Dazai observes me with amusement, but does not voice whatever he’s thinking.
As soon as I finish, I quickly excuse myself to return to the garden. I need to put away the tools before I forget. I carry the full basket to the greenhouse and begin organizing the supplies. As I return a bag of fertilizer to a low cabinet, I see something move out of the corner of my eye.
I search around the corners, but there is nothing out of the ordinary. A sound coming from under a shelf alerts me to the location of whatever animal it was that I saw. I hope it’s not a rat. I lower myself to the ground and look under the shelf, and what I find surprises me.
“Hey there, little guy.” Pressed against the corner, a small hedgehog trembles and struggles to move. “Are you stuck?”
I reach for a pair of thick gloves on the work table, and after putting them on, I return to aid the trapped animal. I reach under the shelf and feel around for him, unable to see what I’m doing. It only takes a few seconds for me to grab him gently and, scared, he moves around in my hand. I successfully pull him from the tight corner and get back on my feet, holding the little beast in my cupped hands. He puffs out his spines. Thankfully, the gloves do their job and protect me from being stung by them.
This must be Harry. I think I should take him to Isaac, seeing as he has been searching everywhere, but the physicist wants nothing to do with me, apparently. Oh well, there’s nothing to lose if I try to speak with him, other than a small portion of my ego.
I knock on Isaac’s door with a gloved hand, and wait for him to open. He takes his time, but when he finally does, his eyes immediately light up.
“Harry! Where have you been, little friend?” he softly exclaims. I hand the hedgehog over to Isaac.
“I found him hiding in the greenhouse. He’s a scaredy one, but I think he likes me now. Don’t you, Harry?” I take off the gloves and stroke him with my finger, earning a happy little chirp. The poor thing was terrified, but I fed him some worms in order to keep him calm.
Suddenly, Isaac seems to notice who he’s talking to. He looks away and quickly thanks me as he tries to close the door, but I wedge my boot in the way before he can shut me out completely.
“Isaac, please. I just want to talk.”
He sighs, fully aware that I am not going anywhere, and steps away from the door to let me in.
“You’re avoiding me,” I state, softly. I walk into the room and close the door behind me. “I just wanted to let you know that you don’t have to.”
“I-I could have killed you...” He sits on the bed and puts Harry down next to him. Meanwhile, his eyes look at anything that isn’t me.
“I know. But you didn’t.” I sit down next to him, and he moves away. That’s okay, these things take time. “I’m sorry. You must have been so hungry... It was my fault that your meal was late. Le Comte explained everything. I can’t imagine what it’s like, but I don’t want you to blame yourself for what happened, Isaac.”
He turns halfway to face me, but his eyes are still on the floor.
“You’re not scared of me?”
I shake my head, a sad smile on my lips. He really made a point to avoid me just so I wouldn’t feel scared.
“How could I be when you’re this sweet?”
He blushes at my words, but doesn’t say anything. The silence is not uncomfortable at all, it just... is. I take this moment to look around the room. All sorts of tools and mechanical trinkets line the shelves on the wall, and a dismantled clock sits on his desk. My face lights up when I spot something in the corner.
“Is that a sewing machine?”
He nods, and I almost decide to leave it at that when he starts talking.
“I found it in the attic and repaired it, but I have no use for it.” That is the most words I’ve ever heard him say.
“Could I... Could I borrow it?” I ask shyly. He shrugs.
“You can keep it. It just takes up space and gathers dust here.” Once again I am surprised by him talking, although his voice is so quiet I would not be able to hear it if I wasn’t sitting right next to him. We’re making progress.
“Thank you, Isaac,” I smile at him, even though he’s not looking at me, and get up to look at the machine, which makes me realize something. “Wait... This is not like the machines I’m used to. I don’t know how to use it.”
“I guess... I could teach you...” Now that was unexpected, in the best way possible. I turn around to face him, my smile returning even bigger.
“You’d really do that?”
“It’s the least I can do,” he simply says. Before I have time to thank him, he gets up and approaches me before pulling the sewing machine to the middle of the room.
“See this latch on the table? You need to open it to pull the bottom thread through the hole and attach it to this bit here next to the wheel,” he explains. He sounds a lot more enthusiastic now. “To make it spin you step on the pedal repeatedly. Then, for the top thread, you have loop it around this bobbin and feed it through the needle, then the pedal and the wheel under the table will do the rest of the work. If it gets jammed, try spinning this wheel up here by hand in the opposite direction and then pull on the thread.”
“Thank you! Thank you so much!” Without thinking, I throw my arms around Isaac and pull him into a hug. He tenses for a moment and then goes limp. I finally let go when he awkwardly clears his throat, and the moment he is free from my embrace he looks away, a pink tint on his cheeks.
“Sorry,” I mutter, embarrassed. I got too excited. “I’ll stop bothering you now.”
He just nods and watches silently as I drag the large contraption out of the room. I stop in my tracks and turn to face him before he closes the door.
“Isaac? It was nice talking to you,” I tell him. “I hope we can be friends someday.”
