Dev Log: Localizing Your Dry Delight Miniseries--Variable character name (1/?)

Hello and good day folks! Now that we’ve announced the localization of YDD, we can talk a little bit about localization technicalities. These posts will be on the briefer side and may feature some Ren’Py-specific tips. You can also be on the lookout for some discussion about the difficulties with translating certain language (such as idioms--the YDD glossary has had quite a bit of discussion between all the different translators).

The Chinese YDD localization efforts are a little further along than the French (or Red Embrace Russian ones), so there’s more to talk there.

First up is a silly little tip.

Task: Display the character’s name in the correct language.

tl;dr: Define a character’s name with text interpolation Character('[richter]’,  what_prefix = '"', what_suffix = '"', ctc="ctc_pic")

We translated the character names into their Chinese equivalents.

Richter -> 里彻 Leslie -> 莱斯利 Eastman -> 迈耶

You use the following snippet to define a Character in Ren’Py so that all their specific attributes (Character name and name color, etc.) are automatically added when they are talking.

default r = Character('Richter’,  what_prefix = '"', what_suffix = '"', ctc="ctc_pic")

The above line defines the Richter character and automatically puts some quotes around his text so that we don’t have to surround all the text in the script with lots of quotes.

Now, switching to another language is simply done by changing a flag:

renpy.game.preferences.language = [English, Chinese, etc.]

Since it is just a variable change, we thought we could define the character with a variable as well:

if renpy.game.preferences.language == ‘Chinese’: ----> richter = “里彻” else: ----> richter = “Richter” default r = Character(richter,  what_prefix = '"', what_suffix = '"', ctc="ctc_pic")

Except this didn’t work. Characters are defined at the very start of the game, and even though we tried to redefine them whenever the flag changed, they refused to be redefined.

Remembering customized MC naming schemes, we almost thought we would need to make a DynamicCharacter, which would have been silly since we only want to change their name (and DynamicCharacter objects probably require more computational resources than normal Characters). Probably.

After some more digging, we remembered text interpolation existed, which is how you usually do a customized MC name in Ren’Py. Ren’Py uses square brackets for text interpolation, so we just needed to insert those brackets when defining the character. Et voila, we now have language-specific named characters!

Character('[richter]’,  what_prefix = '"', what_suffix = '"', ctc="ctc_pic")

The ‘richter’ variable is still defined as earlier under the if statement. It’s just the method of inserting the variable contents that changed.

Life’s equilibrium: Nursing school

First day back to school after a three day weekend. And man, I am burnt. I ditched my community nursing class to go study for another class but this isn’t working out too well as I am blogging. I don’t wanna talk about school. I just wanna talk about my weekend. I spent time with my awesome girlfriend who hates me right now. Why? Because I went to a party on Sunday and I was supposed to pick her up from work and I got too drunk so I didn’t get to pick her up. I feel like there isn’t a book in my life that has the most perfect chapter where somehow I become a hero and save someone’s life (climax) and then I end up being rewarded for being the coolest smartest human being (falling action) and I happily become a story told to generations (conclusion). Really bad example (lol) but I just happened to have a miscommunication with one of my close friends and I practically begged him to be friends with me again. Long story short, I wrote out 28 reasons why we should remain friends, wrapped it with a twix(he loves twix) with a paper wrapper, and numbered them. He kept distancing himself for many reasons so I went to his house, dropped off my gift (with a heartfelt card and a Valentine’s day balloon [very fitting btw]) and left it by the bushes by his front yard. He appreciated it so I think we are okay for now.

Well where am I going with this? I just feel like life is never perfect. Never wants you to be static. Life wants us to be dynamic characters. Life changes us in different ways. I can be happy with my girlfriend and have a complicated relationship with my friends or vice versa. All I know is life is always trying to find some type of equilibrium (something I learned throughout nursing school). Even if you have good intentions, life can still affect your equilibrium, but only to do good in the end. The outcome is always beneficial - being that it can either make you grow or make you fumble but still kick you until you reach the end zone.

Nursing school sucks. It is hard. But this is life’s way of equalizing my decisions and pushing me to the right path. Now back to studying.
