Heute poste ich einige Bilder, die ich nicht selbst geschossen, sondern nur etwas nachbearbeitet habe. Diese Bilder hat ein netter Arbeitskollege, der um meine Leidenschaft für Dampflokomotiven weiß, in seinem Urlaub auf Costa Rica geschossen. Er ist extra einen Umweg gefahren um mir Bilder und ein Video anfertigen zu können. Großartig.

Nun etwas mehr zu dieser schönen Lokomotive. Sie wurde 1922 von Bladwin in den USA gebaut und wurde hauptsächlich für den Bananentransport zwischen den Plantagen und den Häfen an der Küste von Costa Rica eingesetzt. Die Baldwin Locomotive Works war ein wichtiger Hersteller von Dampflokomotiven in den USA und exportierte auch viele Lokomotiven in andere Länder, darunter auch nach Costa Rica. Die Lokomotive wurde 1935 nach Palmar Sur gebracht um dort Bananen, Personen und andere Güter zu transportieren. Um 1976 wurde ihre Arbeit zunehmend von Diesel-Lokomotiven erledigt. 1981 wurde sie dann in den Park von Palmar Sur gebracht. Hier steht sie heute als Denkmal. Die Locomotora 84 ist ein wichtiges kulturelles Erbe des Landes und erinnert an die Bedeutung der Eisenbahn für die wirtschaftliche Entwicklung Costa Ricas.

Today I am posting some pictures that I did not take myself, but only edited. These pictures were taken by a kind colleague who knows about my passion for steam locomotives, during his vacation in Costa Rica. He went out of his way to take pictures and a video for me. That’s really great.

Now, a little more about this beautiful locomotive. It was built by Baldwin in the USA in 1922 and was mainly used for transporting bananas between the plantations and the ports on the coast of Costa Rica. Baldwin Locomotive Works was an important manufacturer of steam locomotives in the USA and exported many locomotives to other countries, including Costa Rica. The locomotive was brought to Palmar Sur in 1935 to transport bananas, people, and other goods. By 1976, its work was increasingly done by diesel locomotives. In 1981, it was brought to the park in Palmar Sur, where it stands today as a monument. The Locomotora 84 is an important cultural heritage of the country and serves as a reminder of the importance of the railway for the economic development of Costa Rica.

Das traurige Ende einer Baureihe 44 auf dem Schrottplatz

In den 1970er Jahren wurden aufgrund des Booms moderner Diesel- und Elektrolokomtiven zahllose Dampflokomotiven verschrottet. Da der Rohstoff Eisen sehr begehrt war, wurden viele Lokomotiven zerlegt und verwertet.

In the 1970s, due to the boom in modern diesel and electric locomotives, countless steam locomotives were scrapped. As the raw material iron was in great demand, many locomotives were dismantled and recycled.

Shay Lokomotive (Class PC-13) von Lima Locomotive Works (Fabrik-Nr. 33209) aus dem Jahre 1928.

Shay Lokomotiven gehören zu den Getriebelokomotiven, die für den Einsatz auf engen, steilen und schlecht ausgebauten Waldstrecken entwickelt wurden.

Über Schubkurbelgetriebe, Gelenkwellen und Kegelräder können alle Räder der Lokomotive angetrieben werden. Der Kessel sitzt bei diesen Dampflokomotiven meist etwas versetzt , da das Triebwerk seitlich angebracht die Gelenkwellen direkt antreibt. Die Shay gehört zu den beliebtesten Getriebelokomotive und wurde sehr viel zum Transport von Holz verwendet.

Shay locomotives are among the geared locomotives designed for use on narrow, steep, and poorly constructed woodland lines.

All of the locomotive's wheels can be driven via push-crank gears, cardan shafts, and bevel gears. The boiler is usually somewhat offset in these steam locomotives, as the power unit is mounted on the side and drives the cardan shafts directly. The Shay is one of the most popular geared locomotives and was very much used for transporting timber.
